- Point and shoot cameras have been steadily declining over the years to the point where multiple camera companies have said they are no longer making them. And it all comes down to smartphones. But why exactly have smartphone camera replaced our point and shoot cameras? Here's how the smartphone killed the point and shoot.

I use a Sony RX100 Vii for action shots of animals and I have yet to find a smartphone that comes close to the focus on that thing. Smartphones also tend to flatten the image much more than a camera I’ve found. I love my phone for snaps and night time shots but for when I want something a bit nicer I use a point and shoot or bigger camera.
I still use a Sony RX100 Mk III because I absolutely DESPISE the over-processing on the photos coming from those smartphones. It makes the photos look unnatural. I want a bit of contrast. I'm not trading control over convenience.

The simple fact of the matter is that modern smartphones have fulfilled the now century old promise of "You press the button, we do the rest", to quote Kodak's slogan from 1888.

I like that pointandshoots have less processing than my iPhone camera. There's this vague sense of photographic authenticity, that's lost in smart phone cameras.
Yes, i think this video thinks over processed photos are better than life like photos. point and shoot still clicks lot memorable and amazing photos than overprocessed phone photos.
This. If it's the photography a person enjoys and not so much how "good" an image can look technically, more conventional cameras offer that experience. People who observe and appreciate photography more and more tend to appreciate the ways in which an image is technically imperfect and the choices that the photographer had to make.
huge corporations like sony who also produce televisions, don't give a fuck about 'photographic authenticiy'. at 97% marketshare loss, they are going to drop point and shoot and focus on what corporations do best, make money.
Lack of authenticity?
If you don't like these zero-shutter lag HDR shenanigans, just shoot in SDR mode. There are apps for that, as a matter of fact.
I have an iPhone 13 and a Sony RX100 mark IV. The iPhone photos with all the over processing can match the RX100 and even better in some situations, but it feels so boring. Anyone can take a good photo and it’s not even challenging. That’s why I still prefer to shoot with the camera. For me control the aperture and press the shutter button is a lot more enjoyable
I do not have the disposable income to afford both, a good phone and a proper camera (university student), therefore I opted for a Sony Xperia 5 II. The dedicated shutter button and the detailed manual controls make me feel like a big boy, when taking pictures. Sure, the auto mode is ASS and it gets easily beaten by any Galaxy A phone, and also manual photos with editing can barely compete with Flagship auto photos, but with the Xperia I am actually having fun. A great camera substitute for people who want a phone and a camera but can only afford one.
@@leviathan5207 that sounds like a great option. I have heard that Xperia phones are the closest one to a real camera
idk about iphones but on android you have manual settings called pro mode that its the same as a digicam or dslr.
Exactly why i prefer them, no matter how much better phones get, it's just so damn fun to just mess around with the settings and click the photo using a clickable shutter button. I am not much of a photographer myself but i really care about that experience more than anything tbh.

My wife would get a new point and shoot camera each year for work.
She is an art teacher so it is incredibly useful for getting reference images for students to work with. While using a personal phone works they have found transferring images a major pain due to messaging service compression, lack of sd card slot, disabled USB ports on school network and not wanting to encourage pupils to have their phone in school.
While not quite disposable they usually need replaced by the end of the year as something usually breaks, normally the zoom and strangely there is noticeable slowdown when processing images.
I'm honestly surprised that point and shoot haven't received the same love from manufacturers. With the software and image processing hardware available they could design a fairly cheap camera that doesn't have the weaknesses of a budget smartphone camera. I reckon demand has fallen like you said to people have a good enough camera on their phone but a small portion because they haven't put any effort into point and shoot. I speculate doing so would eat into both their smartphone sales as well as lower end DSLR. I would he a person that would be happy with a cheap Poco M series phone but the reason I'm looking at the Oppos at double or 5-6 times the price is that cameras suck on anything under 400

@@definitelynotclickbait8283 It Wasn't always the case and despite what they say, there is still some compression used.
Plus share them with who? you are still stuck with an image on a phone as web versions of those apps are blocked, not allowed their phones in school, USB ports on computers for certain devices and sometimes certain users, teacher will never hand out a phone number to pupils any teacher that does is likely on a register somewhere, phones lack SD card slot for transfer, post processing phones carry out can sometimes make the image useless. Generally the size of the image required for their work large Megapixel values help greatly with digital zoom etc. Nevermind many schools have a zero phone policy.
400 USD can buy very good used camera system in 2023. My Olympus OM-D EM1 with 50mm f1.4 used is under $400, and it beats any Phone camera if not many new cameras.

