Hey Everybody ! I hope you find this first look at the new Z 50mm lens useful it really has exceeded my expectations when I first saw this lens and really pleasantly surprised by its performance I think it will be a great lens for anyone who's wanting to start macro or add macro photography capabilities to their camera bag. If you have any questions let me know. As always thank you for watching ! Good bye
Thank you, I’d be interested in a comparison between the 105/2.8S and the 85/1.8S. I won’t be replacing my 50/1.8S with the 50 micro but might replace the 85mm. So would be good seeing those side by side.
Great video, as always! I'll be interested in this lens to replace the F-mount 60mm Micro that I currently use (with an FTZ) for copying slides via the ES-2. I'd be interested to know whether the ES-2 mounts to the Z MC 50mm f/2.8 without needing any additional adapters, and whether it can copy a 35mm transparency at 1:1. Many thanks!
Hello Ricci, I"m very happy that you did this review. I currently have the Nikkor MC 105/2.8 S with your samples and the water droplets, are you spritzing those plants, or is that natural dew? So, would having both just be redundant? Or, is there an advantage to adding the 50mm? I'm on the fence.
Thanks for the video. Did you ever do a look at using the Z MC 50mm with the Nikon ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter? I browsed your videos and can't see it if it is there.
When NikonUSA offered this lens for $400 as a refurbished, I got it. The ability to use it with the ES-2 was the key feature for me, but now I'm using it every day on my nature trail walks and I love it. I find a new wildflower every day. I wish my old Z7 would connect to the internet and identify the flowers I'm finding through Google Lens. Wouldn't be great if Nikon adopted Android for their camera OS.
Another great review. I got notice today that my 50mm MC is being shipped. Glad to see the metal mount and weather sealing. Optical performance is better than expected. Could you use the 62mm filter threads to attach a larger collapsible hood and still achieve macro distances? I prefer a little more hood.
I use my 200-500mm on a D500 and rarely on my Z fc. This new lens really is attractive and should draw lots of birder photographers back to Nikon or to upgrade their Nikon to mirrorless. Now we wait on a DX pro mirrorless, more efficient than the z50 or z fc.
Pre-order is already in for the 105 to replace my trusty old 105 F-mount. I love the 105vr, but shooting it on the z7ii doe show off it’s limitations at high resolution. This video is making me think I might need a 50mm also. *sigh*
Hi Ricci love your videos as always. I’m torn between the 105 and 50mm macro lens. Now I have to say I love the idea that the 105 has VR and extra function button and internal focusing ( I dont really care too much about the weight differences). My main concern is that the 50mm may actually be a little sharper although its not an “s” line lens (suprising...just basing it on what i have seen from your videos and the fact that its almost the same as the 50mm 1.8 z lens at f8 - would have loved to see how it compared with that lens at f2.8). My main concern is with regards to speed in auto focusing against the 105mm if you want to use it as a standard lens and also usability in video smoothness or any noise such as the 105 has CR and that may cause some unwanting noise. Please help me out here with the above information and if possible comparing them head to head if you had the time and the lenses. Much appreciated and keep up the excellent and hard work that you do.
Hi Ricci. As always thanks for the very informative videos. Quick Q on both macros. As you can’t use extenders on the lenses do we assume that you won’t be able to use extension tubes either? Traditionally with closer macro work you’d always manually focus, so how good is the AF at the closer focusing distances and can you in camera focus stack/ bracket with them? Thanks. David.
They can use extension tubes as they just move the lens further from the sensor just not a tele converter. I switched between both manual focus and autofocus and found I enjoyed using both the autofocus was very useful even at very close ranges especially with pin point but manual focus is still a great option and you get lots of accuracy too. Both lenses work with in camera focus shift shooting but you would need to be aware of the breathing and compensate for that in post
I recently ordered the 105, now I'm really wondering if I should switch that to the 50! Might be better suited to my product photography, and I could definitely use the film digitizer. However, it doesn't have VR, which is something I want from the 105. Definitely a conundrum - wish I could just buy both!
