@@dankdungeon5104 Yes, but in a popular game most runners will never get a WR, so improving a PB is a far more tractable goal. Way better psychologically to focus on getting better and better PBs than to dwell on repeatedly not getting a WR.
I’m sorry, but I cannot imagine that actually being true lmao. Every speedrunner dreams of a world record. I understand the point you’re making, but obv the focus is on a PB, because that is, nearly always, easier to achieve than the world record. It sounded more like he was extremely excited and misspoke and said ‘PB’ (because that is their focus, like you said, so he says that way more often) - like, the screaming ‘PB!’ reaction itself doesn’t even make sense in the context of a live audience. Most other runners might look unexcited because it’s difficult to show your emotion when you’re nervous, in front of a crowd and thousands of people at home (let alone the fact that many top runners aren’t as socially confident/comfortable to show no inhibitions)
TheShangryLlamas I noticed that also. Whoever was handling the clock dropped the ball there but I'm sure even with the 9 seconds (it stopped I think at 3:01 and he said at 3:10) 33:40 was probably a record.
Note that these are all recordings of a live stream. The audio, tech and visuals of both game and camera are going to be slightly out. So bare that in mind that you could get the signal that the time had stopped before the runner has said time, but he could have already said time. Just a possibility. Thankfully the runner now does time start/stop with a pedal for the most part so this is no longer an issue.

The excitement is kind of offset by the effort they put in. God knows how many other times they've run the game. And yeah, the competition pool being small also makes it less impressive.
Because getting the world record doesnt even mean that much, but reaching your personal goals. The moment you have WR, you lose the desire to keep playing that game, making it not even a 100% joyful experience.

I'm curious, what do you mean? I managed to catch some of this year's AGDQ live and watched a few of the runs on the GDQ YT channel, and everyone seemed to be having a great time. The runners, the chat, the audience. Even the Super Smash Bros. Melee runner, who had practically no audience and next to no donations during his run was still smiling and having fun.
Picture tons of popular and iconic speedrunners getting bannes fron the event for cursing or disagreeing with the organisers. Fucking around gets you banned there nowadays

There's a psychological phenomenon that occurs with practice effects in people. what you said about added pressure from being in front of a large audience is true most of the time, but when a person has a tremendous amount of practice doing a task, they can actually do better with an audience. This phenomenon is normally talked about in terms of professional athletes performing better in front of large audiences but it also generalizes to any task that someone becomes a master at through large amounts of practice. There are actually a large amount of world record runs that happen on GDQ which is suprising when you think about the fact that these runners are getting one chance live to do it and on any given night entire communities are taking multiple attempts a day to get a world record time. Love the video, take care!
I have never done a speed run and probably never will, but the one thing I love about speed running is the feeling of community within speed running. This top 10 showcases that.
I love watching people celebrate their victories. Gaming is something close to my heart, it's something I'm passionate about. So, these moments in history are special to me. Although the wider gaming community can sometimes be toxic, they can also be wonderful, and I still consider us all bound like family by this awesome pass-time.
lisamariefan AGDQ just set two WRs in a row a few days ago during their Bad Games segment. 4-person Nightmare on Elm Street for NES, and Rocky and Bullwinkle for SNES.
I remember watching a Jukspa video on the original portal where he managed to snag a world record, and when he realized his time, all he said was "Eh, an okay time I guess". Literally beat the game faster than anybody else in recorded history and just an "Eh".
The Minecraft one I remember watching when it first got uploaded to RUclips, I love it, the couch and (his brother I think?) were so supportive. It was a funny, action packed, wholesome run! Really was a great watch!
He just got banned from GDQ this year because of some stuff he said during his (incidentally incredibly entertaining) run at SGDQ 2016. He's one of my favorite runners to watch so it sucks. Hopefully he'll be back at the next SGDQ
I find it annoying how the speed runner keeps having to tell everyone is a world record before they applaud. I feel like everyone should be told beforehand or something or written down somewhere what the WR is so there's not that weird moment where everyone is sitting there and the runner has to let them know what they just did was good or not.
Joey Harder When I watch agdq I always have a tab open with speedrun.com . There you can fimd all current world records. But I agree with you, it should be indicated somewhere or acknowledged during the runs.
Joey Harder when they do these runs they don't expect to break any records not to mention while they're playing they're not looking at their time, why are you acting like what they're doing is a bad thing?
