This brings back many happy memories. My dad owned a vending machine repair company and we had TONS of his repaired items in our playroom growing up in the 60's. Pinball machines, a 25 cent pool table, candy and soda machines (That 7 oz bottle of coke! YUM!), and a Seeburg Jukebox that played 45 records! Great job and thank you for bringing back that pleasant memory.
Wow! That thing looked like it's been sitting under water for the past 40 years. Glad you could remember how it went back together again. Very nice work indeed!!
@@TRGRESTORATIONS I get your point, but on the other hand, it was an original part of machine. Maybe it can be smaller or you can place it on the yellow metal frame. Anyway, it's just a detail. You did an amazing job, and thanks for reply!
@@2degucitas I remember both the dice charm and the lighter. The lighter was functional with fuel, and most households at the time had the fuel and flints for them. As a kid, it made you feel grownup to have something akin to a Zippo!
If I recall correctly, the black and white dogs (a Scottie and a Westie) were a favorite toy decades ago. And since many kids enjoyed fishing and wanted to have lures like their dads, the fishhooks were still common when I was a kid in the seventies.
@@2degucitas As I recall dad put fluid in it and it did work but I was too young to be allowed to have a working lighter lol. I think it went in the drum table drawer with other lighters, cigs and playing cards for many years.
Bad idea. Nu Finish doesn’t belong anywhere near a car. Anything that contains petroleum distillates is basically waxing your car with Lemon Pledge. Great for wood, not for paint. The best stuff to use on your cars paint are full synthetic polishes. I’ve been using Zaino Bro’s products for over 20 years, and nothing comes close to the depth it gives the paint. Even the newest ceramics and nano waxes can’t touch its depth. The car basically becomes a mirror that looks like you can reach into. A lot of work, and it’s gotten pricey over the years, but well worth it.
Great Restoration! (Incredible original amount to work and engineering that went into making this little machine work!) What a shame we have lost the ability, and can't make pieces of art like this today!
The two scotty dogs look like the magnetic dogs I had as a child... Magnets on the bottom of each would either attract or repel the other dog, depending on the polarity. Could that "unknown" item be the two magnets, stuck together?
I would put mine on the top and bottom of cardboard and make the one move and it looked like it was moving on its own because they couldnt see under the board lol.
Although the metal surrounding the lock on that might be too thin for it, a neat trick for removing locks is the freeze it with a air duster by holding the can upside down, then banging a screwdriver through the middle of it. I've done that on arcade games I've gotten that are missing keys and it usually works pretty good, it usually breaks the lock's cylinder and the back half of it falls inside thus unlocking it.

That is so funny! I remember toys like that in those machines and begging my mom and dad for nickels, dimes and quarters trying to get them. Funny thing is, nobody seemed to give a second thought about the lighters, guns and other weird toys and that were advertised in the display like that!
Very nice video. I remember those little lighters when I was a kid. Back in those days in the 50s and 60s, smoking was highly promoted. So having a little lighter as a kid made you want to smoke as you got older. I'm glad that way of thinking has past.
I wonder if you could have retro-brighted the large clear plastic part? Or even if the yellowing was caused by bromine being leached out of it- does anyone know?
The two dogs were called "Magnetic Scotties" (variously named; extant as early as the 1930s). That "Beats me" is the (to be glued on) base of one of them, a magnet.
This might be a stupid question but I'm new to this. I've got a Victor 77 that I want to paint a custom color but I don't have a blast cabinet or rotary sanders. Can I just Clean the metal cabinet and spray paint over the existing paint? Will there be any adhesion issues?
You might be able to reverse some of the yellowing on the display piece of plastic by Retr0briting it. You can do that by submerging it in some hydrogen peroxide and leave it under a UV lamp or out in the sun for a while. It does wonders for de-yellowing plastics when restoring vintage electronics, toys, and games.
I have a similar machine. The center piece between the top and bottom is chromed. It looked like yours was to. Love these old machines! Nice restoration.
Very nice restoration wirh great attention to making surfaces flawless. Yes those toys were in vending machines. Yes, there were tiny working lighters and dice and rings that would turn your finger green and the ubiquitous pairs of magnetic Scotty dogs. I even got a tiny working, but dull, jackknife out of a similar machine about 1966. Curious - did you restore the cufflinks whose 'stones' had detached before reassembly? Great job.

That first "fish hook" is a fly worth $1 to $2 and the second is a common jig and is worth about .25 Back in the day, that fly was probably only .25, but they were a lot more common because more people fly fished back then, but it's coming back strong these days! Back in the day, toy vending machines only cared about tempting kids with cool objects, there wasn't the modern obsession with safety. Things like fish hooks, lighters, and small knives were considered harmless, and most kids had them. In fact, the same quarter a kid might put in that vending machine could just as easily have been used to buy a pack of cigarettes from another vending machine.
Yeah, visible around the 7:00 & 7:30 marks, more or less & I think 18:40s if I recall. Looked great, though! Question: if you'd treated the big plastic piece one more time w/ a fresh cleaning solution, could that have removed more yellow? A related question: if heating guns can be used to restore plastic colors, what's their effect on cler plastics? Can heating guns fix yellowing?
It was probably set up on a counter top in a store. Most of the damage probably came after it had gone out of use. Probably stored in a basement or some leaky warehouse.
