I believe that being able to distinguish what drum sounds, bass sounds, midrange sounds, etc., complement each other well is perhaps the most important key point that distinguishes amateur and professional composers.
@@grunntalll Well, I believe it's important to understand the unique sounds of each instrument within different genres. So, I'm studying the tonal range, spatial quality, and whether each sound has a sharp finish or a smooth fade for drums, bass, strings, synths, and other instruments by genre. My method of studying includes analyzing, for instance, how house music typically uses short, powerful drum kicks with impact in the sub-bass range below 60 Hz. This creates a groove using a synth bass with enough length to avoid interfering with the sub-bass range. I try to listen to professional tracks while examining these details. The most effective way would be to open the original project files of the professionals I admire and study the effects, routing, and sounds they use firsthand. However, it's challenging to access original project files from professional producers. For beginners and amateurs like myself, I believe the best approach to learning the characteristics and compatibility of each instrument is through 'instrument analysis by genre.' The reason pop songs on the Billboard Top 100 tend to use realistic instruments(guitar, violin, cello, bass, etc., which can be easily visualized as real-world instruments) and piano are frequently the main instruments. Drums also tend to consist of realistic, live-playable instruments. The reason pop songs on the Billboard Top 100 tend to use realistic instruments across frequency ranges is likely because these combinations are part of the 'harmony in popular pop music' that audiences favor. In fact, even a small change in a pop song-such as removing low frequencies from an instrument or replacing the drum kit-can dramatically alter the mood and make it feel different, sometimes even uncharacteristic of the genre. As a developing producer, I believe that until I reach the level where I can confidently experiment with various changes, carefully analyzing popular songs or the genre I want to create is the best way to study the 'harmonious spatial quality, structure, frequency range, and length' of each instrument, as I described above. I'm building my skills gradually with this approach.") across frequency ranges is likely because these combinations are part of the 'harmony in popular pop music' that audiences favor.

Ethan, you've quickly become one of my top RUclips producers. Do you have any advice on overcoming option paralysis when it comes to producing/writing music? Whenever I set down to write or produce I always find myself digging through an endless library of sounds, chord progressions, sometimes I can't seem to set myself on a tempo either. Even when it comes to trying to recreate popular tracks, I can't just stick to one. What is the best way you've found to set yourself on an and see it through? Thank you for blessing us with your content.
thanks for the encouragement! that's a great question! for me it helps to have a reference, and stick with the reference until i get close to it, like 80% of the way, then branch off and make it my own. i think at this point the process of production for me is listening, deciding what the song needs, then adding that element. trial and error. like adding a little bit of paint at a time. with years of practice, eventually you make more trials, and less errors, and you get whats in your head to come out of a pair of speakers in less time, and more clearly. i think picking one reference and getting 80% of the way there with it will help a lot!
Also give yourself constraints or a certain limit if you’re still within your first year. It helps to do things like “what can I create out of 4 tracks and using only one string instrument?” Soon you’ll know how to be more decisive and clean with your ideas and avoid any extra clutter/tracks. After you finish these 4-5 track projects, you can ALWAYS come back to it later and give it what it needs, but focus on creating a full song out of those and THEN cleaning up shop after you’re able to rest on it.
Ethan, I am so grateful you were like a life saver for me. I graduted in music pro but nothing is compared to your way of teaching. I am a singer/songwriter that I always get stuck on the prodcution side even knowing how to produce. You made my life easier now