I'm not saying what the runner is doing is a bad thing. I'm saying I wish the event would organize it better to hype everyone up more so there's not a weird moment where the runner has to tell everyone they broke a WR instead of everyone knowing what the record was ahead of time. I think what jan409 said is a great idea.
Joey Harder true but I think they don't tell the actual live audience what the time is so they don't distract or stress out the player. It would be cool if on stream there's more information about best times and WR numbers but I think it's OK the runner and the audience don't know, knowing people there's a high chance they'll be dicks and purposely shout at them the time or give false time information
It's pretty satisfying hearing you give the WR time so I know how long left you are going to talk for. Not in a bad way; just satisfying. Note: I am absolutely zoomered out my glove box so this comment could make no sense in ~3 hours.
These runs are all awesome and congrats to the runners, but my favorite run < not WR > is PJ and his Ghost and Goblins any weapon pick up run. Very funny and entertaining to watch. Looking forward towards the next GDQ marathon.

Ah, well your statement made a good point overall ... so that's why the sarcasm didn't convey well. Have a good one!
djlowtek I guess I am that person, people never know if he's being serious or sarcastic. Thanks, you too :)
Ha. Actually saw the Minecraft speedrun, I think props go to the guy in the fleece jacket for how supportive he was.
Great list man. :) Love when the runners were like "Wait, what did you just say?"
8:06 it's kinda charming seeing this guy be more excited that he got a pb than a world record. this show's that improving himself is more important to him than being the best.
Man, I bet just being able to be there and participate is an amazing feeling for these guys. Let alone walking away with a WR and it then being documented in such a scale. All while helping charity?
I bet its an indescribable feeling!
3:22 blueglass is such a nice dude, fuck the haters
1:17 In the back: the "I'd really prefer if you'd be quiet" guy is clapping like he doesn't like to see other people succeed at things XD
The good old days when AGDQ wasn't a joyless shitfest
BANNED
and as the announcer, I will say no, that is not completely accurate.
I see. That's unfortunate. Though funny thing is, this year's AGDQ raised over $1 million more than last year, so something's going right.
3:12 they stopped the time way before he called time LOL I hope they corrected that shit. He must have been pissed when he found out.
I love how they're all super calm like "That's a world record." and THEN cheering ensues.
Does anyone know the sweater brand/name of the guy in the Minecraft run? I know its a weird question but that thing looks comfortable as fuck.
I don't know the sweater brand but that's RWhiteGoose.
Glad I'm not the only one lol RWhiteGoose is a good dude and a Goldeneye god - I LOVE that sweater, it looks so comfy! Anyone who knows PLEASE post any info about Goose's grandpa sweater haha
Echocookie search on Rwhitegoose's twitch page, he has the link to the store there, they're hella expensive tho
***** Well, shit. Did not expect to see you here. Now that I know the sweater brand, I might just have to pick one up. Keep doing you, man! Stay true, my friend.
+RWhiteGoose Thanks dude. I'll check out your stream too!
That shoulder rub at 3:20 is the weirdest thing I have ever witnessed
i was thinking that as well 😂😂
So gentle haha
Hahahahhaa
I'm so glad someone else noticed that 😂😂😂😂
9:15 The funniest thing of many time XD
Nice commentary and footage, subbed.
"Time, OH WAIT I DIED, I BEAT THE GAME?!?"
Pretty redudent to say it's a WR and a PB.
The WR might change between then and now and they might get a better PB after the run shown.
Paul Johnson she
i finished this video in 4:19 seconds...it was a new world record
Lol
did you have a smattering of bored-looking folks chilling behind you as well
If you optimize a 3:03 is possible with adblock
Ah, started in second gear?
I have never done a speed run and probably never will, but the one thing I love about speed running is the feeling of community within speed running. This top 10 showcases that.
Nice video, great job giving credits to everyone.
3:00 the time stopped early? Would it have still been a world record if it didn’t?
Wow you're right!
RIP bonesaw577 in GDQ :(
Wow!
"What was that time?"
"THAT'S A WORLD RECORD!"
*everyone cheers*
I love watching people celebrate their victories.
Gaming is something close to my heart, it's something I'm passionate about.
So, these moments in history are special to me.
Although the wider gaming community can sometimes be toxic, they can also be wonderful, and I still consider us all bound like family by this awesome pass-time.
