Check out this awesome restoration of a Victor Vending Co Toy Machine from the 1950's!
This was a difficult restoration because this thing was absolutely trashed!! Everything from the yellowed plastic, to the pitted and rusted metal, to the toys themselves needed work!
Total time for this restoration was about 30 hours.

This brings back many happy memories. My dad owned a vending machine repair company and we had TONS of his repaired items in our playroom growing up in the 60's.
Pinball machines, a 25 cent pool table, candy and soda machines (That 7 oz bottle of coke! YUM!), and a Seeburg Jukebox that played 45 records!
Great job and thank you for bringing back that pleasant memory.
I knew you could restore it, but never believed in a million years you could get that plastic that clear!!! Great job!!
This is your best video yet. That thing was rough. You did a great job. I use Nu Finish on my car, it’s good stuff.
+Rescue & Restore thank you so much! 😎
I love how you guys just support each other it’s so heartwarming
Please post more videos, you guys are great
Bad idea. Nu Finish doesn’t belong anywhere near a car. Anything that contains petroleum distillates is basically waxing your car with Lemon Pledge. Great for wood, not for paint. The best stuff to use on your cars paint are full synthetic polishes. I’ve been using Zaino Bro’s products for over 20 years, and nothing comes close to the depth it gives the paint. Even the newest ceramics and nano waxes can’t touch its depth. The car basically becomes a mirror that looks like you can reach into. A lot of work, and it’s gotten pricey over the years, but well worth it.
This 70s color is great but you forgot 25 cent stickers ??
Wow! You did a very good job! Replace the 25 ₵ sticker. It gives the machine an extra charm!
+pistelli57 thanks! I thought about a new sticker but it just seemed such a shame toncover up any of those cool old trinkets
@@TRGRESTORATIONS I get your point, but on the other hand, it was an original part of machine. Maybe it can be smaller or you can place it on the yellow metal frame. Anyway, it's just a detail. You did an amazing job, and thanks for reply!
Wow! That thing looked like it's been sitting under water for the past 40 years. Glad you could remember how it went back together again. Very nice work indeed!!
Wow, I had the dice and the mini lighter from a toy machine back in the 50's. Nice job!
+Barb Chester cool! 😎😎
Did the lighter work?
@@2degucitas I remember both the dice charm and the lighter. The lighter was functional with fuel, and most households at the time had the fuel and flints for them. As a kid, it made you feel grownup to have something akin to a Zippo!
If I recall correctly, the black and white dogs (a Scottie and a Westie) were a favorite toy decades ago. And since many kids enjoyed fishing and wanted to have lures like their dads, the fishhooks were still common when I was a kid in the seventies.
@@2degucitas As I recall dad put fluid in it and it did work but I was too young to be allowed to have a working lighter lol. I think it went in the drum table drawer with other lighters, cigs and playing cards for many years.
I am always amazed how you guys remember where all the tiny pieces and parts go. It turned out awesome. Great job. 😺♥🎄♥
As a vintage toy collector I need this in my life. Gotta get one.
All that and you didn’t put in $0.25 and show it work?
I doubt he had any of the little balls that would have contained the toys!
@@rickvaiBBB
C'mon Rick,he just needed a few ,which he could have easily just gotten from a working one at any store..😒
Not showing it drop the toy,is like making a porno and stopping right before the climax...😎
@@larannar123 You are a sick man .... but you're right.
aJAY_ _9121 he did such a great job but agree would have loved to see it actually work and also he didn’t put on a new 25 cent sticker on front. It was so cool it actually had some old vintage toys inside!
Many people would walk away from that disaster. Basic tools and a bit of knowledge and its close to perfect enjoyed watching
Thanks!!
I am always in awe of people who can reassemble all the components again. I would already have lost track after one screw. But then again I am the worst on technicality in the world
Although the metal surrounding the lock on that might be too thin for it, a neat trick for removing locks is the freeze it with a air duster by holding the can upside down, then banging a screwdriver through the middle of it. I've done that on arcade games I've gotten that are missing keys and it usually works pretty good, it usually breaks the lock's cylinder and the back half of it falls inside thus unlocking it.
