Stan & Ollie | Way Out West Dance | Shot by Shot Comparison

- Using bonus footage from the "Stan & Ollie" DVD, I cut together an exact shot by shot comparison with the original "At the Ball, That's All" dance in Way Out West.
I would never mock the guys for trying to redo this dance as it's spot on. But when it comes to a dynamic duo such as Laurel and Hardy, somethings just can not be duplicated
@jonnocotton48, “Stan & Ollie”, which is where the scene on the right came from, is a great movie about events during the end of their careers.
They cast the wrong actors.
The fact that they were able to source the original rear projection footage is fantastic!
As I understand it, the producers thought they would have to put together a rear-projection plate for STAN AND OLLIE. Amazingly, the original footage was located in an archive shortly before post-production work started!
Yeah that was amazing to see
Too bad they half assed timing it and having it properly lined up
A small side note from Germany. In the late 60s the german actor Heinz Rühmann made a movie, in which he was examined by a psychathrist. The doctor asked the actor, a man in his mid- sixties, : You have an obsession to very large things, was there an incident in your youth? Heinz Rühmann said yes,, and you could see a clip, in which he was a bus driver in a movie of his career start.
I didn't realize it till I saw this side by side. Yes, that Was Amazing.
I went to see this at the flicks at Chesterfield and buying my ticket said, "one to see Laurel and Hardy" and I said to the girl, now there's a sentence I never thought I'd hear myself say! A great film, and a loving tribute!
The film made me cry.....it was heartwarming,...funny.....and sad....and it is a fitting monument to the absolute Masters of comedy.....not only geniuses in front of the camera,....but good honest people,...and their special friendship illuminates throughout,...and is so moving and shines so bright....and the love they had for comedy is clearing evident, but their special bond remained forever....
Hear, hear. 😁😁😁😁😁
Poor Stanley after Ollie died he was completely crushed.
You are spot on in the comments you made. I also felt the same about the movie. Couldn't stop crying at the end knowing that they are gone, but will never be forgotten....
Reilly and Coogan were uncannily accurate!
i did enjoy seeing john c reilly portray oliver hardy and steve coogan portray alan partridge dressed as stan laurel
100th like
yes they were, BUT you'll never reach the feeling and impression of the original
They were pretty much off all the way through, what was you watching? Coogan's face didn't match the silly smile of Stan, they were rushing it too. 4/10
@@jaybenton7716 keep in mind this comparison is also mistimed. The right footage starts too early
Nothing can top the original, but these two did a fantastic and faithful redo. 👍
Amazing resemblance, I cannot Express how much is my gratitude to the whole 2019 Stan and Ollie cast for their accurate resurrection of L and H priceless heritage, thank you all geniuses.
I agree. Well said K K. It was a great film.
"Way Out West" has been one of my favorite movies since the 1970's, and this scene is my absolute favorite probably from any other their movies! Saw "Stan & Ollie" when it came out and thought it was great. This dance scene is amazing on how well the redo was so accurate to the original!
Stan and Ollie is an awesome movie. The acting and casting was great and I wish more flicks like this were being made.
It’s a loving tribute. The guys did an impressive job.
Zazu Zazz, indeed Coogan and Reilly did an excellent job. I don't see anyone else who would do them justice like they did.
Laurel and hardy are in with the beat where the other actors are a little quick
Agreed. They both did an amazing job
@@almorgan68 dont forget stan and ollie perfected it and worked hard, dont nit pick on when the actors try recreate and male such an impressive attempt
@zazuzazz5419, I’m sorry that this is long. Two years ago I failed to mention that the “fat suit”, which John C. Reilly wore, was weighted so when he moved and dance his movements and dancing were like Hardy’s. R.I.P., Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. You “‘boys’” laid the foundation for the funny man and the straight (serious) man which has been followed by Abbott and Costello, Andy Griffith (‘Sheriff Taylor’) and Don Knotts (‘Deputy Barney Fife’ of “The Andy Griffith Show”), and Matt LeBlanc (‘Joey Tribbiani’ of “Friends”) and Matt Perry (‘Chandler Bing’ of “Friends”).