I'm also curious to see how well it does with portraits, street, and bokeh. It is not an S lens, but it is half the weight, over an in shorter, better than f-mount 50mm's, and it isn't going to be half as bad. ;) I expect it to be a better option than the compact primes. Just don't tell it that I'm going to use it as a street lens too!
yes, good suggestion, and it looks fantastic, if this video is anything to go by, the bokeh on the rock& snail video was like looking through frosted glass, beautiful, subject isolated perfectly and a non annoying out of focus background, be nice to compare ALL the 50's together, see what each apature gives you in terms of BOKEH, iso noise, etc. and compare the macro's too, as the 105 looks like a beauty too :-) BUT I have seen the 105 close up, it is NOT as big as it looks in these comparisons!! ( NOT as big as an S line 70-200 mm, which it looks like)- this is most likely due to the camera angle!!! (sheimflug principle, used in large format cameras; the size is different due to sensor plane angle to subject, like the rear standard tilt in a 5x4 camera, controls image size/shape).
@@RicciTalks I'm seeing a lot of magenta in horizontal high contrast edges. It is wider than correction can handle. Focus engine seems slower than my other Z lenses. While smaller than every other Z prime, it is not compact enough for the IQ over 6' IMO. It also is NOT f2.8 within 6', but it isolates well enough. I don't know if I shoot enough macro to justify the cost of this one. Having previously owned a 50f1.4 for $300 which the 50-S did not replace; for my use. Closeup images from the 24-70F4S are decent, but not macro.
There is no comparison! In my opinion the 50mm 1.8 S is five times the lens this (nikkor 50mm MC 2.8) will ever be. The 50mm 1.8 S is way, way, way sharper, better quality and although it is NOT a macro (if you have to) you can shoot very close with it.
Thankyou for making these... seriously they are a big help. Were you still going to make another video with the official versions? A lot of people would really benifit from that. Nobody breaks it down quite like you.
Awesome info, was anxiously awaiting this one 🙂 So would it be fair to say for insects / nature / wildlife, the 105 might be the better choice? And for products / food, perhaps the 50? I also need to see sharpness comparisons with lenses wide open (I know you're waiting on production models, no worries). I don't think I'd go wrong with either lens really. Thanks Ricci!
Thank you for this interesting video. It would be nice to get focus speed values (e.g. 2m to infinity) (compared to other Z lenses with the same focal length). How does this lens work with distance rings? (probably not from Nikon).
Thinking about picking up this lens for its macro abilities but may use it as a stop gap while I wait for my 24-120 so I am curious does it breath as much in the farther range in its focus (like for landscape work)??
I have this lens and would advise that if you install the 62mm filter or cap, the lens will recognize the obstruction and issue a warning/error msg to prevent damage. Tom KC3QAC
I already have the Z 50 1.8. I do shoot macros a lot and 1.8's minimum focusing distance limits that line of work. Would it make sense to own the 2.8 as well ?
I managed to get my hands on the ES2 last year after waiting several weeks on back order. Difficulty maintaining supplies of lenses is perhaps understandable given their complexity and the cost of production but Nikon has done an even worse job of maintaining stocks of accessories and I imagine it’s due in large part on their headquarter’s tight fisted management of costs (avoiding overstocking) and their focus on perhaps more profitable items. But it’s really bad for customer relations and push some to seek other solutions to Nikon’s detriment. I currently use the 60/2.8 AFS mostly for slide duplication and optically it’s perfectly fine but its manual focus leaves much to be desired especially for fine focus adjustment so hopefully this lens is much better,
I purchased this lens and it has become my favorite walk around lens. I'm keeping my 50mm 1.8, but this lens is on my Z6II most of the time. Great for pictures of the wedding rings and close ups of the makeup session. It is light and small.
Nice, tnx Ricci. Will probably get this to replace my 50 f-mount 1.8. I hope you do a test with both the 105 and 50 and use them as a portrait lens too see if they are any good at that
Thank you again Ricci! Your video was, as usual, great! I am shooting a lot of product pictures, made with steel, I was going to purchase the new 105. Now, I am wondering. I will wait for your new videos with the mass production units. And yes I agree with the comment below, you do make RUclips a better place.
Great video. I purchased the 50mm macro over the 105 simply because of the size, weight, and price. It’s great to see sample images, great performing lens, can’t wait to try mine.
Hi there, Would it be possible to hv a video of your thoughts and comparison of: Z 50mm f1.8 S with, say 12mm/24mm extensions tube vs. Z 50mm MC f2.8 About magnification ratio and quality and with how long the extension tube will be tbe best bid for 50mm f1.8 S pls?
