Hello Mike. This is the first time one of your videos has arrived on my RUclips, and I plan now to find your other tutorials, having enjoyed, and learnt from, this one. What's made this video so enjoyable for me is that you've used the 'ordinary' Distress inks, not the Oxides. I don't have any of those, and am reluctant to start buying them. Even on the lower cost sites, they're more expensive than the Distress ink pads and like so many other people, my life is now more difficult, and my purse has had to be padlocked shut to anything that isn't heating or eating. Now that you're here, I look forward to learning from you, so thank you!
brilliant video, got on with the job in hand, which is rare in my experience, making it very informative and a pleasure to watch. Will have to dig a few more of yours out, thank you, Marj (81) old but still very interested, thanks
You can stamp over these Distress Inks with other Distress Ink colors as well, and they'll react with one another, even over darker colors. Also, you can use Perfect Pearls powders over them and heat set to create wonderful sheen. It's great for stamped images. The Perfect Pearls powders have a bonding agent inside of them that is designed to work well with Tim Holtz Distress Inks. 👍
I forgot these old techniques. They are wonderful, and your tags look smashing! Thank you so much for this, Sir. New subscriber and notification ell clicked! ❤😊
Great refresher/reminders of techniques. Thanks! I needed this, lol. I get stuck, sometimes, just doing the same techniques and ignoring others completely when they are so very effective!
Mike ... I do not have any Distress Inks and now that you have shown five techniques linked to watercolours, I will start a collection. This was a wonderful video and I appreciate the "going back to basics" - especially taught and demonstrated as well as you do. Thank you very much for sharing your skills and producing five beautiful tags. Best to Ian and Mr Bentley. Linda
I’m very new to the world of Distress inking so I was trying to learn different techniques through RUclips and it’s so overwhelming that there were videos showing 20 or 30 techniques that I can get overwhelmed sometimes that the excitement dies down. But this video is just the perfect one I need. Starting with 5 is just enough for me. And most likely I won’t forget the steps on making them. The simpler… the better!! Thanks Mike!!
Tim Holtz has lots of videos on his blog from releases and just because videos over covid when we couldn't go out. They are usually about one product but can be quite long. This video is great because it's short & informative & gets to the point quickly ❤
THANK YOU! I realize this is an older video but as usual I am late to the scene, and I've just started incorporating Inks into my art and illustrations. This is so greatly appreciated.
Mike, Thank-you so much for sharing these “basic techniques”. I am in fact a newbie and I have just discovered your channel, the amount I have learnt in watching your channel for just a short time is simply fantastic. I really enjoy how well you explain everything and your calm voice is very soothing, I’m looking forward to getting my art supplies out and crafting along with you 😉🙏🌻
Thanks for this Mike. I am relatively new to distress ink so learned a lot from this. I’ve seen some of these techniques before but until this beautifully clear demonstration was a bit clueless. Now I am inspired and reaching for my mini blending tool and water spray as I watch. Going to try them with some of your stencils, which are brilliant by the way. Good and strong unlike most of the flimsy things on the market! So grateful for the constant stream of inspiration you provide. X 😀
Excellent tutorial! I don't have any of the Distress Inks yet (working on that ;-) ), but will play with these neat techniques with what I have in the meantime. I'm looking forward to developing some more tools for my art journaling! Thank you Mike for sharing these and keeping us inspired.
I didn't know any of those techniques so I can't wait to try these out! I'm a noob to all this artsy stuff and I'm really glad I found your awesome channel. Cheers for sharing your fab knowledge with us Mike! 🙂💎
Thank you for getting my creative juices flowing with the Distress Inks. I just can't afford to by a whole set again in Oxide. Love the backgrounds and painting.
Those purple, greens and oranges have my brain going about playing for Halloween already! Great tutorial. I work with Oxides a lot but now I have a better grasp of the Inks :)
What do ya know I got here first! Stamp CPR 😂 love these it was a great reminder and it was great to have these all in one video. It’s a keeper My friend!
A while back I started using Dylusion inks and recently acrylic paints. Now the people I work with look forward to seeing what my fingers look like from the weekend. And most of all, I wear it proudly through the week. How can art not be an ice breaker? Everyone wants to know what you’re doing!
Great ideas, Mike. Looking forward to playing with these techniques. Can only do it with Distress INKS, though, NOT Distress OXIDES, right? TFS from Cheryl in AZ.
Not exciting, you said, when you identified your “craft mat” as a chopping mat. Color me excited anyway! I’ve been using one for other craft-related techniques but not for smooshing/mushing ... until a few minutes from now. :^) Thanks for that and for the refresher course. Esp. Loved the first background ... and the second ... and ...
Hi Jean, my blending is rubbish too 😩 but I’ve just ordered Tim’s blending brushes 😊 here’s hoping they can work some magic with my abismal blending technique 😃😃😃 Mike just makes it look easy! 😃 they may be something for you to try x
Why am I having trouble with my Distress inks. You can see the circular motion on everything I do. There seems to be plenty of ink but I have a hard time transferring the ink to paper. It appears dry but it is not. Yours seems so even and creamy. Mine has circle marks. 😢
Sounds like you may be using too much pressure! Grab some scrap practice card and try varying your pressure from almost none to heavy, you’ll soon see what works best for you!
Just Love this! Love the ghosting....

THANK YOU! I realize this is an older video but as usual I am late to the scene, and I've just started incorporating Inks into my art and illustrations. This is so greatly appreciated.
Thanks for this refresher course, so that we can use what we bought to its full potential. Love the calm manner of your teaching.
You can use a paintbrush with water (instead of spray and finger) to create the smushed ink spot for technique #1.
Yes… but that would be another technique.. not in my top 5!

This is so cool. I thought it was only the distress oxides that react to water. Oh I'm gonna have so much fun with my inks now. Xxx 😁
I love your art! Keep these videos on techniques coming please!!
At the start of my crafting journey, so found this extremely useful. Thank you 😊

Yes, Oxides give a totally different look!
This was amazing! Thank you! I had to fast forward on the last one because it is way past my bedtime lol. AnaMaree.

I just got that tshiert u have on!
Are the tags on watercolor paper?
Great! I'm a beginner with these products. But I have distressed oxides (not inks). Can I use those in this way too?
How do these distress inks react with sealers? Smearing? TY
If your sealer contains water, it will smudge. Alcohol/oil based ones wont.
What kind of paper did you use for ink and water demo’s?
Watercolour paper.
Thanks for showing the techniques Mike, distress inks are something I never really think to use. But my blending, is rubbish...shh lol.
Hi Jean, my blending is rubbish too 😩 but I’ve just ordered Tim’s blending brushes 😊 here’s hoping they can work some magic with my abismal blending technique 😃😃😃 Mike just makes it look easy! 😃 they may be something for you to try x
I have looked at the brushes a few times- still undecided. Think its cos I am also rubbish at backgrounds.....
Why am I having trouble with my Distress inks. You can see the circular motion on everything I do. There seems to be plenty of ink but I have a hard time transferring the ink to paper. It appears dry but it is not. Yours seems so even and creamy. Mine has circle marks. 😢

I would LOVE to walk and in see my husband playing with my inks!
Thanks, I never know what to do with my distress inks. Some of them are dry as bones, even when I first bought them.
