- "When you're a master, you make it look easy...when it looks easy, it can get quite boring to people...when you see guys of marginal ability, they can't get out the way of each other...his style has evolved...he stayed true to the fundamentals," stated world-class trainer Virgil Hunter, who shared his thoughts on retired undefeated pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather. A man that knows boxing
No shit
💯
Man! What he said about Roy I've been saying for years. I would tell my students just enjoy Roy, but study Floyd. When your gifts go your fundamentals will keep you safe.
machinegunguitar well said.
machinegunguitar facts anyone who knows boxing knew that Roy was an athlete and not a boxer! Floyd disciplined therefore thinks he boring! But in my eyes watching him is a thing of beauty!
@@coach9410 Years ago, I ordered all of Mayweather's fights from beginning to Oscar. It was interesting to see how his career developed and how his skills improved. Haters say he runs, but looking at his later fights his inside game is unmatched. footwork, philly shell, faints, so much to study and apply.
Also, Floyd didn't fight that many dangerous opponents. + Quite a few of those fights that he won could've easily went the other way. Dude was nice though.
@@falsealarmno I feel like he fought many great dangerous fights. I agree some were really close. I mean he had to move up 2 weight classes to fight Oscar at 154lbs and that was a split decision victory. I had Oscar winning until he ran out of gas and Floyd crushed the championship rounds. Floyd vs. Cotto too. Floyd won, but I thought Cotto put in some great work. He busted Floyd's nose.
Watching Floyd fight is like watching a MLB Pitcher throwing a no-hitter. How the hell can you call that boring. You have to know and understand the fight game to appreciate the genius of Floyd Mayweather jr.
Excellent words!
Or been in a ring and understand how hard it is to be that successful at defense and counters
I think this was the best way of explaining it well said
I can listen to Virgil talk about boxing all day. So wise.
💯 he brought up and trained one of the best boxers Andre Ward
For those who don't think Floyd is exciting I'd recommend watching the first 27 fights of his career. He was 27-0 with 20ko which was the better half of his career. In his next 23 fights he only got 7ko because he was already past his prime and was fighting in bigger weight classes against naturally bigger men then he is. Floyd is the best 130lb 135lb 140lb and 147lb fighter of all time. At 154lb he showed the world he could still dominate the bigger men with almost nothing but defense. If you're a fan of greatness then please watch Floyd vs Ghatti & Floyd vs Corrales. Floyd vs Ndou was also a great fight.
💯 he evolved with what was required
Best at 135?

