I understand that you used OoT to save certain bits of memory in the N64 expansion pack, based on all the movement you did and the filename in OoT right? But I don't get how you accessed/retrieved that memory while in Paper Mario, which you said don't use the N64 XP-pack, and how memory from one game can tell you to show credits in another game? Amazing and advanced stuff! Great run and awesome commentary!

Yeah it reminded me of a rumour for Jak and Daxter where you have to turn up the volume to destroy a level completely because you hear a weeping princess that you wouldnt hear otherwise and Jak just grabs a giant tree and smashes the place entirely.

The irony is that this run spawned because someone faked a skip, which led to people trying to do the same thing, ace was found and some mad lad suggested stop and swap, so it is actually kinda like that.

I feel that the staff has a bit nore leeway than they used to. In the Pokémon Emerald run, one of the Pokémon was supposed to be named "Edobean", but the runner made a typo and wrote "Edobeah".
During the run "N" becoming "H" became a running gag and the game was renamed as "Pokémoh Emerald" for the category "Ahy% Glitchless".
Nothing huge, but it's the small silly things.

So, basically, for anyone wondering: The speedrunners found a linked list (chain mail), convinced it that the next entry was in the wrong place (scratched out the address and wrote a new one), wrote their own data in (tore the envelope open and put a different letter inside), and then let it sit where they wanted until they needed it (mailed it to themselves).

The short of what I took from the commentary while not a runner myself of the game is this: You basically use OOT stagnant ram values during a hot swap in order to trigger a buffer overflow type glitch in Paper Mario and feed it the stagnant replacement values to get desired data load. If true... nice one.

    • @hhaavvvvii

The buffer overflow isn't triggered by the stagnant RAM values; rather they're just the payload the buffer overflow ultimately executes.
