Thanks for another great and enthusiastic review Matt, big change for me , for the last year and a half or so. A great change from all the negativity about Nikon, keep up the good work.
@@ytr8989 Absolutely nothing, in fact it is my favorite lens ever. That being said, I shoot a lot of nature photography and my go to is a 85 so I can get up close of various details. But I can't get too close with the 85 which is why I think the 105 might be perfect for me
Aperture of f/4.5 at 1:1 closest focusing distance ... lenses have their focal length and widest aperture specified at infinity. If a lens focuses closer by than infinity by being shifted away from sensor/film completely (the standard way) then its focal length changes and in fact its widest aperture too. This is laws of physics an mathematics. 105mm with f/2.8 means that the diameter of the widest aperture at infinity is 105/2.8=37.5. If this lens has a widest aperture of f/4.5 at 1:1 closest focusing distance, then its focal length has become 37.5*4.5=168.75 mm. This applies to all lenses that do not zoom and do not prevent focus breathing. Note that any "prime" lens that controls focus breathing in fact, optically is a zoom lens. Nikon showing what really happens is interesting and very correct in the sense of politically correct or PC - make that photographically correct. It e.g. means that you can use your handheld spot meter and do not need to worry about any correction for lens extension - just set the camera and shoot.
A year ago RUclips was awash with the usual talking heads moaning about Nikon and gleefully predicting its imminent demise (with corresponding 1000s of hits and comments which = revenue for the influencers who like to hate camera brands). A year later and Nikon has great camera bodies and some of the best lenses ever released. Pretty impressive stuff.
Am I the only one that started watching the video at 360p? And then thinking the lens really doesn't look that sharp. Going to 4k certainly helped! I have the older 105 afs vr lens and am so jealous. Probably never go mirrorless though. To expensive!
I love that lens Matt. Thank you for your review. I am waiting to see if I can pick this up at a lower price. Our current price here in Canada is $1300. Keep on making those videos. Love them . 👍😊 Sandra Shore - Milton Ontario 🇨🇦
Great Video Matt >> My Z System savings Teabag is empty >> waiting for a camera next to upgrade the Z7 ..now you do this to me >> Want to start Table Top Photos in retirement and this 105 WOw what a perfect fit , not to mention Botany Macro
Hi Matt, wondering if instead of desaturating the masked area you could get better results by using the color tab and target just the purple tones, that way other colors remain
Yeah for sure Rayner. That is another great method. I have found when there is a lot of purple fringing sometimes that method won’t catch it all. I think there is probably a video in showing various methods. 👍😀Cheers Matt
Just picked my copy up yesterday. Impressed so far with iQ. The focus is a little slow and prone to hunting close up, but maybe I've been spoiled by the 70-200 2.8 which I've been using a lot recently. I'll be using the 105 a lot more in the coming days.
Yeah Ray, the closer it gets to 1.1 ratio, the more it seems to slow down, which makes sense to me as the closer you get to your subject, the more minor focus change makes a big difference, I think it is a good plan ... still more playing to do, but this will certainly be my close up product shot lens and be in the portrait studio, and I just love how light it is. Hope you are doing well :) Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography Yes, it's my understanding that this behaviour is a common macro trait. It is so lighweightt. Used it yesterday for some portraits. Excellent results.
Howdy Matt, I’m waiting for mine. Been using the AF-S version with FTZ adapter and that combo is, to say the least, not ideal for close-up handheld work - doable, but not ideal. I must drop by the next time I’m in the Melbourne area. Cheers from sunny BC🇨🇦
@@MattIrwinPhotography Thanks, Matt. Nothing much yet, only some pet rabbit shots and a photo stack shot of my wife's orchid. I did do a bokeh comparison of sorts with the 105 f1.4E and to be honest, it was almost impossible to tell one from the other. How do I send you a link privately?
