  • Chinese lenses has come a long way since I first encounter them back in 2015/16. From cheap manual lenses to high performing AF fast primes in the past couple of years. All represent value for money, pound per performance is unrivalled. The likes of Laowa is slowly positioning themselves as a premium Chinese lens maker and it's hint to what's coming in the next decade. Interesting time. So this video I will pick the best three Chinese makers base on my experience on using and reviewing them since 2015. Enjoy. #photography #omsystem #lens

I had a brief obession with fountain pens a few years ago, when I found out about the price and quality of chinese pens. So when I rediscovered photography, found I liked the manual lens exprience, and heard about the price and quality of chinese lenses, I thought 'no probs!'
Got the Brightin Star 35mm 0.95 for street, because an old f5.6 lens made me paranoid about aperture in gloomy climates. For some _daft_ reason I forgot that tightened in to 70mm on M4/3, so when I saw a good second-hand Zhongyi 17mm 0.95 for a good price, I looked at a few reviews and snapped it up. Lovely set of glass. I've currently got another Brightin Star lens on the way, a 60mm macro. I also have the 7artisans and Rockstar bodycap lenses, but I haven't done much serious shooting with those. Mostly waiting for sunnier weather.
Feeling a bit of GAS for Laowa lenses, especially the 7.5mm. No idea if I'd do much with it, but I want to see what a lens that wide does. Some other names I need to check out here, including Viltrox, if they pay more attention to M4/3. I'm also interested to hear about developments in autofocus and aperture, if you have any vids planned in future.

but lots of those Chinese lens marker stop making M4/3 mount.. I really hope viltrox af lens have release some m4/3 version, although they design for APS-C..such 75 f1.2.

I definitely think Viltrox should make some Micro Four Thirds portrait prime lenses since OM System won't.....

Having just got my first Viltrox lens (27mm /f1.2) for my A6700, I must say that I would have given the award to Viltrox. In a relatively short period of time, they have risen to the top tier of 3rd-party lensmakers. I look forward to adding more Viltrox glass to my nascent E-mount arsenal (I only got the A6700 in February). As for 3rd-party autofocus lenses for MFT, my hopes are not high. A scan of BH just now only turned up 6(!) autofocus lenses for MFT that weren't from Oly/OM or Panasonic (the classic Sigma trio and 3 from Yongnuo only one of which I would recommend (the 25mm f/1.7). If I were a manufacturer, I would rather design an APSC lens (as Sigma has done) since, with suitable remounting, a given design can go on the bodies of at least 3 manufacturers (Fuji, Nikon, Sony) and, put together, I think there would be more of them than MFT bodies. And good luck to a 3rd-party maker who wants to add MFT lens stabilization. They are going to have to deal with the non-compatibility of Panasonic and Oly/OM stabilization systems. This is an ancient rivalry, dating back to the first MFT cameras, and now I think it has become a serious impediment to MFT lens development. As I see it, APSC is now where it's at for progress in crop-sensor lenses. Said as a longtime MFT user.

    Hi! Another good video. 🙂
I've not tried as many manufacturers products as you, but I have the Sirui 24mm and 35mm Anamorphic lenses for MFT, which are great (superb build quality), and I have the Laowa 10mm 2.0 for MFT which is brilliant. So small and handy, so easy to stick in your pocket as a second lens. 🙂

Agree! Laowa is such a great company. Whenever I would like to shoot ultra wide, I go for Laowa 7.5mm and 10mm on M43. It would be a blissing to M43 shooters if they ever release an ultra wide zoom, like the 8-16mm f/3.5-5 APS-C counterpart and Laowa 12-24mm F5.6 FF counterpart. Please let Laowa know we need it. Thanks Jimmy!

Great revue...I have been using Chinese glass intermixed with my name brand lenses for the last 4 or 5 years...Currently I am moving back to "small" full frame gear...a pair of
Sony A7s bodies (mark 1) fills the bill...but I really love the Sony A7c mark 1 ( looking for a used one now. )...both OM systems and Panasonic seem to have stopped making Pen and GX style bodies...but Sony rocks on.!! cheers.

The 13mm Viltrox lens for Fujifilm and Nikon APSC is a great 20mm of equivalent lens. I found that the 75mm f1.2 works best at f1.4 for portrait shooting , it gives you just the right amount of depth of field especially when you're photographing couples or a mother and child. Another great video Jimmy.

Hello Jimmy, great video as you always do, thanks for it. Laowa are absolutely great in my opinion: I use on daily bases the 17mm f1,8, which is stunning, and I'll get the 9mm f2 soon (micro four thirds shooter). What about the Kamlan? I have the Kamlan 28mm f1,4 and it is special: it has that vintage photography flavour you mentioned, along with a great sharpness too. I also heard good things about the 21mm f1,8, but I never tried it.

I‘m not so much interested in other mounts besides mft. Still hoping for more mft lenses with AF or at least electronics. If it comes to full manual lesnses I still prefer original vintage glas.

Can you review of the Viltrox 35mm 1.8 vs viltrox 28mm 1.8?

I have had very good luck with TT Artisan, 50mm f1.2 and 35mm f1.4 that you illustrated. They are hard to beat for the price.

    I agree with you. Laowa is the best. I'm a m4/3 user. I also have a 7Artisans 35mm apart from Laowa 10mm .

That super modern-looking Laowa 10mm lens looks utterly daft on the Nikon Zf (performance notwithstanding).

Ttartisan lenses are so disappointing and the only thing Chinese made it right is the appearance not the glasses inside. Buying the cheapest vintage lens in the market can give you 100 times more satisfaction.