I thought the actors did an excellent job portraying Laurel and Hardy on and offscreen. Especially their close relationship offscreen.
Omg!.. it took this remake to make me appreciate just hw talented Laurel and Hardy really were..if Coogan and Reilly was a dance then the original was pure ballet
They were brilliant and very talented guys. I used to love watching Laurel and Hardy with both my grandad's as a kid in fact when they used to put their films on at Christmas I would sit in my pyjamas all day watching them lol
First thing that strikes you seeing them side by side is how graceful Stan Laurel is and how naturally funny Hardy is. Even today they are instantly loveable. They did a good job with the new film but you can’t replicate that.
@@johnmangham2802 they weren’t trying to “replicate”. They were honoring by showing how great L&H were.
When I saw the movie I was the only soul in the cinema! Had the whole screen to myself.
This fantastic movie didn't get enough credits and love by far!
Not sure what you're talking about. It received 17 nominations for various awards, including three British Academy Film Award nominations, including Best British Film and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor (Reilly). Film critics loved it. It received 92% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. It cost $10 million to make and earned triple that amount at the box office.
@@posysdogovych2065 movie went unnoticed
their dancing was magic--when trying to leave the foreign legion they pass these guys playing shine on harvest moon and break into a dance routine--it's divine, a minute of just pure joy.
Join the foreign legion...to forget! I loved the flying deuces. Climbing the hellish laundry pile. I'm laughing thinking about it.
Did you notice too everybody that joined the French foreign Legion had joined because they had a broken heart ........and it was the same lady in everyone's photo.....😂
This movie got slept on and I’m still salty about it
Its not really a unique movie in and of itself. The "effects" are amazing, having them look and act like the real Stan and Ollie. But the movie itself is just a plain cliché drama. That is why I was disappointed when I saw it. They actually managed to recreate Stan and Ollie, but then only squeezed them into a lame TV movie script. Too bad.
@@laurencewhite4809 "Stan"
Wait, it's already out?
@@spiderpig9777 Exactly
Its more of a documentary though!
I got emotional watching the dance simply fantastic
Fascinating. I head years ago from some old producer or other that Stan was not always comfortable with the camera in the same way as Oliver. I don't know if that is true, but one of the differences I notice between him and Steve Coogan is that Coogan looks at the camera a lot more, and that changes his performance a little. Laural is often watching the ground in his detached way. Both are wonderful performances in their own right. Matching them up would always be very hard because the mechanics in the old days weren't that reliable and film speeds wandered a little! So well done.
Those guys were really good.
L n H were better, just lighter on their feet.
Good job all around.
stan and ollie best comedy duo ever nobody will ever ever surpass them EVER they were amazing and still are on film, thank god we still have them on film.
Best ever? Have you never seen Hale & Pace? 🙄
@@foleywallace459oh shut up! 🤡
@@foleywallace459 Oh God, did you have to mention those 2? Simply awful!
If this is an exact match, then it's obvious the original L&H had a much better feel of the music than the actors portraying them did. Those actors are anticipating the next beat, whereas L&H were waiting for that beat to react to it. Just a minor point of course! But proves further the genius of L&H over modern performers. ❤️
You are correct, but they did an amazing job all the same.
I own Stan and Ollie movie and I watch it over and over again it was so well done I love it
It's perfection. Why were these two particularly Coogan not nominated for an Oscar
I was AMAZED at how well the two managed to capture the vibes of the original Laurel and Hardy so closely. I can't look at Coogan without seeing Stan Laurel now!
Laurel and Hardy are my favourite (to say the least) comedians i've ever seen all my life. I remember as a kid i was under a spell every time i heard the iconic music intro. I am still whistle this tune, and its been my ringtone for ages. When i saw this movie it was an instant time machine that brought me back to my childhood again. But the very best part of it. Its not a shame to say that i've cried 2-3 times when watching it, especially at the end. Both of them were something like fatherly figures for me as a child, i still think of them as my uncles or granfathers. I believe that many -if not all- of you feel the same. I want to congratulate every single one who's involved in this wonderful movie about the two most loveable, descent and funny comedians ever lived in the face of this planet. I am literally on tears right now watching this again.. Brilliant!