@@blahbleh5671 Yea, either the motor on the zoom goes, the button for the zoom or the lens starts misting up (visible moisture inside the body) or out of focus images (auto focus just doesn't seem to get it right). Had ones that stopped writing to the SD card (multiple cards didn't work).
Some of the problems can be worked through but become so frustrating they are deal breakers after a while. The best example is how slow they become turning on, focusing, saving etc.
One of these camera companies should make a DSLR that has a ISP or some kind of processing chip, give it access to wifi so it can run algorithms and what not. I know some already do have stuff like that but I'd like to see one use like a Tensor chip or something haha. Just to see what it could do if it had a massive lens and sensor.
They won't do it because they will lose theor monopoly

They wont bcs a professional camera doesn't need ai, ai just ruins images by over sharpening, turning night into day, adding bokeh...., a raw file of a proper camera cant be beat with a phone photo and ai

Camera phone addict here but also use my Sony RX100 for more formalized/professional settings. The biggest advantage is having the performance of your best sensor at any zoom length within the range. Sure, I can have 10x zoom on an S22 Ultra but it’s using a far less capable sensor than their headlining main sensor. Or I can use the main sensor on Sony’s Xperia Pro I but I need to step back for portraits to avoid distortion. Well, that means I’m now cropping in on an already cropped sensor if I use the main lens or I can switch to the zoom lens where the sensor is far less capable.
Here’s hoping that Sony’s variable optical zoom solution from the Mark 3 & 4 make it to the main sensor of phones and then I can stop using my Rx100.
Yeah you can't compare iPhones or pixel to Sony RX series as just different leagues. Phones are great for Instagram posts and general use but these high end cameras are definitely a cut above. What Canon Nikon Sony gotta do is add an iOS or Android platform to allow developers to add features.
That is a good point. While the zoom capabilities on smartphones are improving, the smaller sensor will still be a limitation.
Depends which cameras you get. You can get an used compact camera for 400 dollars that has photos miles better than the latest Samsung or iPhone

The only thing i would finally add to smartphones is some analog buttons for camera, maybe on side, i think that one button for exposure and one slider for zoom or some settings, Av and Tv like on Canon and really i would use them much more. For me the biggest comfort in shooting with dslr is that most of settings you have on analog buttons. Touch screen is just less precise and slower to use.

I have a Canon G9x and G7x. Use them to take photos. But use my phone for daily quick photos. I just like using a old fashion camera
I have a nikon p600 and a canon G5X that I modified to full spectrum. I haven't tried removing the IR cut filter from a smartphone though. I may do some research and try it.
A couple of years ago my wife and I spent the afternoon taking photos in a very picturesque water, mountain and old village environment. My wife used an iPhone and I used an Olympus tg6. After editing on the computer I deleted all but about four of the iPhone photos because they were so far behind the compact camera quality it wasn’t funny. The iPhone photos that I kept was because of the good framing of the scene and the beauty of the environment which compensated for the lesser quality. Robin Wong who has great content on his channel, won’t have it that the smartphones are as good as the compact cameras after doing many comparisons. The camera manufacturers realised back in 2012 when the big crash in compact camera sales took place that the consumer was more interested in convenience than quality.
When you said zoom shots, I thought you would use that Oppo phone, but you didn't. Coz Oppo Reno 8 Pro doens't have a telephoto lens, instead it comes with a meagre 8MP ultra wide and 2MP macro combination, which is honestly stupid. No one should buy that phone. Oppo cleverly paid a lot of creators to make them think that this was a good camera phone, but only the main camera is good.
Its a mid range device. It's not supposed to have the best of the best. Want the best zoom on a phone? Get the s22 ultra
@@jamescassar5348 seriously? 8MP + 2MP combination is used by many manufacturers to fool customers into thinking that the model has a triple camera setup. Tech reviewers know about that. He didn't mention it, coz he was sponsored by oppo, its fine. But that doesn't mean that oppo gets to get away with it. Even the Samsung Galaxy S21 FE priced lower than this comes with a telephoto lens and a good Ultrawide camera. Do your research before commenting.
@@abhijith_mb I'm not praising the inclusion of the macro lense. I'm only stating that a good main lense is enough for people that don't wanna spend alot of money. Case In point the pixel a series. They can do alot with a 12 mp camera and they don't have crazy zoom lenses. On the subject of the f.e by Samsung, the camera options might be better but the main sensor definitely isn't and I still won't recommend that phone to people given how it won't get that much software updates now. I won't even recommend this phone as I detest oppo software. Either a pixel or one of the new one plus phones is good value for money. One plus for the inclusion of fast charging, great displays and overall smooth experience and the pixel for it's software and great camera for a cheaper price.than alternatives. I don't need to do research on this stuff bdw, I watch tech content on a daily basis from a wide variety of RUclips creators and I have a pretty solid idea on which phones are good for certain type of people thanks

