They actually started working professionally after getting arrested singing outside for disturbing the peace, and then singing for the judge and the Mayor in court, who decided to back them financially. The group grinded it out, traveled north to Philly and New York and finally made it big in the mid-40s when they got a daily slot heading Arthur Godfrey's daily radio show, and other radio shows, including 'Amos & Andy.' ----- That great guitarist is Everette Barksdale and is a member of the group (they also added a pianist from Brooklyn, Smiley Trotman, soon after this video was made). The singers didn't read music and never took a lesson, it was all feel. They rehearsed many hours per day and by the mid-40s knew over 600 songs. They were so popular at this point that the Jubalaires had trouble with their radio bosses, who didn't want to allow them off the air to go off on a big tour. The group won the battle, went anyway and were recording hit after hit record. To keep things together, the whole group and their families lived together in one giant house. They also appeared in the 1950 film "Duchess of Idaho" and are seen in the trailer on RUclips.

I’m proud of our people in this era. 75% legitimacy rate. Single motherhood was rare, black Wall Street was in full swing, people dressed like ladies and gentlemen. Then there came Lyndon B. Johnson and the Democrats. They put the giant hammer of Thor to our community.
This is a very dark song, despite its upbeat tempo. A black man shot a large animal in the woods, turns out this large animal was a white man. He dropped the gun and ran. Brother Bill said what's the matter with you? "If he known like me, he would've run some too." Brother Bill found out what happened, and took a shot at him while he fled. The shot missed, and the black man got away. Running so fast and headed straight to Alabama.
This music has such a vibe.. Reminds me of Fallout game so much, one could be suffering all kind of miseries across the wasteland but with a smile and a light bounce ❤

pretty good editing for 1945. didnt expect that
This is a very dark song, despite its upbeat tempo.
A black man shot a large animal in the woods, turns out this large animal was a white man. He dropped the gun and ran. Brother Bill said what's the matter with you?
"If he known like me, he would've run some too."
Brother Bill found out what happened, and took a shot at him while he fled. The shot missed, and the black man got away. Running so fast and headed straight to Alabama.
It also implies the undertones of sundown towns that were a thing especially in the place the song is talking about which is Maine.
This is straight up fire
This music has such a vibe.. Reminds me of Fallout game so much, one could be suffering all kind of miseries across the wasteland but with a smile and a light bounce ❤
These are the true OG’s
I have the record somewhere in the storage locker it's on the 45, remember the first time I heard this quadraphonic capable rack system, smoked a little too much out the bowl I just grabbed anything to throw it on got really paranoid felt the room started to shrink, this was absolutely amazing when I first heard it and I would like to recommend if you have the original vinyl record? Turn the bass up, that baritone singer is amazing he's got a lot of a lot of rhythm in them this group I can imagine anyone in their 20s hearing this today you guys must get a f****** hell of a kick out of this, I call this I don't call it rap though, emceein.
Perfect tune for a Fallout game.
This is one of my favorite bands ever the jubalaires
this is what hip hop was like back in the 40s. I guess that's why they call it gangsta rap
That transition alone was well ahead of its time
I love this song old or not
A certified hood classic
Thank you for this video and I know you posted this 14 years ago but this is cool I like this I’ve never heard of this group. The person who posted it was Joe Rogan on the Rogan show and they mention these four brothers. Thank you for posting this video. I learned something new today.
It’s unreal music! Thanks for vibes