One of the greatest scenes in motion picture history
Thank you for the tribute to Stan and Ollie and please don't be offended when I say the original was immensely more elegant performed by artists that were grandmasters of their trade made even more amazing because they were perfect partners that were like one soul in two bodies.
I thought the same thing - the modern actors were very good, but the originals blew them out of the water.
A most memorable performance by Steve Coogan & John C. Reilly in the 2019 movie, Stan & Ollie.
One of the most charming scenes ever captured on film
Best comedy team, ever.
Wonderful.....I grew up watching L and H, as my dad was (and still is a massive fan).
Beautiful, .The only glaring omission is not mimicking Stan Laurel's facial expression, which was such an important part of his delivery. But otherwise just amazing!
I’m a BIG L & H fan so I could get VERY technical and dissect both clips. However, I’m not gonna do that. The biopic version was excellent! U can’t do it EXACTLY like the real ones. That’s impossible! One thing i do notice in the original clip is the love and respect u see between Stan and Ollie. It’s funny, but also sweet to see them dancing 2gether like that. It’s a sense of kinship that no other comedy team had.
It's a shame that the real parts of the old team aren't even considerd to be showen.... that was the real magic behind it all (and I was too yound when the films got out but still love it, so does my boy at 7 years old)
They really did have a great relationship, unlike many other comedy teams. They cared about each other and after Oliver died Stan refused to make any more movies because he couldn't work with anyone else.
Trish Byrne it’s funny, i thought Abbott and Costello weren’t as tight. Their families said that’s not true that Bud and Lou were close and cared bout each other. I always thought it was the opposite. Martin and Lewis I’m not sure bout. Ha. Jerry Lewis always exaggerated how tight they really were so we’ll never really know. Dean Martin always said “there was nothing deep goin on, we were just 2 guys f***ing around” ha.
i dunno, man. i mean the stooges were (mostly) brothers, that's actual kinship, not just a sense.
Awesome tribute, but the originals make it look joyful and effortless by comparison.
Reilly and Coogan were good, but the real Laurel & Hardy were that much better.
I’m just gonna say you’re never gonna be able to beat the original....the sense of friendship that Stan and Ollie had is what makes this performance complete. The version from the Stan and Ollie movie certainly did a good job trying to recreate this and the fact that it looks so similar is astounding. But there’s so much more joy and Mirth in the original and you can just tell from their body language and even smaller movements, the new one is so much more stiff. The fact that Stan and Ollie were best friends certainly shows in this performance. Reilly and Coogan did an excellent job trying to reenact this and I’m gonna stand by that, but that’s the thing is that it’s only ACTING, what Stan and Ollie had was more then that❤️
Matthew Shrubsole perfectly said👌 Stan and Ollie is a great movie and it certainly portrays what the actors were like for all those who don’t know (which was the point...for a comeback for laurel and hardy:) We can’t expect the producers or actors to be able to reproduce the exact same product cause that would be nonsense....but I’m not going to sit and nit pick at everything they did wrong when I could be praising them for what they did right :) and I totally agree with you on this
Matthew Shrubsole absolutely :) you put it beautifully....I love talking about this sort of stuff with people who appreciate it. Everyone says the world lost these two when they died, but in reality their legacy won’t ever be forgotten. They’ll always be remembered in their films and stories. In a sense, they never truly took that final bow because they’re still active today making people laugh during hard times. Maybe not physically but always in a sense. We’re never really going to get another laurel and hardy but I guess that’s what makes them special.
Matthew Shrubsole that’s what I mean...we won’t ever get them back physically but we’ll always remember them through their films and stories :) they still make me and many others laugh today...the fact that they’re remembered so long is astounding on so many levels...they really changed the world of comedy and entertainment..
Its just a short scene in a bio movie- geez🙄

I really enjoyed this film, I thought the performances of Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly were outstanding. I´m a little too young to really remember Laurel and Hardy, but I am, obviously familiar with their work and their legend. I found it to be a thoroughly believable portrayal of the real-life duo, and I must add that it really opened my eyes to how good an actor John C. Reilly is. Nice to see footage of the original, thanks for the upload
You'd have to be at least ninety to remember them
It's a great performance from both Coogan and Reilly, but I can't help noticing that the original has a looseness to it that they weren't able to replicate.