I use Nikon coolpix 83x zoom... it costed me like 300 dollars 4 years back or so.... nothing can touch the zoom capabilities .love to update that to the latest one with more zoom but it was way more costly and tough to get hands on..
What you get to that big of a zoom range it's referred to as a bridge camera not a compact point-and-shoot. Personally I love my p950.
It's true, cell phone cameras take nicer basic pictures. I just hate using my thumb for everything! In a few years we'll have an entire population with major arthritis in our thumbs because we've worn those joints clean out. lol. I much prefer the mechanical orientation of the traditional point and shoot.
Good video but I feel the bigger reason is that smartphone cameras technology is moving far faster than point and shoot. What developments can you think of in the point and shoot world at the top of your head? I'll wait. Heck even DSLR and Now mirroless while they are improving I also see a lot of lag especially in the software department, the user interfaces are still clunky and I still don't understand why computational photography hasn't entered the DSLR world when it's making a killing in the smartphone world with absolutely tiny sensors and extremely limited space.
Camera companies are good at making hardware but poor in chip and software. They can't make that leap to Apple or iPhone computational photography. It's not in their DNA.
@@jonfreeman9682 That's a good observation but they will have to start looking into it as soon as possible, smartphone cameras are getting really good and the AI is getting really good too. I am actually shocked at the options we have I phones now. Even the built in image editor on my phone can replaces people and skies!
@@jackkraken3888 I think you're right. But right now the camera market has shrunk so much there isn't alot of money for development. They're good at hardware but will need an outsider from Apple or Google to build an iOS or Android platform that integrates with the camera. That could be a game changer. The consumer market is pretty much lost and don't see that coming back even if they add these software features. But it can build an ecosystem moat around their high end cameras allowing outside developers to add and improve functionality. But it can also diminish the need to upgrade and shrink the industry further. There's no easy solution. This is the classic innovator's dilemma. 😞

Because actual cameras then would become laggy and unreliable. Imagine sports photographer which has camera who likes to "think" :)
And... Video cameras. I bought a Sony Ax53 a couple of years back. I bought an iPhone 13Pro Max. I shoot a mixture of scenes and the iPhone is absolutely out of this world. I filmed a 3 minute production from footage filmed on my iPhone. Now it's my go to device for most of the work I do.
I'd like to see Google do a Pixel point & shoot camera with a much bigger sensor ,MP count and zoom than its phones but with all the software technology that goes into those phones. I have a Pixel 6 and it takes lovely photos that you can instantly upload to social media but it would be nice to have a Google Pixel point & shoot camera that could take even better quality/higher resolution photos that you could seamlessly connect to the phone to store in Google photos for social media use.
The sales volume simply isn't there. Pixels barely sell enough as is so cameras would sell even less. HP Kodak Fujifilm Casio Panasonic Olympus GE all got out of the game. Only Canon Nikon Sony are left and they pulled out of the consumer segment long ago. Sony still have high end RX series but what they should do is introduce an Android or iOS platform on their cameras and mirrorless as well so developers can add software features.
For point-and-shoot, you are right. That is recording. But photography is about playing with light and playing with time. Adjusting apertures to create different depths of field, adjusting shutter speeds to experiment with time and motion. Exposure compensation to intentionally fill shadows or burn out highlights. A camera like the Panasomic LX100 has analogue dials (not submenus inside of menus), click stops where are all simultaneously visible at a glance. CLICK STOPs instead of endless menus. How satisfying. It's similar to how stick shift on a sports car allows you to feel the road, the engine, the car itself. You need to make a RUclips piece in which you intentionally play with photographic image making by pushing to the edges of the default settings.
I bought a Panasonic Lumix in 2017. I was going to Japan and wanted something portable enough to fit in an oversized pocket with a significant optical zoom to ensure I was able to get the shots I wanted. My phone, and more specifically NO phone at that time could touch the immense optical zoom capabilities of that PAS. Now, it's basically useless.

