I'm sure any qualified pilot of a manual aircraft such as the Boeing 737-200 and earlier could land it relatively smoothly, but also Russian pilots were in general better pilots than Western pilots. There is a reason why the RU air force still can use the IL-76, while the USAF is using new aircraft. Obviously its related to budget reasons, but overall Russian pilots were definitely better than Western pilots back in the day.

~25 years ago now, a generation. Handycam and even pro video footage of the mid-late 90s has a very distinctive look where its not as low-fi as the 80s/early 90s stuff but somewhere in between that and digital. Anyway, always loved the Yak-42 and those Tu-134s looked like passenger fighter jets. Very neat sights and sounds for the historical record. The 134 survives on as a trainer for heavy supersonic bombers like the Tu-22 and Tu-160. It's modified with a long pointy supersonic nose. Some of the Russian aviation video channels on YT capture them from time to time and they're painted in a full military livery with a big red star on the tail. Sharp looking paint scheme. There's also a Roscosmos VIP 134 with a variation of the classic Aeroflot scheme blue piping.

Very nice! - I really like the shape of russian aircrafts!
This video reminds me to the time when I had to be more often in Russia. Used flights to Sheremetyevo 2 and further to Siberia etc. via SVO 1, Vnukovo (VKO) or Domodedovo (DME). It was always different to fly with TU-134, TU-154 or IL-62. Russian aircrafts had a very specific sound. - Even more like a turbine but this was probably because the aircrafts haven‘t had turbofans...
Wintertime it was even more interesting: The runways in Siberia where still full of snow which would have scared western pilots probably.
Sad to see the monotony of western models flying in Russia today.....:-(

What a wonderful time to be a pilot. When planes were simple and the pilots and flight engineers were in total control of their aircraft. In essence the plane would become an extension of the flight crew.
