The Powerhead he makes for his team . He has a local machine shop make the blank aluminum casings , and he adds the rest . He chose to use a Russian military rifle round ( 7.62x54R ) and it puts out the explosive power he needs to kill the bigger fish , or for protection . That cartridge can be purchased on-line in already sealed primers and bullets to protect against moisture , and has plenty of power to still work fine in deeper water .

RV, thanks! I'm still diving my same computers from the 90's and have no personal knowledge on what's a good model nowadays. I def would recommend getting a model that you can change your own battery on. A larger screen for older eyes would be a plus as well. A good friend just bought a Garmin dive watch that looks pretty impressive. I'll see what he thinks about it after a few months. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 Thanks, they are sending it back to the factory at California. Hopefully they can fix it or work something out since I believe its lifetime warranty. I hope, thank you sir. If you retired and dive south of the ski way bridge I will carry your fish stringer, as long its below 100' Lol
As a spearo from the Mediterranean, this is unusual because of the scuba tanks, but I believe it’s way more ethic and less damaging compared to the disasters that even professional fishermen do here with nets, in the sea. Just one note, at first I thought the shot immediately knocked out the AJs but I realised for some it didn’t, maybe a deep stab with the knife whenever possible? Enjoy the ocean, dive safe
Hey Buio, thanks you for your comments. I appreciate them. It's def a "green" way yo commercial fish compared to other methodologies. No by catch, no unwanted or undersized small fish caught and discarded. No damage from nets, longlines, traps, etc... Usually I PH AJ's and it's almost always instantly fatal. I do carry a Kill Knife but hardly ever use it. Thanks you for the well wishes and I wish you the best as well. Dan
TOD, I use a 7.62/54R exclusively. It's a "rimmed" cartridge (like a revolver cartridge) which makes building a PH for it much easier. The surplus ammo can be bought for a good price and has plenty of power. The only draw back to it compared to say a .223 is that it's physically a much larger cartridge and thus requires a larger casing. No big deal to me, as the other benefits more than make up for that. Best, Dan
Hey Randy, I love 'em! Better on fuel and they are vastly better in the rough stuff. Those Duo-Props are kinda like 4 wheel drive, they will allow you to slug it out at slower speeds with no loss in fuel economy. Pretty amazing! Best, Dan

Thanks Richard ! lol, sometimes in all just seems to flow and other times I swear I couldn't stone one with a hand grenade! I appreciate your comments and you watching. Best, Dan
It is called a Powerhead , and contains a cartridge that puts out a blast of explosive pressure when it goes off . These are used to kill larger fish , and for protection . He chooses to use a rifle cartridge ( 7.62x54R ) so it puts out plenty of knockdown power even in deeper water .
BMG, It's a home made gun we make ourselves. Roughly based on an older Sea Hornet but utilizing better quality parts and tighter tolerances. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Hi Simon, AJ is slang for Greater Amber Jacks. The device is a simple machined aluminum casing that holds a rifle cartridge. The spear point acts as a firing pin. Usually called a "slip on" power head. Kills the fish instantly and bleeds it out quickly. Much safer for the diver, the fish doesn't suffer, and the meat is much better. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 much appreciated. I've never heard of Amber Jacks here in the Caribbean, although again, I'm no fisherman. (Shame) ref the cartridge on the spear, your design or can be purchased? Spearfishing is legal here but with restrictions. No tanks etc.
@@danmacmahon3973 Hey Dan. A quick message to a friend tells me we call them Kingfish here. The more popular fish are mahi mahi and wahoo and tuna. Awsome video! This AJs look huge. Just wondering because I’ve never seen it before. What’s the deal with the plastic tips you add onto the tip of your spear gun? Is it so it doesn’t Pearce all the way through the fishes body?

I'm SE Fla diver and amazed at the clarity of the water for the depth, when I boat over on the west coast it always seemed more silt-y and more tannon in the water, than east coast. but my videos aren't as clear, in less depth. also, its Sooooo flat on the surface... jelly.
@@danmacmahon3973 Oh, so its not a seasonal thing? more of a wind/front? on east coast, Nov-April its a lot cleaner due to lack of rain/runoff. non rainy season you can see the bottom from 10-20' but we get about a 2' brown/brackish water on the surface you can't see thru after june. but north of miami, most of the diving is within 2-3 miles of the shore.
Dan those were some monster AJs. Nice gag also. Where do you get your PH. And is there a license or something that you need. I want some of them. Great video brother