Great Restoration! (Incredible original amount to work and engineering that went into making this little machine work!) What a shame we have lost the ability, and can't make pieces of art like this today!
Great resto on that. It was in rough shape. Lots of good memorys.
Absolutely awesome restoration !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you very much!
Excellent restoration and steady focus on a very rough and complex project....I do believe you are ready to build a "time machine"! ; ^ )
That is so funny! I remember toys like that in those machines and begging my mom and dad for nickels, dimes and quarters trying to get them. Funny thing is, nobody seemed to give a second thought about the lighters, guns and other weird toys and that were advertised in the display like that!
I seriously thought this machine was five feet tall from the first 30 sec of the video 😳
lol! Thanks for watching!
Could make a stand for it and make it 5 ft tall lol
The two dogs were called "Magnetic Scotties" (variously named; extant as early as the 1930s). That "Beats me" is the (to be glued on) base of one of them, a magnet.
+R Da cool 😎
@@TRGRESTORATIONS Damn, he beat me to it. You could still get them in novelty machines when I was a kid.
Agreed. I had a set of Magnetic Scotties as a kid.
@Gregort Schmidt, I still have set. I use then in my sewing box to corral my needles.
It seems your blast cabinet isn't working the way it should your pick up tube is probably full. You should be getting way more glass beads.
I recall being told "No, they're garbage" too so many of these toys. Dear old dad, ah the memories.
Very nice video. I remember those little lighters when I was a kid. Back in those days in the 50s and 60s, smoking was highly promoted. So having a little lighter as a kid made you want to smoke as you got older. I'm glad that way of thinking has past.
The two scotty dogs look like the magnetic dogs I had as a child... Magnets on the bottom of each would either attract or repel the other dog, depending on the polarity. Could that "unknown" item be the two magnets, stuck together?
+Donna M. Schmid I believe so! You’re the 3rd or 4th person to suggest that’s what they are, so I’d say that’s it 👍🏼
I would put mine on the top and bottom of cardboard and make the one move and it looked like it was moving on its own because they couldnt see under the board lol.
Beautiful restoration, you should put that on a stand. Really nice job.
What a lot of work and a great overall machine, once you were done.
Thank you! :)
You did a fantastic job, this was a hard one,
I think the fishing lures were the oddest prizes in there.
Absolutely beautiful.
I thoroughly enjoy watching other people's restorations. Subbed.
Ah...those were the days when little kids were responsible enough to play with fishing hooks and lighters safely 😆 Great job 👍
Yep! Nowadays they eat Tide pods and lick toilets. 😐😐😐
Bullshit. My grandfather has a story about his brother lighting a barn on fire. Kids were just like they are today.
Wow. I know that was a monumental amount of work. And all those parts!! Loved it!
Thanks for watching!
Nice resto! Bizarre ‘toys’ as you mentioned. Still, it has a place of honour now and not in landfill.
Thanks!
This might be a stupid question but I'm new to this. I've got a Victor 77 that I want to paint a custom color but I don't have a blast cabinet or rotary sanders. Can I just Clean the metal cabinet and spray paint over the existing paint? Will there be any adhesion issues?
Great job on the vending machine, the toys were a pleasant extra, well I think so, keep up the great work.
+Howard Kennedy thanks! 😎
Was this an earlier restoration? Your blaster looks brand new, and no powder coating.
All natural..earth friendly cleaning materials. I'm a fan for life. ♻🌍✌
Awesome job.
VERY BEAUTIFUL JOB
Thanks!
Angle's hands restoration!👍🏻👏🙋♀️🙏
you forgot the replacement 25 cent sticker.... but otherwise, good job.
First fishing lure is a dry fly, for trout. Second is a "popper", used for panfish or bass. Both are normally fished with a fly rod.
Cool! Thanks for watching!
👏🏼 good job
GREAT RESULTS!!!
Incredible job!!