Hello Matt, These images look amazing. Just two things I was thinking One, I know a chap called Ricky Talks had a 105mm mc lens and that was a pre-production lens is this? Two I hear that Nikon soon will release new firmware for both this lens and the MC 50mm did they let you have a beta copy with the lens you had to try? Great review honest and done with passion. Thank you. Keep well, keep safe and be happy.
Great question John, to the best of my understanding it was a production lens. I was told nothing different :) So that is completely my expectation. I have now bought my own copy, so I am expecting it to be much the same, within manufacturing tolerances :) Cheers sir, Matt :)
@@MattIrwinPhotography Will let you know for sure, also picked up a 256gb Pergear Cfexpress card with reader and absolutely love it, not as Fast as my Sony Tough card but is great for non burst and good for continuous low, Thankyou Matt :)
got my 105 mc z last thursday. had a portrait shooting with it last friday. using a z6II this lens was... amazing. focus nails to 100% in high speed. using actual Lr Version this is the first Time i had to decrease Lr-Standard sharpening values.
Great review of the Z105mm, thanks Matt. I am intereseted in doing moving portrait shots (parade, etc.) Can you tell me, if the AF is quick enough for this kind of shots? With my Z50mm 1,8 I can do them. But from my memories of Makro lenses, they have been all a little bit slowly in AF. Thanks in advance for your answer. Best regard
Pre-ordered mine in the UK last Monday, hoping it won’t be too long in coming.I think this will be another game changer, I intend to explore the possibilities of ‘street macro’ for one thing. Next up for me will be the 200-600 I think, my guess is that will come next with the 24-105 and 100-400, with the 400, 600 and 85 F1.2 coming with the Z9 at the end of the year
I haven't bought any lens or cameras apart from this one GoPro Hero 7, with your scooter you can wear it while you travel, Matt. !05mm would be my favourite thing to have, I hope I get one soon.
Great vid Matt and thanks for sharing your field test results with us, amazing imagery straight out of camera in most instances. You've definitely cemented this to my bucket list of Z mount lens's to procure and to replace my old F mount 105, which was just OK.
Thank you for your review. I preordered my copy and now I am even more eager to receive it. That fishing line photo is incredible! How do you see this lens fitting in to what you do? You have so many great options (50 1.2) how will you decide what to pick up and use? I am still eager to hear your thoughts on the TC 2.0 adapter. So many great lenses…so little time! I agree with you about the intangible painterly quality…
Fantastic question Karen, yes the 70-200 / tC 2.0 review keeps getting side-lined I am sorry, I will make a concerted push now all the MC lens business is calming down. :) As for deciding which lens, sometimes I say to myself, 'ok I am going to see what I can do with this lens today', and often when I do that I will take 2 or 3 cameras, and leave the single lens on the front of each, like I did with this video. Since about 2007/8/9 I have always owned 2 bodies with the same pixel count, so when working with a client, or with my own shoots, I could get exactly the same pixel results regardless of the lens. As the Z mount matures, I will endeavour to probably round out the kit with 2 x 7(ii) (stills) and 1 x Z6ii (mostly for video), and that will be my street / client setup. As to where this lens fits for me. It will appear in the portrait bag, and most definitely in the video bag, as it is perfect for all the close up product shots. And really, and as has been suggested in these comments I need to see how the Z 70-200 2.8 and the Z 105 2.8 compare optically ... so it will get a run for street scape, like all my other primes do :) Hope that all makes sense. Are you considering this lens? Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography thanks for taking the time to answer and share your thinking. Yes I ordered the 105 right away and can’t wait. I have Z6ii and z7ii and like the idea of shooting w 2 cameras. I get dust and the fewer times I change lenses the better. I wish Nikon had a way to protect sensor during lens changes. I mostly shoot portraits so I’d love to see a comparison on 70-200 and 105. Even throw in 85 1.8 for) good measure (bokeh comparison). I’m debating getting the 85 1.8 or holding out for 85 1.2. I do have 70-200 and it is my studio workhorse. I’d love to have compact tc 2.0 reach but heard it slows focus and degrades quality a bit that is why I’d like your input. Heard great things about tc 1.4. I’m in love w my z cameras and totally agree there is something magical about how it renders images.💕
@@MattIrwinPhotography I am playing with it now. The guy at the shop told me they only received a single unit! I was lucky to have it as I already paid the deposit for the lens. 😄 First impression: It is much lighter than I imagined for a lens of such size. I took a few sample shots. By just looking at the image on the LCD, I was amazed! It is exciting times ahead.
