Crabbok, I'm feeling opposite to you - I want the generic troops; I want to make them my own characters. If this also evolves into having a campaign and upgraded troops, that'd be icing on the cake. Kill team is a very popular game, and having an additional way to play is a great thing. I have seen countless people that don't want anything to do with Shatterpoint because It's a different scale to Legion. This seems to be a great fit for them - you can use your legion minis AND play a smaller scale game.
This is a great point. I know that people are going to be divided on this... and it is absolutely cool to have multiple ways to play - I just worry about the future. Will this take time away from the core game?
Same. Heroes are fun, but I like making my own heroes and my.own stories.

You could always play Stargrave with your Legion minis
@@Crabbok did kill team take away from the core of 40k? If anything it brought more people into the main game when it first came out.
I'm super excited for this imagine playing this game mode as a bad batch, or the rescue team in the death star. This is such a great idea.
Oh this is a sweet idea.... I love the idea of the Bad Batch!
I'm genuinely so excited to try this out! I think fleshing out the smaller scale fights with the nameless units adds a lot more intensity, and will make it feel a lot more like a shoot out you'd see in clone wars or Rebels TV show!
Pretty stoked! I have loved the new smaller scale that a lot of games are going towards. Great entry level ways to play for new players.
As someone who loves grunts and does not run heroes at all in his army, I cannot wait for this to come out!
Well played AMG!.. I think this is what I've been wanting all along! Though I would prefer more room to build your own squad, but as this is a beta it may not be the final option.
A surprise for sure, but a welcome one! Aside from the self competition with shatterpoint, this is a great move. I have had zero interest in playing 40k but I'm always considering jumping into kill teams, so it wouldnt surprise me if there are people thinking the same when it comes to Legion. And growing legion is always good.
I’ve kind of held off on buying into Legion. This had me at the game store today looking at boxes thinking how I could build and customize a rebel team out of a box of Commandos, a box of Pathfinders, and a box of Wookiees.
Now, give me a way to build a bounty hunter team with a generic human, generic assassin droid, generic Gand findsman, generic Trandoshan, generic Duros gunslinger, and generic Wookiee, and you’ll see me come busting through the wall of the game store like the Kool-Aid man to throw my money at the cash register. No time to waste on opening doors in a situation like that.
This is the most exciting Legion news I’ve heard in a long time. Definitely looking forward to this!
Curious why they made shatter point. Easier entry point for new folks?
It was already being made by ffg before the acquisition of Star Wars legion
Shatter point is more heroes based. So its more like marvel crisis
Love the attack for the medical droid - 'aggressive beeping' 😂
Look forward to trying this out. I like new ways to use my existing minis. Especially interested if these games are quicker to play than standard game for those days when I'm pressed on time.
This is what I was hoping Shatterpoint would be -- Legion scale, use Legion minis, small squads, and then add a bit of campaign element to build your squad over time. It is a true skirmish game, not the Legion skirmish mode which is just the army game with fewer units. Should use a 2x2 board IMO.
I hope once the full rules are finished we can run our own teams. I understand for a beta why it would be prebuilt.
I'm thinking the same. They want play tested, not team building (right now).
I think this looks like fun. It is also much closer to what I was hoping for the Skirmish mode was originally talked about, and not basically a smaller points game. but the timing of this does seem like a direct response to criticism AMG got with the announcement of Shatterpoint and everyone wanted to use Legion minis. It is a change of pace mode, I think. Maybe something to break out when you only have an hour. Shatterpoint will be their Heroes focused game.
I'm so hyped! I've wanted this format since I first joined the Legion family. It's definitely different, but I feel like the rules had to change a decent bit to make a format like this work correctly. I'm not upset about it. I feel like comparing it directly to Core Legion is a bit of a disservice to the format. I don't mind the quick build format, but I think it would be fun to have some customization to your squads if you wanted it. I'm absolutely going to build a Mandalorian squad, and proxy them because...it's cool. :)
In the end, I definitely acknowledge that there are people whe enjoy a different style of game. I'm a big fan of Killteam, and this style makes my day. I hope that AMG continues to expand upon this format, because I'm definitely going to be playing the crap out of it.
