I'm an avid defender of Pop. They have re-released a few of those songs with proper production. The album was rushed and poorly produced, newer versions of Please, Gone and Mofo are night and day. I would have put it ahead by one or two spots...you did good though.. .most lists have it near the bottom.

Hi alexbone98 !!! Yeah, "Pop" is a fine album !!! The first time I listened to it I was not too crazy about the sound and new direction but the more I listened to it and the more I learned to appreciate it !!! Now, you're right ! It's true that just like many other people's lists I put it near the bottom but it's still a "fine/cool" album to listen to for me !!! The thing is they did "so many" good albums haha so that was very hard to find the right spot for it !!! Yeah, it might be 1 or 2 steps higher, it just depends on how I feel !!! I'll check out for these newer versions you mentionned !!! Thanks a lot !!!

I don’t think any of the remixes are improvements. The album is A LOT better than given credit for. It’s a shame the band took the criticism to heart. As much as with Queen (Hot Space onwards), no matter how great the material afterwards could be, the drive to experiment unfortunately ended.

to me the U2's creative peak happened from achtung baby to Pop, these three albums are absolute jewels. Maybe Zooropa and Pop are not their most celebrated albums, but creatively and musically, I think these two plus Achtung baby are the most interesting.

good to see early u2 get some mention, these are the albums that made them, and i always thought achtung baby lacked energy, that early u2 had in abundance.

    • @rrrockfrog2702
      @rrrockfrog2702  4 года назад

Agree with you liar king !! Yeah, there's more energy in their early stuff (first 3 albums) compared to "Achtung baby" !!! It took me a while to "really" appreciate "Achtung baby" cos their musical horizons really changed at that point: more "new" effects on the guitar...I must admit I love the album now for its "atmosphere", its new sound but yeah there's definitely more energy (more rhythm) on their early albums !!! I think "War" really made them but "Boy" and "October" are pretty good too !!! They rock !!! Thanks !!!

October should be in the Top 3.
Only their second album and doesn't have a weak song amongst it, even better than Boy I would say.
I agree with Unforgettable Fire, but Joshua Tree is more down to about 7th or 10th....
October, UF, Boy & War just about cover it for me

I agree with you "October" is a good album !!! And yeah these first 4 albums you mentioned were pretty good and sounded like "pure" U2 !!! I think "Joshua tree" became very famous with those 3 big hits "Where the streets have no name", "I still haven't found" and "With or without you" !!! I think those 3 "hit" songs made it really big (though I really like the rest of the album) cos these became 3 of their most "popular" (played) songs !!! Thanks Andrew !!!

I have the same Top 5. Love that you ranked The Unforgettable Fire #1. It’s a beloved album and yet still underrated by many U2 fans. It’s one of my 3 all-time “stranded on a desert island” albums (along with U2’s TJT and a tie btw their AB and Legend: Bob Marley & the Wailers”). I agreed with a lot of your list.
I only would have probably put Rattle & Hum a bit higher. Give SOE some time to grow on you. While I agree that SOI is #14, many of the tracks on SOE get better with time & more listens. I mean, it’s not in the top half of U2’s album list, but I think it’s better than #13. Interesting to see how high you put October. I may have to re-listen. Enjoyed the video.

rrrockfrog Tough choice between Number 1 and 2. Both are amazing. And I think that Songs of Innocence tends to get overlooked due to the controversy when it was added to everyone’s iTunes account at the time. It’s underrated. Though experience is them at there lowest point imo, and I don’t like seeing U2 incorporating hip-hop elements in there music as much as I like hip-hop

Unforgettable Fire is waaay too low on your list. I realize the second half of that album isn't quite as strong as the first half... but Side 1 of Unforgettable Fire is arguably U2's absolute musical peak.

    9] Zooropa
10] All That You Can't Leave Behind
    11] Songs Of Innocence
12] How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
    13] Songs Of Experience
*I could probably switch 10 and 11 depending on mood and the top 3 are interchangeable also. War is a definite 4 for me.
Pop is very underrated and for me certainly better than Zooropa [and I do like much of that, I just find it a bit samey]. Much more going on on Pop. The slow stuff like If God Would Send His Angels and Please, then the weird stuff like Miami, to the heavy sounding 'dance rock' numbers like MOFO and Do You Feel Loved. Then the singles such as Discotheque and particularly Staring At The Sun were stellar U2 classics in their own right.
Just listened to No Line On The Horizon for the first time in AGES. I love almost all of it. The production is the biggest problem for me. Could have beefed up the heavier songs more and they would sound better than they do [Get On Your Boots and the title track for example] but they experimented on this and deserve credit I feel. Nice atmospheric songs on this like Fez - Being Born and Magnificent, plus Breathe is one of my favourite U2 songs and underrated. Not a huge fan of Stand Up Comedy but Get On Your Boots I do like, even though many don't. The slower numbers such as Moment Of Surrender, White As Snow and Cedars Of Lebanon are also nice.
I'm going to listen to the likes of Atomic Bomb again and now I've just put on All That You Can't Leave Behind.
Edit: Having listened to ATYCLB again No Line is MILES better. It is no contest. ATYCLB is boring me and I think it always did. Yes there are good songs but some of the hits were destroyed by radio play, Elevation isn't brilliant, I've always disliked Stuck In A Moment, etc. etc. For me it is saved by the second half. Wild Honey, New York, The Ground Beneath Her Feet, etc.

