What's the Difference Between РАЗ and ОДИН in Russian Language My name is Fedor and today you will learn the difference between ОДИН {adin} and РАЗ { ras}. You probably know that in Russian one is “ oдин “{ adin }. So one two three should be : Один{1} Odin Два {2} dva Три {3} tri That's correct but sometimes you will see also somehow Рaз{ ras} has replaced Один{1} in this sequence of numbers. So Рaз{ ras},Два{dwa-2}, Три {tri-3}, also means one two three. So what's the difference between the two ? Today you will learn just that, but before we start guys join our “ Be fluent” class if you want to learn Russian in a more guided and structured way . If you love these videos{ you tube videos } you will love “Be fluent” class. What we have on the platform is a whole bunch of courses ; the main one being the grammar course of Russian step by step , starts from the very easy stuff all the way to cases and all the way to more advanced kind of topics . And we have recently added Russian content which is Russian movies and shows that you can watch and learn from. Watch what Russians watch and learn from that. I promise you will love it and you will learn a whole bunch from that. Join us with the first link in the description. Back to Один{adin-1} VS Рaз{ ras}. Один{adin-1} is used whenever we talk about quantity of things. For example you can say -I have one question У меня есть один вопрос. U menya yest' odin vopros. So Один{adin-1} in this case is quantifying how many questions you Have. Один{adin-1} Рaз{ ras}. Another sentence can be : -I had one table. У меня был один стол. U menya byl odin stol. So again you are quantifying things that you had . So Один{adin-1} is used for that. Рaз{ ras} on the other hand is also “one”, but when we count things or count things out. Imagine if you have a whole bunch of books on the table and you want to count how many books you have. So in Russian you can say Один{ adin-1} Один{1}adin, Два {2}dva ,Три {3} etc, or you can say: Рaз{ ras},Два{dwa-2}, Три {tri-3}etc.. So Рaз{ ras}is used whenever you count things whenever you see a whole bunch of things and you count them out. Рaз{ ras},Два{dwa-2}, Три {tri-3} So Рaз{ ras } is used for counting. The logic of it is kind of ,you know, it's not certain , but this is I think the best explanation of why that's the case . Один has two syllables Од-ин{ad-in} while “Рaз” has only one syllable . Два{dwa-2} and Три {tri-3} also have just one syllables. So it's easier to count Рaз{ ras},Два{dwa-2}, Три {tri-3} Versus Один , Два{dwa-2}, Три {tri-3}. So Один doesn't fit in that sequence . So whenever you are rhyming things ;whenever you're on the beat you have to be precise with the beat. So that's the explanation for that . Therefore, so use Рaз{ ras } whenever you count things out one, two ,three, four, five , etc..But also Рaз{ ras } doesn't stop here. Рaз{ ras } is not just used for the counting. Рaз{ ras } has also its literal meaning . Рaз{ ras } - the most common meaning is “Time “ or attempt, like: I did this five times. I went there five times. Five times you've been there on five different occasions. In the sentence you can say: -How many times have you been to this bar ? Сколько раз Ты был в этом баре? Skol'ko raz Ty byl v etom bare? So : Cкoлькo рaз{skolka raz} is “how many times” ? Whenever you guys want to ask somebody: How many times you did this?, How many times you've been here ? How many times you pass the exam ? -start that sentence with Cкoлькo рaз{skolka raz} =how many times ? Another example can be which is a Russian saying for measure seven times : Cut one time. “Ceмь рaз oтмeрь, Один рaз oтрeжь” So “Ceмь рaз” { simras } means seven times . Один {adin raz} means one time. It's a famous Russian saying that we kind of use whenever we tell somebody to be careful or being extra careful when they do things. They have to plan seven times more than they do something . That's pretty much the saying of it. As you can see рaз {ras} in this sentence also means times . Seven times you measure, one time you cut . That's the most common meaning . But also рaз {ras} has the second meaning of “since”; whenever you kind of have this “since you did that we're not going to do this “ For example you can say: -Since you got sick then we're not going to go. Раз ты заболел, то мы не поедем . Raz ty zabolel, to my ne poyedem . Рaз ты зaбoлeл {Raz ti zabolil} means since you got sick . Рaз {ras} in this part of a sentence means “since “. So Рaз{ ras} has three major meanings of counting things out and having the meaning of one and then attempts or tries or how many times somebody did something that's number two. Number three is since . I hope now it's clear and hope you're not going to make a mistake in Рaз{ ras} again.
This makes perfect sense and now I know why. I used to be in the US Army and when I was in Kazakhstan they marched using Ras. I always thought it meant “one”. Now I know why they used it instead of Odin.