Although it was still a stellar performance from both.
I saw an old video of this is your life, featuring Laurel and Hardy. Every time the announcer would bring on someone that knew or a family member of either one the other would stand up and also smile and greet them just like family. I could tell how close they were just like family. This was the first time I had seen anything about their personal lives. This made me like them even more than before and I already thought they were fantastic. Still a big fan after all these years.
People forget the skill of being simple and they did that so well enough to make me cry at times
they were the best in their class. we won't make them like that anymore. well that's my personal opinion. Stan Oliver rest in peace for eternity ♥ ️😢
Amazing! Stan and Ollie and Way Out West are both great movies.
Odd that they were unable to match the lighting.
Glad someone said it
@@AceLM92 the original two seem to have much stronger lighting on them
@@opinionday0079 well that's how they were photographed in black and white back then
What an odd complaint to make. I find it absurd that you would take the time to make a trivial, nonsensical comment such as this.
@@AceLM92 What the hell? You mean the lighting not matching was bothering you? Fuck what a stupid thing to be concerned with..
Stan Laurel was one of the greatest talents of his day. Didn't even have to say a word, just a look, and you were already laughing.
I saw the film and Reilly and Coogan were nothing less than amazing in their multi-layered performances of the original comedy duo. My mother preferred them to Abbott and Costello, whom she considered cheap slapstick.
I liked some of Abbott and Costello, like the who s on first which is a classic, but yes they were a rip off of L&H. But Stan and Babe, by far was the best comedy act of he last century.
They are amazing but the director is like shit. Why cut out the original scenes and replace them? I only watched the western dance and was like "that can't be taken serious", the actors are great but a bit out of timing
My dad's friend is a huge Laurel and Hardy fan and he absolutely hates Abbott and Costello with a passion. I haven't seen many Abbott and Costello movies but from what I've seen I quite like them but I much prefer Laurel and Hardy, The Three Stooges, The Marx Brothers and The Little Rascals. I found Abbott and Costello's version of Jack and the Beanstalk boring but I quite enjoyed Africa Screams, Abbott and Costello meet the Mummy and what I've seen of The Abbott and Costello Show.
I like Laurel and Hardy movies better than the Abbott and Costello films.
I grew up watching them, because my father is a massive fan. I watched the movie, they did a phenomenal job. When this scene in the movie came on, I couldn’t help but get choked up. I flashed back about 40 years watching it with my father, loved this scene as a kid.
Do we all agree - THE Stan and Ollie - did it better?
I totally agree with you
blueboyblue yes, but both showed innocent joy
They did seem to rush it in the remake
I think both were very good, but nothing beats the original.
Obviously, but it wasn’t made to be a competition, it was made to be more of a commemoration
This was so beautiful that it made me cry ,in fact especially the last dance scene on stage
I used to watch Stan and Ollie with my late father, this just brings back so many lovely memories, laughing out loud with my Dad.
This movie is brilliant.
Stan & Oliver would be very proud
Making my day. Thank you.
Definitely looks rehearsed in the new one. Stan and ollie look like they almost came up with it on the spot
Good way to put it, fully agree.
Terrific.
Can't beat the original, but they still did a good job
Absolutely LOVED the movie. It was made with real heart by talented people who really cared about the subject. But love the originals.
They nailed this
Has anyone noticed that the guy doing the yodeling in the original one is (Chill Wills) the actor.. He was part of the group called the avalon boys quartet
It's good yes but..
No-one can beat the originals!
This is not a remake this is a true story of what happened it's a tribute to the actual Laurel and Hardy it's like a documentary so as not to be a John and Steve did awesome job portraying as Laurel and Hardy so everybody needs to quit being butthurt
Wonderful tribute. Great movie. Extraordinary performances.
I was so close to these guys when I was a little child that I thought of them as MY friends, almost like a personal possession, as was my long gone teddy bear. Now very much older, what does one do with a possession that can provide the joy born of innocent laughter? Share it with the world, of course. And what better way than with digitalization, HD and colorization?