people wanna see boxers beat the shit out of each other get brain damage an leave the sport so they can forget about them an move to the next
I agree with the first part. but they want to see blood and then see the price paid for the sacrifice. they want to see the effects of dementia and see a fighter forget who he is or see him shake in a wheel chair like ali. then they'll start a charity and make t shirts to fund for his better health all because it's such a heartbreaking story... foh
+Brad Piff uh that's an exaggeration to say the least. out of all the greats, how many have brain damage? I can only name Ali.
peter rabbit if that's the only erson you know your a casual young Latino boxer I'd in the hospital fighting for his life now because of a blow to the back of his head I cant name him off top but Broner and a few others shouted him out its tons of boxers out there
Brad Piff what? I could barely understand what you wrote. I mean, from all the considered 'great' boxers, how many have brain damage? name them please
Brad you are a 100 percent right about that one. P.s.that's why I respect the sweet science that gives people.
Well explained. Floyd is not boring he's just so much better than the competition it looks like a man fighting a boy, which is not exciting in a sense, but he should be appreciated for how great he is. He just doing exactly what he supposed to and what every one else is trying to do and would if they could, win! Credit to Virgil for coming forward and saying this unlike any other trainer of any fighter beaten by Floyd recently.
+TJ Waldron - Yep!
well said my dude
+TJ Waldron I agree. To be honest with you, I can't understand all of these criticisms & innuendos about Floyd's style. He has never claimed to be a brawler, so what's beef about his style? I was never bored by him, simply because its not often you get to see boxing of that quality. But come to think of it, he's had his share of interesting moments -: He was in a war against Cotto, Hatton threw everything at him in their fight, including the kitchen sink, but he couldn't hit Floyd, & Floyd was seriously hurt against Mosely, & especially Corley, & he came back to win. He destroyed guys like Corrales, N'Dou, & Gatti, & even when he dominates with pure boxing, he actually lets fly with meaningful punches quite a bit. Okay, the Pacquiao fight was a stinker, but you can blame Pacquiao & his trainer for that - Pacquiao was hanging back waiting for counterpunching opportunities which never came, or maybe Pacquiao was worried about leaving himself open & becoming a highlight reel for Floyd. Whatever the reason, Manny didn't fight the fight he needed to, to win the fight. Floyd did what he normally does, he wasn't going to change, so it was up to Manny to make the fight. All these trainers who say that if you give Floyd nothing to counter, he's less effective, don't know what they're talking about.
+Space Alien ROFL! Ken Porter is not in his prime......nor someone Floyd has to fight. You must be talking about SHAWN Porter. Well Shawn Porter would have used the approach that Andre Berto tried except Berto is more skilled than Shawn and was a former two time world champion....and if you watched the fight of Berto against Floyd and you understand boxing you would realize how effective Berto was in spots against floyd and Floyd changed it up a bit to what he was doing. Do you know what a shotgun jab is? You you understand how effective it can be against a less experienced boxer?
Do you even know what it is to be shot in boxing?
Do you even know how Berto managed to KO Josesito Lopez and why?
If you can even begin to answer those questions then you are somewhat credible in your statements about the fight. Until then you are just a Space Alien to the sport. ROFL!
+Space Alien ROFL! You have no game....ROFL! You have no SHAME!
IV allegations false. USADA shut that down.
Floyd beat them all.....you salty. Paul Williams himself said Floyd is the KING. He only wanted to test his skills against the very best...Paul Williams said that.
Paulie was making fun of Manny and salt water healing him....more stupidness which you embrace instead of the fact that he lied.
Tell me why the Manny of 2008-2009 REFUSED to BE TESTED and the Manny of 2015 willingly accepts. WHO looks suspicious?
Mayweather is the only boxer to be tested rigourously by any Anti Doping body for so long from 2010 to 2015. The same rigourous testing Shane Mosely complained about....which Mayweather did as well.....the same that Manny did and agreed towards doing.
USADA has been successful in bringing down the Balco scandal in 2003...it was their labs which were responsible to bring down the case...before USADA such doping was going on rampantly in sports. Shane Mosely was linked to that case....USADA also able to get Lance Armstrong to admit to cheating....USADA was not around before such cheating began...they came on the scene in 2000. Such cheatings began in the late 80's early 90's to the mid-2000's. VADA has come on the scene in 2011 and has had a few false positive tests done.....one such case is the one with Andre Berto who was tested with a FALSE positive and VADA submitted a statement clearing him as the result was due to CONTAMINATION.
So your claim that Berto is juicing is also FALSE.
However Pacquiao and his team's inconsistent statements on his injury have been the worst set of BS we have had to put up with including the fact that they are being sued at present for perjury in his statement that he was well on his form but later saying he was not. Bob Arum is trying to smooth the water and all Pacquiao kept on doing is messing it up. PR gone south. No pun intended.
This man is very intelligent!!!

@@eddyalvarez2078 Slow down sir, If you don't like Mayweather just say that. You guys come up with several reasons why Mayweather isn't the best ever but you make yourselves sound silly. Ever real sports analyst knows Mayweather has a record of 26 consecutive wins in world title fights (10 by KO), 23 wins (9 KOs) in lineal title fights, 24 wins (7 KOs) against former or current world titlists, 12 wins (3 KOs) against former or current lineal champions, and 3 wins (1 KO) against International Boxing Hall of Fame inductees. Record is undisputable. Manny is a good fighter but never was on Mayweather's level. Remember he was knocked out by Marquez a fighter Mayweather destroyed. Manny has been Knocked out 3 times. Nah bruh stop comparing
Man!! I said the same thing about Roy Jones jr. I loved him as an amazing fighter, but he got away with so much because he was so fast and explosive , he didn’t need to practice fundamentals, hence watching him work on the spinning boxing target , showing his defense was way off. Mayweathers defense is smooth , his balance was on point and when using your mind instead brute strength allows you to anticipate what the opponents would do before he did it , and also knowing how to fight through adversity, which Roy didn’t know how to do , hence his ko defeats . Being a trainer myself , I’ve always liked Virgil Hunters training techniques. He’s one of the great trainers ...The problem with fighters these days are , the lack of quality trainers. Everyone who puts on mitts and watches fights believes he’s a great trainer . Or the fighters have people in their corners (yes men/women)but The fighters are training themselves . It’s why old fighters can keep up with most young fighters , hence the old champs contemplating on returning .
the realest shit i heard in boxing in years
It's the same way Tim Duncan was dominating in the NBA at one point with his fundamental. He was a boring player to watch but look how he took the Spurs to championships along with the other players on the Spurs who he had helping contribute. Point is in any sport the fundamentals get u the win & sometimes dominate as boring as they are. No different from what Floyd does winning fights on points & not taking much risk. It's boring but it gets the job done