Great rundown David, and talk about timing, last night I was watching an old British TV Show, called Midsomer Murders, and the episode was called 'Picture of Innocence' (aired in 2007), and it was about a rivalry between photographers, one group was all about using traditional film and the other had embraced digital... very hilarious episode, with dead bodies turning up everywhere! 🤣

I'd like to see a point and shoot camera with all the image processing on it that a smartphone has, I like the idea of having a zoom lens where I get consistent results and having a larger sensor. Maybe a 1 inch or even apsc.
Remember the point and shoots used in this video are several years old I don't think it's the best comparison because the Sony zv1 blows my Galaxy s22 out of the water and the Sony fits perfectly fine in my pocket.

I have no use of nighttime photos that don't show what my eyes are seeing.
I have an Olympus waterproof camera, sand resistance, drop proof, freeze proof. Underwater photography is fun and I don't have to take my smartphone into the beach or sea. I would love to see an indestructible case or tough smartphone capable of wind, sand, snow resistance. Great viewing. 👍

To be honest the camera videos and photos still looks better to me, and i hate that ppl want ultra bright photos at night, why do you take night photos then? Just take those photo during the day, if you want to shot at night let the shadows remain shadows. Also the b500 is more a zoom camera so you should have shown that it can go way further than any smartphone optically. And lastly a phone can never look like a camera bcs it hasnt a proper lens and cant have so the quality will always be better on a camera with a good lens even if you might have less shrapness, less details, more noise
yes, thats true. I recently got point n shoot. I was exhausted by oversharpened photos from phone. Now my digital camera takes photos like i want to frame.

I know I might be in the minority, but the "use on auto" mindset was what was keeping me from a point and shoot. When I finally picked up one (a tz-100 from panasonic) and shot on auto, I came to the same conclusion as the video does. I then tried shooting raw, and just developing a couple of presets I liked, and oh boy the two categories (point and shoot and smartphone) isn't even in the same league. The point and shoot camera is so much cleaner, the colors more natural, and since I'm shooting raw (which a few smartphones can do admitedly) the files are much more flexible than from my smartphone. There's also something nice in having a tool for the job, and I find myself enjoying taking photos more with a point and shoot.
I just ordered a Canon G15 to have as a pocket camera. I am excited to try it.

@ishayshoo its been a good little camera. I like taking it to the museum and stuff when i dont feel like wagging all the lenses around. Only down side ar the moment is I have two line vertically down each side of the lcd. It doesnt bother the photos so far though.
A phone will never beat a 20x-30x smooth optical zoom compact camera.
phone camera photos just look so artifical comapred to a digital camera. it looks way processed that it looks kinda fake.

I always wanted a point and shoot, and finally last year i bought one. I was sure that there is no way that my iphone 11 can take better photos than a dedicated camera. Boy was i wrong. The processing is so important and i sold the camera a week later. Tech is amazing!

@@jonfreeman9682I guess it does and it doesn’t based on who you are and what you are willing to sacrifice in time and what kind of photos you can take. Sometimes you don’t need processing…and sometimes you have to rely one it, *heavily* , and just sometimes you really cannot easily replicate some aspects of results a *lens* used on a fancy camerabody produces. AI can somewhat replicate some aspects but then you haven’t taken the photo, but then what you created feels more like what a director tells a cinematographer to capture, except still replicas of the real thing.
And what camera it was? Overprosesed similar images are boring and not always better.
Dude i have samsung note 22 ultra which is the one of the most prestigious phone back then. It ain't shit my any means of "smartphone" context.
But i can assure that my old nikon D3S or even my D3200 quality is over the roof compared to my Samsung note. So probably you mean "smartphone > PNS" yeah probably. But smartphone kills "dedicated camera" which means ALL kind of dedicated camera its big time wrong. Sorry my man, just an opinion

Thanks for your great videos. I am one of those rare birds with a PAS camera, RX100 VII. to your point though i agree if you know what you're doing and you can negotiate the ergonomics of the phone it ids more convenient using the phone. But the issue here, I believe is the difficulty in handling the phone and taking snaps in bright sunlight.
i've been messing around with my Pixel 7 Pro and Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS80 and the sensor size on my phone is actually BIGGER than the compact. 1/1.3" vs 1/2.3". the phone sensor is just plain higherquality too, even just examining both raw image formats from both, unless the phone is still doing some processing i don't know about. i also can't seem to find a compact camera with a sensor above 20 Megapixels... meanwhile the phone does 50, again leading a hands down better image. it's sad how the market is stagnating :(
The pixel 7 actually does pixel binning, making the photos 12.5 mp
Smartphone sales are down, I hate smartphone cameras. No lanyard just means dropping it all the time.
I don't know if this counts, but having an action camera (like a GoPro) that i can use to dive and outdoors but also i use it as webcam because the one on my laptop is pretty bad and the action camera have a wider field of view so looks better not showing only my face many times.

