    My GM1 has been my travel camera for the past 8 years, easy to carry in a jacket pocket or a small bag. Recently replaced it with the Panasonic G100, a bit larger but easier to hold and has a flip screen.

    I still use my GM1 in holidays with the 12-32mm lens, that provides OIS , so handheld low light shots with low shutterspeed is no problem , and with the new lightroom denoise functionallity one can really improve your results as you showed. For low light indoor events with moving people/objects I have and prefer a Sony full frame camera, greetings from the Netherlands.

    Alternatives: Panasonic GF7/GF9 and GX800/880 that are very similar and yet doesn't have the high price of an X100 of the 4/3 sensors. Also they all have a flip screen that is nice to have on street photography.

    Used it as a second body to my X-E4 while traveling. Kept the 42.5mm f/1.7 on it. Makes it like the size of a digital compact with the zoom lens extended.
    The controls are terrible, specifically the command wheel, and it doesn't have useable tracking autofocus which is my favorite way to shoot street, but other than that it's not bad.
    The wheel is impossible to use without accidentally hitting the D-pad and makes it very difficult to change the aperture quickly.
    If you like small manual lenses with manual aperture rings it's a great fit for that.

      @@TomCalton I recently upgraded from M4/3 to the Panasonic S5ii and full frame. I was really tempted to keep the GM1 as it’s a jewel of a camera, but I figured that for daily carry around and skiing it would be left at home in favour of my DJI Osmo action 4 and iPhone.
      After seeing this video I kinda regret selling it, though phone and action camera tech has improved hugely in the past 10 years so not losing much IQ these days.

      Panasonic seem to have from their announcements put up the white flag in this area of photography and consider the phone has won. There is no reason to believe the disappearance of compact kit will be restricted purely to fixed lens kit. Even Fuji seem to have walked away from their more compact rangefinder style cameras and the SLR looking kit is the only choice. There is just no market size to fund any wide variety of kit style.

    I've been using one for 10 years as a carry on, and it did a great job. I've put the 14mm f2.5 on it -and nothing else!- that is marginaly bigger than your lens (and is still cheap at around 220 GBP) and I've had countless excellent images with it. I added a leather mini-grip similar to yours. Only problem with cam is the on/off ring button got lost at some point, but you can still operate it with your nail. Also, wish they had working Wifi, but you can still buy cheap Wifi SD cards and that's what I've been using to transfer files to the phone etc for 'social' snaps... I also wish they had continued that line a bit further, it is a cracking little camera.

    Interesting! I didn't even know such a small mirrorless camera exists. For street / vacation, however, this setup with the wide angle lens would not make much sense to me, as the smartphone replaces that probably fairly well and does not cost "extra luggage". However, I'd love such a camera for *portrait* work. Can you recommend a decent portrait lens, which is as compact and lightweight as possible, but has a very wide aperture (0.95, 1.2 would be ideal) and a focal length equivalent to 50-85mm fullframe? Can be manual, AF would not be so important in this case. It doesn't even have to be razorblade sharp, as I love if lenses produce some character in the images. That character, however, should have some appeal to it and not just be a soft image. ;)
    Thanks a lot for that video and - maybe - for a lens recommendation!

    These cameras are becoming more and more popular and prices are rising up. I got a GM5 last year. The price doubled since then. The GM1 price went up too although not as steep. I would recommend the GM5 over the GM1 because of the EVF. Matter of personnal preference of course.
    There is also a third option. That is the G100 which I consider to be a successor to the GM5 (with 2 extra centimeters in width and height).The G100 has a more modern M43 sensor and a rotating LCD. My experience with the GM5 is that I would appreciate that rotating LCD rather often, unless you enjoy crawling on the ground :)

    I sold mine. My Samsung Mini gave me consistently better results especially in low light, even though it has a smaller sensor. Also, two of the three Mini lenses have OIS.
    Another thing I had a problem with on the GM1 is that the function wheel on the back is very fiddlely. But I agree it is a beautiful camera, the output just did not wow me as much as the one from my Mini. And I used it with the Oly 12/2 mostly.
    I know it's a different focal length than you use here, but if you have a chance to get the 17mm for the Mini, for my taste and preferences that lens is mind blowing. I used to own a Ricoh GR and I sold it too, the Mini was better for me.

    GM1 is my best all time favourite and most satisfied camera, I felt I was wise that chosen M43 system, now still amazed with it's outstanding performance on such tininess, well it does has a lot of "deficiencies" compared to its "functionally bloated" chunky siblings, however it's still more than capable for my hobby shooting needs, after all compactness is the major reason people had chosen M43, aren't we? LONG LIVE M43!

    I've had a GM1 for about 10 years ago and I agree with your evaluation. However I've not used it much after getting the LX100 MKI as it has an EVF Leica lens, Leaf shutter and shoots good 4k. The 7A 18mm would be a good addition.

    • @hedydd2
      @hedydd2 9 месяцев назад +1

      I have the Leica D-Lux 7 which is the equivalent to the LX100 MkII and these fixed lens zoomy cameras are great. They are not as good as the GX80/85 though, with the lens being the main, probably only advantage even though it is not interchangeable. The lens is on the bulky side but very well engineered and f1.7 gives it a massive advantage in low light compared to the f6 lens in the video.

