The following comes from a mission statement that appeared in the inaugural issue of SPIN. It means as much to this current staff as it did to the original writers and editors.
A confession: SPIN is imperfect. It’s rough-edged, restless, insatiably curious. A little aggressive, a little cocky. Youthfully uncompromising, but maturely flexible. Romantic - definitely! Irreverent - sure! Unpredictable - yes. Very alive.

Stewart realizes that the hardest thing for drummers is not fancy fills; it is maintaining consistent tempo without a click track.
he rushes like crazy and sting hated it. His live shows are no where near consistent. Sorry. it is true. Is he still amazing, yes. That comment was about you.
I used to imagine that he drove Sting CRAZY with his manic personality. And....A click track? I'm 66, a self taught drummer, and the only click track I'VE ever used is the one in my head. I don't find this tune to be difficult at all to play.
@@dme1016 the verses have a very odd rhythm. I’m self taught and played for 28 years. It may not be that hard. But him counting it threw me off as it did him as well. Way easier to play it without counting. That’s the self taught part of me. And I play tons of odd time signatures
@@timmycostello4552 I hear ya'. I found that playing in 4-bar or 8-bar rhythms makes it easier to keep your roll consistent, with any song. That's what Steve Gadd did on Aja, which we know is one of the great drumming tunes of all time.
Click tracks .. no please.
31 years ago when i asked my drum teacher if he could give me homework, specifically for the HiHat , he said, pic up any Police Album and figure out any song because no one plays as much groove and feel on specifically the HiHat as Stuart Copeland. He wasn't wrong.
I would say there are TWO drummers with such a description... one is Stewart and the other would be Neil Peart
@@avolite719 I'd agree that now I think about it. ☝️👍
Jeff pocaro enters the chat...
Jeff would never lose this groove!! Im jk obv this is sorta parody from stew here i love both drummers but i think jeff was just UNreal feel and the amount of artists he recorded for alone..is insane just in terms of a credited/ uncredited studio musican goes! Feel wise i think he's got stew outmatched. Maybe it was the BlowCaine. . Gave him just that little powdered edge haha 😂 im kidding tho theyre both absolute drum legends
@@AndrewdrumsOH Jeff and Stewart are both legends. Instead of wasting our time arguing who’s better I think we should just appreciate the talent of both.
"It's on the upside down of the back of nowhere." Perfectly put.

That was such a drummer’s comment. I bet all drummers laughed when they first heard him say that. 😂

