    As a European it’s so wild to me that plenty of Americans are not used to public transport. I’m happy that the subway ride was as much fun as you hoped it would be!

    • @Chaotic_Pixie
      @Chaotic_Pixie 7 месяцев назад +52

      Most Americans are used to public transport... but Subways aren't ubiquitous. There just isn't that much of a need for them or the water table prevents them. In addition to NYC, San Francisco, Chicago, Philly, LA, Baltimore, Seattle, Miami, Portland, Atlanta, Cleveland, & Newark all have subways. San Francisco Bay Area, Greater Philadelphia, & Chicago also incorporate elevated trains, highspeed light rail, busses, & trolleys with the "subway" sometimes being subterranean & sometimes above ground. Busses & light rail just do better further out from city centers. And then there's Amtrak which serves the Atlantic Corridor quite well given it owns those tracks. (Amtrak shares track with cargo transport rail everywhere else which does cause a lot of issues & the laws need to change to fix that). There's also Bright Line in Florida. What SO MANY Europeans don't get is that the US is like 50 small countries stitched together. The EU is far more like the United States.. than say the US is like just France or just Germany on its own. Emily & Ed live out in rural Minnesota/Wisconsin. Your neighbor could be a 20 minute drive from you out there. Public transit just doesn't make sense when population density is a few people per square mile.

    • @design4real918
      @design4real918 7 месяцев назад +21

      The thing is, as we do have subways in some of our cities/capitals of our states, some of us prefer not to use them--- due to safety reasons. For instance, it's known to the locals to not use subways after sunset due to risk of muggings/assaults in my city, but it might be different elsewhere.

    • @SallyGreimes
      @SallyGreimes 7 месяцев назад +13

      Also consider that the PNW is VERY hilly which requires a LOT of drilling tunnels for light rail. That gets horribly expensive and people would prefer buses. Outside of major cities it is ultra expensive to run bus lines, let alone light rail. Consider the size of European countries vs the square miles of the entire USA. That may explain density vs land to serve. In that states run their rapid transit.
      Consider these issues before complaining about US.

    I went to ground zero in 2003, when debris was still being hauled away and the memorial board was just a wall people were writing names on. It's an incredibly sobering experience, and despite the construction, there was just this cone of silence over it all, no one spoke, no one said anything. It's a very quiet place in the middle of this bustling city.

    Thank you for sharing your 9/11 experience. I was 16 when the towers fell. My mom woke me up and told me something had happened in NY and that she had also learned that one of my uncles had passed away, but she wanted to make sure that I knew that the two incidents weren't related. She kept my little brother home from school that day , but I was able to go to class. We lived in California so school wasn't canceled. That whole day in all but one of my classes all we did was watch the news. I had Japanese as my last class of the day and my sensei (teacher) turned off the TV and had us focus on Japanese because "when we are in her class we are in Japan, and the terror attacks are not a Japanese problem". It was nice to have a break from the news.

      Minnesota does have light rail and commuter rail, so we're not completely unfamiliar with rail transit. But there's no subway in the Twin cities.
      I am surprised that they've never been on a subway before, though, because Chicago has a subway, and Chicago's a popular travel destination for midwesterners.

    I always love getting to see NYC through fresh eyes. It's always so fun! Next time you're in NYC (especially during fair weather months) y'all need to do a Circle Line Boat Tour! The guides are fabulous & hilarious... and you get to see more of NYC than you could possibly imagine along with fun history lessons & anecdotes. The last one I took, the tour guide pointed out the building his very first NYC apartment was in... 420sqft & he shared it with 3 other roommates. He was proud to say he'd upgraded to a luxurious 630sqft & only shares with one roommate now. (Both apartments being studios/lofts).
    Also, fun fact, the NYC rat population is 1/3 the number of humans in NYC. About 3mil rats to roughly 8.5-9mil humans. As for the pigeons, there's no less than 4mil of those in NYC... or about half the population of humans. So combined, between regular rats & their winged brethren, it's about a 1:1 ratio of rat or pigeon to person!

    I went to NYC when I was 19, not even a year after 9/11. They had just barely finished cleaning up ground zero when we visited. I just remember there was a huge gap in the skyline where the towers were. It was really sombering to see and the atmosphere was so heavy. Definitely something I’ll never forget seeing ☹️

    It's so funny watching you guys experience a (kinda crappy-looking, not going to lie) subway for the first time! My country is lucky to have a large network that connects even smaller towns to the bigger cities. I traveled various routes regularly for years heading to school and employment options. Lost small items a few times (most of which I could collect at the nearest lost-and-found a few days layer!) because of my ADHD brain running on ahead and forgetting, but I never had anything stolen.
    Anyway, I love your work Snake Discovery! You guys are the reason why I got my first reptile, a wild type banded African Fat Tailed gecko! He's about 2 to 4 years and I got him for free on the 9th of October, off of a marketplace from a reptile keeper who was downsizing. His new name is Caraxes :)

    What I love about this video is that it's so similar to my experience when I went to NYC. I grew up in rural New England, so everything was magical and/or disgusting, even though I've been to Boston, Atlanta, and Seattle. The most important part of my trip, besides the podcast live shows, was the food. I don't think I saw as many pigeons though which honestly is a tragedy. I think they're so gosh darn cute.

My youngest son and his wife went and sent videos back of the WTC, it is just so chilling to see and watching that day plays in my head all the time, my 5 children where from their 20’s and this youngest son was about 7 yrs old. They also went to the one memorial they have in the building close to the tower memorial that shows how the steal was bent just from the shear force of the buildings falling. I was crying with ever picture or video he sent me. It still shakes me to the core. Tfs your adventure. ❤

    Emily enters the subway: Wow, it smells like pee.
    Me: Welcome to New York.
    I'm glad you and Ed were able to visit NYC. Your enthusiasm for riding the subway is so cute, albeit weird to me since I'm a born and bred native New Yorker and have been riding the subway my whole life. Glad you enjoyed the white slice. If you prefer thicker pizza, try a Sicilian slice the next time you're here. They're thick squares of pizza. Aggressive driving is the norm here. To me, it's just normal driving. I actually get impatient when I ride in car with a good driver!
    You were only 10 on 9/11? You are young. I was working downtown that day, just a five minute walk from the WTC. I'll never forget it. I grew up seeing the Twin Towers at the tip of Manhattan. The skyline still looks kinda weird to me without them.
    Hope you get to make it back soon and have a Sicilian slice!

      They really need more restrooms in the subway.
      I do understand they removed a bunch so people couldn't do drugs in them...but that just created a different problem.

    • @katherinetamarizhoward3215
      @katherinetamarizhoward3215 7 месяцев назад

      @@ladykoiwolfe It's not just the drug addicts or the homeless. A subway restroom is the perfect place to attack someone, usually to rob them. I certainly wouldn't feel safe using a subway restroom. I bet a lot of New Yorkers feel the same way. Especially these days when there's a surge of random attacks on the subway. I don't see that changing anytime soon. I don't feel a need for the subway restrooms to reopen. I plan around my commutes and make sure I use the restroom before I go to the subway. I also am careful about drinking beverages while commuting, especially if I'm gonna be on the subway a while. I live out in Queens too, and I commute to the city everyday. Go before you go and you'll be good.
