We once mentioned a vet appointment at the house and my dog whimpered and started shaking and tried to hide, and it wasn't even for him, it was for the cat. We ended up getting a vet who did house calls which made a HUGE difference in our dog's emotional state, he was so much more calm being in his own home (he actually ended up enjoying seeing her enter the house b/c he knew he was going to get more attention), not having to have that anxiety drive, the vet fawned over him the whole time and the "treats" he got throughout his evaluation (that they normally do) were his actual favorite treats because they were from home, it cost only it little bit more, but it saved him so much less anxiety and us having to deal with getting him in the car and attempting to get him into the vet (sometimes they would do a quick check-up on the cat for free since they were there, which was nice)

I'd like to add that the additional expense is VERY worth it when needing to have a pet put to sleep. I've been through both scenarios many times and the potential trauma spared on you both is worth so much.

@@danieladelcastillolocatell5839 I never had a dog, but when I had to take my cat to the vet to get her teeth cleaned she wouldn't stop crying. Since it was a pretty late appointment and we were the only ones in the lobby I took her out and set her on my lap and she calmed down after a few pets and hugs. She was actually very well behaved when meeting the vet and she never fussed when she got vaccines just so long as I scratched her behind the ears during the shot, she never yowled or even hissed. If she was about to get an injection and I forgot to pet her she would glare at me until I got the hint and start scratching behind her ears 😅

OK - so the craziest thing my vet tech told me was that animals (esp. dogs) can smell death inside AND outside of the vets office because of the pets that are euthanized. Their terror is real and there's a real reason for it!

    • @SneakyCheeseThief
      @SneakyCheeseThief 8 месяцев назад +74

It’s very true. You see the same absolute terror on dogs at shelters a lot of times when they’re being taken home. They think they’re going to be killed. They know what happens, they can not only smell it, they can sense it on the humans that work there too. Human moods change when an animal is put down. Even vets who have been doing it a long time (I know many large animal vets who still cry every time a horse is put down). They’ve even had to take steps to counter this with cadaver dogs even. Between the realization that what they find each time is a dead human, and the reaction to that in their handlers, they’ve started to remove dogs and handlers from the scene well before they begin to recover the bodies. Otherwise most cadaver dogs will become depressed. Dogs are extremely sensitive to death - dog death especially, but any kind of death. I’ve been around animals my whole life, and dogs understand it better than any other species. Most animals have visceral, evolutionarily conditioned fear when they smell it - you see it in horses especially. But dogs have a deep understanding of death being what it is - final, tragic, usually painful. It’s heartbreaking.

The towels being put down for the dog to walk on is because the dog more than likely is a senior dog and has arthritis, it's hard for the dog to walk on the slippery floor so the towels give the dog something for the paws to grip and makes walking easier on the dog. I work at a vet and we have rugs and towels in every room specifically for this reason. Some owners even bring their own rugs or mats from home to help the dog be able to walk into the clinic and get on the scale easier.

I went yesterday with one of mine, a nightmare. It took 2 vets a nurse and myself for them to get a blood sample and check her over and over 20 minutes before they got the sample.

My English never complained going to the vet, he understood it was for his own good, he had several surgeries but finally he passed away because he was just too old. we were sad we had to put him into permanent sleep but his life's quality was lost so we decided.

I remember my cat reaction after coming home from the vet after her annual shot. She could master classes in giving the cold shoulder. She was mad for several days.

One 100+ lb dog is easier to transport to the vet--and you get a little working doing it--than two 10 lb cats.
They're smart. Last two times they got in the carrier were 1) neutering appointment, and 2) rabies shot appointment.

My dogs have always LOVED going to the vet. They get excited and want to fo in quickly. So... Im wondering if owners are projecting their feelings and dog picks up on that.

The vets must do something that removes this extreme fear of pain from these poor animals.

I always enjoyed teasing the dog with mention of the vet. The panic in the car as we pull in to the vet parking lot is kinda satisfying 🤣

      You shouldn't do that.
They didn't ask to be owned by you and certainly don't deserve to be subjected to physiological torment because they behaved instinctively.
In their subconscious, they'll associate you and the vet, its ethos, and what they cause your dog to feel, as something you're a disingenuous participant in.
In essence, they won't trust you in _quite_ the same way they did before.
They won't feel completely secure anymore.