@@demetriussealie2571 Yes, only a drummer would put it that way, but to any other musician you know what he means. A gem of metaphor.
I am 55. When I grow up, I want to be him.
49 here. Me too
Haha "grow up"
I am also 55 and I play like him... When he was 12!😅
I'm 40 and grew up with a father loving this band so in turn I began to love them, but I'm a guitarist. Drums are way too hard and there's no thanks and the women are sparse
This guy is amazing. No one plays like him.
Check out El Estap on RUclips. He plays better and one handed.
@@paLm22he is good. But playing rapid speed with double kick accents is impressive for sure. But there is more to drumming than what el estap does by far
@bigBOSScross252 so true. Speed doesn't mean music or creativity. Unless the Estonian is in a band like the Police, all he has is speed. Not creativity.
@@defiverr4697 The speed haters always make the wrong assumption that the speeder is incapable of creativity. One can have both, you know.
@Fromulus yes, true, but where is his band? If someone has speed, where is the body of work? Right now all he has a body of covers and copying. He should stop covering and start creating in a bonifed musical group. We are waiting.
It was this very man that started me.playing drums at 8 years old back in 79.......44 years later im still learning his grooves.
He is one of the greatest drummers of all time in my opinion
You ever listen to Oysterhead?! His playing on their first album blows my mind. Specifically Rubberneck Lions is so fun to me. I’m not a drummer but I love listening to him play. I don’t like The Police cuz their songs lack dynamics or any quality songwritings for the most part. Walking On the Moon and Roxanne are great. And I love so much of Stewart’s standout playing but man are so many police songs just monotonous and boring otherwise. They really never made many songs that had powerful changes in the chorus or bridge. I think Sting, as talented as he is, was a weak songwriter. (Yes I’m aware this is bound to be an unpopular opinion! Ha. Check out Oysterhead tho!)
@@uptownbeef8943 "monotonous and boring"...welp, based on their 80's sales figures...some stat of which puts them in the top 5....a whole lotta people disagree with you.
@@PaPaWizdom Have you heard any of the highest selling pop now? It’s not exactly indicative of quality. Haha. That said I recognize The Police have their place. I’m just not personally a fan outside of Copeland’s playing. Love me some Oysterhead tho! Which the vast majority of folks wouldn’t get down with- to each their own!
@@uptownbeef8943 But today's pop is as objectively measurable...the talent and skill sets are nowhere near what they were in the 80s. Was a bad example to use to try to defend your stance. Just sayin.
@@PaPaWizdom Hmm… yeah i’d say that’s fair in some senses. Touché. I wanted to argue that most of the producers and co-writers behind current pop have the skills to do more but that’s an entirely different conversation. Maybe I’ll give some old Police another chance in your honor soon. But no promises ha.
God I miss being a kid in the 80’s
I'll never stop being that.🤘
One of the great humans of drumming. Looking good, Stewart!
I'm mostly self taught off the likes of John Bonham, Peter Criss, Stuart Copeland and Neil Peart
"Spirits" is a masterpiece. The weird backbeat and when the snare hits the 2 in the chorus is just sick!
Man, I totally feel ya!
Look up nomeasno wrong full album
I love that backbeat moment too. Incredible. The setup is perfect. But I think it hits on the 4 before the chorus - a signature Copeland move I love. Does the same thing in King Of Pain on "I'VE stood here before..."
He’s like Steve Martin meets your high school friends cool smart Dad
Yes! Exactly! 😂😂😂
Steve Martin is a genius, so you mean a dumbed down version of Steve Martin?
Ha! Perfect!

