    Matt, thanks so much for these videos on the macro lenses. I pre-ordered the 105mm on the day it was announced but 38 days later (today) I got an email telling me it was “backordered”, so I am really jealous of those among your subscribers who have received their 105’s! As a retired person with interests in landscape and macro photography, I have been using the F-mount version of the 105mm with the FTZ adapter, so I guess I can get by until I receive my new lens. This will be my fourth Z Mount lens, along with the 24-70, 14-30, and 50 (f/1.8). I also have an F-mount 70-300 AF-P so I am looking forward to a Z-mount 70-200 f/4 with 2x telextender that is more affordable than the f/2.8 version. Keep up the good work! Cheers, Andy in the USA.

    I was on the fence when these lenses were announced, but I went with the MC 50. It's super versatile - 1:1 macro, street, portrait, and I have a box of negatives to digitize so the ES-2 adapter is a bonus. I also don't have a 50 prime so it fills multiple roles for me 🙂
    That said, I do plan to add the MC 105 in the future. It's too great of a lens to pass up, from what everyone's saying. Thanks Matt!

    Always good to watch Matt. As a landscape photographer I initially thought that the 50mm, being such a featherweight, was a no brainer. But then I thought that the 105 could replace my 85 1.8 and give me a macro as well with less increase in weight than adding the 50 to the 85. So the 105 it will be ....

    I own the 50mm AF-D f/1.4 which works with the FTZ adapter but doesn't have autofocus, so I bought the 50mm MC so I would have a native Z mount 50mm with autofocus, macro ability and it is small, light and discreet for street and landscape photography. I originally thought I would go for the 105mm as I really liked the F-mount VR version of that, but the price and weight/size discouraged me. Perhaps another time. Great summation, Matt. Cheers from Toronto.

So bang for buck and doing wedding and portrait photography but a lens that I don't think I will use a lot I think this is a perfect lens in my case. Pairing well with portrait lens that I own, but also a nice option to mix in with my Z 35 1.8 and my new Z 26 2.8 that I used on a recent wedding and just loved this lens. Great food for thought here. I’m leaning toward the 50mm macro since I’m a wedding tog and ring shots I can get close for. Plus, the 105mm 1.4 on the Z6 II is incredible for portraits!! I don’t see replacing that until a Z version gets released in 2030 (joke sort of). Presuming I get the Z FC in this summer, the 50 MC will be a great addition to that walk around camera too.

    Hey Matt! Would love a video on How the Nikon Z7 ii system compares to Hasselblad H system or even the standard 6x6/7 on image quality. I know these are different and the topic of the video would be subjective, but it would be fascinating to explore optical clarity, resolution, and color rendition. I am certain the medium format is likely better but has the gap closed a bit in recent years. Is the image quality difference enough to even notice from a practical stand point.

    I would also add that for bug hunting macro photographers the minimum focusing distance can be a big deal. There will also be a difference in perspective as well as oof rendering to the benefit of the longer lens imho. I have the older 60mm f/2.8G which is still one of my favourite lenses, but I've only used it on APS-C bodies so equivalent to 90mm. I also have the Tokina 100mm but on an unstabilised body it's not very practical for hand held macro, at least in my shaky hands. It's a simpler design but optically wonderful and has manual focus clutch. So I agree that unless you need a 50mm or can't stretch the $$$, the 100mm looks like the better option. If budget is an issue consider adapting a second hand 60mm f/2.8G. Y

    Being a big Macro Fan - pre-ordered both the 105 and 50 and now have them. The new Z lenses are replacing my legacy F mount 105 and 60mm macros. After a week of using the new Z Macros, I was very pleased with the results. My only disappointment was the new Nikon Z teleconverter will not work on the 105 MC, the legacy 105 would accept a teleconverter. Otherwise, both new Macros are awesome!

There's actually a Matt Irwin inspired shot there, you'll know it when you see it and one shot that actually has me in it but you have to look REALLY close to eye ball that one.

    I still haven't bought into the Z system because I have a pretty good lineup of F mount portrait lenses between 85 mm and 135 mm which would be hard to replace. Nowadays I am considering going mirrorless and starting with this lens, mainly for portraits, because I really like this focal length, but still can't decide due to the smallish f/2.8 aperture. When there is a cheaper 85/1.8 and now also the (definitely not cheaper, but stellar) 85/1.2 available, and a 135mm (probably f/1.8) on the roadmap, there are definitely a few options to consider, but I'll probably wait a few more months.

    If/when in doubt choose the Z MC 105. It is a phenomenally good lens. It has more distance to your living macro subjects. It is a perfect portrait lens. It can stop down more than regular lenses (for depth of field).
    The Z MC 50, I would choose over other 50s if I shot a DX camera (but I don't). It would be a great portrait lens on a Z 50 or Z fc for that matter and it would have matching weight and size properties.

  • @EveningReport
    @EveningReport 3 года назад +1

    Hi Matt, thanks for another first class episode on the Z mount lens development journey. I'm working through the planning stage of a project, and I can see I have a strong use case for the 105mc. For example, I'm not sure if you know it, but there's this series on Netflix called Hinterland (located in Wales). In the intro, they use macro-shot video to convey edginess and unease in the opening minute. It really works and I'm going to use this technique in this doco project.
    Question is: does the 105mc perform equally as good up close with the Z6II as it does with the Z7II? I really love how the Z6 and Z6II both work exceptionally well capturing video in low light. And before I obtain a Z6II to complement my Z6 (for two camera set-up), I just wanted to see what you thought about the above question. Hope this makes sense. Thanks Matt, from over the ditch. Selwyn.

    • @MattIrwinPhotography
      @MattIrwinPhotography  3 года назад +1

      Hi Selwyn, thanks so much :) Great to hear from you. Indeed the Z6 II and Z7 II I would suggest have near on identical performance except for a few areas.
      I would say the Z6 II is the slightly better video camera, and the Z7 II obviously has the extra resolution in stills. This video ruclips.net/video/oAM5-b0vcjs/видео.html was shot with a mix of the Z6, Z7 and Z6 II, in a 3 cameras setup, and if it was not for my getting the colour balance wrong, you cannot tell which camera is which. Basically the difference in video between these cameras is hard to tell. And especially if the content is destined for platforms like RUclips. If memory serves me correctly, the Z6 II also has an extra stop of low light performance when focusing in the dark over the Z7/Z6/Z7II. The Z6 is already an outstanding allrounder for stills and 4K video, and the Z6 II gives more in this space, and I think there will be more to come when we see further firmware updates. One thing to consider is if you plan to shoot 4k 60P there is a crop on the senor, which can be mostly worked around with lens choice. I have not found it ever to be a problem in the last 8 months of ownership of the Z6 II. Love to hear more about what you are working on. Cheers Matt

    • @EveningReport
      @EveningReport 3 года назад +1

      @@MattIrwinPhotography Thanks so much Matt. I'll watch your latest episode (that you have linked above) and keep an eye out for your three-camera use. And thanks for that note regarding the crop when capturing 4k 60P. For this doco, I'll be capturing in 4k 24P and if for slow-mo effects I shoot after upgrade at 4k 60P it will be in relatively short bursts (that crop issue shouldn't be a problem, when converting in post).
      The doco has a working title of Growing up with our past, and explores the highs and lows of life , and life choices made, by a small group of (once) primary school class mates. Without going into more detail, I want to bring in visual elements that will work with film-festival audiences, both in small cine and online, and presenting as an edgy indy style within the doco genre. It will take a little while to do, but I'm looking forward to the project.
      Thanks very much Matt.
      Selwyn.