Nothing like a WR on a game no one plays in a category that started existing 5 minutes ago
fr only minecraft was a main catagory
3:20 that creepy shoulder rub tho😲
I'd be shocked if WR happens in any recent GQG's with how much the times have been optimized in so many games.
With the vast number of unpopular speedrun games and categories WR's will still happen in future GDQs.
lisamariefan AGDQ just set two WRs in a row a few days ago during their Bad Games segment. 4-person Nightmare on Elm Street for NES, and Rocky and Bullwinkle for SNES.
Little Samson NES Normal All Stages WR was set at AGDQ 2017 also.
hey skul! XD
"GQG's"
Awesome Games Quickly Gamed
the fact that they are so calm getting a world record
I remember watching a Jukspa video on the original portal where he managed to snag a world record, and when he realized his time, all he said was "Eh, an okay time I guess". Literally beat the game faster than anybody else in recorded history and just an "Eh".
The Minecraft one I remember watching when it first got uploaded to RUclips, I love it, the couch and (his brother I think?) were so supportive. It was a funny, action packed, wholesome run! Really was a great watch!
Your videos sound much better now, better enunciation and quality.
11:00 rest in piss anime plushie
its actually from a game though
Reimu has fell.
3:05 they messed up the timing he hit the pad and they stopped the timer lmao
I love how the players get so much support. Great community
5:28 HOLY SHIT, that game looks ADORABLE!
Tavish DeGroot yeh the guy did a good job.
Thanks for leaving in the reactions.
RIP bonesaw
VildStyle what happened to him? Sorry I don't follow this scene that much.
He just got banned from GDQ this year because of some stuff he said during his (incidentally incredibly entertaining) run at SGDQ 2016.
He's one of my favorite runners to watch so it sucks. Hopefully he'll be back at the next SGDQ
VildStyle I'm pretty sure he is coming back in 2018.
+VildStyle what did he say?
Noose he say go talk shit about air Canada on their Twitter.
9:50 rip to the guy in the grey on the left lmao got left hanging haha
I find it annoying how the speed runner keeps having to tell everyone is a world record before they applaud. I feel like everyone should be told beforehand or something or written down somewhere what the WR is so there's not that weird moment where everyone is sitting there and the runner has to let them know what they just did was good or not.
current world record should be next to the estimated time
Joey Harder When I watch agdq I always have a tab open with speedrun.com .
Oh wow, you read my mind. I was just asking myself the other day "How many WRs have been broken at GDQ??"
whoa a world record. yep, mhm. i wonder what's for dinner
nothing
chicken
Universe Record
Rock me, Joey Santiago. Chicken dinner
Rock me, Joey Santiago. Ayyyy bowie
Trihex at the end Pog
9:23 "I've never seen this before! I beat the game!"
11:03 Holds the plush so it won't fall off, 11:05 stands up and drops the plush
These runs are all awesome and congrats to the runners, but my favorite run < not WR > is PJ and his Ghost and Goblins any weapon pick up run. Very funny and entertaining to watch. Looking forward towards the next GDQ marathon.
I love this so much, but it's also such an interesting look into how different people all respond to the sudden spontaneous emotional news. Fascinating
Lmao I love how awkward they can be, it's great
Number 8 he called time awhile after the clock stopped? Can someone explain?
The fact that we hit $2,000,000 this year is astounding!
Lonelykun Too bad less than 75% actually goes to preventing cancer.
*****
Go look up Prevent Cancer on Charity Navigator.
Jackson Steal jesus christ go fuck yourself
Seems from the recent reports it's at 75.4%, so now over 75% goes towards preventing cancer. Which is pretty good for a charity.
Why are these people so chill if I got WR I’d be going mad
loved the braid run. recommend watching the whole thing
Yup that's a world record.... ~Can i go now?
0:37 that dude in the front row had his girl in his lap and his arm around his boy. That's how you achieve maximum chilling.
They like:
A: Hey, you broke the World Record
B: Oh, thank you
wtf 😒
I love drinking during your videos. I take a shot every time you say world record.
The Spyro skip to Gulp in your outro blew my mind.
6:20 isn't that a guy??
Would be cool if they beat World Records on games that are played by more than 15 people
I feel like there should be a more official keeping of the world records than the person saying "That's a world record."
I was wondering if the Zero Mission Hard low% run would make the list. Glad to see it did.