The way i want to save the full version of this. This is genuinely phenomenal.
Im From Poland i find you today and you very help me with mix then productions after that vocals, i love you man, God bless you ♥️♥️♥️
This is a lifesaver. I started making songs with Ableton because of you. Thank you so much man.
i watch your videos in awe, nothing better than watching someone making something awesome whilst having fun with it
Ethan, I am so grateful you were like a life saver for me. I graduted in music pro but nothing is compared to your way of teaching. I am a singer/songwriter that I always get stuck on the prodcution side even knowing how to produce. You made my life easier now
Very helpful video!! Can’t wait to put it to use. The base unedited scream was cracking me tf up. Thanks so much for taking the time to share in your expertise!!
You really got this!
I discovered my favourite musician days ago - his every song hits all my right spots - so my love to the music awakened/arised once again after long years of sad hibernation. It started to itching me and some inner music voice is dragging me into my unfulfilled yet love - music creation.
I was searching a good starting point, and then I looked at the yt for some program tutorials and your miniature of the video seemed just right - smile and friendly face bought me. After watching this video, I now know more than I ever could want from the beginning! This really is the best teaching video I ever watched! Thank you, thank you, thank you! You are the BEST man!
Your channel is so underrated but it will take off for sure! 🤞🏼
Thank you so much. I went to school for music and have multiple degrees including a post graduate degree in music. But it was just classical music.
Audio production is an entirely new skill all together and I’ve been struggling getting these complex comprehensive ideas in my head into the software.
This video has been so extremely helpful. You have a new subscriber. Thanks again!
This is an absolutely AMAZING video and so incredibly encouraging, thank you for this tutorial!
I love the way you broke down the production process and thank you for that I have been profusion over 10 years and this is a good reference to show those who wish to learn production
I haven't produced in roughly 8 years. I hopped on my PC and forgot almost EVERYTHING 😂 thank you so much, brotha! ❤️
welcome back!

Really great video. I've been playing and writing music for 20 years. Learning to produce music is another monster to tackle. This video really helps the steep learning curve.
My mind is blown. I was looking up videos like this to get me started because, as I told somebody 2 days ago, I want to make music that sounds like Ethan C Davis. I was midway through this video before I realized who it was! This makes me trust your advice way more. I’ve been listening to your stuff since Serenade!
Anybody want to talk about the most important part of music??? The emotion that it conveys to the listener. Otherwise you might as well just get chat gpt to make all your tunes
The only thing I’ve heard about that was « minor chord prog sad major chord prog happy 😀 »
Omg man I LOVE your energy 😂 this is honestly THE BEST music production video I've ever seen, even more so when you make it SO FUN! 😂 Thanks a lot! Appreciate it!

One correction, Ableton 11 has now reduced to 30 day trial and I keep hearing this 90 day trial from community. It is misleading. ❤️ Love your content and your style of teaching.

I already paid for an EDM bootcamp course through someone else's tutorials I've been watching for a while, but sometimes I just need to switch it up and hear the same, or different lessons from different people. I found this to be so helpful tonight, thank you so much for putting the work into making these videos for us. You're truly amazing. I deeply appreciate how much detail went into this.
awe i love to hear that! keep it up!
Damn this was a great tutorial. I like that you covered everything (picking samples/instruments all the way to simple automation) and it was easy to understand.

This single video gave me the confidence that I can probably learn music production to create some of my own songs.
I've been wanting to learn producing since the start of 2023, because I was inspired by some of my favorite artists, but I was always intimidated by it all. I was nervous, especially because I'm not good at singing and can't play instruments, so I didn't know what I should do. Thank you so much for this 🙏💜.
So glad I found your channel. Im even more inspired to produce for myself you make it so plain and clear like I feel like Im actually able to learn and do it!! Thank you.

I was trying to figure out how I'd like my workflow to go and every other beginner video was too slow. This was perfect for a rusty producer to get back in the studio. Thanks!!!

Thank you very much for all the explanations. I think it was one of the few explanations I've seen on YT that I understood almost 99%. God bless you.
One of the best music production vids I've watched you managed to keep me engaged and taking notes the whole time. I personally use waveform but a lot of what you have taught can be applied. Thanks so much, I'm going to watch that music theory vid next.
Wow I learned SO MUCH by just watching this 26 min video. THANK YOU
This is a nice video. Straight to the point, simple explanations and jumping right into it instead of endless introductions. But dude. Seriously it’s time to see the barber. 😊