ERGONOMICS! Phones have horrible ergos - easy to slip and drop, no physical buttons and dials and way too much DOF with their tiny sensors. The missing ingredient is an ergo phone grip with customizable buttons and dials. How has no one come up with this?
I was just scripting about this, last year's summer holiday I felt happy with my Ricoh GR for traveling. This year, I ditched the pocketable point-and-shoot GR and just went with my Xperia1 along with Leica M8 just for the nostalgic sake of it.
I have a very good smartphone camera ( huawej mate 10 pro) but I have more fun using my old Panasonics DMC SZ9 Real pocket small digital point and shot camera. My phone camera, I'm only using for taking paper photos and other job things. Already bought few other cheap small Real point shot camera cants wait for them to arrive.
True to some extent, but my friends prefers the natural look of digital camera PAS ZS100. Thats why we kept 14 pro max on pocket whole time. Smartphone try to make photos look too good, hence loosing realism, over brightening the image. Phone photos always look like generic phone photos no matter what. But camera photos are 2-3 steps better.
Just out of curiosity, have you ever tried ProRAW?
Eh, i like my Olympus TG-5 way more than my phone for macro photography. Plus i leave my phone (computer) home and take more photos without distractions.

Imagine if point and shoots had the smartphone tech. Those would be true game changers that may challenge the larger mirrorless. - probably why it doesn't exist

Camera manufactures don't know how to add phone tech. They're mostly hardware plays. They should hire some Apple and Google people to help add Android iOS platform.
technical and software advancement stopped for point and shoot camera a while ago, the things you showed that a smartphone can do better, if the same software is implemented on a much better hardware which all point and shoot camera has, it can kill all smartphones at once, the point is no one trying to make this form factor a stand out. still believe for a less technical person to capture good photo will be much better with a point and shoot if they try to improve software.

@@evernam993m8 You know what's funny is after WWII Japan was famous the most innovative electronics. Back in the 70s 80s and even 90s made in Japan was a sign of quality. Sony Panasonic Toshiba Hitachi Sanyo JVC Casio were famous for their consumer electronics. Japan owned the camera industry. But then they lost to American innovation and China in manufacturing and sadly even their camera stronghold have eroded with the digital paradigm shift. Japan had their moment in the sun. LoL

Errrrr none of those oppo photos look better than the point and shoots. Was waiting to see any situations that do but didn’t like them over the actual cameras.
Honestly though... I'm perfectly happy with my 5-year old iPhone, just the camera sucks and I'd rather get a capable point and shoot for travels than cough out $1000+ for a new iPhone, when my phone is perfectly fine doing non-image stuff. I can't be the only one just wanting an equally capable point and shoot so we can keep our old working phones.
Just buy an iPhone 13 Pro it's the best
The camera on my iPhone SE is only 12MP. A lot of these P&S cameras are still better quality in the ~$150 price range. I'd rather have all my pictures physically though and make photo albums. Hard drives eventually crap out and if you don't have backups....

Though I never did P&S (came from 35mm SLR and the long delay for focus and shutter release on early P&S digital models made me decide against them) I find myself taking out my DSLR less (though not never) and smartphone more.