Great video. intelligent words from the HOF trainer Virgil Hunter, but it doesn't matter. It will make absolutely no difference. They will hate and call him names regardless. Because they are not boxing fans, they are fans of a boxer. PERIOD. real boxing fans appreciate and love Floyd Mayweather. Fuck everybody else.
I love watching Floyds bouts more than anyone else, true boxing fans would too. It’s the know nothings and wannabes that just want to see a brawl. I love watching his brilliance and his ring iq.

wise words from a man that knows boxing and life..
Floyd making fighters naturally bigger than him by like 20 pounds and shit look easy, he is definitely one of the most consistent fighters I have witnessed, consistency in terms of career wise and in the ring. Floyd mayweather is a old school fighter but some of these stupid fans think old school fighters just go toe to toe and shit, mayweather got a old school stance and knows a lot of old school tricks opponents can't deal with, defensive genius and 20 30 years from now the next generation gonna be talking about him like a all time great. I mean ray Leonard and all those guys had haters and if social media was around then and in Ali's time they will be getting the same hate mayweather gets, Ali would be called a runner by these same fans who call Floyd a runner
Ali did it with more style though. Prettier footwork.
@@roywall67 the question is not how good you look but how good does it work, floyd cares about being the best and nothing else and people pick ali over floyd as a human being which is fine but pure boxing floyd is the best with his skills
"....when you see guys with MARGINAL ability they cant get out the way of each other so they gonna hit each other...."💯
Punch drunk CASUALS take note...🤔
maybe bonehead fake boxing fans will realize this years from now after they stop hating. No one has been talented enough to force Mayweather into a war type fight. It really does mean he IS great and has the "sweet science" figured out like no one else. It's factual. Everyone has lost trying, almost 50 fighters... so who's fault is it? It's not Floyd's. It's just 2 guys in the ring with a ref... it's up to themselves to figure out how to win. But people would slice their wrists before admitting anything positive when it comes to Mayweather. All because he chose to play the role of the villain for entertainment way back right before the Oscar De La Hoya fight and has somewhat kept doing so on purpose... but new comers to the sport don't know about that.
+KontryBoy706 - You said it!!!
Church!!!
finally someone else who understands
+KontryBoy706 Fighters who were hated in their primes tend to be respected later on in their retirements. A decade from now the general public will forget all about these " boring" allegations. Willie Pep from the 50s & 60s was never an exiting fighter, & I'm sure he would have copped a bit of criticism because of his defensive style, but these days his reputation as a defensive fighter has reached legendary status.
kufujitsu - I think that will be the case here. Too bad he can't be appreciated while he's fighting or while he's living (should he face this type of criticism for the rest of his life).
Great interview. He was so humble and insightful! Bless him!
Mayweather masters boxing down to the science no flaws throwing them hands🥊
I've listened to this at least 7 times. This man is genius when it comes to boxing analysis!
Powerful words of wisdom here. And the important aspect of fundamentals don’t just involve the likes of athletes and boxers, but in any craft you can apply these words to.
No doubt Floyd is tbe truly inspirational, could listen to Virgil all day
A measure of greatness for a boxer to me is when the Trainers and fellow fighters speak on what you are with respect (not fans/reporters)...Outside of Pac, Roach, Cross-dressahoya, and a Fame Seeker not even in the sport who is saying Mayweather isn't the best of his time?
It is a shame Floyd is measured only by the last years of a 20 year career (amateur/pro)...he beat guys in every way and took minimal punishment in the process and made the most money in a sport where promoters and governing bodies have been using up and wiping their asses with the athletes for decades.
Floyd not only beat each opponent in the ring he more importantly beat the system and is racking in hundreds of millions of dollars out of it.
How do you hate that?
+kudabeen white people suffer from a deep insecurity of black males . Please tell me you are not oblivious to the obvious racial context of the Floyd Mayweather hate . It's jealous white people hating on a man in a sport they do not even fucking like .... C'mon man .
Also all those things you listed are the exact reason they fucking hate him . He has no white coach, no white promoter/handler and is his own fucking man . Whites hate that .

