As a mouth breather, but nose cushion user, I've taped for about 3 years now. I use the 3M Nexcare Sensitive skin tape, it's blue, on a blue spool. I tear it in half lengthwise & then about a 1.5 long strip. Put the strip up & down across my lips. Yes, sometimes there's a bit of leakage at the edges, but not enough to be an issue. If you really open your mouth, it pops off, so I'm not worried about an emergency. I don't use the humidifier. A spool is about $5-7 USD and lasts me about a year.

I hated it, I woke up every morning drooling (even if I poked a hole with my tweezers in the middle) or it was completely removed stuck to my shoulder.
Instead I like somnifix set at all an angle, or Japanese anti-snore tape (goes on vertical). I just bought dryft to try, it's similar to somnifix but looks thinner. (Porous tape a third of an inch wide would work too, but that blue tape did not work as all for me, horizontal, diagonal or vertical. It also left me looking like I had thinly waxed my upper lip or used lipliner outside the line) for readers who are thinking about using blue tape, I've seen a lot of guys say it works for them (or use hostage tape™), I am female with a full lips (and I don't need to wax my upper lip 😏, I am a typical translucent ginger so my skin does redden/look irritated very quickly). I am also not a mega mouth breather, but I'm used to wearing a tap3 two piece dental appliance instead of cpap and it causes your mouth to slightly open so that's my trained sleep state).
If you have a severe mouth breathing issue stronger tape might be necessary to keep you from opening (if you really really need strong tape imho it's better to switch to a full mask and see am ENT). Also, Jason (lankylefty) gets stubble so I think he's going to need a stronger product.

I started taping after watching Jasons older video. It helps. If you really want to understand what is going on I would highly recommend getting a “PAP” analysis. I just did this with Jason. Money well spent. I’m already making changes that are helping me! Doing a follow up with Jason in a few days.

I have been watching you for a couple years now. I bought the tape strips you showed in this video and was noticing that I had a TON of moisture in my mouth and on my lips by the tape. I am using a Resmed AirSense 10 with the climate tube. I had the humidifier on auto when I noticed this problem. I am changing the settings today to 1. Thank you so much for these videos. @@conman20000 So, I quit using the mouth tape as I could not get rid of the nasty moisture around my lips and mouth. I went back to using the ResMed AirFit P-10 mask and a neck pillow. I turn the neck pillow to where the opening in the back and the fat part under my chin. I combined this setup with a good pillow and It has kept my mouth shut. The tape definetly kept me from waking with dry mouth, but I HATED the moisture around my mouth.

THANK YOU for this suggestion Jason. I tried the Cover Roll tape which works well to stick lips together, but don't like the fact that it's permeable and lets a little air in and out. I like to sleep on my back and still get a dry mouth with this tape in place because it stretches enough to let my lips separate slightly, even with a soft cervical collar, and thus allows that little bit of airflow through it, which adds up over the night. So I reverted to the one method that seems to work for me - put lips together, cover acroos mouth with a piece of one and a half inch wide athletic tape (Walgreen's...cheap) and then wrap a length of inch and a half wide self adhesive stretch bandage (like the stuff they put on after you have blood drawn - it's cheap online also) over the athletic tape and lapped a couple of inches in back of the neck to secure it, which keeps the non-breathable athletic tape in place all night.

I too use tape. I found what works for me is the 2 inch 3M Duropore. I buy it on Ebay for about 18 bucks for 6 10 yard rolls. If I use any kind of nasal mask I will blow any kind of tape right off my mouth. A couple of years ago I switched to a FP Simplus, full face mask. It may sound crazy but even with the full face mask I wake up with a dry, irritated throat. If I use tape and the full mask, my problems are solved.