Nice video as always, Matt! As a landscape and product photographer, since this lens only existed on their roadmap when I got into the Nikon Z System, I use the Laowa 105 f/2.8 Ultra-Macro lens on the Z7. While the Laowa has proven to be ultra-sharp indeed, my big issue with it has been the extremely short focus throw, making it very tedious to acquire pinpoint focus! I'm thinking that this Nikkor MC Micro S has a much better/longer focus throw for easier, more accurate manual focusing? Also, would you know exactly how much sharper is it than the Laowa 105? I'd be most interested in a side-by-side image comparison. Thank you!
Great video as always, I hope your own one was delivered on time. Frustratingly my local store were promised three by Nikon UK (I was third on the list so expecting mine in the first batch) but they only got one 😢
Oliver I am so sorry to hear that ... my guess is Nikon made 10,000 of these in the first run based on the serial on my lens, and if we think about how many camera shops there are all over the world, it probably means they are only going to get 1 or 2, I reserved mine with the store manager directly, straight after announcement, if you don't know the manager, get to know them ... :)
Yes, I should have spoken before the announcement, I have been using them for about 25 years so know them very well. Unfortunately the announcement was in the middle of the night here so I had to pre order online before they opened 🤔
You mention $999 US did you order online ? Yes I’m getting one soon too !!! I hope … Also the Segway Max scooter too !!! Are we twins or what ? Love your landscapes so much … did you get around ok on the scooter … no probs with the law ???
Hi Chris, I am sorry I have not done that, macro is not my native shooting style. Now i have purchased my own copy, I can slow down a little and experiment with some of the more detailed elements and nuances of the lens :) Cheers Matt
Great video, thanks for posting it. I purchase the 50mm MC 2.8 version and am very, very disappointed with it. This 105 looks like the way to go. Thanks for posting your video.
@@MattIrwinPhotography It looks and feels CHEAP! It is not sharp corner to corner and when using macro you almost have to be in contact with (almost touch) your subject. I'm sorry, I was disappointed with it. Perhaps because I was comparing with my other Z prime lenses???
Whoot, just received my 105 mc..... cannot wait to start shoot little bugs and make them look like monsters from Creature Double Feature. love the lens so far. Thanks Mat for the video.
Hi Matt, I'm one of those amateur amateur photograpers (that's deliberate not a stammer) who has way more money to spend than talent. I've a D850 and amongst others, a AF-S Micro Nikkor 105 1:2.8 ED. I love both. Do you have experience with this lens and if so how do you rate it against the MC 105?
I took my new Nikon 105mm 2.8 S Macro lens with my Z6II for a "test drive" at my local botanic gardens. It is a stellar lens which creates gorgeous images. I did run across something unusual though. On Custom Function d5 (shutter type) on my Z6II I couldn't choose "Mechanical Shutter" with this lens, only "Auto" or "Front curtain shutter". I called Nikon USA tech support and was told that this wasn't a defect and that this lens was designed this way. This isn't a problem since this lens was designed for closeup photography, product photography and portraits anyway. Just for your information.
