Man, I was yelling at my screen when you let a couple of those snaggle toothed snappers go by at first, but you went back and got em anyway. I was in Hog Heaven either way watching this one.

Great video I have 2 question did you ever get that grouper and shaft and what advice would you give to someone who never spearfish before scared of shark but would love to do it?
JMC, yes, the next diver up, retrieved the fish and shaft. As far as Sharks, If I took up Spear Fishing, I'd try and go to areas where it's less likely to see them. I'd always dive with a competent buddy and build my confidence up gradually when seeing them. They're def a part of Salt Water Spear Fishing . With a competent Buddy and liberal use of good common sense, you should be fine. Would enjoy hearing about how it goes if you give it a whirl. Best, Dan

Zach, my brother in law does the wood work, we like either teak or mahogany. It's a 4 strip laminated design, 3 across and one on the bottom. I only use Neptonics reverse triggers and Rob Allen spears. The butts and handles are divers choice. The muzzle is a design that Kevin Bruington (Ocean Rhino Spearguns) designed years ago and is just a killer piece. He doesn't make them anymore (I wish he would). The other pieces are home shop made. I'm really considering in collaborating with a well know gun maker to produce a few of these guns. Trying to make it happen. Thanks for your interest. Best, Dan
Hey John. We stay out between 2-5 days, usually 3. No, I get my ice from another commercial operation. The 350's usually get about 1.15 nmpg at cruise, which is 22-30K based on sea conditions. Best, Dan

He also found an interesting story in the Tampa Bay Times where an article wS written about a near death experience you had with an 800 pound tiger shark. The news papers rarely ever get it right. Did you already get your quota on red snapper? I can't help but feel sorry for the gags you been nailing when there are so many reds around. I know high yield is what you're after but seeing stuff like this raises sustainability questions for me...
Brady, no worries. Commercial spear fishing for gags makes up a tiny percentage of the Gag quota. We do target the AR's, but I prefer to catch them on a Rod and Reel . On slower dives, I will of course spear them if they're around. Thanks for watching and for your comment. Best, Dan

My Dad gave me my first speargun when I was 10 Yrs. Thru my spearfishing life I thought that 45 to 60 Ft while snorkeling was a decent deph. To late learned that aphnea free diving could take me down to 100 Ft to spear. World record is more tha 300 Ft fin propeled dive. Almost 70 a bit late to improve free diving skills. Scuba my next goal. Fish beware. Almost a lifetime of diving fun

@@WillyK51 yep. I hear you. My husband has no problem free diving 250 feet down. no decompressing needed. It's just way too risky tank diving. There's a lot of factors in place.

On dives like this you need a helper just to carry extra shafts and string your fish. Although that might not be good for the local fish population.

My husband got certified when he was 18. His first time out, he got narced. Which was also his last time out. He's been free diving ever since.