I'm a U2 fan but some of the albums mentioned I'm not familiar with. However, the ones I do know, I have my definite opinions on:
    1. Achtung Baby (This album and The Joshua Tree are my favorites, definitely! I love almost every song.)
    2. The Joshua Tree (I love "With Or Without You" and "In God's Country." This is the album that made me a U2 fan.)
    3. The Unforgettable Fire (The title track is my favorite on the album as well as one of my favorite U2 songs.)
    4. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (I love "Vertigo" and "City Of Blinding Light," which I call The Obama song.)
    5. Zooropa (I love the title track, "Stay," and the song about crashing daddy's car, can't remember the title.)
    6. War ("Sunday, Bloody Sunday" and "Seconds" are my top tracks. A classic album w/some classic tunes.)
    7. Pop (I like "Discotheque" and a couple of other songs. Not their worst but definitely not their best.)
    8. Rattle And Hum (I consider it more of a documentary than a pop album. It was nice however to experience what they learned through their tour of America. There're a few good tracks such as "God Part II," "Silver And Gold" "All Along The Watchtower" "All I Want Is You," and "Helter Skelter")
    9. Boy ("I Will Follow" is one of my favorite U2 songs. The rest of the album is just okay.)
    10. All You Can't Leave Behind (To me it's like Michael Jackson's Bad album, I should like it because it has popular tunes like "Beautiful Day," "Elevation," etc.. But, for whatever reason, I just don't.)
    11. No Line On The Horizon (The title track is the only song I liked.)

I'ma have to defend Songs of Innocence real quick. I don't think any of the songs on that album are bad but it has songs that it could've done without. I think it got too much hate because they sold it to apple and apple gave it to people for free. I love it because it's obviously a very personal album for Bono (via. Cedarwood Road, Iris (Hold Me Close), Raised by Wolves, Song For Someone, and surprisingly California (There is No End to Love)) and the songs that weren't personal are still beautiful such as Every Breaking Wave and Volcano. I just feel it gets too much hate and deserves better than what it gets.
Also Songs of Experience could go up a space or 2 aswell because I love Lights of Home and The Blackout aswell as all the other obvious great songs like Get Out of Your Own Way or The Little Things That Give You Away.

    D TIER:
    14. Songs of Experience- A genuinely bad release. U2 has completely lost the plot sonically and even more-so in their messaging.
    13. Rattle and Hum- Musically, this album has some good songs, but it is a conceptual failure.
    C TIER
    12. How To Dismantle an Atomic Bomb- Decent album with some good songs, yet too derivative of their mid-80s work.
    11. Boy: Inspired and driving, this album would be higher but for its under-produced songs, which is natural of a band that began like U2 did.
    10. No Line on The Horizon- Underrated. The only truly dark U2 project. This album makes a poignant aural projection of battling depression, addiction, heartbreak or whatever else brought U 2 your moment of surrender ;). C tier bc a quarter of the songs are awful.
    B TIER:
    9. Songs of Innocence- A genuine creative reflection ranked this high bc of the gem "Sleep Like a Baby Tonight."
    8. October- Very underrated: The songs Fire, October, and Tomorrow are very raw and sonically unique within the U2 catalog.
    7. Pop- Over-hated/ MASSIVELY underrated on a musical level. Some of their most creative, well-crafted work that suffered from a botched rollout, much like SOI.
    A TIER:
    6. The Joshua Tree: Their biggest album and one of their best. Half the songs bore me. "Bullet the Blue Sky" is a U2 gem.
    5. War: A slick, new wave, post punk masterpiece that defines their early sound. New Years Day is a top 5 U2 track.
    4. All That You Can't Leave Behind- Not as much of a return to form as is commonly believed. While conceptually earnest and uplifting, this album carries over U2's 90s electronic sensibilities and blends it with turn-of-the-century europop and a dash of hard rock. Tasty.
    S TIER:
    3. Zooropa- U2 at its most experimental. A grammy-winning alternative album that is an electronic synth-heaven and gorgeous front-to-back.
    2. The Unforgettable Fire- Quintessential U2. Carrying the vehemence of their first 3 albums but with the contributions of Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno. Concise, beautiful, and masterfully written, recorded, and produced. 10/10
    1. Achtung Baby- This is one of the best albums ever made in the history of popular music. Pushing themselves into austere territory both musically and conceptually, U2 utilize their sound to its fullest potential. An exhilarating and fulfilling ride all the way through. "Even Better than The Real Thing is probably the best U2 song ever.

