This is the story of the smolensk air diaster. If youve been a long time viewer of the channel then youll be like wait youve done this video before, why are you doing it again. Yeah youre right i have but that was the russian version of events. You see, this crash is controversial to this day. The Russians and the Polish still can't agree on what happened to the Polish presidential plane so I think that we should listen to what Poland has to say on this whole matter. Theres just so much noise out there even the official reports from both countries feel like theyre pushing their own version of events. Therefore I think its important to look at the issue from both sides and that way you can make the choice for yourself as to what really happened
On the 9th of march 2010 the polish president, Lech Kaczyński was on his way to smolensk in russia. For the commemoration of the katyn masscare. This flight would be performed by the TU154 of the polish air force.Prep for this tri had begun a month in advance the embassy of poland in russia was abuzz with activity as they sorted out the logistics of the mission. Having a russian speaking crew would make the trip a lot easier as the russian controllers were more comfortable with russian over english. These are the sorts of things that were discussed. With the prep done the plane took off at 5:27 am with 96 people onboard. As the jet turned towards russia they climbed to their cruising altitude of 33000 feet. As they were passing through belarusian airspace they were in contact with minsk control and they got the first taste of the weather that was waiting for them at Smolensk. “Polish Air Force one zero
one, for information, at zero six one one SMOLENSK visibility: four zero zero meters, fog”. It was foggy at a small runway in russia. It wasn't the best of conditions but it also wasn't the worst. As they got closer they kept getting more updates “Papa Lima Foxtrot one two zero one, KORSAZ, fog, visibility four hundred meters” By the way KORSAZ is the designator for the smolensk airport. At this time the pilots were in contact with the pilot of a yak 40 that had landed an hour before them and he was relaying the weather that he experienced to the pilots of the presidential plane. He did not have good news, the visibility was about 400 meters but the ceiling was low at 50 metres it was so bad that an IL76 after the YAK 40 had to go around twice. Since this was a presidential plane the captain couldnt just be like hey this is bad lets go somewhere else he passed that information onto the diplomatic director. He let the director know that the weather was bad and that they probably would not be able to make a landing and that theyd try but a landing was not guaranteed. “Well, then, we have a problem We could hold for about half an hour and then go to an alternate airport” the director then took that information to the president to see what he said. But even as the plane started its descent into smolensk, the president had not made a decision yet. As they were downind to the base leg the controller asked the crew if they had ever landed at smolensk. The captain had landed in smolensk before just days ago. But as the plane made the turn to the base leg the controller warned the crew that they should be ready to go around when they hit 100 meters as the weather was quite bad. As the plane lined up with the final the controller started giving the crew their positon with respect to the glidepath. But things were not going well for the crew of flight 101, when they were 8.3 kilometers away from the runway the tu 154 was 130 metres above the glideslope and the plane was slightly climbing. As the flight progressed the controller kept guiding the plane down. But in the cockpit the TAWS engaged and the terrain ahead warning lit up in the cockpit. But the crew kept going when they were 4.6 kilometers from the runway they were still having problems. The plane was a bit too high and they were to the left of the runway. That didnt really change as they got closer and closer to the runway. Except for one tiny thing. The plane started to slip below the glideslope. The pilots knew that somet

Some of the more hilarious theories:
    - giant electromagnet brought it down (aluminum anyone - lol!)
    - helium bomb exploded making the plane drop (lesser gas density than the air)
The pilots under pressure screwed up. ATC was no help. That's it.

Sorry, presidents do President things, pilots fly. What is a President doing making decisions about whether a plane lands? I agree that the event they were going to was sensitive, but security and the president should have had nothing to do with pilots’ decisions. They should have planned for the possibility that weather would be poor and they might have to land somewhere else. Part of bad CRM was effectively allowing the president and his delegation to become part of the crew. The lesson here is that Russian and Eastern European safety standards are not as high as European ones. I’d think very carefully about whether I flew, if I lived over there.

The safety standards are standard ICAO and IATA. You should educate yourself a bit before throwing out blanket statements. Flew all over that region for 25 years with no issues.