I just love the tiny sea life footage you shot with this lens. It offers almost complete self-explanation for its use and quality. I've been drinking in commentary from all corners of the internet about this lens (I photograph retro furniture, where I need to visualize that old, sometimes worn objects have skin, character, and a past), trying to visualize and imagine its differences from Nikons 105 macro (both the Z and the F mount) and third party macro's. I keep coming back to this one. Its silly, inelegantly protruding barrel has been a show stopper for me, but that beautiful sea life footage of yours does reverse what is actually silly.
I'm waiting for your in depth testing on the new micro lens. I already have the ES-2 adapter and I have slides I want to do again with the Z7. Please, I'm waiting.
Is the "Nikon AF-S Micro NIKKOR 60mm f/2.8G ED " Lens the closest lens from Nikon to this "Nikon Z MC 50mm F2.8" Lens? If so, can you make a video comparing the two please as you did for the Z105 and the F105?
Thanks for this video. I was hoping you would do a review. I am on the list for this one. I will use this as a macro and a regular 50mm. I mostly likely will end up with the 105 too. Anyways, the subjects for your images made me feel more like I made the right choice.
Thanks for the video, really interesting. Look forward to your 105mm comparison. Convinced myself that it’s 105mm only but the light weight versatility of this lens is very appealing.
I rented the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 a while back. Excellent sharpness, but a disconcerting lag when turning the focus ring until the lens actually moved the optics. This made manual focusing very tedious. Hope you will look at this when doing the production copy review. (I was also disappointed with the 1.8's minimum focus distance, so hoping this 'micro' version does not suffer this lag.)
Great vid as always Ricci!!’ I say these are better subjects compared to the 105 video lol. Although some of the pics triggered my trypophobia! Fun to watch tho im dead set on the 105 anway. Cant wait for it to arrive. No delays for first day pre orders pls lol
@@RicciTalks awesome then! Ordered it from amazon. Im very excited. Would u say it can replace the 85 for portraits? Im no professional so i wanna choose between the two. Ive had the viltrox but i sent it back. I originally wanted the 85 1.8s but this was announced…
Hmm it’s a tough call. I think if you like macro and do some portraits then yeh the 105 is the way to go…. For portraits the 85mm is amazing but obviously doesn’t do the macro side of things
@@RicciTalks yes, it is hard choice, I went with a 105 f2.8 for my D700 & D610, the Ai-s manual apature ring version, fantastic, use it in preference to the 85 end of the 24-85mm f4-5.6 G zoom any day, esp. for landscape/archatecture, car, train & boats too (detail closeup shots); bokeh gets the win, every time!! and also the extra reach it gives, no need to get out a 70-200 ( if you are NOT a wildlife photographer, that is), that is why I ordered the 105, myself; and it is also a cheaper way of getting telephoto lens focal range, $1,700AUD or so pre-order, compared with $3,500AUD for the 70-200 f2.8 S lens!!- and no need for a tripod or gimble head!!!! ( ibis+vr in lens) :-))
Looks really nice and seashelves and snails look big. But I think I am going to keep focused on Z105mm. I see you test focus AF-S which is very fast. It is out of this topic, even if we need it for macro, but I recently purchased a Z 35mm F/1.8 and made "proxi photo" at 40cm-120cm at F/3.2 typ and was very surprised making focus on flowers, ... that the AF-S single point (not pin) beep and becomes green at half press while it was out of focus. AF-C single point OK tracking anything (bee, flower,...); i was using a UV filter Kenko PRO1D (30usd) and results seem better with Hoya HDX (80usd) and better without any filter. Not sure 100%. I am aware at 40cm distance, at 35mm F/3.2 depth of filed is 4cm (much more at 120cm) but no wind and, i don't complain about focus but about the fact that Z6ii thinks it is in focus. sometimes half pressing a second time focus perfectly. to be clear, i don't take photo, i half press. photo is similar result.
Thanks Ricci, hopefully the full production units will be same or better than those you have reviewed (to date). I’m already on the wait list at Grays for both lenses when they have stock. Impressed with the image quality seen on your video, so probably looking forward more to the 50 than the 105 TBH. Keep the video’s coming, and see you later on the Nikon After School Club on ZOOM.
