I'd like to see the same type of testing with the Wraithbone primer.
I've tried out some of the paints in my local Warhammer Store and found some work better over Wraithbone than Greyseer.
Some of the Contrasts do seem to be designed to work over other paints than the 2 stock primers. I've tried some of the greens over Retributor Gold, and found a few interesting things.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 лет назад +2

@@garygcrook every other Contrast video in my channel is over wraithbone, fyi - so hopefully that helps a bit :) I didn't have enough bits to do both without it just looking like a mishmash of random parts.

@@Epicduck Well you could always make reference to others' Contrast comparisons, like Warhammer Chelmsford's, yet with your own opinions and takes on it based off your own experience with the paints.
      facebook.com/WarhammerChelmsford/posts/2296142703797033
Even if all you said was 'it seems to work better over Wraithbone from what I've seen elsewhere.' I think that would be brilliant.

    • @Epicduck
      @Epicduck  5 лет назад +4

"Works better" is very subjective though. Shyish over Wraithbone has slightly pink highlights, while over Greyseer it has almost grey-blue highlights. Which is "better" depends entirely on what you're painting, and your personal preferences. I don't feel qualified making that judgement call for other people :)

I'm going to do some "how to get the most out of your Contrast paints" style follow ups. I really slapped these swatches together quickly because I only had access to the full line of paints for 2 nights. But yeah, I'm not trying to make clickbaity hype or diss videos, I just like giving people good information and painting fun stuff :)

Skip em both, and find somewhere you can get Montana 94 who have 120 colours, dries more matte than GW or Army Painter and costs a quarter of the price, while being better (not the American "montana paints" but the Spanish one) just make sure it's the 94 formula, their other formulas do not work for miniatures. Their yellow sprays made Iyanden a breeze.

I'll just reinforce the point made in the video, but with a little added punch: if you DO have lots of skeletons, skulls, or bones, you WANT to get the Skeleton Horde contrast paint. Prime white, hit it with the paint and you have exactly what you want w/out having to use a base, a layer, and a shade. And the result will be uniform.

Great video, definitely the most helpful overview to date... Although... ;)
You should do a follow up doing the same test over the wraith bone primer (although that's a double the bits problem :) As it does make a surprising difference to colors. That change between a warm and cool base makes a difference in the lighter colors especially, whites, flesh, blues... As that slight shift from cool warm will change the lighter area of a contrast especially.
And... As a day 1 pick list, you should still have a yellow. I know you covered the whys and why not of the yellow... But it was dependant on owning a shade if not...
So when arranging a general buy pick list, I would still say a yellow is a must... If you don't have the shade ;)

    • @MrThangil

For gaurd, I found that army painter skeleton bone spray + skeleton horde contrast = wraithbone & aggaros dunes but $5 less. It also is nearly identical in result but two steps less in process to the grey prime + zhandri dust + drybrush + wash process I have been using after seeing on Sonic sledgehammer. I really appreciate this in depth comparison, nobody else has put this much effort into this yet. Thank you!

Dark Angels Green seems like the archetypal 'fantasy forest cloak' color. I'd say their iconic color comes from the edge highlighting, more so than just a dark green armor.
Unless I was going to paint an Ork, or other organic/non-armored army, I don't see myself picking any of these up just yet.

I think this review is better than the two others I watched because the comments are more in depth. I especially liked the comment about the surface tension of the paint. What I missed was watching him apply the paint and seeing how it flowed. Since the other reviewers did paint on camera it is not a great loss. Another reviewer mixed the contrast paint with the normal medium which appeared to break the surface tension a bit, but not enough for my taste. I think my use for this type of paint will be to paint ghosts and perhaps fur or bark, but never armor.

I’m painting space marines and ships for a Star Wars game, and I’ve bought:

    Black Templar
    Ultramarines Blue
    Talasar Blue
    Snakebite Leather
    Blood Angels Red
    Nazgred Yellow
    Orc Flesh

It might have overlap with some of the color choices, but I felt there was some good option for color effects.

This was really an excellent video even for someone that obviously wasn't the intended audience (I'm somewhere on a loooong journey learning from mainly Lenz, Venturella, Wappel and DiPietro). I've already got own initial pick list of standouts IMO and was just trying to learn about the hue and saturation of those I don't have to see if I wanted to add any. Probably going to grab talassar blue and maybe snake bite leather and one of the military greens - probably the yellow leaning one as I can mix the other one easier with the dark angels tone already. I think its amusing that my pick list only shares space wolves gray (which honestly is absolute favorite in the whole line as a way to lay down a quick initial sketch of starting volumes to work from on nmm jobs!). It just goes to show you there are absolute no wrong ways to approach your hobby and so much diversity. I can't help but love it. Liked and subbed!
    My personal pick list is:
    Space Wolves Gray
    Aggaros Dunes
    Iyanden Yellow
Arkhelian Green (which I weirdly find to be a very very blue color with only a bit of green in it...somewhere between blue and turq.)
    Dark Angels Green
    Flesh Tearers Red
Gryph Hound Orange (both this and the Iyanden Yellow are such strong colors and thats not so common with yellows and oranges)
    Fyreslayer Flesh
    Volpus Pink
    Skeleton Horde
I do like the apothecary white but really only use it to mix for tints and it separates so so badly that I can't fully recommend it.
I really think however many years down the road now it is that Citadel knocked this range out of the park. I wish they were cheaper and in droppers but other than that a fantastically useful tool for the hobby tool belt. Absolutely not just a product for novices or quick table top jobs - any one of any skill level can use these in a lot of ways to great effect. Wappel has used them from time to time much like he would oil paints to lay down a fast and furious messy base coat before he does all the good stuff on top of it. They're also arguably better at colorizing metals than products made specifically for that purpose from Scale 75 and Badger.