@@MattIrwinPhotography The only reason to use the mechanical shutter is for shutter speeds faster than around 1/2000th of a second to prevent rolling shutter and banding in dark environments, especially in artificial light, using electronic front curtain shutter. Perhaps in Auto shutter mode this camera and lens combo is programmed to figure this out. A cool feature on the 105 macro is that the focus distance limiter switch is set for close focusing rather than distance like on many zoom and telephoto lenses. These prevents focus hunting when using closeup macro mode. I am sure that this lens can be used for action photography, but my guess is that Nikon designed this lens primarily for macro, portrait and product photography. The Z mount 105mm macro wipes the floor with image quality over the older F mount 105mm VR version (which I sold) and the in body VR is at least 1 1/2 stops better as well. This is an exceptional lens!
Excellent, just the review I wanted to see. I have the old D version and it’s not suitable for landscapes, at least my copy is very soft at infinity. This makes it very versatile.
If you're not yet into the Z system the AF-S version is a big improvement over your model. Plus, the AF is internal so you don't have the lens extending when focusing close
I am so sorry Uwe, I don't own any F mount macro lenses ... I think if you are happy and your gear is giving you what you need, then you don't need to update yet :) Cheers matt
Interesting video. This 105 doesn't fit in my small and portable approach at all yet I'm sure I will get it at one point in the future - simply because I love primes, I do some macro at times, it seems to be an excellent short telephoto lens with its useful AF speed (unlike the AF-S version which was too slow), and it sits at a great price point. It's rather one of these "I want it" because it's a great lens than really a need for my use case, but at that price point, yes, I will get one.
Making it more difficult to avoid the Z mount lenses going forward. Have to be the Z mount version of the D5/D6 and I will switch to mirrorless Z mount cameras.
Save rather for the 70-200 S and I got the 1.4 Convertor and I get 420 F4 on DX and 280 F4 on FX ..the 100-400 will be f5.6 no doubt and I get a 70-200 f2.8 Full frame and 300 f2.8 on DX >> must admit I loved the 80-400 F lens on my D850
Great suggestion Paul :). Mad, based on the Canon www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1092632-REG/canon_9524b002_ef_100_400mm_f_4_5_5_6l_is.html , at $2399 and the Sony at the same price www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1333230-REG/sony_sel100400gm_fe_100_400mm_f_4_5_5_6_gm.html , I think Nikon will land in the same place give or take 10% so it could be $2200, but I don't think it will be more than Sony and Canon.
@@Mr09260 as always. It depends on your usecase. If you need a 400mm on your FX body, there is no reason at all to buy a 70-200mm lens. For me as a wildlife photographer, focal length is critical over a the aperture. Using a 200-500mm with a 1.4x TC (with f8 in that configuration) is preferred over using my 300mm f4 in 70% of all cases. If you can get closer to your subject. Go for the lens with the bigger aperture. If not... you have to take what gives you the best image, and that usually means a lens with a narrower aperture.
There's a theory that if a macro is corrected for close focus it's infinity focus is not that great? And if it is compromised for infinity focus the close focus suffers a little? This lens seems to deny this theory, i.e its great for close and infinity focus?
The 105 Micro Nikkor is legend no matter what version of it you have. The only lens that might be better is the manual focus AIS 55mm micro nikkor (still made to this day.)
Complain about lack of sunlight due to the time of year? Melbourne is 37.8 degrees from the equator. Lisbon is at 38.7, New York at 40.7, Quebec City at 46.8, Amsterdam at 52.4, Helsinki at 60.2 and Reykjavik at 64.1. On the Southern Hemisphere, you need to go to between Ushuaia and Coronation Island latitudes for that. Farther from the equator - longer summer days and slower transitions between light and dark at that. Well, the summer solstice was a couple days ago, so it gets better for you again.
I would love to live in the countries of the all day day. It was not the time of day, it was the fact that we have had non stop clouds for about 3 weeks, the sun is there, we just never see it. :)

Great video Matt! Im looking for this lense right now actually.. little note, I'm pretty sure the macro was of a plain wasp in stead of a bumblebee😊
Great video - showing a great lens. Got mine arriving tomorrow 😁
I would love to hear what you think Ole. 👍🛴
Love them . 👍😊

More to come Paul. :) Photography and filmmaking, my two favourite things :). Cheers Matt

Incredible! Really hope to get my copy next week.