Love your video, but I don’t believe that the camera makes the final picture, I see all these so called photographers with the latest gear, spending thousands of dollars , thinking that the better the camera the better the photos, well let’s say these are the ppl that the manufacturers what because I achieved the same if not better with my F2SB back when you had to know how to take a photo and not rely on the camera doing the work for you. Trust me I have seen many a photo taken with cheap cameras that would blow your mind. So remember it’s not the camera it’s your skill of the craft. Keep up the great reviews.
like and subscribed, so sorry should subscribe earlier. been watching your video for a few months now. just realize that I haven't subscribed to your channel. thumbs up for honest review
@@RicciTalks besides that, the pics look amazing! And on a side note, the footage showing the 50mm has such a creamyyyy defocus, I usually don't care much about the bokeh visual but that really took my attention
Great video Ricci, the puffin photo was outstanding! I owned the 105mm f mount macro for years and never used it. Beyond a few flower photos. Only sold it once I upgraded all my gear to Z mount got a pretty penny for it too!
I'm glad that Nikon has priced these lenses appropriately. They very well could have made the 50mm macro an $800 lens and the 105mm a $1400 lens, but they didn't, and that's a good thing. I think with the exception of a few lenses (like the 70-200 Z and the 50 1.8 Z) the rest of the lenses are appropriately priced in the system. The 50 1.8 (regular, not the macro lens) I would say is probably an exception because it is one of Nikon's sharpest lenses to date, so in a way, I think it does deserve the $600 price tag because of its image quality. certainly better than the 50 1.8G for $200 (although that lens is a good value regardless for DSLR shooters).
I personally thought the 50mm looked a tab sharper. Hopefully I get the 105mm in the first preorder shipment. If I didn't already own the 50mm 1.8 S I would have done some more thinking on which to get.
@@LarssGD Hyperfocal distance matters less the larger the reproduction ratio, once you pass 1:50 or so it's pretty much irrelevant for depth of field, which is then only determined by the f-stop.
Thanks for your very informative post. Yes, I purchased it and just 4 days later I want to return it. I am very disappointed with this lens. But Nikon won't take it back since I opened the box. That is the last lens I buy from Nikon, Amazon here I come.
Thank you for posting. All things be equal… to sacrifice 1 stop and $50 to gain macro I will jump for any day…. Assuming that the other apertures are apples vs apples like I think it will likely be.
Thank you for the 50mm 2.8 first look! I do wish that could do a side by side comparison with the F 60mm 2.8 Macro. I took the leap withe Z105mm 2.8 even though I have the F version. I am first on the list at my local distributor. I use the 60mm Macro under controlled conditions and love the results, it will be the last F mount that own and will probably Marry it to the FTZ adaptor. Please get you Hands on the 60mm and do the comparison with the new Z mount. I hope that they are close. So far every Z mount lens has been worth the cost of replacing my F mount lenses!. The Z lenses that I currently own are the, 20mm 2;8; 35mm 2.8; 85mm 2.8; 24mm-70mm 2.8; & 70mm-200mm 2.8 W/ TC-1.4. They are mid blowing! Thanks for the great video as usual.
I wish they had made the 40mm compact a Micro AND S lens with two buttons. I'd get that much more use out of it. I'd be fine with a larger diameter lens as they are better for manual focusing. I still think lenses with tiny glass openings are ugly. I'm replacing my 35-S with the 50MC. As good as the 24-70F4S is at f4 35mm, I couldn't justify the 35-S (or any z prime) not offering a size benefit as the f-mounts did (especially the 50f1.4G, one of my favorite Nikon lenses btw!) I'm all about smaller size and close focusing these days. That is why I don't own a fast telephoto zoom (getting by with the 70-300E.) Canon's 70-200f4 looks promising, and I hope Nikon matches it SOON. I'm thinking the 50MC will still be better than the 50f1.4G and compact enough. I had the 105 f-mount and didn't use it as much as I should have.
Is that "MADE IN CHINA" on the front of the lens or the lens hood or what? I have no problem that it's made in China, but if it looked like that when I took it out of the box, the first thing I'd do is search the web to see if it was counterfeit. Especially when it says "Nikon" instead of "Nikkor".

Great suggestion Lars, I was thinking of doing the same. Would be wonderful to see Ricci's comparison.
Very nice review, thanks 🙏 a lot for your work 😊👍🙋♂️
Thank you again Ricci!
Hi there,
Would it be possible to hv a video of your thoughts and comparison of:
Z 50mm f1.8 S with, say 12mm/24mm extensions tube vs.
Z 50mm MC f2.8
About magnification ratio and quality and with how long the extension tube will be tbe best bid for 50mm f1.8 S pls?
For street photography, would you say this is as good as the 1.8? Or would it be worth owning both?
I would personally prefer the 1.8 for street photography
But if u want to do street and macro then the 2.8 is a much better choice
I really want to get one of these as well for converting 35mm slides - as well as shooting macro and other general subjects.