Actually point and shoot cameras have HDR e.t.c It is very easy to find scenario when your OPPO will lose the battle.
I would use my smartphone camera more except for one deal-breaker: ergonomics. Smartphones are almost the worst possible shape for taking photos. Shooting one-handed requires the dexterity and practice of a concert pianist. Just as I get everything lined up for a shot I invariably accidentally touch the screen somewhere that causes it to go into some weird mode like video or HDR or something else annoying and I lose the shot.
I only ever use a phone to shoot if I absolutely have to, else it’s a P&S or one of my DSLRs.
Many modern point and shoots use AI image processing like smart phones. IE the Sony BionZ engine used in the RX100 series.
I bought a compact camera specifically for it's zoom, cuz the phone I had (Samsung S21U) was too big for me and I don't like handling that everyday. However, after I bought the Lumix compact zoom I realized the samsung zoom is nothing compare to this small 8 years old camera. Anything further than x10 zoom, the samsung couldn't capture it but rebuild the picture by AI instead. In the end, if we put all the spec comparison aside, I still like the feeling of taking picture with a camera rather than with my phone. I have a mirrorless camera and a film camera, a compact one is like a toy can I play around 🤗
when Canon or Nikon put that AI technology into a real camera with its MUCH larger sensor and far better lenses that will be a game changer..... At this time a camera will out perform a cellphone..... but you have to do the edit and adjustments in separate software.... a skill 99% of point and shooters don't have
Larger sensors means slower readouts and more heat. Larger sensors aren’t always better.
Nowadays people sell point&shoot cameras for a very low price, so if you are explore a little bit second hand offer, you can find interesting cameras for "no" price. I own a point&shoot camera since 2005, and in the past 18-19 years i bought maybe 10 of them( second hand but used very little, so let say like new). I spent no more than 40$ for the most expensive one, and I still love to shoot with them, mostly for fun or memories. I also have DSLR, Pentax k-70, that I bought it brand new but very very cheap, less then 200$. I agree, taking pictures with camera becomes wierd, and people start to get frightening when you try to shoot them with big camera😂. Kids even dont understand why are you doing that with such a tool, when you can do it with your smarphone. Very few people will notice the difference which picture was taken with good camera. In my youth I was practicing art fotography ( analogue b&w), and until now I consider shooting for art purposes only shooting with a camera. But I respect that nowadays smarphone cameras are very powerful tool in your pocket, which is everywhere where you are. Also, even middle class phones take very good pictures nowadays, and higher priced phones are not for every customer. And when you have a powerful camera, I guess you can have not so expensive phone. Than you have two devices, one for everyday use, the other for special occasions.
It hasn't killed the point and shoot or compact camera in my eyes, and I own analogue and digital cameras, and in all types (mirrorless, SLR, DSLR, APSC, half and full frame), brands etc ... My most used cameras are my Lumix LX7, GF1, GX1, TZ90 and Canon G16 and S120.
My phones camera is a back up .. Maybe 5% of my shots are taken on my mobile phone.
Smartphones really have become amazing! I still prefer Point and Shoots but yeah, I mostly go with either my phone or my DSLR :(
None of those shots used the flash. I think point n shoots may fair better in that regard.
So for sit down video content I use a Sony Zeiss/ZV1 which some use for vlogging due to it’s small body. However, No, I do not carry it with me outside the house for vlogging. Video vlogging out doors I use my iPhone 13 Pro Max. Scared I will lose or drop the actual camera. Plus, it’s just more convenient to carry the phone for vlogging when you naturally already will be using your phone anyway.
Point and shoot cameras for the win. While I admit smartphones can beat some entry level point and shoot cameras, it will not be able to dethrone midrange and high-end models.
But there's one thing smartphone has that high end cameras don't is advanced software for image stacking. Pixel even has special imagine processing CPU. Cameras have simple chipsets not like Snapdragon Tensor or Bionic so cameras tend to rely on hardware like bigger better lens and image sensor but not sure it beats software.
@@jonfreeman9682That is true. However, the reliance on software can actually be a disadvantage if you want full control over your photos and videos. As good as the latest smartphone software has become, it will never be able to replicate full manual controls.
With a smartphone I get a phone and a camera. With a point und shooter all I get is a camera. If camera makers were smart, they would have put a phone in the camera. But they are not that smart.

Have never seen a phone good at zooming and good in low light. They just suck. Point and shoot with a bigger sensor and optical zoom is just going to be better. I was impressed by the 4k video and image stability in the new phones though. Certainly approaching the latest GoPro quality. Think they are at the point of doing away with action cameras.
Why don't the full frame cameras just incorporate android OS or their cpus in them. you get the magic brains software and the nice hardware
The camera is dead it’s time to focus on the little devices that are just as powerful. I do feel for all my brothers and sisters that spent thousands on top of thousands on hardware but it’s over
It is not over until the hardware catches up. Smartphone cameras still have some ways to go in order to replace a point and shoot camera. Smartphones need to have one inch sensors along with a variable aperture. Also, the ultra-wide and telephoto lenses need to have big sensor upgrades.
Also, if you compare a smartphone to a high end point and shoot like the Leica Q3, there is no contest. A smartphone will take years to catch up.
I dont know how to say this but those point and shoots made better looking image for you.