"Treat yo' self." Nice to know you're a Parks and Rec fan.
Should be a fun option!
Using a “ generic “ commander would be neat.
A kit to create your own hero would be awesome!
I'm more excited for this than Shatterpoint. The only different scale I would want for Star Wars would be a 6mm or 10mm grand army game.
This seems like a way to give legion players a shatterpoint experience without having to invest in new game components. It may allow some players to change their mind on shatterpoint or just give a small game experience for when you don't have enough time. Also with the popularity of kill team, amg can test the waters to see if there is any interest before creating another game line.
Personally really stoked. Kill Team’s a real popular game for GW, I’m not surprised AMG wanted to capitalize on that success. And to your point about generic dudes, this is your opportunity to make your own heroes out of these random mooks. This is pure “your dudes” energy.
Honestly I was not interested in playing such a small scale, but after going through it all I'm really excited to try this with my legion buddy just to shake things up a bit every now and then.
I do like watching the clones being independent fighting droids that's what I love about it so this is kinda right up my alley
Cool thing about this is it makes me Want to buy some clones units and build a clone strike team. Great marketing strategy
Interested in trying this new mode, much more than in Shatterpoint (hate the art style and really don’t want to invest in that).
I’ve been looking for a way to play a shorter game of Legion so this could be it.
Will miss the vehicules though…
I had no idea you disliked this format until you shared your opinion within the last couple of minutes. It's cool that you were mostly positive and upbeat while sharing during most of the video. As far as this format goes, it sounds fun to me. More so with hero characters tho. I believe shatterpoint will be more enjoyable than this, but it does give me a reason to grab some legion to try this out without having to comit to all the vehicles. I prefer the 3x3 setting anyway.
I get that you want the already established cannon characters in game. But this version allows you to create your own named characters and create your own lore for them as you play.
If you wanted to create your own storm trooper, or name them, or basically establish your own law, you could always do that with Star Wars Legion. I would argue that this does not actually advance that aspect in anyway beyond what the game already had.
@@Crabbok I can see where your coming from, I guess for me the older I get the more I’d like to play shorter/faster games.
I'm actually really excited for this format - a chance to play all those Star Wars stories that never made it to the movies, shows or comics. I think of these as the covert actions with the personnel you'll never know because the Empire and Rebels want those identities secret.
I suppose there’s no reason you can’t name your troops individually.
The SWL community just dumbfound me sometimes - AMG announce Shatterpoint and they all get up in arms because they can't use the existing minis in a low model count skirmish game. Then AMG announce that they have a (free) low model count skirmish game that uses existing minis and the community starts whining that they don't want to play a different game with them... This is why we can't have nice things, kids...
I myself am pretty excited for this because the one thing that the game has been missing is a low cost entry point to get people into the mainline game (Skirmish mode really doesn't count, because there are WAY too many units on the field for a skirmish mode at 500 points). It's clearly targeted as a 'Kill Team' or 'WarCry' scale entry that acquaints you with the main rulebook without necessarily using all of it and at only 4 rounds it's designed for very quick games at the 60 minute mark.
Personally, I'd like to have seen them go with 'per-model' list building so that you could work some named characters into it, but it's early days yet, so who knows...
This is exactly what I wanted Shatterpoint to be. I have MCP, I don't need it reskinned with SW and I don't want yet ANOTHER proprietary scale when literally everything else I own and play is 28mm. So having this for a scale that already works with my terrain and SWL minis is awesome. I won't be buying anything for Shatterpoint now.
It’s almost Middle Earth Strategy Game : battle companies without having to pay $60 bucks for a book.
As someone just getting into Legion this is fantastic news ⭐️ - a really great post - thanks 👍
My interpretation is that:
Legion - massed battle at company level driven, GW 40K
This rule set - squad level strike forces driven, GW kill team
Shatter point - character and retinue/advisors driven, GW inquisitor for those with long memories and that was a different scale to the "regular" miniatures.