You have Rattle & Hum too low. There's a lot to digest on that album but it's got at least a half-dozen U2 classics on it... "All I Want is You," "Angel of Harlem," "Desire," "When Love Comes to Town," "Heartland," "Love Rescue Me," "Van Diemen's Land"... it deserves to be ahead of albums like Atomic Bomb and All That You Can't Leave Behind, which don't have as many classics on them.
Other than that it's hard to argue with your list. War, Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree, and Achtung Baby are clearly their best albums. Those 4 could be put in any order and I could live with it.

I think the main reason why I ranked "Rattle and hum" at no.10 is because of the live tracks !!! I mean the idea of making (half and half) a studio/live album was fine but I wish they had more "new" studio tracks instead of the live tracks !!! That being said, I still like the album and I'm glad you enjoyed most of my choices !!! Also agree with you that those albums from the top 4 could be placed in any order cos they're all "classics" !!! Thanks a lot Whammy Bard !!!

Unforgettable Fire is an incomplete sounding record. It has bits and pieces that sound like unfinished demos, you can tell they kept too many of Bono’s scratch tracks. Bad and Pride and ASOH save it. Title track is 80’s good. Def top 5. October must be retried by many, it is the most spiritual sounding, their tone is muted and warm. The death of his mother is reflected in Bono’s delivery of Tomorrow, Gloria is the yearning sound that was magical when it was new. And the title track on piano! Cmon guys chill out and spin it again. Top 4. War changed too many things, how drummers and guitarists play, SBS is their first and best anthem, Drowning man is sublime, 2 Hearts? Challenge any group to sound like that. #1 Joshua has to be 2 for the pure fidelity of sound if nothing else. That album dominated everything for awhile. Only U2 could do better than themselves. Achtung very high, the new sounds and catchy melodies, again another anthem, the sound of Berlin at the time, it is superb. The rest all have special moments, Boy has the most, for lifelong fans from the old school it should prob be #1 followed by UABRS, better live disc than any, even WAIA which has The great live ASOH.

I disagree. The instrumentals and slower, moody pieces in The Unforgettable Fire fit in perfectly for me, alongside the epics/faster numbers [Pride, Wire, A Sort Of Homecoming, Bad, title track]. MLK is a gorgeous and peaceful way to end the album. Joint favourite for me with Achtung Baby.

Sorry Buddy but if you had heard them during the 1980s, you'd be disappointed to have the Joshua Tree served up after a 2-3 year wait. With the exception of "In Gods Country" at a push, the rest is glib, self-important dross, loved by rich yuppy clowns who "cared" about Amnesty and Greenpeace...

    1. The Joshua Tree (arguably one of the 25 greatest albums in rock history)
    2. Achtung Baby (the most successful "musical makeover" for a band since The Beatles did Sgt. Pepper's)
    3. War (U2's most self-assured album... this is the music they had to get out of their system or they were going to burst)
    4. The Unforgettable Fire (side 1 of this album might be U2's absolute musical peak... side 2 is not quite as good but does have the classics "Bad" and "MLK")
    5. Boy (for a first attempt by a bunch of teenagers this is an impressive album)
    6. Rattle & Hum (the most underrated record in their discography... there's a half-dozen classic U2 tracks here)
    7. October (U2's "sophomore slump" album yet most of it still holds up today)
    8. Zooropa (their weirdest LP, but it's also a rewarding album once you get familiar with it... I love "Stay," "Lemon," "The Wanderer," "Dirty Day," and the title track)
    9. Pop (about half the songs are excellent and the other half are failed experiments... the highlights for me are "Gone," "Wake Up Dead Man," "Please," and "Staring at the Sun")
    10. All That You Can't Leave Behind (a respectable attempt at recapturing their '80s sound... most of the songs are good but only the foursome of "Kite," "Beautiful Day," "In a Little While," and "Walk On" are classic U2)
    11. Songs of Innocence (imo, tracks like "Every Breaking Wave," "Iris," "Volcano," "Cedarwood Road," "Sleep Like a Baby," and "The Troubles" represented a return to form after 2009's somewhat disappointing No Line on the Horizon)
    12. How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb (a reasonably solid album start to finish... but for me the only real standout tracks are "City of Blinding Lights," "A Man and a Woman," and "One Step Closer")
    13. No Line on the Horizon (there are only 4 songs on this album I still care for: "Magnificent," "Moment of Surrender," "Fez," and "Cedars of Lebanon"... the rest is forgettable)
    14. Passengers: Original Soundtracks 1 ("Miss Sarajevo" and "Your Blue Room" are great but the rest of this album is for music eggheads only)

My friends didnt care for U2 music, most anybody i asked did not like U2, and of course there was the haters. so, i drove around for thousands and thousands of miles listening to U2 in my lil ford ranger, all alone, all the time. I wore out the cassett player till it just wouldnt play anymore. But with internet and youtube im alone no more, its nice to see and hear positive things about U2. . . but i must say how can The Joshua Tree NOT be eveybodys absolute favorite U2 album ? ! (just kid'n) ( just 'joshn')

And Stay is easily one of their best singles.