    • @jackoneil3933
      @jackoneil3933 9 месяцев назад

      @@hedydd2 Yes the Gx85 has advantages over the LX100. And I have a full suite of M43 lenses, but got the LX100 as compact travel stills and video camera and the fast Leica zoom on the LX100 makes for a more compact kit than the compact interchangeable lens bodies. I've used the LX100 for some occasional light production work like interviews News gathering and B-Roll and cut it with a Blackmagic and GH4.
      I also did some hand-held low-light documentary scenes with the LX100 it preformed well.
      I opted for the silver version to look like a tourist. With a DSLR or production camera I get harassed, but almost never does anyone say anything about the silver LX100. And a couple of times people asked if i was taking video I've said "Oh, this shoots film'.
      Hanging the LX100 off one shoulder and using the smart phone app zoom and operate the camera, and I've got some really good candid street shots that way as you look like a someone browsing on a phone with a camera around his neck or side.

      Uhm, i will give my 2 cents having owned an GX-7 (same sensor as the GM-1) and the X-E2(same as the X-M1 but with passable autofocus)
      The Panasonic will win hands down in
      Video quality
      Useability with touchscreen
      Autofocus speed.
      Also there are more native primes available that are both small and affordable.
      The Fujifilm
      Better image quality
      Better all-round system with their modern camera's where you can share your investments.
      While me and my girlfriend (The G3 and GX7 we used to own were primarily her tools) completely moved to fujifilm.
      I can't deny that in terms of fun in small packages Panasonic with M43 had the advantage. It just had a significant advantage in small primes.
      We just didn't care as much for those advantages and prefered the rather excellent versatile kit zoom that came with the Fujifilms. That it was slightly bigger and heavier was something we did not mind.

    Bought a black/silver body on ebay from a privat seller about five years ago and payed around 140 € for it, including strap, body cap and, more importantly, original Panasonic lithium battery and charger. The battery must be almost ten years old by now and is still good. Added a third party cheapo. Bonus: the charger is also perfectly usable for the GX80 batteries, despite them being thicker than the GM1's ones. That way I saved the money for a third party charger for the GX80, I did not intend to use the camera body as a charging cradle, which was Panasonic's idea. They only delivered a USB cable and an AC to 5V DC converter with the DX80.

    I've had my eye on a Lumix gm1 for years, but never actually got one (a regret, to be sure). I used to have a G9 and a GX85 (both fantastic cameras as well) and had quite a collection of m43 lenses, so getting a smaller camera to pair up with the 20mm lumix lens made sense. (Side note: I also had an Olympus om-d e-m10 mark ii which was another great micro 4/3 camera).
    Really, micro 4/3 is just a great format for compact photography. Now to find a camera you haven't featured yet so that they're not super expensive on ebay...

I'm getting into street photography a bit more now and want to buy a small compact camera like this with the ability to change lenses, preferably something similar to the 7 artisans model you demonstrated. For just a little size compromise you can get another overly underrated tiny M43 camera which I think is perfect for stills, Xiaomi’s Yi M1.
    It has a 20MP sensor, way better battery life, 4k30p video, and is dirt cheap. I’ve seen used ones go for less than 70€
    That camera is criminally underrated for the price to performance it has, especially for used ones. It was always overlooked because of terrible initial reviews it got due to the bad firmware. They fixed that later but it never got the love it deserved. If you can, please try it out, you won’t be disappointed and it would be another banger video idea.

      In terms of processing images, yeah, it's not bad at all. Obviously, it's 10 years old so it'll be slower than more modern cameras, but I'd say it's plenty fast enough for street photography

    Bad JPG colours. The GM5 is better imho as it has an EVF. Focuses very fast for SAF. But it is quite cramped so I swapped it and the 14mm lens for a Ricoh GR and then a Fuji XE2, the latter was far more fun to use.

    In all honesty, having used Lumix systems before, although not the GM / GX Lineup, i find it pretty cute yet astonished seeing a camera thats as small as a pack of playing cards still being able to put a MFT sized sensor in it, Reminds me of the other Lumix camera that had a Full Frame sensor in it despite being also pocketable, Great Video as Always Mister!

    I do have butter fingers and dropped and broke two of them. It breaks instantly when you drop it. I bought the small olympus pen mini and even dropped the pen mini and it's built like a tank. I loved the images and touch focus of the GM1, but I couldn't handle the ergonomics due to me being clumsy. Olympus pen mini is still stylish, and way cheaper than the GM1.

    I had the GM5 and sold it. No image stabilisation and does get quite large with lenses. I was using the Olympus 17/1.8 with it. Jpegs had an over processed compact camera look to it. I had much better image quality from the Olympus EM1 Mark 1.
    My only regret was selling it in 2017…. Worth more now in 2024

      @TomCalton  9 месяцев назад

      Thanks! I mean, yeah, this would work, but really the main strength of this camera is its size. If you don't need a super small camera then there are potentially better and cheaper options out there for what you need. Do you NEED it to be super small?

  • @tomfenn7149
    @tomfenn7149 8 месяцев назад

    If you liked the GM1, wait until you get a load of the GM5! I wish Panasonic would return to producing these tiny gems. Also an alternative if you want something even cheaper,albeit with a slightly noisier shutter, take a look at the Olympus E-PM2. What the GM1 gains with an electronic and silent shutter, the E-PM2 more than makes up with in-camera 3-axis stabilisation and the option to mount a high-res EVF.

Also I really like the “simple” look of the pictures you took with this set. For me its not really about the highest quality pictures, but the moments you capture and the charme delivered. Try the Sony RX100 rubber grip. It fits almost perfectly, not quite as effective as the screw in metal grips which shift the hand to the right therefore opening up hand control but it does a good job for a lot less money.

    • @alex-reay
      @alex-reay 9 месяцев назад

      If it’s a knurled grip then it’ll most likely be an original Panasonic grip. I have one for my GM5 and wouldn’t be without it, it shifts my hand and fingers to the right which frees up access to the control dials and buttons whereas a front mounted rubber grip shifts the right hand to left causing it to bunch up. A proper screw in metal grip is a priceless accessory.