curious question, I just read that these slip on Power heads in Florida aren't legal for recreational harvesting so how are they legal for commercial? or is it beacuse that is a state regulation (the past 9 mile state boundary) or something about 35-40 miles outside the "stressed area" so if you head back within these imaginary boundaries you basically can't stop anywhere and dive within that on the way back correct? or FWC will assume you speared them inshore if they see you anchored close to land.
Hey SO, yes they're illegal for harvesting food fish in state waters (9nm in GOM). They are legal for Rec and Comm in Federal waters as long as you're deeper then the stressed zone(which is either the 60 foot contour or the 120 foot contour depending on what area of the Gulf you're in). Yes, if you legally PH fish in legal waters and stop in shallower waters on the way in and had PH fish on board, you'd be in trouble if stopped by law enforcement. If you don't stop on the way in, you're legal at the dock. Having a track plot on your GPS showing you were deeper than the stressed zone wouldn't be a bad idea. Best, Dan
Thanks Todd, the funny thing is I'm not allowed to keep any IFQ commercial fish for personal consumption. I have to sell them to my wholesale buyer , so they're taken off my quota. Then, if I want, I can buy them from my wholesaler to take home. But you're right, that would def fill the freezer fast! Best, Dan
King, we use PH's mostly for Commercial AJ's, sometimes for a really big fish in deep water and rarely, for personal protection. Thank you for watching the videos! Best, Dan
Tan TV, it's a machined aluminum casing that holds a rifle cartridge. The spear point acts as a firing pin. Commonly called a "slip on" power head. Best, Dan
I have always felt powerheads are the safest most humane way to spearfish. The sharks don't move in because of the BOOM.. and the fish that are harvested never hear it. We mostly used 357 but I have several different ones. I don't have any 7.62x54 That's the equivalent of a 30-06 Ha that's a BLAST
IBB55, I def agree, painless for the fish and safer for the diver. I like the 7.62/54R because they still have enough "oomph" to get it done in deep water. Thanks for watching and your comments. Best, Dan
BR, yes, the commercial season is based on a TAC (Total allowable Catch). The season is open until the TAC is met, with the exception of a 3 month closure every year during March-April-May to protect their spawning time. Best, Dan

Rob, you made me laugh with that pic in my head! Actually, I usually select the fish that gives me the best shot. Sometimes we'll target a species, like AJ's but normally we just dive bottom fish bottom and hunt whatever bottom fish are there. Occasionally my buyer will ask for something specific but usually he's happy with whatever we bring him. Best, Dan

Hey ave k, they're a machined aluminum casing that holds a rifle cartridge. Utilizes the spear point as a firing pin. Commonly called a "slip on" power head. Usually used for personal protection or for taking large fish in deep water. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 thank you for replying to my question..here in greece is illegal using those heads and that's the reason I haven't ever seen or heard about it..keep up the good work..stay safe..
Best fish hunting video ever!!!
Thanks Yiannis! Best, Dan
Dan we need more videos am watching old ones for the pass months
Inny, Minny, mighty, moooooo. Take your pick.
Thank you for the thrill Dan 👍
Boom boom boom, out go the Lights.
Couldn't have gotten a better shot on that Gag.👍
Thanks Tony! The MG is still one of my favorite areas to dive! Best, Dan
What gun/spear setup is that? Seems to be very well setup.
Maybe make a video of it?
Need to find some more boat friends on treasure Coast.
Luis, it's a home made gun. I'll def plan on doing a video on the gun as soon as time permits. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Nice fish gud size🐠🐟👍
Thanks KM and thanks for watching! Best, Dan
What are you putting on the arrow? I have not seen anything like this before, could you explain a little more about it.This device is also bought there, and also for what fish is it mostly used?

GOOD EVNING WATCHING FROM PHILIPPINES☺💝YOURE NEW FRIEND ON RUclips😱🇵🇭
Awesome dive, congrats. Would you mind If I ask what caliber/Brand are those powerheads?
Recif, I have the aluminum cases made up by a machine shop so there's no brand. The cartridge is a Russian 7.62-54R Military round. Best, Dan
That deck footage brought your video to a whole new level. Thanks.
Thanks Bill, I enjoyed the deck footage as well. I'll be doing a lot of that in future dives. Best, Dan
Awesome videos Dan! What is that bullet you use for amberjacks is been sold to the stores or you make them?
The Powerhead he makes for his team . He has a local machine shop make the blank aluminum casings , and he adds the rest . He chose to use a Russian military rifle round ( 7.62x54R ) and it puts out the explosive power he needs to kill the bigger fish , or for protection . That cartridge can be purchased on-line in already sealed primers and bullets to protect against moisture , and has plenty of power to still work fine in deeper water .
hello greetings from venezuela what artifact do you use with the amber jacks??
Hey SM, it's a machined aluminum casing that holds a rifle cartridge. Uses the spear point as a firing pin. Commonly called a "slip on" power head. Usually used for taking large fish in deep water or for personal protection. Best, Dan

