andrew lane When I was living on Kauai, HI and United Airlines started to fly directly to Kauai from Los Angeles around 1982 or 1983, United started out with the sleek DC-8’s for about a year or so then the DC-8’s got replaced by the DC-10 and that probably lasted for maybe until the mid to late 90’s, then United replaced the DC-10’s to Kauai with the 757-200’s and 737-800’s with additional flights from LAX, SFO, and Denver, more major airlines like American flying directly to Kauai with the 757-200 from PHX and the A321 or sometimes the 757-200 from LAX, Delta Airlines between Seattle to Kauai and LAX to Kauai with the 757-200’s, seasonal West Jet and Air Canada between Vancouver B.C. 737-800’s and 737 Max 8, Hawaiian Airlines A321 between LAX, Oakland, and Kauai

I flew into Honolulu in 2005. Even as recently as then that airport was crawling with 3-holers. There were tons of DC-10s, MD-11s, L1011s, and aloha's 737-200s. Times really have changed.

That computer guy aka Aryan ATA was still flying around DC-10's and L1011's at that time, Omni Air International had DC-10's back then, and so did Northwest. Also KLM had their MD-11's. Plus there were all of the cargo operators as well. There's more I'm forgetting but those were the ones I can remember off the top of my head.

Back in March 1997 for the first leg of our family's trip to the Philippines from Houston, TX we flew on a CO DC-10 from IAH - LAX, only that this DC-10 had "Continental Micronesia" on the fuselage. For our LAX to GMP we flew on Korean Air 747-400, but couldn't land at Gimpo as scheduled due to heavy fog; got diverted to a US airport lower south of South Korea. That meant we missed our connecting flight from Gimpo to Manila; since most of the passengers on that Korean Air flight from LAX to GMP were filipinos, PAL (Philippine Airlines) was able to fly in one of their aircraft (it was one of their MD-11) to GMP to pick us up and get us to Manila (nearly 10 hours behind scheduled). It was a real treat to be able to fly on the outbound legs two tri-engined classics (DC-10, MD-11) as well as the unforgettable 747-400! Plus, for our trip from Manila to Baguio City (our final destination) we flew on Asian Spirit de Havilland Canada Dash-7, and then on returning to Manila we flew on PAL's Fokker 50 aircraft.

I remember my first trip off of Oahu, and it was on a Delta L-1011 in 1985. The takeoff was stunning because I had a window seat on the starboard side, and could see the ocean as we took off the reef runway. And as we climbed, we banked sharply and I looked down to see the shoreline, waves, swimmers, paddlers, and boats. Within minutes, we were enveloped in white clouds, and I lowered the window cover to block the light so we can watch the movie.
It felt like only a couple of hours later and already we were descending over LA. I raised the window cover and saw people washing their cars. I even could read the license plates. Just as it seemed we were landing onto some neighborhood street, we crossed a fence line and over the runway. Our plane landed so smoothly that I didn't even feel the wheels touching the tarmac -- the only sensation was the aburt deceleration as the reverse thrusters engaged. The whole cabin applauded that landing.
Wow! Amazing takeoff and landing that are memorable to this day.
This video was made 16 years later, in 2001, yet I can't even recall my one trip that year. I had to check my notes to see that I had flown Aloha Airlines, round-trip between HNL and SNA. On my last trip this year, I went to Ireland and Alaska, and I don't remember much about those flights, except watching from my window seat several F-22s take off from Hickam.

rainbow, that went from #1 wingtip to the #3 wingtip!
(American, and a few other companies, wanted unpainted
aluminum, where possible. Yes, it is MUCH harder to
    make "silver Skin" aircraft.)
    I wish I had had a camera!
Back story, before I was shipping flowers, I was building
MD-11s. (Yes, that FedEx take off got my attention. I
    could have worked on it.)
About 6 minutes in, the KAL Md-11 taking off, 50% chance
I did the electrical install on the #1 (left side) engine. Working
on the East Ramp, in Long beach DAC, I was sitting on the wing,
at the leading edge, while the engine crew was removing that
motor. They said, I needed to move away from the edge, for a
few minutes, while the did their stuff. A SERIOUS LOUD bang,
from under the wing. Only thing that kept me from being
launched airborne, was "pucker factor." I was "picking underwear"
out, for a few days. Felt like I was sitting on a table, and someone
hit the underside, with a sledgehammer. All the BUMs (Business
Unit Managers) poured out of the East Ramp office, and were
GLARING at me. "Hey, I didn't do a thing! I'm working on electrical
    installation.
    steve

Remind me why some of the DC-10's have the extra main gear. And there's nothing like the growl of Her Majesty taking off.

After UAL and Delta. No more U.S. carriers will have the 747-400 in passenger service by 2018. I miss the Tristar and the DC-10. But not seeing the 747 around airports is going to be difficult adjustment.

The first wide body aircraft I was on, was a DC10 in mid 90`s from Oslo to Heraklion. Sad to see that they are all gone now. But I have to admit that the newer 787 and A350 are better.

I don’t think I can watch this video in one sitting to think about what’s going on in front of my eyes. Less than 19 years ago and the only twinjets in sight here are a couple of 777s and an A330. Even if narrowbodies were included you’d probably only see Hawaiian DC-9s and Aloha 737-200s. I visited HNL in 2015 and the only trijets in sight sat over at the FedEx hangar. The rest was tepid twinjet soup, sprinkled with Air Force jets. We’ll reminisce of the present day in another 19 years when even these holdouts are at Victorville.

There is actually cargo DC-10s and MD-11s, an Orbis flying hospital, which is either a DC-10 or an MD-11, and an L-1011 used for spacecraft launches.

_At least 30 percent if not more of the original DC10(MD10), and MD11s manufactured are still flying cargo. A majority of the those jets are in the liveries of FedEx, and UPS. Safe to say the jet's design has been around for almost 50 years!_