Stewart is such a classy and chill dude!!
Chill yes, except when in presence of Sting, maybe 😂
No, just kidding !... Well sometimes, if you really think about it...
Not chill, but very up. Great drummer and funny guy.
Your drumming throughout the entirety of Ghost In The Machine is just amazing. In great- drummers conversations, I always say, "Listen to Ghost..."
So glad I saw The Police on that tour.
It’s a sorely underrated drum album
The last Police album Stewart flexed on
Copeland bounces effortlessly on the skins. His groove, technique, timing, and creativity are unparalleled. What he's done is teach us to not think about anything else but feel...
How can you not love Stewart Copeland? He, along with Kurt Vonuget, Ian Anderson, Christopher Hitchens, Curlanski, and a few others comprise my short list for a fantasy dinner party.
I know Stewart Sting is demanding from interviews I've watched rehearsals he demands perfection and you gave it to him and the band each and every time out every tune so something to be proud of !
I love it: he's not afraid to make a mistake. ❤
I'm not afraid as soon as I sit down and play one minute I made a mistake lol! I started in the mid 80s, but I always was more of a "dabbler" drummer my whole life, even quit twice one time I quit for seven years due to financial issues when I lost my house during Obama. I play once a week rarely twice in my bedroom. haven't been in a band in 25 years and last time I played on stage was about 2005ish on open jam nights. I think I play pretty well for a dabbler lol But I do get angry when I'm trying to do a song and takes forever to get this part. .
Part of what makes this such a tricky part to play is the guitar rhythms that Andy Summers is playing throughout, especially during the break down, when he introduces the little melody. That melody can be heard as phrased both on the upbeats, or as following Stewart’s down beats. So if your ear hooks onto the down beat version for too long, you’ll get lost. Incredible stuff and a fun challenge to play!
you nailed it
That kind of thing happens alot for me. I hate it.
Including the epic bassline 😅 man, i would be lost after 30 seconds
That last verse has something like five different rhythms at once. It's as complex as any prog.
This happens to me a lot when playing constantly repeating single note phrases on the guitar. You're ok for a bit, then they sort of start to "turn around" against the beat in your head and trip you up!
Being a drummer myself I couldn't agree more your amazing my brother
Saw Gordon the other night in concert. It's high time to put the band back together for one last Ultimate Tour. Let's make it happen, Stuart,
My favorite drummer in the world!
In the "material world?"
Stewart, thanks for all the great music you have filled my life with!
Mr Copeland, I am in awe of your talent.
I still believe that Sting was the privileged/lucky one to have been recruited by this dude. But I still wonder about the look on their faces the first time they jammed together and after hearing Sting's vocals over it, and if they really knew what they were onto
No kidding. Would be an amazing story to hear Stewart recant that.
I think Stu had a pretty good idea what he was in for with Sting, vocal-wise. Sting was not only the bass player but also the lead vocalist with Last Exit and that's exactly where Stewart first heard him. He knew immediately that he had to steal that singing teacher from Newcastle away from that jazz rock outfit and stick him into his own band.
they were terrible early on
@@iggypopisgod9 they were feeling their way beyond post-punk white reggae-ish power pop on Outlandos d'Amour. Besides "Roxanne"; "So Lonely", "Can't Stand Losing You", and the opening of "Be My Girl" (before he gets the inflatable doll😅) are strong songs that, say The Cars, would love to have on a debut album. Nobody listening to it knew that Sting would become a songwriter on the level of Paul Simon.
Yes, I believe they did.
Master percussionist. For anyone who hasn’t read it already his autobiography book is a gem. Go buy it at once you’ll apreciarte his life even more if already a fan
That is STILL to this day my all time favorite Police tune because it is so uniquely intricate. :)
It’s on the upside down, in the back of nowhere. Perfect.

@@thomasbell7033 What, the part about humility?
@@Mialamorena1 Yeah. It's part of the man's charm. But imagine being in a band with Sting for the better part of a decade. You'd need a healthy ego, I'm guessing.

Love this Guy, he has always been one of my heroes!🥁
I remember seeing the video, "Spirits In The Material World" on MTV. It was the first release from their 1981 album, "Ghost In The Machine." I was a senior in high school and just got into guitar playing. At that time, I'd had never heard anything like "Spirits"; I noticed right away that the time signature and rhythm were so sophisticated and complex, the song just captivated me instantly. The album is a classic.
That song is still so relevant today! We need more social critics in music today with technically creative and experimental drummers! It all comes together on that song, with a good dose of truth! ❤

One of the GOATS
The Police and Rush are the two bands that have top musical talent in all of the instruments and writing.
Led Zeppelin?! It's easier for everyone to be great in a trio, but Yes were winning in every category in 1970s music paper polls.
Yes and ELP and of course Pink Floyd!
There are dozens of bands that have great writing and technically proficient musicianship as well, not just two.
@@UR_Right24 There's a video I seen recently about how Rush highly respects the bad Yes, Just take a listen to "Close To The Edge" or "Heart Of The Sunrise" these are very intricate songs by far as any Rush song, some of Yes and Rush are similar in a high difficult rating to copy put it that way. Bill Bruford is just as difficult to play as Neil, so is Carl Palmer btw speaking from a drummer, I been playing since the mid 80s
@@m42037 Being technically difficult from a musical or musicianship standpoint does not necessarily make it great music either though. I acknowledge that Dream Theater puts out some of the most technically difficult music out of the rock/prog/metal genres, with crazy odd time signatures and instrumental gymnastics, playing every note ever conceived at 32nd and 64th note tempos, but I seriously don't think they have one great song, imo anyway.
My older brother and I used to listen to the Police just gushing and air drumming to Stewart's chops. Thank you for your wonderful music that will be timeless for eon"s to come Mr Copeland.
