  • Nyoni Colored Pencil Review | The Best Budget Colored Pencils
In this review we are going to be taking a look at the Nyoni Colored Pencils from China. They are what would be considered a budget colored pencils so if budget colored pencils are not what you are looking for then this review may not be for you, however, I have a load of high end reviews which might be more helpful.
Despite the Nyoni being classified as budget colored pencils, in my opinion, they are only budget in price, the quality of these pencils are a sight to behold. Check out the links below for more parts of the review.

Thank you for your integrity, people from all income levels are looking for pencils so that they to can enjoy coloring as a hobby, no one should be made to feel left out because they can't afford the best of the best. Frankly, I can afford what I want and to tell you the truth I love, love, love my Brutfuner Square 120 set. So again, thank you for helping everyone no matter their budget get the pencil for them!! :)

Thank you so much Eileen really appreciate your comment. I have the 120 Brutfunner to review but I have also just purchased the 520 set and when my wife finds out I am for the high jump, but I know so many people have been asking about them and I wanted to review them for you all. But I will have the 120 set up soon.

Honestly Eileen whilst the expensive professional pencils are very nice, unless you are selling your artwork, you don't really need them. I do professional work so I do have the top sets but I also have the Brutfuner & I just love them! They are a perfectly good pencil and apart from the lightfastness they perform much the same as some of the so called top end sets. I prefer my Brutfuner over my Polychromos!

@@TheArtGearGuide I will be looking out with interest to see what you say about the 520 set. So few reviews and concerns they are not good quality, etc. If it is as good as this set and the colours are different? It will be popular.

The high end stuff is supposed to be for artists who sell art and were never meant for the average hobbyist. That being said, people at lower income levels can't afford to waste 60 bucks on something they won't like so these reviews are important to me. I personally went with Arteza after they became open stock and dealt with the issue they had a year ago.

Thanks for this video! I’ve been curious about these pencils recently!
I’ve just done a few searches and found that these are another manufacturer offers “white-labeling” - so Nyoni are the original pencils, but other companies can buy them with their own logos and packaging to sell under their own names- like Brutfuner do. Meaning it’s quite possible they’ll start showing up on Amazon as different brand names, but the same set of pencils.
I did similar research for my own Brutfuner review I’m doing this week, because I know a lot of people are confused about how white-labeling works and unsure what it means when buying pencils. It’s more common that we realize!
It’s not a bad thing, especially if they are good pencils! It makes art more affordable and accessible. As long as you do your research before buying if you intend to “collect” multiple brands and don’t want duplicates.

Yeah I think there is a set showing up in America under the name of Merkart or something like that and they are supposed to be the Nyoni but I have no way of confirming that so I’ll have to wait until I can get hold of that set and compare.

How strange - the Zulu word (South Africa) for Nyoni is bird, and the picture on the box is feathers! 😬. I wonder if there is any connection at all to Africa or if it is a Chinese word and the feathers are a total coincidence? Interesting! Thanks for the review 👍👌

The Markart 120 set is a private label version of these. No eraser or sharpener, but the tray instead has elastic bands to help lift the trays up. Just got a set of those based purely on how they look and the price point. ($30 US for the 120 set, which is insane.)

I've just returned to drawing after far too many years away, and although Faber Castell Polychromos are on my "To buy" list, I wanted to buy something inexpensive to use for now until I feel my talent warrants the splurge on luxury. Thank you for your reviews. I've spent the last few days watching and listening, and have just ordered the 120 tin of Nyoni pencils to get me started. Can't wait for them to arrive. For now the Polychromos are on my wish list, but I'm sure there'll be lots of other purchases now I've fallen in love with drawing again! Keep up the good work... Your reviews are amazing!!

I have tested many pencils. I use the top line brands in my work. The Nyoni is so close to the Polychromos it is hard to tell them apart in some colors. These blow my Brutfuner pencils aside as well as Soucolor as far as cheaper pencils go. The Schipirerr Farben are similar, but Nyoni edges them out. They layer lightly like a dream. I am pretty picky.