Maybe this is a AMG reaction to the fanbase reaction to the different figure scale in shatterpoint but hey we have a new developing rule set and way to play out of it.
Once they iron out the beta rules hopefully AMG will develop the rule set to allow narrative campaign development for squad members. Which would be good.
Aggressive Beeping attack on that medical droid is my new favorite attack.
Just bought a printer and ran out the color ink and most of the black ink printing out cards for my homebrew games; going to have to grab new cartridges next month and get these SO cards all sleeved up! Thanks, Crabbok!
I've been trying to get a ton of my friends into this game and I feel like...this is the way :)
I see what you did there 😉
Pretty exciting new format for Legion. I'm a fan of just about anything that gives me an opportunity/incentive to put my Legion stuff on the table. This will ultimately develop into the basis for a more robust small unit tactical game as it fleshes out, I hope.
🤣🤣🤣 your Arny voice is amazing, never had someone bridge to french from it before 😅🤣
Thanks! 😃
Pretty stoked to try out this new mode of play with my boys. I think we'll love it!!
This is pretty interesting, glad to see content still coming out for legion as shatterpoint approaches
Moving from "range x" to inches seems like a step back to me? Much easier to remember the smaller numbers! I guess it allows ranges to be more granular (1", 2", 3", 15" etc)
It had advantages, one big thing is it allows you to modify ranges much easier, maybe mudy terrain or shallow water slows down troopers walking through it, while a hill running down could increase it, then other forms of modifications like special upgrades for this gamemode if they intend for it to be more then just an intro, which honestly could be a decent boxset to collect up a squad of each faction and seeing what you like
This is gonna be insane for people playing campaigns
I think the reason that there is no list building or unique troops/heroes is that this is a beta. Doing it this way with the pre-made squads results in a more controlled beta and may have clearer results. I’m excited by this.
They likely won't drop the pre-loadout because it's easier to keep balance between squads.
I hope we’ll finally get some Clone Commandos as this is perfect for them!
I feel the premade squads is kinda limiting but bet that’s probably just to make the Beta easier to handle. Once it’s out of Beta hopefully we can build our own squads.
I think you missed that Panic only causes you to roll dice to see if you take extra damage. Still hurts but it's not automatic.
The move to inches and the Move + Dash tweaks are clearly designed to make Legion better suit a 3x3 table, we all know skirmish games with any type of melee units typically have a big advantage, so I'm interested to try it out
I'm so excited for this! it will be much easier to bring in new players.
I like it! Sounds interesting, gonna give it a try when I don’t have enough time to complete a standard game
Free game! It's all good. Printed and ready for a blast at the weekend🤞🏻😃...
Indeed
I'm looking forward to trying this out. I like the idea of a smaller shorter game, but I don't wanna sell all my Legion stuff for Shatterpoint.
You do realise that your aloud both? 😂😂
@@ff56hs My budget doesn't allow both...
With Shatterpoint coming this is nice to see.
This in 15mm could be fun.
Well, as an Infinity player coming to Star Wars Legion, I’ll be trying this out.
Edit: I’m confused - you just spent all this time reviewing a game you’re not interested in?? Wtf?
See I’m thinking shadow points gonna be a lot like Marvel crisis protocol but obviously a Star Wars version this is more like Warhammer strike team which is something I’ve been interested in getting into I’ll be playing tonight
They have different unit type symbols for token draw purposes.
Very interesting ruleset. I only have a Clone Wars Starter Box, so I'll be doing a lot of proxying lol. Nice Arnold btw, AHWAHWAHAHWAH!
Hey @crabbok, did you ever do a series of video about how to collect these forces in the most cost effective way, i.e. just buy a starter set and that will get you the GAR force?
Special Operations seems really cool! I wonder if some of the smaller heroes, like Rex or Iden, will eventually be added. Adding a Force user is probably too much for the mode, but someone like Rex could easily fit in I think.