People who say Floyd is boring must have only seen his fights since the Showtime deal and forget that he's fighting bigger guys and has brittle hands. Floyd at 135 lbs and down is fucking brilliant and must see t.v. As of late, he has coasted, so I understand why people call him boring.
Yeah, people have to judge him as a fighter from the time he started all the way to his retirement. You can't cherry pick certain years and say he sucks just because he slowed down. There came a time when Michael Jordan stopped dunking on people. That doesn't make him any less of a legendary basketball player. Mayweather has a career KO percentage of 53% which is only 5% lower than Pacquiao's career avg. Those are comparable numbers which means Floyd's not boring.
yeah hes old now, he has to change his style to adapt. they must know about prettyboy floys
+Paul Harris Floyd
+TopShelf Exactly, if Floyd had never moved above 135 lbs and had never seriously injured his hands, he would have been KOing soo many more guys.
+TopShelf Thats one of the most true statement out there. when you fight guys 15-20lbs on you with brittle hands you can't play rock em shock em robots.
Best explanation. The analogies are spot on.
What a great interview. His break down on Roy was on the money.
Props to Virgil Hunter for telling it like it is: Mayweather is just THAT GOOD. The truly great ones make hard fights look easy. Say whatever you want about FMJ, but he's undefeated and has a resume stacked with future HOF fighters.
Well said….every anology was on point
He speaks the truth look at Mayweather fights. He’s mastered his craft so well he can fight a whole boxing 🥊 match and rarely get hit. To bloodthirsty boxing 🥊 fans that would seem boring but that’s what the sport is about. To land as many punches as you can and avoid as much or all contact from your opponent as possible. Plus he’s learned the business of boxing 🥊 as well to the point where he’s darn near a billionaire! Give credit where credit is due.
Virgil dont blink man!!
Floyd ain't boring if you know what you're watching, simple as. The things he was able to do in that ring were nothing short of incredible. Hell, even an experienced eye has to watch him in slow motion at times because he's doing to much it's unreal. One of the best jabs ever in boxing. Gotta say that because I don't hear enough people talk about it. Pros like Anthony Joshua go to Floyd for advice on how to jab.
very nice to hear truth and knowledge. great interview and I agree 100% but Floyd has as many people that love him and appreciate his mastery as many that hate him and call him boring because they don't know what mastery looks like
Talking that shit lots of gems here🙌🏽💪🏾
Perhaps the most intelligent commentary on boxing that I've heard. Floyd makes it looks easy. He made the dismantling of Canelo look so easy. And he's 100% correct in saying that less skilled fighters can't get out of each other's way. Ward vs. Gatti is the perfect example. Very entertaining to watch for fans, but the truth is that they both were much less skilled than Floyd. Gatti and Ward cannot fight like Floyd because they don't have Floyd's skills. Ward wouldn't lay a glove on Floyd. Floyd would be countering him all night long and would just pot shot him at will. And the same goes for fundamentals. Roy Jones Jr. had superior athletic skills. He was fast and explosive. But, as soon as he started getting older, and he lost his speed, he had nothing to offer. Contrast this to Michael Carbahal. Carbahal has SOLID boxing fundamentals. His hands are always up. He punches properly, and bring his hands right back to his face. He uses his jab, he goes to the body, he has good footwork, good head movement, and he's never off balance. This allowed Carbahal, in the later part of his career, even when he lost some speed, to still hang with Jorge Arce. Not just hang with Arce, but KO him.
Fantastic interview!
The most knowledgeable information I’ve ever learned about boxing. Fundamental
I would loved to get trained by Virgil Hunter he keeps it 100 that's just what I like
Some of the best words every spoken!!
What makes a boring fight is relative to whoever is watching it. You got a lot of guys who just want see two dummies get in the ring and punch each other's lights out.
Then you have guys who appreciate the true craft of boxing. When you really study boxing a senseless brawl can be a boring affair. I personally like to see skill being displayed.
True also back in the day alot more youngg men tried a bit of boxing once that era ended and boxing was taken out of schools people stopped appreciating how difficult it actually is. Once some had done a few rounds Thier mindset changes.
Oh I learned this exact same thing when I was a kid I started out I got hired to wash some plastic pipes for a company the owner told me that it was about 2 to 3 weeks worth of work after that he couldn’t promise me anything I worked my ass off without even taking a breath and I finish the job in one day 18 months later I was running the company 24 months later I own my own company I ran my own company for 30 years became a multi millionaire and I could honestly tell you it came from washing some plastic pipes with the sponge and a bottle brush and when I finish that job sweeping the floor afterwards while they were trying to find something else for me to do the owner of the company came up from the big office upstairs stuck out his hand shook my hand and said as long as I’ve got work you’ve got a job I have never seen anyone work like you true story. The other guy they hired to wash pipes have been there for two weeks he was doing two cases of pipes these are plastic pipes a day I finished what they consider three weeks worth of work based on his speed in one day I was the best damn plastic pipe washer he had ever seen and then the best damn floor sweeper he had ever seen this man is speaking knowledge you get a job cleaning the bathroom you clean the bathroom the cleanest it’s ever been the first it’s ever been And if the boss doesn’t give you another chance you go somewhere where they recognize talent

