  • Transcription of Jay Graydon's solo.
The legend behind this solo is classic Graydon. After seven guitarists - including Larry Carlton and Robben Ford - failed to deliver the solo that satisfied fastidious Donald Fagan, Jay, in his laid back SoCal style said he'd give it a try, if that'd be alright. And in one take, nails it!
I was blown away by his unassuming, casual style when I attended his seminar at GIT in '83. He showed up quite late, and on the heels of Grammys for Al Jureau's Breaking Away and Benson's Just Give Me The Night, so we expected a pompous "rockstar" attitude.
He was anything but! He asked us what we wanted to talk about and then dazzled us with examples of where humility and generosity opened doors for him in the industry. Ultimately, the take away for me is be kind in your interactions but fearlessly venerable in your playing.

Nice work man! Just covered it too and man is it trickier than it sounds... Graydon is a true master!
