THE SIGHT & THE SOUND 7/10 : Balkan Bulgarian TU-154M LZ-BTW documentary from SOF to Bourgas

  • Almost two decades ago, in September 1996, my family and I flew all the way from South Korea to visit the Black Sea island of Nessebar in Bulgaria. How could I then miss the opportunity to sample life onboard on Balkan's Antonov 24s, which were disappearing at alarming speed in Eastern Europe ?
    There were more surprises on this visit, than I have expected.
    Yet, my brand new SHARP camera broke down frequently, not to mention the batteries. This camera was the first generation of video cameras with digital recording. Obviously the digital recording technology 18 years ago was still at an experimental stage. The video head got worn out immediately. After a few seconds the camera turned hot and taping was interrupted, especially during the most important phases of taping : Take off and landing. Eighteen years later, I tried to assemble the fractions of this puzzle of video fragments as best as I could.
    This is the result.
    This documentary features the fifth flight of seven on this visit.
    Originally the return flight was to be operated by AN-24, this flight was an international feeder onto Bourgas and I was offered an earlier lift, so I accepted. This flight was to be operated by a TU-154, my first TU-154 experience onboard Balkan Bulgarian Airlines, and it turned out to be a really unpleasant experience onboard a Balkan Bulgarian Airlines flight, the second unpleasant experience in two days. The crew strictly prohibited any use of cameras on board due to "company regulations", so all footage has been made under conditions of utmost discretion and leaves a lot to be desired. Nevertheless, despite the unfortunate circumstances, I decided to go public, in view of the historic value of this material. A lot of editing and cutting scenes was unevitable.
    I hope, the esteemed viewer will understand and appreciate.

    I flew on one of these great aircraft - London Heathrow to Sofia also a few days later on a Tu134 to Burgas - in 1988. I was allowed to stay in the cockpit on landing at Sofia airport - I will never forget it.

    I flew Air Balkan TU-154 from Oslo to Bourgas around 1998. A great experience. The female pilot flew it like a fighter jet. Nose streight up after take off and the landings was hard and fast, with the plane in a streight position, so all the wheels hit the ground at the same time.
    My seat was at the left wing emergency exit. The emergency exit door leaked so much air after takeoff that I thought I might have to Ask for another seat. But a few thousand feet up, it made a loudish suction sound and finally made a seal😄
    At a constant 950 km/h the flight was a full hour faster than it would have been with a standard charter 737.
    A plane with a real soul and a experience I will always remember.

      It is clear that the flight was almost empty. Hence the steep takeoff. It also used very little of the runway to get airborne.

    I flew in a TU154 with Aeroflot from London Gatwick to Moscow. It looked like an old bus inside, rattled and creaked a lot, but it could take off in a short distance and climb fast. Seemed to have plenty of power and solid build for those gravel runways! Very impressive 👍🤨

    I flew on one of these in 1988 To Sofia from LHR. I was 14 at the time and it was my first flight in a non Boeing aircraft. I remember it being more impressive and larger than the B727's I was used to flying on at that time..I was allowed to stay in the cockpit as the plane descended into Sofia.. a magical experience.. A week later I also flew from Sofia to Burgas but on a Turbo prop... It afforded great views of the landscape on route to the Black Sea.

    Ach da fühl ich wieder wie ein kleiner Junge wenn ich diese Video sehe!!! Als ich 12 Jahre alt war,bin ich das erste mal mit der BALKAN Tu 154 geflogen,was für ein Erlebnis !!! Dieser Sound der Triebwerke,der Start,die Landung,ich war sogar im Cockpit,einfach Momente fürs leben ! Danke für das Upload für dieses tolle Video! Wie eine Zeitreise !

    Best plane in the world. The only disadvantages it's not automated. You have to pilot in manually and should pilot it precisely without mistakes. But sound is the best!!!

    1:42 Today, an airplane Tupolev Tu-154 from bulgarian airline Balkan will fly the line Sofia - Burgas. Please fasten your seatbelts before takeoff, (something about the seats here that I can't translate to English) and the tables in vertical mode and to not smoke during the entire flight. Thank you.

    The plane was unladen. 20 seconds to rotation is very fast. When it's full, it's usually 30-35 seconds.

    Die Flughäfen voller Tu-154, das waren herrliche Zeiten, die möchte ich zurück.

    1967 to 1971 only flew on Balkan Il18s, TU 134, anf Antonov 26s. Did experience a flight on a Yak (similar to a DC3) Sofia to Varna, some of the passengers stood at the back of the aircraft smoking and conversing; from take off to landing in Varna (no cabin crew)

    Can't believe they used a Tu-154 for a tiny domestic flight like SOF-BURG.
    Fantastic airline and aircraft, but clearly it was not very profitable when it entered the free market in 1989

      But in some airlines the Tu-154 survives until today.

      Paka1918 I know. 767 really showed have far they came. The worst thing was Balkan Bulgarian never had to die, it just needed to modernise, not just in terms of fleet, but the way the company was managed. Two Israeli companies: the Zeevi investment group and Knafaim-Arkia. They bought it and sold all it's hard assets. The Bulgarian government officials including the prime minister at the who sold the airline should go to prison.

    thanks, for the video. my very first international flight was on tu-154. aerflot and then balkan. balkan was way better in terms of service. btw, i do not understand why you were upset that they did not allow you to film. back then it was not very common plus the mindet wad still that of the communist times, when foreigners were not allowed to film. i am glad though that you managed to make this video for history. balkan was bankrupted only a few years later.

    This airplanes TU-154 were horrible..noisy & smelly..how did you fly from South Korea to Sofia? through Moscow or Western Europe or Middle East(KE)???

      I remember that Balkan Bulgarian airline( Now defunct,unfortunately) flew from Colombo??....Happy that you loved them but they weren t nice for the long haul, I when travelling to the Far East would like some comfort and inflight entertainement..the IL-62 and TU-154 had neither for that long journey..only positive was that they made stops on the way...as soon as the USSR collapsed all Eastern European carriers started getting western equipment and some of the carriers(Malev,Interflug,Balkan) fell apart...did you travel KE to the Middle east?..once south korea had relations with the new Russia they scrapped their fascinanting route over the middle east to Europe...What I understand these soviet airplanes weren t economical when it came to fuel?

      read well = BALKAN tu154b2 and M did not configure them with comfortable seats for intercontinental flights that does not mean that the plane is uncomfortable do not be ignorant BALKAN should have seats and the regulatory space between rows of seats for long-range flights THE airline is the culprit but we must not forget that the ridiculous pressures of their passages were very attractive in other airlines is the opposite are excessive to Mexico it was very cheap to travel in il62 aeroflot from sahannon to havana mexico managua lima santiago de chile all via shannon havana and in il62m from 1975 to 2001 today an exaggeration costs a flight to wherever