It has been widely and clearly demonstrated that the key factor was the insistence of the president to land anyway, and the psychological pressure on the captain to comply, even in conditions that were far from ideal. It represents an interesting case study for CRM purposes. No conspiracy, please. The theory that it might have been shot down by the military is utterly ridiculous.

There was no pressure. They could go around, land in Minsk, wait 2 hrs and fly when weather improved. They simply were commanded into terrain by the ground control who had a radar and should have guide them. Also there was a go around attempt clearly heard in the cockpit, but the aircraft failed to respond.

@@Fidd88 What you say is true. But these were military pilots. Busting minima is the least of the commercial pilot errors that they are expected to do when the mission requirements demand such behavior.
These were not pilots diverted and given a long term assignment to fly a different set of missions. Complete with retraining and clear instructions as to their changed operating mode. They weren't even given experience on the plane type. They were pilots grabbed off the line and told to make sure their flight happened without any problems. Do what you have to do. All that is one hundred percent on the Polish authorities managing the flight.
This Polish version doesn't mention it but other videos raise the issue of the direct in flight pressure on the pilots to complete the task. The passenger telling the pilot in a forceful manner to in effect *just do it* and his role in the military structure puts him several layers above the pilot's position, that's on the Polish authorities. It's definitely not on these pilot's failure to say ....screw you, go ahead and court martial me......
The pilots weren't trained to commercial flight pilot standards. They weren't expected to fly to those standards. H*ll, they weren't asked to do so for this particular flight.

Again, it is even more routine and insisted upon that military pilots act against their better judgement on occasion when receiving orders to do so.
It was up to the Polish authorities who had plenty of time to ensure that the pilots were up to commercial pilot standards in qualifications, training and inclination if that is what they wanted. Instead they got the kind of pilots that they wanted who did the kinds of things that they were expected to do.

This crash happened because of childish leadership, complacency, bad habits and poor training
While Russia doesn't have a problem with eliminating anyone that might be even the slightest annoyance, and usually in ways that sound like it's straight out of a James Bond movie. For example the umbrella airgun that shoots a tiny poisoned bb. So with that being said blowing up a plane isn't Russia's style, it lacks any creativity and they would know that the first thing everyone would think is this was a assassination and Russia was behind it.

One thing on Russian assassinations though - they're often not bothered at all about being obvious, and indeed sometimes go to great lengths to make it very clear who did it. Take Alexander Litvinenko, poisoned with polonium-210, a poison so outrageous that it was clearly chosen specifically to make the assassination and its state-sponsored nature as obvious as possible.

It feels that not only this plane's fate was sealed, but with it the future of Poland. After what happened our polititians, it seems, have lost it's mind. President that died that day had a twin brother who, to this day, still blames the opposition for the crash, feeding into conspiracies that opposition was the one who assasinated him. Jarosław, brother of Lech (the president) is now ruling the party he once ruled over, and by his decisions makes all of our lives miserable, allowing only other lunatics that believe in conspiracies into politics and other very important positions in our country.

"at that time"? The relationship between Poland and Russia has been unfriendly since forever, going back to the days of Piast dynasty and the Kievan Rus, which is a shame, but it is what it is.
Having said that, while I don't doubt that Putin would not hesitate for a second if he could somehow cause such a tragedy if he knew it was in his interest, the evidence that this was just an accident caused by the monumental fuckups of the Polish military is clear. The errors made by the Russian ATC did contribute to the crash, but they were not decisive, the captain's decisions were. I'm not saying he is to blame - the whole military unit and the government are by not training the crew properly and by deciding to send a non-Russian speaking crew to a disused, poorly equipped Russian airbase.
There's also no motivation for this to be sabotage - the president in question was nearing the end of his term and was quite unpopular, he would have lost the elections in a couple of months regardless. His brother couldn't even win despite a massive boost in popularity due to sympathy and the party remained in opposition for many years to come. Partial truth.
Pilots turned off the barometric altimeter (more precise one), cause it would create false groud proximity warning while approaching an unregistered military airport.
In turn they are following radio altimeter which calculated the height from the surface below with a help of radio signals.
But there's somekind of wide valley in the west of airport, on the flight path.
The rapid loss of height in their active radio altimeter is them leaving that valley

Also, yes, Błasik could override the authority of the captain and did so even before the take off due to the laws introduced by the Kaczyński brothers and Błasik himself. In fact, neither of the pilots were certified to take off, with the weather conditions in Smolensk at the time.

