Hi! Just sharing our experience growing vegetables and herbs. We live on an island as well, our house is just 8 meters away from the sea. We tried propagating basil and mint from a mother plant we were able to buy at a plant shop. The seedlings were placed INSIDE our house. They wouldn’t root. So after several failed attempts, we decided to grow them up in the mountains. Whatdyaknow, they propagated without any issue! Turns out it’s the salt water in the air “burning” the leaves and stems. So maybe try to grow them as far from the sea, if possible?😊

    • @aydapadistudio

Just adding that propagating moringa and papaya seem to not be an issue, even near the sea. 😊

Best system is Aquaphonics, raise Tilapia, , a few pumps and some PVC Pipes and a few large plastic barrels or steel reinforced plastic tanks and you are in business. Lettuce in the Philippines can be a high value crop, one guy does that in Luzon, he has a raft aquaponics system, lettuce growing in Styrofoam cups on rafts..

    1. It's meant to be situated in a levelled place. Also, try to make sure the set up is protected from rain water so as not to mess up the water - solution ratio. Speaking of water, if there's a way you can store rain water, that'll be best to use for the system. Rain water has so much nutrients than tap water.
    2. As early as now, try to buy a black shade net to protect the leaves from leaf burn.
    3. Also procure a larger basin. As the plants grow bigger, their water requirement will increase. Buy a basin that's can block sunlight from coming in. Algae will be your main problem if the basin can't repel the sun.
    4. Pechay, Mustard leaves, and Kangkong are the easiest to grow. Better if you will just do cut outs of stems of kangkong you buy in the market. The Chinese kangkong seeds that are bought from lazada are of different variety. They don't produce as much leaves.

You only need to a brunch of the malunggay tree. Easy to propagate the malunggay and you can use for your food for your tea and can be use in your smoothie too.

We have had some success with Basil, so it will grow here. I have been thinking about hydroponics particularly for lettuce. You have spurred me to get on and do it. I've seen an HP system running from a fish tank. The system pumps the water carrying the nutrients produced by the fish to the plants and returns the water to the tank. You ought to have a pond at your new property. Perhaps then you can use the water from that to run through your HP system.

Congratulation on getting your new gardening equipment I am surprised that it has taken you 3 years to do this but I am sure you could have done this a lot cheaper and getting good advice from the local people on how you do this .
Well Jay I am sure by now you have an idea where about you are building your new home so have you started clearing the area with your new trimmer and planning what trees may have to be cut down then you can start planning your garden area of Vegetables and flowering plants well if you plan to move into your new home by the end of the year it is now April and time goes very quickly and another thing you have to take into account the different climate seasons.

Once you use your it and learn about PH and conductivity you will realize that growing without the pump and just using a bucket with water, nutrients and the seedling in rock wool or equivalent is the easiest way to grow. I can send info if you want to look at it. I also started with a kit so its a great way to learn.

In Canada I grew Swiss Chard, Pechay , and Collards hydrponically, if you add an aquarium and tilapia into the mix you got an Aquaphonics setup , I know you are vegetarians , so sell the fish or raise goldfish or Koi, fish poop are natural nutrients for the veggies ,do some research on Aquaphonics . If you just harvest the leaves from the plants like the lettuce or pechay daily for self use, the plants will keep growing for months, never ending it seems, until it goes to seed.Aeroponics and Hydroponics & Aquaphonics - the future of sustainable farming in a limited space / environment, Aquaphonics is also almost " organic" as the fish give the plants nutrients - eliminate need for chemical fertilizers , if you have netting or greenhouse no need for Pesticides. Happy farming!

Oh that was fun. We have person run hydrophonic system at Half Moon Bay which is about 2 miles by the Pacific Ocean. The trick is he had it indoors in somehwat an agricultural tent the greens grew in a self sustaining pond. He grew all kinds of greens, alsmost no soil. The plant grew in what looks like styrofoam. Make sure to wash the veggies very well as when these are established, with water other life forms come in.

Fun fact: you can grow apples in the Philippines if you want. Even in the hot lowlands. Just keep the seeds in a moist tissue paper for around 2 months in the refrigerator (not the freezer). Once it starts to sprout, transfer it to a pot, then once it has several leaves, transfer to the ground.

I actually just read an article about the "Kapatagan Apple Orchard" here in the Philippines where they grow apples. The farm is located at the rolling foothills of Mount Apo which has a cooler weather.

    • @AngryKittens
      @AngryKittens Год назад

@@rm_alfaro I'm on the hotter lowlands. So it's a bit of a struggle to keep the sprouts alive. But once the seedlings are established, like a foot or so high, and the bark has formed, they don't seem to have a lot of problems with the hotter climate. But then again, I'm still waiting for them to fully grow.
I read about him about a year ago. I actually didn't know about him until after I had already started trying to grow apples.

If you have chlorine in your water, let it sit and disappear.
Check the conductivity of your water and that is subtracted from the added nutrients.
The EC of nutrient water should be around 1.2 or so - ie not very concentrated.
If it rains it will dilute the nutrient solution if the rain water has access to the holes.
also need to check the PH of nutrient solution. I keep mine at 1.8-2.0
Bok choy and swiss chard is super easy to grow, spinach gives me most problems
