Catherine Sews has a great tip for starting a seam to hide the tail. Start the seam a couple of stitches, raise the foot, pull the tail back through against the needles, and stitch a couple of inches and let the serger knife cut it off. It’s really good for an exposed seam at a hem or something where you don’t want so much bulk.
Instead of an embroidery needle, I use a double-eyed needle, since both ends are rounded. I often use a floss threader to get all four threads through the eye of the needle.
THANK YOU I bought my first serger in the 80's basic the tension was always off.. I had a friend that had a 5thread singer .. she was always experimenting.. gosh I miss her.. Second serger later and Im complainant. thanks for reminding me what Donna showed me many year ago..
Those tips _were_ actually useful! Loved that cuff thing you did. It bamboozled me, i had to rewind it and watch it again 😂 I’ve been trying to find out the ladder stitch for ages, your simple explanation made sense. I’m going to save this video. Consider yourself honoured 😂 🩵
Thanks for the tips. I’m learning to love my serger. I recently got comfortable threading it. Once I learned it’s a done deal.Have you tried or seen the way some will start the sewing then tuck the end of threads back under to allow the serger to go back over the tails. That seems to be another workable option.
Yes! I've done that for seams where I want a cleaner finish. So many different ways to do it, just gotta figure out what works best for you and your project. ☺️ Keep up the practice, you'll get there!! 😉~J
I use the gathering foot to gather ruffles and attach to hem of skirt all in one motion. I sew dresses each year for Dress a Girl Around the World and it makes it so easy. Your ideas were all good, especially for beginners on a serger. It’s quite intimidating at first.
you're so right! A serger can seem intimiating at first, but then it becomes so accessible and useful! How wonderful to make pieces for the dress a girl program!
I have only had my serger for about 6 months now, and knew it could do a lot more than serging, but was a bit scared to try! That was a great first introduction to exploring a bit further. It really helped boost my confidence!
You explain everything so well, thank you for the great tips and the information you give! This has been very helpful as I am thinking about buying a Serger! Great video thanks for Sharing Liz 😊
Thank you for these serger tips. I am especially looking forward to the gathering tip - looks very do-able and will save so much time and finished the edge too!
I have the Imagine and i love it! Appreciate this video. On the rolled/lettuce stitch, your knob should have been in the the rolled area, not the standard. ❤😊
Looking forward to the crescendo jeans pattern and searching for accessories. I liked the video and the hints, thank you. Have you thought about selling a starter kit? With all the notions and thread, elastic etc. I will look at the shops you have recommended as there is truly a dirth of good fabric stores where I live!
We've done that before with the Legatos! They sold out very quickly!! But that requires coordinating with fabric companies to supply the bundles. For this release, several brought in stretch denim and some have already sold out! But they know the demand is there now, so it will be back! ☺️ ~J
Love your tips and techniques! Question; why is your light on your serger so bright? I have the exact same serger and the bulb is one of the old kind Thank you❤
So many great tips! Thank you! About serging the cut edges of your fabric before you wash it, it has another purpose. I throw the fabric in the wash as soon as I serge it. That way, if fabric edges are serged, I know it has been pre-washed. If the edges aren't serged, it hasn't been pre-washed. No surprises now with garments shrinking.
I just want know how to set different stitches on my Bernette 303. I am rather less of a beginner. Dixon refers to the clarity of pronunciation pronunciation of a language. Thanks.
Ah okay! Not familiar with that particular machine, so not much help there, but I bet there are FB or reddit forums specifically for your machine that could likely help! 🙂 ~J
It does work in the round, you just sew over where you started before chaining off. Cut the chain, and you can give the needle threads a tug to secure it, or burn with a lighter (or however you prefer to finish, but it should be plenty secure just chaining off after going over the start and trimming.) ~J
Aw, I'm sorry it isn't easier! Is there something we can help clarify? We are here to help! (I don't know what dixion means, if that's intentional or a typo but if it's something we can help with, please let us know!) ~J

@@jeanettesmith5998I hope this helped give you confidence to try new techniques with your serger.
I have a gathering foot as well but since it’s an add-on, I thought the simpler technique would be more universally used.
That was very helpful. I will use those techniques today on a dress I’m making for my great granddaughter.
