Not all dogs that chase deer have a high prey drive and want to hunt and kill, herding dogs also commonly do it but don't go in for the kill.
Deers are so serene & beautiful. Elks are too.

Euthanizing dogs just because they follow their natural instincts? That’s a bit unacceptable. All dogs have that drive to chase and hunt prey, and seeing as dogs are descended from wolves, it’s only natural that they would chase deer, as that is the primary prey of their wild cousins.

Fenton was only doing what he was bred for. Rounding up animals. He wasn't intent on hurting them. Why did BBC have to make out he was going to hurt the deer? I've watched the original video many times and always enjoy it.
Exactly, mine is a herding breed and he has chased after deer a few times, but never with an intention to hurt them, and always ran back to me.

This is something my dog would do. He's a sheep dog so he's useless on lead and off.
Sheep dogs are likely to be interested in herd of animals but herding breeds in general were designed for the exact purpose of being off the lead in the hills. Perhaps him not being very good off the lead isn't because of his breed?

Please note it's a Border Collie...it's instinct is to HERD. My dog is very well trained. But if she gets on to some deer, that adrenaline seems to keep in or something. She's getting better...but can't be trusted no matter how well she performs otherwise.

Some dogs are a menace in Richmond Park and some owners are thoroughly irresponsible. I've seen dogs chasing deer, ducks, geese and swans many times while the owner just stands and watches.
I've had dogs run up to me when I tried to avoid them and get their mucky paws all over my skirt --- when the park rules say ALWAYS ON A LEAD. The owners/parents acted as if I were peculiar to be annoyed at being beset by their dogs. I love my dog second to none but she never bothers anyone, never mind dirtying their clothes....

People make jokey comments about this being a bit of a laugh but quite recently a seal was savaged by an off lead dog in London and had to be put to sleep because his flipper was damaged really badly. Out of control off lead dogs are no joke, they can be a bloody nuisance!

+L. J.P. no they won't. If they are viscious they should be muzzled anyway. My dogs are gentle and very well trained. They don't need to be on a leash. Same for a lot of dogs

+L. J.P. Trouble is people tend too think that they have full control over dogs no matter what the situation and they let the dogs off the lead because they can be trusted, or at least they believe. Sadly these over confident owner can often find out the truth the hard way and the dogs break away from the training they have received and natural instinct kicks in. All dogs should be on a lead in public places not only for others safety but for their own.
