Being "smart" doesn't come down to just using Logic it has many forms, Wit, Guile, adaptability, manipulation I could go on they can all factor into intelligence I have a friend who is dyslexic and isn't good with numbers but everytime anyone he knows gets into a real life problem he is the first they come to because he is extremely cunning and street smart.
Lol it still sounded like wachel wiley to me.. he brought his lips forward and together for both Rs as you would to make a W sound, not a correctly formed R.
That's because it's not a speech impediment, it's just his accent! He pronounces it the way most people from the South East pronounce it who are not middle or upper class. It used to be the norm for the aristocracy of London too, in the 1800s before their R sound changed again. It's most often heard on TV from Cockney, where nobody ever comments on it I guess because they are used to it being in that accent so their brains don't send an alert for them to pay attention to that sound, whereas because his accent is not a pure Cockney accent suddenly people who aren't from the south east hear an unexpected feature of speech for the accent he has and so they actually notice it. It is NOT a w. W is a bilabial approximant. This is a labiodental approximant. The only people who have a speech impediment, are the ones who mistake his labiodental approximant for a w, and fail to imitate the sound he actually makes. They actually can't even hear or produce the difference between those two sounds.
It's an accent if the people you learned English from do it too. Which can be either your parents or peers as both have an effect. That can make it hard to know when some of the people you learned English around do it and others don't. But if some of them do, it's probably just you accurately producing the dialect you heard.
Took me long time to even slightly tolerate Jonathan Ross just because my introduction to him was the clip from Big Fat Quiz where he tried to force David Mitchell to dance but I like him now.
Yes! From the south east and some other places like Norwich! It is exactly what people are used to hearing in Cockney, but I guess because his accent is not purely Cockney, the sound jumps out at them as unexpected and they consciously notice it. Then they call it a speech impediment. No Cockney speaker ever gets mistaken for having a speech impediment even though they say exactly the same R he does. The weirdest thing is, there are people in the South East who pronounce it the same way he does but STILL believe that he says it wrong just because the media say so. They haven't actually noticed that they pronounce it the same way. Same happens with people who say "street" like "shtreet", some of them notice when other people do it but have no idea that they do it themselves until you ask them to say the same word and listen to it.
I feel his pain. I used to have this impediment and it’s still comes out when I’m tired or comfortable. People talk different ways, am not sure why people find it funny.
I wonder if a certain part of the tongue is paralyzed, or perhaps doesn't have the nerve endings required to curl to tongue just right to make the "R" sound.
Can someone tell me where are the cameras? Like the ones directly to theirs heads because when do a pan of the scene there are no cameras and i am going crazy
It's just an accent. Cockneys have it too but people don't notice cos they are used to Cockneys on TV whereas Ross's accent is a bit unusual to have on TV, it is not pure Cockney, so people actually notice it cos it is not expected in non-Cockney speech unless you are from the south east and so are used to the fact that it is not only Cockneys who have this R sound. It is also not the same as the W sound. Confusing it for the W sound is a sign that it is not a feature of your native accent, your brain didn't learn English having to tell the difference between those sounds like it did if you have both of those sounds in your accent. People who natively speak an accent with this feature in it can hear the difference easily between bilabial W and labiodental approximant R.
There are some English accents that pronounce r in a different way to the "standard" so it sounds like a w to others but they still pronounce r differently to the way they pronounce w. Not sure if Ross has one of these.
It is easy to tell apart from the w sound, to those of us who grow up with an accent like this or surrounded by accents like this. Cockney has the same sound but nobody notices because they are used to hearing Cockney on TV, so the sound doesn't jump out as out of place when heard in the context of a Cockney sentence. W is a bilabial approximant. This sound is a labiodental approximant. I would never confuse those sounds. Interestingly, I do have trouble hearing the difference between this sound and the standard British English R. I can hear it but have to pay attention, my brain is used to translating one sound to the other so that I can understand people who don't speak like me. Even more interestingly, I have asked people around me who have the same pronunciation, confirmed by having them describe what is happening with their mouth when they make the sound, and they somehow believe that they do NOT speak like Jonathan Ross, until I point it out. They are used to translating their own R sound in their minds to the standard, I guess, but when they hear Ross speak, they can hear that he doesn't sound like other people on TV and so will label him as someone who does this, completely unaware that they sound the same way, cos they have never had to hear themselves on TV and compare it directly to the other presenters without that sound.
"Rachel Riley" *applause* "Oh weally"
Victoria is right, Lee Mack is smarter than everyone credits him as being, he's incredibly quick at adapting jokes
So many of the dim-witted idiots are so much smarter than they appear in my opinion. Lee, Johnny Vegas and even Danny Dyer dare I say haha.
it's almost as if they're doing a character

Yeah a bit
He's a timelord. Did you have to ruin his regeneration?!
I went to a Lee Mack gig. He's so quick with the comebacks, he silenced the hecklers in seconds.

I bet Lee's good friends with Victoria as she would know him through David. I love WILTY :)
I love that he’s such a good sport about it.
Jimmy carr 100% looks like a robot serving drinks.
When Jimmy makes fun of Jon’s height, you can see Jonathan shaking his head in disappointment. Justice for Jon
I feel like Jonathan Ross has gone rogue celebrity. I should say wogue.

Wob Saxon would like to eat you.
eeew, not you though.
Wouldn't mind her eating my chocolate crispies ;)
if they make a new Looney Tunes cartoon Wossy could do the voice of Elmer Fudd.
I feel bad for him because I have the same speech problem. I've learned that pressing your the back of tongue on your back teeth helps
Lee is the best comedian on tv
When jons daughter grows up, she’ll just see how much her dad was bullied on national television
Anyone else here comparing how the pronounce their Rs from Tom Scott?

If you know a Jonathan who spells their name like that, shoot them.
Lee mac is a legend.
Oh no, Jonathan Ross is adorable in this clip...
Love Lee Mack!!
Literally I can’t pronounce my r’s too
Google the Karla method if you haven’t heard of it yet. I finally learned to pronounce my ‘r’s at 22 years old because of it

That’s not the same r

its funny that jonathan woss cant even say his own name
Unfortunately he’s not the only one, try introducing yourself when you’re called Ruben, so awkward
He had Wobin Williams on his show. That was awkward
I can't say my own. You know how awkward it is when other people introduce after you've already tried to?
It's not funny trust me💁🏻
I don't trust you because it is hilarious! Upload a video of an hour trying to say your own name and I shall be in tears laughing!
Man I can see how annoyed he was being made fun of; he got bored of Jimmy so quickly 😂
Who wouldn't?
I found him in my kitchen stealing kitchen utensils. In court he said it was a whisk he was willing to take…..forgive me if you’ve heard it before.
