This is the 1st time I've watched one of your videos, but it won't be the last. You are very easy to understand because of the tempo of your speech and your excellent enunciation. When making notes about the different settings you may need for certain fabrics, I suggest that one should include a small sample of each fabric.
My tips would be to place your pins about an inch to the left and parallel to the seam edge (clearing the presser foot, at minimum) so you don’t have to even worry about sewing through pins. You can remove the pins after. It’s also faster since you don’t have to stop and start stitching. I always watch the edge where the knife cuts, and draw your seam allowance on the fabric if you aren’t good at judging the distance yet since the seam allowance line is marked above and to the right of the needle area.
Drawing seam lines is such a good tip! Especially for beginners🙌
NEVER use pins when using a serger. Good way for a beginner to veer off desired line and strike a pin. Great way to lose an eye. Just don’t get in the habit of using pins. Bad idea to do so.

Julija I sew needed these explanations- I have a brother serger (not your model) - I was wondering how to back stitch today. As far as tension goes I wish the manual was more comprehensive about fabric weights and make up - I’m really intimidated by changing settings, more videos on this subject please , I’ve watched others but they are as useless as the manual. You speak very clearly and at a good relaxed pace. 🌟🌷😊
I was thinking about making video on different settings for perfect serger seam, but haven’t yet figured how to explain it well and easy🤔 But it’s definitely on my video idea list!🤗
In addition to what Julija has to say I can say save all of your cutting scraps, not just the very large pieces. Use the smaller ones to fiddle with the tension on your sewing machine and serger, especially the latter if you're using the serger on single layers to finish the edge.
Some machines are easier than others: I find those with horizontal tension discs (the thread is pulled through the discs from the right around the bottom and up) to be less fussy than vertical discs. Also, a machine with differential feed can make things pretty tedious. Your mileage may vary. 🙂

I have just recently bought the Brother Airflow, and I’m so happy about it. One tip is, when you thread the serger, lower the tension to 1 or 2 - it is so much easier. Just remember to switch it back 😊

The backstitching tips are amazing! I use my differential feed on knits all the time. Another tip is to use it to gather your fabric super fast and very evenly by setting it as high as it can go. Magic!
My tip: use wooly nylon in the upper looper when making seams on pants and skirts. The seam is fuller, more elastic, and durable. Also that's for the backstitching tip! Game changer.

Good morning! I have sewing forever snd serging for almost that long lol. These are great pieces of advice. Goes to show we can always improve. You may have said this in the past: always, always, always sew/serge test piece!!!!!! 🤦🤦🤦. Have a fabulous today!
Testing seams is important, but with sergers it’s even more important! I do some setting adjustment with every fabric🤗

Between you and Abi, my serging has gotten better. Thank you for your clear instructions. One tip for me is to keep the white thread in the serger. It's not going to show unless it's on the top of the garment. The decorative thread is tied on and pulled through with tensions set at 0. But that is not too often.
I really liked this video! Even though my serger does all that I keep forgetting how the differential feed works and how to adjust it to get gathers etc. I’m definitely saving this video for future reference! Thanks again 😊❤❤❤

About tip#1, ending part, I prefer manually put the string back using a big eye needle. It looks nicer to me. Beginning part, both ways work for me.

I deactivated the blades from my serger, I prefer that I don't cut off when overlocking.
My big issue with serging is how to go over seam joints without the serger going crazy. I have tried everything - disengaging the knife, reducing or increasing pressure, adjusting thread tension, changing needles etc. Sometimes it works and fools me into thinking I finally figured it out. But I try again and nothing works. Soon as the serger has to go over a bump, thread cuts or looper thread feeds into the needle eye, or I lose thread in one of the loopers or something or the other. It's exhausting re-threading the serger a million times on one little project.
Hm, that sounds like serger might have an issue and maybe should be check at service🤔 One advice I can give: at seam connections, try pressing one seam allowance to one side, and other - to the other side. This will make seam connection way less bulky🤗
Julie I love your content and I watch it religiously, but recently your audio has been very echo heavy. It's somewhat difficult to hear your voice over the sound of the echo in the room. Just a suggestion, much love 💕

I have a needle question. I rarely have changed the needles on my serger How does one know when it is necessary
General recommendation I’ve read is to change needles every 8 hours of sewing, I think it applies to sergers, too🤗