Thanks for watching! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
One thing I have learned from your videos and Rescue Restores videos is , film taking stuff apart it helps later 🤪
I have a similar machine. The center piece between the top and bottom is chromed. It looked like yours was to. Love these old machines! Nice restoration.
Thanks for watching!
Didn't think you could restore it. But I was wrong, again! Looked great, and I liked that you told how long it took.no one. Else seems to do it and I'm always wondering,so thanks!
Thanks!
Another great restoration Tim. I might be able to get it broken down, but I don't think I'd get it back together. Paint was the best option for the finish Tim and could they have been powder coated? Also, do you use different media for the sand blaster depending on the metal? I've been binge watching your old videos as well as those since I subscribed that's why these comments are late. You're a true craftsman my friend. Cheers from Tennessee.👍😷🍻
We remember as a li'l whelk perusing the lineup of Folz vending machines at the local groceteria whilst mum checked out. Alas, Folz has been gobbled up by Coinstar and its founder, Roger Folz, passed this last April...
Maybe this was the machine people who were on a budget went to for gifts for loved ones 🤷🏽♀️ haven't you ever heard "where did ya get that ring a crackerjacks box?" Just a thought. Great restore thanks for sharing be blessed
I wonder if you could have retro-brighted the large clear plastic part? Or even if the yellowing was caused by bromine being leached out of it- does anyone know?
Amazing transformation
Thanks!
For a quarter you had a very pretty real item at that time ! Today for 25, you have a nail....
Dude, I have to apologize ,I took one look at that and said no way you can save it! Wow, Great Job!
lol thanks!
The clip-on earnings date it👍🏻
wow that looked never better 😎👍
Thanks!
They were not called "toys". They were called "trinkets". I'm 72, I remember. Great results on the restoration! 😊
Thanks for watching!
You could give this away to a movie theater or amusement center if you want.
Very nice restoration wirh great attention to making surfaces flawless. Yes those toys were in vending machines. Yes, there were tiny working lighters and dice and rings that would turn your finger green and the ubiquitous pairs of magnetic Scotty dogs. I even got a tiny working, but dull, jackknife out of a similar machine about 1966. Curious - did you restore the cufflinks whose 'stones' had detached before reassembly?
Great job.
That is a stunning restoration considering the condition it was in. Very interesting
Thanks! Yeah, this one was pretty rough
Wow - too much to say .. first you should get a video award for "Most Expressive Hands in a Motion Picture". You would have been great in the silent film era. lol. Those toys in the window were "click (coin) bait" - you never got those toys when you dropped a coin.Good to see good old fashion spray paint rather than powder coat. Not all of us have the oven. AND - As a toy collector ... I want that thing! Nice piece.
Thanks! Thanks for watching!
That first "fish hook" is a fly worth $1 to $2 and the second is a common jig and is worth about .25 Back in the day, that fly was probably only .25, but they were a lot more common because more people fly fished back then, but it's coming back strong these days! The quality of those ".25 cent toys" says a lot about its age!
I am guessing those toys would have been the attention-getter and the toys you could get from the machine would be slightly more ordinary.
Excellent Restoration..
Thanks for watching!
I love the restorations that you do. I believe that the yellowed plastic can be renewed with hydrogen peroxide and uv light. It's all over RUclips.
Nice job!!!!! and you can use both hands to do it it's .... amanzing !!!!
Thank you very much!
Nice instructions on how to force a keyhole. Might be useful...
Definitely!
Oh my gosh, the paint stripper you used my dad used to use too. He used to refinish furniture and preferred that over any other stripper
+Heather Richardson sounds like a smart dude! 👍🏼
Great work, wonder what it cost the customer?
Isn't there supposed to be a front faceplate over the mechanism?
Wow nice job! Have you thought about getting a powder coat system? The finish is a lot tougher than a rattle can.
Hi bro 👋👋👋very good restoration 👍👍👍and video cool 🤝🤝🤝
+Кошмар Кошмар thank you!
The rusted Bar with the items Is possible a weighted stand for one of the dogs which unglued , Usually they were magnetized .