I have this set and love it to bits. It is now in a 252 slot pencil case along with polychromos. The sharpener works amazingly well on this set of pencils. Better than my other sharpeners other than the hand crank one I have. Just as a heads up, apparently the 200 set of obos pencils is a nyoni set. I have not bought that (yet) but those who have say they are nyoni. But 200 set.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 года назад

Yeah I have had a lot of people tell me this, the only thing I don’t understand is from what I can tell the colors in the Nyoni don’t look to be present in the Obos, but I could be wrong as I haven’t got my set yet of the Obos. Also, Nyoni has only recently released this 120 set, if they had 200 colors, why not release a Nyoni set of 200 as this would mean more money for the company and after all that is the name of the game. But I will be able to tell better when I get the set of Obos, reach out to a factory or manufacturer or just test them side by side. So I will have to wait and see.

I would be happy to send you what you need (some pencils from, the full 48 Markart set or an Amazon gift card) in order for you to continue to educate the community. I use them in my artwork. I wanted to have cheaper brands for handmade cards etc. I am able,to test many products and have most of the cheaper lines of pencils as a result.
I have to say, I use all of my pencils for various things and every time I use my Nyoni pencils, I carry on and on about how wonderful they are. They are simply delightful. The greens and some blues are quite scratchy though. they do remind me of Holbein. All together I think they are worth the money. They are about $60 AUD which is considered cheap here. Thanks again for a great review.

Hi Ellie, that is something I have noticed, when I am able to source links for subscribers in Australia the prices are crazy high. I don’t check things like how strong the Pound is against the US Dollar or Euro etc, but the prices for Australia always seem so incredibly high and from what I can gather from a lot of ex Army mates who moved to Australia, the standard of living is not much different from the UK, so I don’t get why the art supply prices always seem so high. I always feel bad adding Aus prices because when I do my review I talk about the product with a view to price worth and for the most part, the UK, US, Euro and Canada are all similar price brackets.

@@TheArtGearGuide I think its that we are a long way from most places, not China of course, but mainly that we are a small market. As you will be aware, the more units sold the lower the price. I am playing with these pencils as we speak and love them on most papers. I have colouring books too and they work so well in those. I find colouring relaxing when I don't have a lot of time. At the moment I don't have a studio as family are living in it so room is also an issue. Hard to do original work when a toddler can get to your work lol.

I wish these were available on Amazon, I've never bought from Aliexpress, I find the site really confusing & they don't seem to accept PayPal. Also it seems the price has been hiked up, these are now over £40 for the 120 set.

    • @TheArtGearGuide
      @TheArtGearGuide  3 года назад +2

I’ve just double checked the link on my review and your right they have gone up a bit but only to £32 which still isn’t bad for 120 pencils of this quality. It might be my fault that they have gone up because if people are buying them they might do what all companies do and capitalise on the extra sales.
With regards to Ali being confusing you are indeed right, the first time I used it I was confused and I must admit, the item I purchased was really cheap because I didn’t expect it to arrive, but it did and this is why I’ve talked about Ali in recent videos because the service is first class.
You can use PayPal but to pay this way I think you have to set up an account, which is just a user name and password, this is when you have the option of putting in your PayPal account, debit card or credit card.
When you click on the link I’ve supplied it will take you straight to the Nyoni products. Once there you will see about ten icons, all showing different sets of Nyoni and set sizes because there are watercolour Nyoni but they are a different tin Color. Select the set size of Nyoni you want, 120, 72, 48 or 36 and once you select the set you want add it to your cart. Go into your cart and if you don’t want to set up an account you will be asked all your shipping details etc and then you enter your payment details and I am almost positive that you will see a PayPal icon at this stage because I have payed via PayPal.
It can be confusing at first, I did find it confusing when I first ordered, but if you are really not comfortable, don’t put yourself through worry and upset for a set of pencils. I wish they were available on Amazon as well but as with so many foreign products it might take a bit of time before they finally arrive here.