And if not, you can always proxy them to be squad leader
Rebel commandos = Han and Chewie on Endor. Can’t wait.
Looking forward to seeing how they do this. Thanks for the content.
Excited for any new support, new game modes and overall ways to bring more people into the hobby, we'll be trying it out
Honestly I love the nameless troops angle. I used to never play as heroes in the OG star wars battlefront, I really loved the idea of being a normal soldier caught up in this gigantic conflict. I am confused though, why they have both this and shatterpoint. But depending on how it plays, I might prefer this.
This also is just the beta when I refine it you’ll find the troops will probably have names or at least a few will I think
I play Legion and I'm excited for something different. I like the idea of having individual troops and using a measuring tape like MESBG. I will probably play this on my kitchen table with my kids. But also to Crabbok's point is that my kids probably won't want to play this if there is no Darth Vader or ATSTs.
Meh, not about new game modes. Rather they put some effort into Armada. On the plus side Legion has plenty in the queue so it’s not getting stale anytime soon.
To your point about this competing with Shattetpoint, perhaps that is the point. With completely different models and terrain, Shatterpoint is going to have a hard buy in for established Legion players. This allows them to play that same type of game with the legion models they already have. It could also be a PR thing. When AMG announced Shatterpoint, people thought the sky was falling. By putting out something like this, AMG is establishing confidence in both games.
To your point about there being no list building, I suspect that this is only for this playtest phase. This to me looks like a roleplaying game quickstart. Those are canned adventures with premade characters, rather than full rules. The permade armies here look like they are premade so players can get testing, while full rules will come later.
Once this is in a good place, there's so much potential for it and legion. Imagine having a bad batch box with cards for spec ops and legion. Here's hoping!
🎉😮 Good news! I like hearing new info because it leads me to believe I didn’t waste money on a game that will lose support soon! 10 more years of SW: Legion! 😁
I totally agree with you but i am still happy that you can review a rotten banana that well!
This seems pretty cool. Hope Gar gets boosted in Legion overall, the meta is so focused on the mercs my little group doesn't allow them anymore unless both bring them.
All of the squads have their heavy weapons unit classified as a Heavy.
Good idea, I like the updated cards and their abilities. Especially the Wookie with a red defense dice. The dice per gun seems better to, hopefully this becomes broader.
Apparently we value different things in these games. I hate that you're almost forced to take named characters in every star wars game. I'm tired of being Luke and Vader. I primarily run generic commanders in legion and ships in Armada and X Wing for this reason. I wish amg would just give me a generic Jedi, even for GAR, and I'll be happy.
Yeah it seems very bizarre to me, like pushing shatterpoint as their new thing but ohh wait here's a game mode for legion that lets you play a similar scale battle? Surely that just puts in in conflict with shatterpoint for players?
This looks great. I hope they eventually add campaign / list growing capabilities / equipment upgrades and thematic missions etc.
I hope that they also release printed support for this mode, cards / mission boxes etc.
Playing a game today ! Rebel troops vs arc troops, very excited 🔥🔥🔥
This is very intriguing. I'm printing cards now to try this out, especially until Shatterpoint comes out.
I am so excited. I feel this format would help introduce new folks!
I feel like this is intended to help bridge the gap between legion and shatter point for people who haven't played MCP. I would have much preferred that they had reworked skirmish: no named characters, preset squads, even preset armies. All of that would be good you can help new players understand what upgrades are useful, what a faction identity is without them having to learn all of etc. I am not likely to play this variant of the game
You missed the droid attack is Aggressive Beeping with suppressive 1
Thanks for the info! It does sound like something I will enjoy but I can see why someone into Jedi and vehicles wouldn't be excited
Yes! It's about time...
I've played this format a little now and I must say that I find it very enjoyable. I have limited space so I can't play full sized games and I found the skirmish format a bit stale and list building is limited. The new missions are cool too. You can use your hero models if you like in place of the troops but obviously without their abilities. The rules are easy to grasp and picking loadouts after choosing the mission is like preparing your squad after gathering Intel instead of just guessing what you might need to take and hoping. I also like the new ranges in inches and not being able to move as far as it feels like a bigger game on the smaller board. I might also try a crossover with normal skirmish rules and squads but using the only 1 move/dash rule and the altered weapon ranges.