There's absolutely nothing controversial about the crash, and it's not what Poland has to say. The direct cause of the crash was president Kaczyński, his twin brother Jarosław, and the chief of the Polish air forces at the time that completely decomposed any safety procedures. It started when Kaczyński tried to force the pilots to land in an active war zone over Georgia years earlier, and the crew denied. In the Smoleńsk crash, the first pilot was the first officer during that previous flight. On top of that, the first pilot was NOT IN CHARGE of the flight, the air force chief Błasik was (according to the laws introduced not long before for that specific reason, because the childish president was mad that the pilots of the Georgian flight refused his idiotic request). The pilots couldn't even have left Warsaw in the first place, not having had proper certifications to land in Smolensk at all. STOP HELPING SPREAD THE CONSPIRACY THEORIES!

even if this was a pure accident (disabling TAWS by the pilots, and need to do so should mean this plane should not try to land there, ground control didn't help etc.), Russian side did horrible things to bodies of the killed in the accident. Multiple boidies found in single coffin, or cigarette butt sewn into the president's leg... Also they made investigation due to wrong convenction, where polish side was barely consulted, and it was far from joint one, which helps to forge conspiracies etc. Wreckage is completely in Russia, years after final russian report, which also does not help. Russians did everything what they can (and even more) to divide polish society with this crash.

the only real difference is that the Russian report conveniently skips over the failures of the ATC, but in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really change the fact that this was the fault of the crew and the whole unit responsible for the flight. The fact that it was disbanded soon after tells you all you need to know. Regardless of the mistakes made by the Russian ATC or the political pressure by the president, on board of an aircraft the captain is God, he should have diverted, end of story.

0.40 : Semantic note. Even after watching your video, we can't make a choice for ourselves about what really happened. What happened actually happened regardless of what we may think.
What we CAN do is conclude what we BELIEVE actually happened. Our belief may or may not be wrong. The facts (whether we know them or not) do not change based on our perceptions or the depth and breadth of our knowledge. We can only talk in terms of our beliefs based on what we know and the weight and trust we choose to assign to the individual elements of any given set of circumstances.
Sorry if that sounds pedantic but sloppy language leads to sloppy thinking ... as the whole "woke" frenzy demonstrates all too scarily.

Your presentation is just a pece of junk. Simply because it looks like it is your opinion. You should make reference to your the findings you are presenting.
The plane parts after the crash are kept in Russia. The plane exploded on air and parts of the TNT were discovered on after the crash. Poland finished the investigation and concluded that evidence shows number of explosions on board. If you do presentation you should refer to reports about the crash: we have 3 different findings of the crash infestation simply because 3 comissions did the investigation ( Russian, Polish and New Polish Parliamentary Comission ) Let mi give you the lesson, if the plane hit the ground it would make a huge whole in the ground. Instead that you have the plane parts spreaded all over the ground.
The crash was masterminded by the Russians to eliminate Kaczynski.Macierewicz, who heads a government commission investigating the disaster, told PAP that the commission will notify the prosecution about the possibility of the incident being a criminal act aimed to assassinate Kaczynski and the remaining persons on board.
Macierewicz said his commission had found proof of several explosions on board the plane shortly before it crashed, which confirms the assassination theory.
"We cannot tolerate a situation where we have proof that this was an assassination attempt, and no procedures at all are initiated. This is why the commission has prepared a motion for the prosecution to launch investigations not just into the crash itself, but also into the (possibility of - PAP) the assassination of the Polish president," Macierewicz said.