Hi my friend, I think availability is the only matter to consider between both the Bruynzeel Expression and Nyoni and a lot of that will depend upon where you live in the world.
I love both pencils, but for me personally, the Expression pencils are much easier and quicker to replace. Neither set are sold open stock, so you would need to buy a new set entirely when you run out of pencils, which isn’t too much of an issue financially speaking as both sets are relatively inexpensive.
It’s a difficult choice, I love both sets if I had the same access to both pencils if probably go for the Nyoni and mainly because of the palette. I really enjoy botanical art and the Nyoni set are a little better suited for my style of art. Sorry I couldn’t give you a better answer but essentially check out which set you can get access to most and you won’t go too far wrong with either set. They are both excellent budget pencils.

I am really sure that they are made by the same factory as the arteza pencils. The wood looks the same, smells the same, the barrel looks like it has the same paint on it, but Arteza has different color shades in their set. The core looks the same. When you look at both when not sharpened yet, the top of the pencil looks similar.
You can test similar colors next to each other, one blue of nyoni is the same shade as one blue from arteza, the shade is not always the same but when you test this two next to each other, they feel exactly the same, nyoni color number N36 and arteza Mykonos blue, this two showes it the best.
But in general all of them feel the same. Some of arteza feel scratchy and some of nyoni aswell, especially the dark greens in both sets

@@TheArtGearGuide I will be looking forward to it. I am in dire need of a pencil case and these two brands appealed to me. From what I hear, they are very similar, but I don't see anyone on RUclips comparing them. I wanted to decide quickly, because the prices here are attractive, I fear they will go up.

Wouldn't the best be quality pencils but smaller sets? Do these pencils use FSC wood, are they sustainable? Because cheap pencils, and especially Chinese stuff don't give a damn about that.

I asked the manufacturer if these were vegan and the answer was yes. They're based on vegetable oil and pigments with no links to creatures of any type.

I’m still trying to get to the bottom of this before I say definitively one way or the other. There is another pencil on the market that is, basically exactly the same as the Nyoni and made by the very same people and when I asked them about that pencil being Vegan, I was told no. What you have to remember when asking a lot of these much newer companies questions, at least in my experience, is this. Most of the time you are just talking to a representative, not a specialist in the actual product. They often tell you what you want to hear. When I first started out reviewing products about 7 years ago now, I found this out the hard way. I thought because I asked the company, I am right in the information I am providing. Then I developed a system. Ask a question, come back a day or so later and ask the same question, I do this three different times and if the answer is always the same, it’s the best indicator that what you are being told is right.
So many times I have do this and been told three different things each time. I am not saying this is the case for the big companies like Faber Castell, Derwent, Caran d’Ache, Lyra, Koh-I-Noor etc, but certainly for the companies that flood Amazon with a product for a year or so and then you never see them again.
If I can pin point any information about this that I am happy to stand behind, I will absolutely add it to the written review.

@@TheArtGearGuide I contacted the manufacturer directly and asked the questions. They intend to contact the vegan websites with the appropriate information. We have to be careful about not having double standards. It's easy in the West to trust what Western companies say and distrust what companies from China or elsewhere say. The reality is this company has been manufacturing art products for years. Perhaps not as long as Faber Castell but it's not a start-up business. The video of their factory making pencils makes that very clear.
My background is in executive information for use by boards and senior management teams. I'm aware of how to ask questions of companies. Western companies can be guilty of PR spin in the same way as any other global companies.

Thank you so much for the advice and I really appreciate it, but I’ve done this before and the subscribers asked for the longer videos back again. This is why I add a written review with clear subheading so that those who don’t like the long videos can go to the written review and get the information the want instantly. I understand you but sorry for insisting, I still think is possible to edit your videos to under 10min and having the same content. However you would have to shrink your video (cut small sections, use fast forward, transitions, etc) and edit your narrative and revoice over. And that takes HUGE time that probably you don't have. Your content is really good either way and if you say your subscribers like long videos (perhaps because it feels you are having a face to face discussion with them), then keep up the good work and thanks for your videos.