Thank you so very much for doing this, whoever you are, all of you. You have brought light to my life and joy to my heart.
Sincerely,
A. Geezer
Just to be clear. This is not digitalization and color restoration. This is a side by side comparisson between the original and the movie made about them in 2018. In case you didn't know, you should watch it. It's a good homage to your chilhood treasures. Have a good day.
@@LordSesshaku Thank you. I need to see that. Looking back, L&H did a lot in the 1930s. I was born in the ‘40s and watching them on TV in the early ‘50s. What is historical now was the source of innocent heartfelt laughter then.
@@rascal0175 The movie is called
Stan & Ollie, the title itself tells you the kind of movie it is, making a clever reference to "Laurel (Stan) and Hardy (Ollie)".
It's a really powerful drama about two old friends saying goodbye to each other and their love to performing. I found it really memorable, specially the ending. It's kind of sad, but not in a bad way, more in a melancholy way, like "it's sad because it ended, but I had so much fun while it lasted", because such is life unfortunately.
When you look at the finer details Stan and Ollie were much better and funnier
Oddjob6120 …and breathe. You feel better buddy
Wonderful.
They created the characters perfectly size weight height features. Dancing and acting style. Amazing. These two should make a new laurel and Hardy series
John C. Reilly is far better at dramatic acting than he is at comedy.
I love the film "Stan and Ollie". :)
Amazing
Great accuracy and a lovely film, but the comedy here is in the timing and L& H win every time. ❤️❤️❤️
When I went to see this I was the youngest person in the theatre by about 40 years.
In other words most of the other patrons there were elderly people.
That would be really hard to nail in absolute recreation.
It is a lovingly done, brilliantly executed, faithful copy of genius. If it was exactly the same it would have been wrong.
I love their little dance scene.
A beautiful film, I really loved it and the opportunity to learn more about these men I used to watch as a child.
I read a lot of comments here about people feeling that Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly can't replace Laurel and Hardy and honestly, I don't think that's the intention. It's meant to be a tribute to these two greats.
I think you miss the point.
And I don't think people are saying that.
I for one am greatful these two lesser comedians took a shot at it and even match Stan and Ollie move for move.
Here is what I am saying. It's not funny!
They spent so much time copying this classic bit of comedy history they forgot to make it funny.
So your critique of my reaction is not valid but thanks for tryin.
@@gopherstate777 My comment literaly means the same, just differently worded. Plus I still need to finish the movie to get a better grasp of the story they're trying to tell.
That is truly a fine testament to the talent America once had. Today's films suck...no imagination...no realism...too much cig. Give a Bogart or a Lee Marvin over Brad Pitt or Matt Damon any day.
They need to loosen up a little bit. It seems obvious they were trying to mimick a choreographed dance rather than be in the moment. It could be because the actors are older than Laurel & Hardy were when this orignally filmed? The reason this stands out so much is because they're *so* close to nailing it; little bit of a back handed compliment I know. They're like 95% of the way there and its for sure the best we have! It's brilliant, I was just happy to see the tribute:)
I never thought that they wud be recreating actual performances when i watched it, it never occurred to me lol ffs.. Well coogan is a comedy genius so i expect they both wanted to pay homage to the legendary duo.
Good job but orginal looks they were naturally dancing with ease. Remake trying too hard to match orginal so it didn't seem natural.
Wonderful film, Stan and Ollie would of approved
I think you nailed it. The original was more free and they could improvise with the timing, the re-creation was timed, produced, and flowed very well. It must have been insanely difficult to do, and I'm sure the boys would have approved of the professionalism and the amount of work, not to mention the hundred years on ...
Love the movie tribute but you can clearly see that the real Laurel and Hardy were so much more smooth and natural as if they were one mind, body and soul. They can communicate as one.
This was a really good movie.
Reilly is really quite the dancer.....watch "Mr. Cellophane" from CHICAGO and the disco scene from BOOGIE NIGHTS
The modern version was just a bit ahead of the original but nicely done. Still doesn't make me want to see the film though I'm afraid. There was only one Stan and Ollie
John Riley and Steve Coogan were just incredible in this.
After seeing Steve & John's performance I think
The real stan and ollie are looking down with