I too want to see more for Armada, and I honestly haven't played a game of Legion in over 2 years. This won't change that at all, looking to get Shatterpoint instead. But I'm also excited because no one I play with want's to play Legion, but they play MCP and are willing to try SP.
This looks very promising! Exited for smaller gameplay while keeping it Legion!
Love your videos, keeps me in the know w legion stuff.
Hey Crabbok thanks for these videos they have helped me alot. I have been wanting to try Legion for a while now and finally got my first core set last month. I am worried I joined at a strange time but still I am excited to finally play my first game.
Nice! My first core set arrived yesterday, great timing!
I'm looking forward to trying this out!
super excited about this! Cant wait to play it!
I was looking to get into miniature games and o prefer the smaller style games cause I dont have friends that would be willing to buy stuff but I could get them to play it. Should I just buy legion and play this or get shatterpoint? I'm conflicted
I love this idea, all squads become Inferno Squads, A lot of dice but am SO looking forward to this, and I might use my Legos, (The Holiday Special Star wars Stuff) Can't wait, Legions not dying any time soon from this ruleset (Shatterpoint)
Maybe not exactly inferno, just because we can't name them and excetera, But would be cool, is having a D&D kinda thing where we can improve their character stats, and as disappointing as it is to not have Armada and X wing, my theory is that AMG is building something big for those to and we just aren't aware of these projects,
Kinda fun to watch the whiplash of shatterpoint and special operations!
Please use the terminator voice EVERY VIDEO lol
I'm excited for this new game mode.
They should have just taken inspiration from the guys who made their own homebrew beforehand, Striketeam… it only changed Army building.
This is going to make playing with friend on an Evening easier
Not a player of Legion. However, with AMG releasing rules for a variant of Legion, while releasing Shatterpoint, seems like creating competition against themselves
If a lower model count is needed for this varient of Legion, I might consider it. However, not interested in Shatterpoint. Any legion player in the local community is on the fence about shatterpoint, more to the No than Yes.
I hope you try this out, I’d be interested to see it played and hear your thoughts on it after trying it
hit the nail on the head for me, no jedi nor vehicles. thats a major drawback altogether. star wars without jedi is like a swimming pool without water.
positives -
1) really interesting idea for a smaller version of legion to take less than 3hours for an 800pt game.
2) some great keywords and interactions that can be applied to the bigger more standard games; "aggressive beeping" as an attack for the medical droid made me lol
3) at least they are not letting legion just go bland
negatives -
1) it is 196 pages to print this off, all the documents, if you dont have a double sided printing printer
2) the spelling mistakes throughout are, i guess, standard AMG at this stage; suppression spelled supression and suppression in the same paragraph. theres more examples also; bodyguard is bodygaurd, the is te in places; minimal professional effort should have correct spelling
3) pushing the CRB and then this indicates we are going to see hardly any new minis this year for legion. Cody, Waxer, Boil, Assajj, Ashoka, Gideon and Dark Troopers. That will be it. Production lines completely taken up by Shatterpoint.
4) having this as a community playtest indicates they dont have the capacity in-house to manage legion anymore
5) using a measuring tape is a vast change from using a range ruler which is legions' standard. that could have been kept the same if even using the speed rulers as well
6) they could fix the CRB and updated things first and have things like cover for atst examples and other cover problems, scale also and not have some things not completely useless anymore. e.g. scale free climb if in base contact with a piece of obstacle terrain. they are making more problems than they can fix at the present time which goes back to point 4)
7) would be nice if skirmish wasnt left for dead and had some new battledeck options in addition to the existing 4 options per category
Looks good! I like the idea of smaller engagements!
Looks pretty cool. Seems to compete with Shatterpoint though, right?