Wow that stringer was litted up like a Christmas tree!
Just check my dive computer Scubapro Uwatec 2006 is dead. Probably replace it since it's too old. Any recommendations. Now I see watches or consoles. Scubapro G2 seems nice but it's on the $1050.00 . Just wanted to confirm with you since you are our big Cojuna. Lol
If you retired and dive south of the ski way bridge I will carry your fish stringer, as long its below 100'
Lol
Dan
Dan, what caliber are you using and why, and do you use different Calibers for different species?
TOD, I use a 7.62/54R exclusively. It's a "rimmed" cartridge (like a revolver cartridge) which makes building a PH for it much easier. The surplus ammo can be bought for a good price and has plenty of power. The only draw back to it compared to say a .223 is that it's physically a much larger cartridge and thus requires a larger casing. No big deal to me, as the other benefits more than make up for that. Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 it sure does a heck of a job on those AJ's probably a dumb question here how did the 223 handle those AJ's?
@@danmacmahon3973 so I looked up the cartridge, it says it is the equivalent to a 30 ought 6... that's a massive cartridge.
Beautiful boat. How are the new Suks working out?
Hey Randy, I love 'em! Better on fuel and they are vastly better in the rough stuff. Those Duo-Props are kinda like 4 wheel drive, they will allow you to slug it out at slower speeds with no loss in fuel economy. Pretty amazing! Best, Dan
what kind of speargun is that? (brand? ) and where it can be found? thanks super nice video.
Hey Hugo, it's a home made gun we build ourselves. Roughly based on an older Sea Hornet but utilizing better quality parts. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Hey Hugo it's a speargun!! LOL just messing with you but it's the kind of gun that actually spears fish which makes it a speargun...😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Wow so so cold water is 61f. Anyway where is located in ocean?
Hey Amin, we dive in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico, off the West Coast of Florida, USA. Water temps vary quite a bit from Winter - Summer, ranging form 52-88F, quite a swing for sure! Best, Dan
Pretty work. Definitely like the deck footage. Easier to realize the size of the fish!
Thanks Blake, I'll def be doing deck footage on all future videos. Glad you liked the video! Best, Dan
You made that one look too easy Dan. You were definitely dialed in that dive. Poetry in motion. You're going to give people a complex. ;-)
Thanks Richard ! lol, sometimes in all just seems to flow and other times I swear I couldn't stone one with a hand grenade! I appreciate your comments and you watching. Best, Dan
Those are huge fish...altogether what was the weight if you dont mind... Anyways great video as always.
Irn, thanks! The AJ's were probably 50-60 Lbs each and the gags up to 22 Lbs or so. Glad you're enjoying the video's! Best, Dan
what is the name of this piece used in front of the harpoon?
It is called a Powerhead , and contains a cartridge that puts out a blast of explosive pressure when it goes off . These are used to kill larger fish , and for protection . He chooses to use a rifle cartridge ( 7.62x54R ) so it puts out plenty of knockdown power even in deeper water .
What kind of gun u use if u don’t mind. Them bullets are awesome and fast. 👍👍
BMG, It's a home made gun we make ourselves. Roughly based on an older Sea Hornet but utilizing better quality parts and tighter tolerances. Thanks for watching, Best, Dan
Forgive my ignorance, what are AJs and what type of shot is that? I haven't spearfished in 25+ years so I've never seen that technology.

I'm SE Fla diver and amazed at the clarity of the water for the depth, when I boat over on the west coast it always seemed more silt-y and more tannon in the water, than east coast. but my videos aren't as clear, in less depth. also, its Sooooo flat on the surface... jelly.
MrB, yeah it def can be green/cloudy over here. Just like any area, varies from day to day. Best, Dan
Cool video,thanks Dan

curious question, I just read that these slip on Power heads in Florida aren't legal for recreational harvesting so how are they legal for commercial? or is it beacuse that is a state regulation (the past 9 mile state boundary) or something about 35-40 miles outside the "stressed area" so if you head back within these imaginary boundaries you basically can't stop anywhere and dive within that on the way back correct? or FWC will assume you speared them inshore if they see you anchored close to land.
Best, Dan
@@danmacmahon3973 makes sense apprecaite it!
Holy stringer Batman! That’ll fill the freezer fast.
Best, Dan
