My wife and I were looking at an Abandoned home there was a raven zz plant sitting in the corner with inches of dust and dirt. It stood a tad over 6ft tall. Now it’s standing in the corner of my living room and shining like a king.
I just got mine for $6 USD! I got him from a local nursery who specializes in rare and uncommon plants, and since mine is a “baby” he was shockingly cheap. I am absolutely TERRIFIED of over watering him and causing root rot, so I am so grateful I found this video!! 😅 I really don’t want to kill my poor sweet son.

'Raven' and 'Jungle Warrior' are separate PBRs, which means they have different characteristics. On the East coast of Australia, Pohlmans released Jungle Warriors. In Perth, Ravens are available. I recently had a Raven sent to me from WA. The differences are subtle. Thanks for the clip!

Hi! I have had my zz for a few years, it's very easy to take care of and has grown a lot. Maybe you've answered this in another video (I just found your channel!) but I would want to ask how you polish your leaves? I also have a ficus that needs leaf polishing, and the zz could use a polish as well. I've seen different polish mixtures you can use for leaves, but was wondering what you use. :) Thank you!
Hi Courtney - thank you for stopping by my channel! i really appreciate it!! i don't polish my leaves with anything as i personally don't like to use leaf shine as they might interfere with the leaf's natural respiratory cycles. Instead I use a damp cloth and wipe the leaves every so often to remove dirt & dust. hope this helps!
I hear conflicting information about whether or not the Zanzibar Gem likes to be root-bound or not. Yes it can tolerate being root-bound- but you are saying that to encourage growth, to pot it up? May I ask where you got this from, or is this in your personal experience? I am yet to determine how much of a role potting up has on the new growth on my plants. Thank you!
Thank you, you always seem so sweet!! Hope things are going well for you "down under"...I'm in Florida, and Happy New Year! I have four raven zz plants, I separated them a year ago from a big one. They are not growing, however. They are in a window that gets morning sun but there are also a lot of trees around so they don't get too much. I let them dry out, etc. but they have literally done nothing for a year! I have a couple of regular ones and they are always growing. Those are under a small plant light bulb. Do you think the black ones need more light? Thank you!!!

I’ve been looking for this for a while now. It’s rare where I am and if i ever find one, they’re ridiculously priced. I finally got one but it’s very small like the very small one in your pot, the short one with thin stem and a few leaves. May I ask if yours eventually grow big and how long it took? Thank you xxo
Hey Lila! So pleased you found one! I found that mine grew really quickly over the summer (2-3 shoots) over 3 months but for the rest of the year it doesn't do much!
Don't buy zz plants from regular nursery they're too expensive. Walmart sells for 5. cheaper HomeDepot a little more expensive than Walmart. But I found zz plants in Vietnamese orchids shop even cheaper for 13. Nursery would sell for 22. I paid for medium zz at Vietnamese place for 13. No tax.
I got mine in bauhaus for 8€ and it was so packed in its pot that i divided it in 3 little plants. I divided it because i like the look of singular stems more than the look of multiple stems, but i downsized 2 or 3 pot sizes since zzs like to be a bit root bound
I just received a raven Zz plant and had a lady tell me that they’re not available in Australia yet!! And that a black jungle warrior and a black/raven isn’t the same thing... I’m confused now, is she wrong?
The Raven and Jungle Warrior are different PBRs (plant breeder rights), which means technically they should have different characteristics, as this is required to register a new PBR. The two black zanzibars were discovered by different people in different countries. I am assuming it is the same mutation that has made this happen. Plants of the same species may have the same name, but have slightly different characteristics depending on their provenance. I have both Jungle Warriors and a Raven (labelled), and am yet to tell the difference between them. I only just got the Raven, so maybe in time I may notice some differences.

It's funny seeing this labeled as rare. This plant is sold in nearly every supermarket and big box store in my region.
Rare part are the black ones though... dark green ones are pretty common.