I have to say you've really undervalued Basilicanum Grey. It has replaced Nuln Oil in my paints box. Magos Purple is another one that I have found a hundred uses for. It started out as the flesh color for my Daemonettes, but then I also found uses for it as a bruise color for my Death Guard and a rich Cabernet undertone for a lot of my purples. Good initial review, though.

As a person who plays death in AOS, I've found that Athermatic blue is actually really useful. I tend to do a lot of different glowing effects on my models, using different types to break up things so my nighthaunt don't look all the same. I can't say how useful it's been in speeding up the painting of my nighthaunt. I like using it on the skull heads and arms of things like chainrasps and grimghasts.

How ironic, these paints were supposed to be used differently, but the community will always be creative. All I see are people who found a new "technical" way to apply these to get some incredible results, not just slap them on a bright Primer. Chitin Armour is my favourite combo: Retributor Armor Basecoat slapped with a thick layer of a darker Contrast, it looks like an organic Chitin you'd see on beetles!

Now that contrast paints have been out for a few weeks and I've had a chance to work with them I use them mainly for a glazes now. Mixing them with the medium about 50 50 and putting over a coat of whatever color produces some amazing results. Barely any edge highlighting needed and I'm real happy with the results. It's my new reverse wash method basically. Some colors I still use from the pot but colors like warp lighting green and telessar blue have great effects over bright vivid colors

I use the grays/black/yellows for NMM on infinity models. Super easy, barely an inconvenience.

If you haven't put skeleton horde over a silver base you really should try it out, it tints the metal in a really natural weathered look that makes it look old but not necessarily dirty or grimey

Dark angels green would work well for larger ork nobs and traditionally orks get darker as they get bigger

Yeah this is something that annoys me about the newer Ork box art. For some reason they give older Orks a lighter skin tone

Me too, I still paint em dark. Warbosses I start black and work the green up. Elysian green is probably the lightest I'd go

Amazing breakdown, thank you for this. Very helpful, specially the visuals and your ideas for uses.

I would definitely use Gore Grunta Fur along with Snakebite Leather for variation in straps and bags.

Whilst you are looking at the paints for GW miniatures i was looking to use them for historical minis ... very very interesting stuff.

Ps if you have seraphim sepia, don't get skeleton horde, even if you are gonna paint a lot of bone, it's essentially the same

Brilliant review. Rather than just glowing praise or venomous hate gives a very good colour by colour breakdown making deciding which to try less hit and miss.

I like this video. It’s well made, and great for learning the colors. I do think after using these paints for awhile that the full ability of these wasn’t unlocked in these earlier reactions. Some of these that you passed on I’ve been using in combination with Vallejo and P3 and Citadel regular paints to do some pretty sweet things. Great video. I truly believe after a longer time using these that they are more of a tool in the sense Lahmian medium and Ardcoat, and washes are a tool. Using them by themselves is fine but they will most likely grow with the artist if practiced with and used. With this I’m not sure any of them are a straight pass. And while awesome they don’t need to be in a lineup either. They are very interesting and I’ve grown to really like them.

Magos Purple worked super well for my deamon skin.
I used a stong beige basecoat and the restult was the perfect grey skin with purple tint that i was looking for.
But man do you need to watch out for pooling with these...

Best video to date that I've seen looking at the contrast paints. Definitely gunna get me some Ork flesh for my Orks (funny that) and possibly some of that Darkoath for when I get round to working on my guard army.

Great Review, very useful, thank you!i've bought the entire range to make my own thought.I love the idea behind Contrast but some color seems weak.I hope GW can adjust their consistency or pigmentation ration.

I found out that Fyreslayer Flesh on top of grey primer (I'm using badger airbrush stuff) comes out with a nice tone for Africans. I think some of these contrast paints can pull double duty depending on what is used for the base layer.

Changing up the undercoat is going to be a great way to get more mileage out of these... we're still looking at the tip of the iceberg.

Aethermatic Blue seems like it could be great as a base for Plasma, and then you can edge highlight for you main color (purple, green, etc).

Very nice commentary on each individual paint. Given that each Contrast pot is almost $9 after tax, I wouldn't want to pick up a color that I would probably use 3 or 4 times.

That's the ticket. I only had access to the full set for one night, so I hammered these out for my own reference. My initial purchase was 10 paints, the 3 new basecoats, and Contrast Medium. Oddly, not the exact 10 I picked here, because a few colours were already out of stock ;)