Back to Один{adin-1} VS Рaз{ ras}.
Один{adin-1} is used whenever we talk about quantity of things.
For example you can say
-I have one question
У меня есть один вопрос.
U menya yest' odin vopros.
So Один{adin-1} in this case is quantifying how many questions you
Have.
Один{adin-1}
Рaз{ ras}.
Another sentence can be :
-I had one table.
У меня был один стол.
U menya byl odin stol.
So again you are quantifying things that you had .
So Один{adin-1} is used for that. Рaз{ ras} on the
other hand is also “one”, but when we count things or count things out.
Imagine if you have a whole bunch of books on the table and you want to count how
many books you have. So in Russian you can say Один{ adin-1} Один{1}adin, Два {2}dva ,Три {3} etc, or you can say:
Рaз{ ras},Два{dwa-2}, Три {tri-3}etc..
So Рaз{ ras}is used whenever you count things whenever you see a whole bunch of things and you count them out.
Рaз{ ras},Два{dwa-2}, Три {tri-3}
So Рaз{ ras } is used for counting. The logic of it is kind of ,you know, it's not certain , but this is I think the best explanation of why that's the case .
Один has two syllables Од-ин{ad-in} while “Рaз” has only one syllable .

Рaз{ ras } is not just used for the counting. Рaз{ ras } has also its literal meaning .
Рaз{ ras } - the most common meaning is “Time “ or attempt, like:
I did this five times.
I went there five times.
Five times you've been there on five different occasions.
In the sentence you can say:
-How many times have you been to this bar ?
Сколько раз Ты был в этом баре?
Skol'ko raz Ty byl v etom bare?
So : Cкoлькo рaз{skolka raz} is “how many times” ? Whenever you guys want
to ask somebody:
How many times you did this?, How many times you've been here ?
How many times you pass the exam ? -start that sentence with
Cкoлькo рaз{skolka raz} =how many times ?
Another example can be which is a Russian saying for measure
seven times :
Cut one time.
“Ceмь рaз oтмeрь, Один рaз oтрeжь”
So “Ceмь рaз” { simras } means seven times .
Один {adin raz} means one time.
It's a famous Russian saying that we kind of use whenever we tell
somebody to be careful or being extra careful when they do things. They have to plan seven times more than they do something . That's pretty much the saying of it.
As you can see рaз {ras} in this sentence also means times . Seven times you measure, one time you cut . That's the most common meaning .
But also рaз {ras} has the second meaning of “since”; whenever you kind of have this “since you did that we're not going to do this “
For example you can say:
-Since you got sick then we're not going to go.
Раз ты заболел, то мы не поедем .
Raz ty zabolel, to my ne poyedem .
Рaз ты зaбoлeл {Raz ti zabolil} means since you got sick .
Рaз {ras} in this part of a sentence means “since “.
So Рaз{ ras} has three major meanings of counting things out and having the
meaning of one and then attempts or tries or how many times somebody did something that's number two. Number three is since . I hope now it's
clear and hope you're not going to make a mistake in Рaз{ ras} again.

Tak poy zhe mne, dogovori
Tu pesnyu nedopetuyu.
Dve gitary zazvenev,
Oni zhalobno zanyli,
S detstva pamyatnyy napev,
Staryy drug, moy ty li...
Ekh, raz da yeshcho raz,
Da yeshcho mnogo-mnogo raz.
Ekh, raz da yeshcho raz,
Da yeshcho mnogo-mnogo raz.

English translation
Two Guitars
At least you will talk to me
O' seven-stringed friend of mine
My soul is overwhelmed by sorrow
At this full moon night
There, a star is shining
So brightly and grievously
With its rays it stirs my heart
Mordantly mocking it
What does she need of a heart?
On her own she knows
That my life is shackled to her feet
With many years of sorrow
O' life, my life
Bring our hearts close together
You, you will be free from sin
And me, let the people judge my fate
From dawn to dawn
I grief, distress and mourn
So sing for me, sing it through
That unfinished song
Two guitars began to tinkle
And plaintively to whine
A childhood's long lost melody
Are you still that old friend of mine...
Eh, do it once, do it twice
And many many times more
Eh, do it once, do it twice
And many many times more
These word "РАЗ" appears in the chorus:
Eh, do it once, do it twice
And many many times more
Eh, do it once, do it twice
And many many times more
Эх, раз да ещё раз,
Да ещё много-много раз.
Эх, раз да ещё раз,
Да ещё много-много раз.
Ekh, raz da yeshcho raz,
Da yeshcho mnogo-mnogo raz.
Ekh, raz da yeshcho raz,
Da yeshcho mnogo-mnogo raz.
