    Здравствуйте Андрей! Yes, you have the right observation. Some people find it preferable to write the way they speak, both in structure and in spelling. Some compromises have already been built into standard written and spoken English, for example, with contractions (can't, aren't...). I like the discipline it takes to learn to write clearly. Language is a tool, and any tool should be handled with care and with skill for it to be used most effectively. Спасибо за добрые слова! Всего хорошего! :)

    Hi Marcelo. Remember that conditional statements can express (1) real and likely events as well as (2) unreal and unlikely events. When we are talking about hypothetical situations, we can use WERE for all subjects.
    If I were you...
    If this were a more formal message...
    If he were in England already...
    PRESENT FACTS: I'm not really you, this isn't a more formal message, and he isn't in England.
    Does that make sense?

    Hello Marcelo. Yes, there was a request for clarification regarding acronyms, so I felt it was best to edit the second half and reload the video. This version is the more accurate one. In general, we're dealing with abbreviations (short forms), but there is a difference between abbreviations and acronyms. Sorry for the confusion!

    Hola La Jennifer!
    I used to like very informal writting specialy in English, I thought it was cool, I still think is kind of cool as long as you dont over use it, but when I started learning Portugues, I was afraid to confuse Portugues with Spanish, so I decided to start writting Spanish more formaly, even writting it with the accents. That inspired me to also try to writte more formaly in English too. I don't know if you have noticed it my dear teacher :)
    There's a guy on youtube and he is like teaching informal Portugues, because he says that is better to learn first the informal things and then the formal ones, because when you go to Brazil people are going to be speaking informaly. And it is true, I mean the brazilians that I follow on social networks, they upload their videos and they all speak with a lot of contrations, in a informaly way, but even with this situation I don't agree with learning first the informal.
    I mean can you imagine learning first: gonna, wanna, ain't and afterwards going to, want to, aren't, etc. I think is just wrong, you know?
    That makes me think that this guy is not a real teacher.
    Or Maybe I'm just too geek, and I shouldn't be so tradional when it comes to languagues. :S :S :S
    I mean l used to use informality a lot, but I did Iearn the right way of writting and speaking first.
    By the way, I was watching your present perfect videos, and you used exemplos like I have been married for... since...
    And I was like 😂😂😂
    And I am very impressed!! 😏😉🎆
    Happy teaching my beautiful one🌷😘

      Hi Marcela. There are different approaches to learning a language. One factor is your goal (or goals). If you don't need English for academic purposes or your future workplace will be very casual, then you can get away with informal English and non-standard language. In my opinion, standard language will serve you in more situations. I think you need to learn the skill of adapting your language to your audience. There are times for formal language, and there times for informal language. A true communicator can recognize and handle the need for both. ;)

    I've always wondered - why written English so strange? They say one thing - write in a different way. Why is this so hard?

  • @Englishwithjennifer
    @Englishwithjennifer  11 лет назад

    Please don't think you have to write this way. I don't think it's a good way to write. It's important to be aware of the differences between slang and more standard forms of writing. You will certainly see these abbreviations and symbols on the Internet, especially on forums and in text chats. Now you can make sense of the writing...without feeling you must also use it.
    Regards!

    Hi Jennifer! May I ask you something? Is it possible to use a Flapped T when pronounce "I dunno"?

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  6 лет назад +1

      Hi Sam. The flap T happens with double T's in words like little, butter, matter, etc. It also happens in between words when the T is between vowel sounds and the following one is unstressed: later, brighter, etc.. In "I don't know" we actually drop the T. You often hear "dunno."

    • @_amarilis
      @_amarilis 6 лет назад

      JenniferESL Oh no! I think I didn't make myself clear. Sorry, my bad! I wasn't talking about the "T". Actually, I was talking about the "D" of dunno. I know it maybe sounds weird, because if true, the negative would be unstressed... but I can assure you that I heard a Fast D instead of a real D. Now I'm confused. Maybe it could be a weak D... or should I listen more carefully? 😓😅

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  6 лет назад +1

      Hi. The D in "don't" and "dunno" are both /d/. I don't think of strong and weak D's.

    I have to ask, I don't think slang develops "lazy writing", for example I know some kids my age who write internet slang but great English, so how does it make lazy writing

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  10 лет назад

      You're right. Some can keep the lines clear and use standard English when the situation calls for it, but for others it becomes easy to let the lines blur and relax the so-called rules. My suggestion for English language learners is not to develop the kinds of habits that will make it difficult to revert back to standard language when necessary. Clear writing is a skill that many ESL/EFL students need to succeed in universities or in the workplace.
      Thanks for commenting.

    I always write in non-formal writing cuz it just takes 4eva

    • @Englishwithjennifer
      @Englishwithjennifer  8 лет назад

      +Lewis ParkerVevo It can certainly be easier to use abbreviations and acronyms. Then again the auto-correct features and word prompts on texting apps help more than hurt. Voice dictation is growing popular, too. It can be tedious typing on my phone, but I like typing on my PC. I guess there was a benefit to taking that semester of touch typing back in high school. :)