    • @Sue333999333

I use a full face mask and also tape my mouth shut with 3M Transpore tape. It sticks like crazy so you really have to peel it off in the morning. Without the tape I get desert mouth! I also get chipmunk cheeks using the tape but I'm used to that. I do agree with you that the Somnifix is crap. That used to work for me when my settings were lower (9), but now that they go up to 13, I would wake up with the tape half off my face. Then I had an even worse problem! I was diagnosed with angular cheilitis! Symptoms include very painful sores in one or both corners of the mouth. Excess moisture on the lips or mouth can lead to the condition and usually little kids who drool get this! Oh man! Has anyone else had this happen? (whether diagnosed or not), That's when I started using the 3M transpore tape and it works like a charm!

I've been using Nexcare Sensitive tape for over a year with my humidification on auto and rarely have an issue with it coming loose. My trick is to make sure the whole area around my face is freshly cleaned with no moisturizer residue, then I purse my lips together and make sure my jaw is closed before applying the tape.

Thanks for the cover-roll stretch take recommendation (a year ago). It was a total game changer. I sometimes use Leukotape P Sports Tape instead. It is highly similar to CRS, but is skin-colored and doesn't have an adhesive backing. For better or worse, it features a strong-hold zinc oxide adhesive, which is antibacterial and reportedly helps to maintain skin health.

My wife is hypersensitive to any tape adhesive and mouth leaks have been a problem since she started CPAP therapy 10 months ago. She Hates full face masks. She is currently using an Air Fit N30i with the flat under the nose nasal mask, since the pillow style that enters the nostrils also hurts her. Our best answer so far to address mouth leaks is to fold a bandana into a triangle. Then continue folding in three inch segments until just a corner extends beyond the folds. Tie the folded bandana around the head and follow that up with a standard chin strap under the bandana and chin. The strap over the bandana firmly holds the bandana in place and in turn holds the lips closd. Win. A nice plus.... if she needs to talk she still can.

Hey Jason, love your videos they have been extremely informative and very entertaining. Much appreciated!! I have been taping at your recommendation for a couple of months now. It has really helped with the leaks. Had a recent sleep study and the tech told me taping was dangerous due to CO2 buildup. I asked him if that were the case for people who were not mouth breathers (did they build up CO@ as well since their mouths were shut) and he had no response. Guys, I`ve been trying hard on a nasal pillow and chin strap. Can`t get used to taping my mouth. Is using a FFM really that worst? Thanks a lot.

Use what you are comfortable with. Is it possible that you can't get used to taping because you aren't on the correct pressure?

@@Freecpapadvice that`s a valid question. What I feel is a sort of claustrophobia. Thanks again for your answer.

I've been trying to use tape, but when air gets into my mouth my cheeks balloon out and I wake up. Any ideas?

I get this from Amazon cover roll stretch I highly recommend it to anyone matter of fact it's so good I have to put it on my skin and take it off a couple of times not on my face sometimes even my shirt a couple of times just the weekend the glue a little bit I really really like it I also crimp the left side so if I have to take it off in an emergency I have no trouble I think it's the best I've used all the rest that's okay you can thank me later

I use full humidity and the tape (medical plastic tape) sticks very well.

$30 for a box of 28! It is rediculous to spend that when there's there is another way! You are the man, keep educating us!

For the past two weeks I've had a perfect ResMed My Air score of 100 every night.
Everything changed when I started using Cover-Roll Stretch tape after watching Jason's mouth taping video, especially the part starting at 1 min 55 secs. It only took me a night or two to adjust, now honestly it feels normal. There's very slight discomfort when pealing off the tape in the morning. Only regret is I had to shave off my beard😫.
I'm definitely NOT suggesting everyone should try this, just that it sent my scores rocketing up to a perfect 100 on ResMed's My Air app EVERY night since I started taping.
I pre-cut my strips 15 cm, 6", 3 squares, long. At about 2m 14s Jason mention putting a "dog ear" at one corner of the tape. As I cut longer than Jason that gives me room for a "fold back" at each end of the tape to facilitate removing the tape in the morning and if it ever became necessary to remove it during the night.
Taping is working out much much better than I was expecting! Probably not for everyone but really great for me.