I found out later that it was a magnet for the little dogs. They came in a set call Tricky Dogs
You need the lock picking lawyer my dear....
Or bosnianbill
Kids had far more common sense back then. So hell yes meant for kids!. I remember getting pocket knives, and lighters in machines. Nothing wrong with it. Nice work!!!
+producer73 I know right! Not sure how much common sense I had as a kid lol, but I was allowed to play with most things and I managed to survive
Pocket knife ok, but man's ring and nondescript small piece of wood?
Beautiful...
What did that take like 2 Seconds to break lock crazy.
I haven't watched full video but I can already tell it's gonna be awesome.
didn't see it actually fuctioning but great work
That was a great old fashion vending machine I didn’t know they put jewelry and you could play all day would’ve had long ranger stuff for work out for the area in there but jewelry that’s pretty good
You might be able to reverse some of the yellowing on the display piece of plastic by Retr0briting it. You can do that by submerging it in some hydrogen peroxide and leave it under a UV lamp or out in the sun for a while. It does wonders for de-yellowing plastics when restoring vintage electronics, toys, and games.
I would love to hear you explain the process as you go but wow this was fascinating regardless!
What an awesome video
Thanks!
Was that lighter fully functional or just a prop?
Nope, it was an actual lighter
Hi mate have you tried evapo rust it's great stuff i use it to restore old rusty tool and will not go back to other rust remover and converter. It will not eat the good metal like vinegar can if you forget about it and leave the items in over a week or more i left some rusty old wrenches in vinegar about 2 weeks And what I got? Out look like wood it had eaten so much of a metal away life gets in the way some times lol
Those "toys" weren't much fun! I got the lighter when I was a kid, and it did work if you added lighter fluid. But it got so hot you had to drop it or blow it out pretty quickly.
🙂
Or the ball that bounced lopsided, or the balloon that exploded in your face as soon as you tried to inflate it, or the squirt gun that cracked apart when you pulled the trigger, etc.
You did a great job. Thanks for the vid.
Thanks for watching!
I didnt think citrusstrip would work on that powder coating. You should use a sand blaster it's more fun like you did on the inside parts
I am now addicted to my sand blaster!! lol
When soaking the part in vinegar you use a white vinegar. Is that for a reason or will any vinegar do?
Is that other toy a money clip or a tie clip?
There were several other jewelry related items, so a tie clip seems more likely
Awesome! Did you consider making a copy of the Plexiglas window? Maybe you wanted it completely original, but I think that a shiny duplicate would look nice. (not a critique your work is amazing)
Back in the day, toy vending machines only cared about tempting kids with cool objects, there wasn't the modern obsession with safety. Things like fish hooks, lighters, and small knives were considered harmless, and most kids had them. In fact, the same quarter a kid might put in that vending machine could just as easily have been used to buy a pack of cigarettes from another vending machine.
Looks great, but I agree with the comments it needs the 25 cents decal all the machines when I was a child had them ranging from 1 to 25 cents.
Thanks for the video.
We say @ 22:54 that is a tiny harmonica! (What do we win?) ; )
I wish I could go back and go to the grocery store with my dad one more time and beg him for a dime nickle or dare even a quarter to get some treasure
+William Hyde lol I remember those days!
I remember seeing the lighter and always wanting it, but never got it. I used to get so mad.
lol seems like you never got the toys that were on display
Wow, a lighter. Those vending machine toys didn't mess around back then. lol!
lol I know right!
Nice job!
+Remco Dalhuisen thanks! 😎
Great restoration work! The finished project is stunning! Keep them coming! T-Wrecks
Thanks for watching!
Hi I thought of many restoration but thought of. Real nice ideas.
Back in the 1960 a department store named Topps and had a machineaking out of liquid plastic different characters from Walt Disney the two model would come together and injection from the bottom when it finished you get a still warm and said not to squeeze or to treat it rough would damage it
Really nice restoration!! Great thin blue line flag too!!
HOW DOES IT WORKS?
Lovely!
+Mary Frederickson thank you 😎