Throughout the examples, the Canon and Lumix won in each one that was metered correctly. The challenging light scenarios can be handled by proper metering and HDR. The phone's HDR looked fake. It was actually cool when phones started going this in like 2015 but at this point the novelty wore off and it honestly looks unnatural and unappealing to me. I can appreciate that not every user wants to meter exposure but that doesn't make phones better at photography, just foolproof. Which sadly explains the drop in sales.
I get that you had to side with the phone because the phone company gave you one and expected a positive video, lol. But you couldn't even use it for the zoom shoot. I have one of those "Android flagships" that you used for the zoom shot and let me tell you, the zoom quality doesn't compare to my Lumix ZS200 at all. Your zoom sample looks okay on my 1080p tablet when it's divided into quarters, but IRL it's barely usable. The telephoto lens is attached to a pathetic little sensor and the phone will actually switch you back to digital zoom in the main sensor half the time because the zoom one can't handle much.
Night shots, yeah, my Samsung can make night look like poorly lit day, but wild idea - I want night to look like night, lmao. I do enjoy the AI processing for wide angle shots and I do appreciate that the algorithms can make better photos in low light indoor environments like museums and aquariums, etc. I mostly use my camera for zoom, and it's nice to escape the fake deep-frying as well.
The moral is, most people who ever used a high end compact digital camera (for more than a RUclips video) will never agree that a phone can replace it.

This isn’t about DSLR. It’s point and shoots. There is still a use for DSLRs and Mirrorless cameras but not the point and shoot.
Not to mention bokeh on smartphone cameras look fake.
I beg to disagree. I recently noticed a problem on the back camera of my iphone making my self or my wife look way more fat. After some testing and investigation I noticed Im not alone. It seems these new lenses are adding a huge distortion. Therefore, the point and shoot will now become the new go to option when you want to be in the picture. The are models which you can wirelessly transfer your photos to the phone so its definitely a great and better option.
People look fatter because some lenses of phones are wide angle. Newer phones with multiple cameras have lenses that are less wide.
@@soreeyez I disagree. Mine is an iPhone 11,my wife's is an iPhone 13 and I have seen the same complain on iPhone 15.
Now, you can test by getting away of the phone, getting closer or placing yourself close to the borders.
Finally, I do not see this happening in huawei P series (I have a P30 Pro)
There is something odd taking place on apple phones. Yeah, it may be related to some lenses but, at least my iPhone 11 wasn't behaving this way in the past.

In general lense distortion is more obvious with lenses that are wider angle. If I get close to my phone's camera, my nose👃 will appear clown like. 😅

@@soreeyez yeah I agree. Ive got a bunch of lenses for my Nikon Camera but still doesnt explain what changed on these phones that now behave exactly like the lens image is received.
Im starting to think there was a software feature that used to process the image and made it look like a regular >50mm 1/8f lens and now this “feature” is no longer present.
For instance, yesterday my iwatch got a notification it will no longer sync to exercise machines which was a great plus why I got it.
Coming back to the iphone problems, Im starting to think in going back to the point and shoot units as these dont have this distortion problems and now some models you can wirelessly transfer the pics to he phone for later review/edit

Although cameras on mobile phones are handy I prefer point
And shoot cameras for reason of security because on a digital camera you don't have random apps that want to see the photos on your SD card or internal memory but on smart phones you do plus mobile phones leak information like crazy cameras don't also playing around with a proper camera is more rewarding than using a mobile phone using phones takes something away from the experience as a whole it would be like walking into two virtually the same restaurants only one employs short order cooks the other proper chefs is the same difference with mobile phones and proper cameras while mobile phones do a great job of taking pictures the phone does all the work but with a camera you can let it do all the work if you want but for better results a true photographer makes some of the choices themselves therefore adding a certain amount of artistic licence and style to the photo just as a chef does with a meal that you order in a restaurant
I have a Samsung camera somewhere....it 's practically new but even years ago the phones were already overtaking it.
Point & Shoot Camera has to die, when used pro cameras like Olympus EM1 mark i or Canon 5D mark i are so cheap these days. Usability wise, phones are way better, qualities wise, Used pro cameras are way better. I got my Olympus EM1 mark i body for less than $200, and Zuiko 50mm f1.4 for $70.