On my list thanks for the review, i always wanted a lens for detailed shots and this and the 105 range is spot on.
Great Video Matt >> My Z System savings Teabag is empty >> waiting for a camera next to upgrade the Z7 ..now you do this to me >> Want to start Table Top Photos in retirement and this 105 WOw what a perfect fit , not to mention Botany Macro
beautifull images! i do want to get a copy of that lens 😀
Thanks so much Obed, yep it is a lovely prime :) Cheers Matt
Hi Matt, wondering if instead of desaturating the masked area you could get better results by using the color tab and target just the purple tones, that way other colors remain
Yeah for sure Rayner. That is another great method. I have found when there is a lot of purple fringing sometimes that method won’t catch it all. I think there is probably a video in showing various methods. 👍😀Cheers Matt
Thanks for sharing...yes the results are amazing..I do not own this lens but now I am considering buying...ch
Hi Matt. I'd love to see how this lens performs on the Z50 dx camera for both macro and portraits/street etc.
Another great review as usual, Matt. I received mine on Friday and it is a stunning lens as you have said.
Great to hear Lance, would love to see some images if you have them posted anywhere :) Cheers Matt
Good morning, great video thank You... ... A woud appreciate a suggestion... Having z50... Which MC lens You suggest? 50mm or 105mm?
Great content Matt, can't wait to receive mine, have been waiting for this lens for ages, now just need to learn my Z7 focus shifting functionality !!
Awesome, I would love to hear how you go :) Cheers Matt
Best regard
It looks like Nikon will be solving the world kidney shortage with the demand for this lens.
Sadly my kidneys are so old that no one will want them
Certainly, my half kidney would not cover the cost.
YEAH CK, the first vid I made about the scooter I used the Go Pro, I will be using it more :) Cheers Matt ruclips.net/video/6aH6zVKCjmY/видео.html
do you tend to use flash when shooting macro with this lens? For example the shot with the bee on the flower?
Great vid Matt and thanks for sharing your field test results with us, amazing imagery straight out of camera in most instances. You've definitely cemented this to my bucket list of Z mount lens's to procure and to replace my old F mount 105, which was just OK.
The raws are stunning. They're from the z7, correct?
Oh! Could you show how the capture clip is mounted? On your Lowepro bag? The straps are too wide on my Protactic… :(
Yes I will make a video about the bag setup :) I am really enjoying it :) Cheers Matt
Christopher Frost just reviewed this lens. He said "this is the best macro lens I have ever tested".
As for deciding which lens, sometimes I say to myself, 'ok I am going to see what I can do with this lens today', and often when I do that I will take 2 or 3 cameras, and leave the single lens on the front of each, like I did with this video.
I am going to the camera shop to collect mine today! 🙂
Awesome, please let me know what you think :) Cheers Matt
@@MattIrwinPhotography I am playing with it now. The guy at the shop told me they only received a single unit! I was lucky to have it as I already paid the deposit for the lens. 😄
First impression: It is much lighter than I imagined for a lens of such size.
Thank you!
Have you tried focus stacking with macros with this lens?
Compared to the 70-200 Z at 105 mm, how is it? Should I buy it if I own the 70-200?
We are editing a video about that now Sorin :) Coming soon :). Cheers Matt
Yeah, going to faff around with more reviews but I know this is going in my basket!
Yeah I always love to see as much as I can on something before I buy it, so makes perfect sense. Take care Terry, cheers Matt
You mention $999 US did you order online ? Yes I’m getting one soon too !!! I hope … Also the Segway Max scooter too !!! Are we twins or what ? Love your landscapes so much … did you get around ok on the scooter … no probs with the law ???