Lovely demo and presentation 👌
Thanks for this video. I was hoping you would do a review. I am on the list for this one. I will use this as a macro and a regular 50mm. I mostly likely will end up with the 105 too. Anyways, the subjects for your images made me feel more like I made the right choice.
Great to hear !
@@RicciTalks id love to see this 50mm macro lens with the 8K Z8 video as it looks insane just with the Z6
Thanks for the video, really interesting. Look forward to your 105mm comparison. Convinced myself that it’s 105mm only but the light weight versatility of this lens is very appealing.
One one hand, this looks like a really interesting lens. On the other hand, do I *really* need a 5th 50mm lens?
Time to sell an old one!
The first stock is already shipping to retailers so as long ur in the first few orders you should be good
@@RicciTalks awesome then!
Thank you for your good work.
Thank you for watching it
Looks really nice and seashelves and snails look big.
May I ask what you think of it so far?
Love your video, but I don’t believe that the camera makes the final picture, I see all these so called photographers with the latest gear, spending thousands of dollars , thinking that the better the camera the better the photos, well let’s say these are the ppl that the manufacturers what because I achieved the same if not better with my F2SB back when you had to know how to take a photo and not rely on the camera doing the work for you. Trust me I have seen many a photo taken with cheap cameras that would blow your mind. So remember it’s not the camera it’s your skill of the craft. Keep up the great reviews.
like and subscribed, so sorry should subscribe earlier. been watching your video for a few months now. just realize that I haven't subscribed to your channel. thumbs up for honest review
im not fond of the design. why not similiar with 105 but wo screen?
Hello Ricci, Great to see and here you with the
Always excellent video
Thank you for watching
I’m still waiting on my 105 been 3 months but thinking of grabbing this one as well
Does F goes up to 25?
Does R1C1 flash attatch to it?
I see there is a little bit of fringing with the 50mm, but it's really a negligible amount, it was visible on the watch shots
Yep I certainly noticed it too that’s what I think will be the big difference as I never saw any fringing on the 105
@@RicciTalks besides that, the pics look amazing!
And on a side note, the footage showing the 50mm has such a creamyyyy defocus, I usually don't care much about the bokeh visual but that really took my attention
Yes it works well with es-2 which fits into outer thread 😀
I just ordered mine. My old VR 105 is showing its age on the z6II
Would love to see what that lens does on the Z FC.
I personally thought the 50mm looked a tab sharper. Hopefully I get the 105mm in the first preorder shipment. If I didn't already own the 50mm 1.8 S I would have done some more thinking on which to get.
I was thinking that might be due to the smaller hyperfocal distance, some elements protrude out of the 105's.
@@LarssGD Hyperfocal distance matters less the larger the reproduction ratio, once you pass 1:50 or so it's pretty much irrelevant for depth of field, which is then only determined by the f-stop.
Healthy looking kalanchoe. good work.
re the ES-2 at 5:00 adaptor. According to Nikon USA you CAN se this with the MC50mm but not with the MC105mm
Is that right? Very interesting, I'll have to look into that, it would turn it into a x2 micro lens then? did you get it?
Oops I ment 1,8 for the 20mm,35mm, & 85mm!! Interruptions......
I don’t currently have access to a 60mm but I’ll see if I can acquire one
ruclips.net/video/1SFbn8WW2UQ/видео.html Here's a comparison with the F 60mm macro in the meantime.
The 60mm 2.8G is a great lens! Better than the F mount 105 for sure
@@RicciTalks Thanks. JHM
Yeh the 50mm 2.8 will be better than the 50 1.4
Unless you like shooting at 1.4 obviously
AF speed is slow.. but its accurate at least.
Instant click
Hopefully you don’t instantly click off 🤣
@@RicciTalks 😂 still watching, haven't even finished the video yet
Plastic mount is a shame for any mirrorless camera. Especially own brand.
What?
@@tweed0929 I meant plastic mount haha
This lens has metal mount. You can see it at 3:34 ruclips.net/video/X0slFDy3NTs/видео.html
the music is too loud.
focus breathing looks terrible, guess the production unit will perform the same. deal breaker for me
They keep pushing out these designs with vulnerable looking front groups though.
It’s the back of the lens hood
I am sorry you are being greedy in the commercials, 12 seconds without the option to stop 🛑
MADE IN CHINA emblazoned on the front of the lens is enough to put me off. The fact that it’s made in China would stop me buying it.