The fact is there are boxers and there are fighters Mayweather is a boxer👌🏽
@Ericston Sloan facts without truth can be dangerously misleading, fact: all boxers fight, but not all fighters box, and fewer still box as well as mayweather, but let's be clear he i every bit a fighter as any "blood and guts" warrior you can name, duran chavez, gatti etc, he assumes the same risk, and has to use the same tools to achieve his objective (you can't win a fight by slipping punches) you gotta hit your opponent, and that is the truth, "truth" is the tapestry that weaves the facts together in order for them to make sense✌🏾

@Themachinegun Absolutely I've said it all over youtube RJJ was a talented once in a lifetime fighter but he took advantage of his speed and his natural gifts. He'd lead with hooks uppercuts hooks to the body overhands something we never saw, then when he got older and lost speed and reflexes he started getting caught and stopped. Had he been a fundamentally sound fighter he could return to that but sadly he never had that in his bag. I also use Bernard who was slow had little power but was so damn crafty which allowed him to fight at 50…
I wish those Roy Jones fans were tuned in.. I tried to explain that same theory on Roy Jones to his insane fans.. If he would have learned the basic fundamentals of boxing he would have been a much better fighter.

According to you Bernard was a bum. Beats a prime James toney another so called “bum”. Gets robbed in the montel griffin fight comes back and knocks him out. Beats Ruiz in a heavyweight match. He dominated all of these fighters but according to you they are all bums.
Speak Own_knit who cares he fought to finish his opponents. Unlike defensive fighters “Floyd” who fought to survive and win by decisions.
@@carlostorres8771 When Floyd fought, Gatti, Diego Corrales and others a "defensive" fight? You have not seen Pretty Floyd's career when he was TAKING out his opponents. Also, boxing is the "sweet science" hit and NOT to get hit which floyd mastered; that is, the Money Mayweather in the end of his career was more defensive.
When you’re at master at what you do , you make it look easy . That’s why the great put in time to perfect their craft and practice the fundamentals, so I. The long run I’m, the wizards can remain at the top of their game

Who said Floyd’s fights aren’t exciting?? Who are these fans that can’t appreciate watching boxing at the most elite level? When you watch a chess match you don’t say it’s boring because one opponent may take his time to think during the match- you grow in anticipation and understand a master is at work. Go back to the UFC with that.
The fights are not exciting to those who wanted to see Floyd lose. To those who enjoy boxing and really study the sport, it’s exciting to see someone with that level of skill just totally dismantle someone purely using his skills, preparation, and mental ability to anticipate everything his opponent will do and nullify any strengths their opponent has and do it so seemingly effortlessly. That is also exciting. But again only exciting to those who love and enjoy the sport. It will never be exciting to those who just want to see Floyd lose or get touched up.