Matt, how does it breathe please, have you tested that re for focus stacking in a macro environment
Hi Chris, I am sorry I have not done that, macro is not my native shooting style. Now i have purchased my own copy, I can slow down a little and experiment with some of the more detailed elements and nuances of the lens :) Cheers Matt

Hi I like to know what picture profile do you use that your pictures have beautiful rendering or can you make videos how do you set your camera z7ii
I ordered mine the day it was announced. It's still on back order though. I hope it comes quicker then the 70-200 did.
Who did your order through? 😀
Great video, thanks for posting it.
I purchase the 50mm MC 2.8 version and am very, very disappointed with it.
This 105 looks like the way to go.
Thanks for posting your video.
Cheers Riberto, what don't you like about the 50mm?
@@MattIrwinPhotography It looks and feels CHEAP! It is not sharp corner to corner and when using macro you almost have to be in contact with (almost touch) your subject.
I'm sorry, I was disappointed with it. Perhaps because I was comparing with my other Z prime lenses???
Great review, mate!
Seems like a better all-around lens than the Z 85 1.8.
I think that is my thinking Britton, for a little more, you get a lot more ... :)
How would you compare the quality of image of this lens to the Nikkor Z 50mm 1.8?
Whoot, just received my 105 mc..... cannot wait to start shoot little bugs and make them look like monsters from Creature Double Feature. love the lens so far. Thanks Mat for the video.
Hi Matt, I'm one of those amateur amateur photograpers (that's deliberate not a stammer) who has way more money to spend than talent. I've a D850 and amongst others, a AF-S Micro Nikkor 105 1:2.8 ED. I love both. Do you have experience with this lens and if so how do you rate it against the MC 105?
Do you think it’s worth getting this lens or the 70-200?
Thanks for sharing Stan, what is the implication of not being able to choose mechanical shutter ... vs Auto? Cheers Matt :)
@@stanobert3475 Thanks for sharing Stan, good to know. Yes optically it is a stellar lens :) Cheers Matt
Excellent, just the review I wanted to see. I have the old D version and it’s not suitable for landscapes, at least my copy is very soft at infinity. This makes it very versatile.
Indeed, from these images captured, this lens is just so sharp, up close or far far away ... eye watering really :)
If you're not yet into the Z system the AF-S version is a big improvement over your model. Plus, the AF is internal so you don't have the lens extending when focusing close
I have the AFD version and it is superb, you might have a poor copy. The only reason for me to get the new lens is reduced CA in specular highlights.
Why not comparing with the "old" FX lenses? I'm using the D750 and the "very old" 105 2.8D micro lens. Why should I update?
I am so sorry Uwe, I don't own any F mount macro lenses ... I think if you are happy and your gear is giving you what you need, then you don't need to update yet :) Cheers matt
You are giving me GAS.
Well poop. I'm still on back order and super keen to get my paws on one. :)
In the US I was told they're shipping late June into early July (at least B&H Photo's estimate)
@@csc-photo That jives with what I've heard too.
Don't desaturate everything, go into the colour editor & just desaturate the purple - fringing simply disappears
Another great suggestion Ian. Thanks for sharing. 😀 cheers Matt
Ordered one, Thanks, my friend for helping spend my money. Lol
I'm probably being a bit slow here, but how does the aperture value (15:42) determine the magnification ratio?
Making it more difficult to avoid the Z mount lenses going forward. Have to be the Z mount version of the D5/D6 and I will switch to mirrorless Z mount cameras.
van someone explain the expression bee's knees?
I have it also now
Please Matt, the link to the Lowepro Backpack....
Hi Jonathan, here is a link to the pac :) I will pop it in the show notes :) amzn.to/3vS9ujO
I have a video coming up on my Loewpro load-out next week :)
I'm hoping the 100-400mm will come in under $2000.
@@Mr09260 Great idea! 😎 Can I assign any button to go into DX mode?
@@MattIrwinPhotography Okay, I'll wait and see. 😎
