I have noticed that there is so much online about how to get rid of gnats, however, I have not seen anything about plant lights. Gnats are also attracted to light; there is a plant light that attracts the gnats, and the light intensity is of such that it burn the gnats up as they fly into it. This light is placed in close proximity to your plants and you will be surprised at the results. The light also helps to promote rapid growth of the plant. Along with good watering control, I find that this works best for me. No use of any kind of chemicals whatsoever.
Thank you Julie!!!! ❤ This had just started happening & I am super clean in my home. I was thinking what the hell is going on. Didn't have the steel wool readily avail but used quadruple layers of cheesecloth & some stones to anchor. Did it all, wrote it down & paused the video to jump up & do it!!!! Can't thank you enough & certain this will do the trick. Girl, you were so on time!!! ❤
@@JulieKhuu I use those sticky tapes too! They totally work! Also, I bought a venus fly trap and they love snacking on the gnats! Carnivorous plants are the best gnat killers!
Thank you for the video, great info here as I had a gnat infestation in my Acrea palm’s soil. I did a weak soap solution w/ Dr.Bronner’s peppermint Castile soap. Ratio is 3/4 TEASPOON soap to 1 cup of warm water (only make what you will use that day). I put it in a spray bottle, shook it up and sprayed it directly on the soil. Some gnats were sitting on the rim of my plant pot so I sprayed them directly and it killed them on contact. Its recommended you spray at night and rinse off any extra solution on the leaves and stems in the am. I sprayed the soil only so if you’re spraying leaves probably best to test and see if it harms your plants before you do an all over application. I read the soap solution could cause sunburn on the leaves if left sitting on leaf surface in the sun (idk tho) so when in doubt test it 🤷🏿♂️. After googling this is a quote on a website explaining why it works “Insecticidal soap, also known as horticultural soap, works to kill soft-bodied insects by disrupting their sensitive cell membrane. Essentially, it coats and penetrates the natural protective barrier around their body, which causes them to desiccate - or dry out.” Said you can do an application every 4 - 7 days. I haven’t seen a gnat all day yet but it’s only been a day. Will report back after a bit with an update. Hope this helps.
Yeeees!! They are the bane of my existence and driving me nuts!! I'm always too afraid to let my basil dry out completely though, but I'm definitely going to try that steel wool and rocks tip! Hopefully that'll also prevent my dog from trying to eat the soil after I fertilize it with fish emulsion too lol

The "gnat trap jar" is the best advice I've ever received! I don't have plants, but I was looking for a way to help with gnats. I live in an apartment and during the summer months, I notice more gnats, but for some reason, I would have a gnat infestation...I would see them in the bathroom, in the kitchen, when I'm watching tv at night (the tv light attracts them), when I I would eat, I always cover my food with a paper towel because the smell attracts and they come buzzin. I figured it could have been the drains, so i use drain cleaner and even garbage disposal cleaner (though i never put food waste in my garbage disposal). I contemplated getting some black outdoor latern since i saw videos that it worked but i didn't know how sanitary it would be for in-house. Last summer, someone came and did a "fog" spray technique in my apartment to get rid of the gnats, but I still saw them bit by bit later though not nearly as bad. This summer it's almost been the same thing, but i increased the number of gnat jars I have from 2 to 4. I placed a jar by my bathroom sink, by my kitchen sink, by window (notice the sunlight attracts them), and by my bananas (i had actually stopped buying bananas because of the gnats)....and THE JAR WORKS. This week alone I've seen so many new dead gnats in the jar (the bodies floating on the surface of mixture). I'm grateful that I don't have to continually be a ninja to kill them all 😀; the jar has helped so much. Thank you so much for sharing.
That’s awesome Zsaquez!! 🙌🏻 thank you for sharing your experience, I’ve used all these methods with different success rates for different types of nuisances
Hi Julie 🙋♀️😊 Thank you for making this video. It may be a year old but is certainly the answer to my plant problems...those gnats!!!! I am getting really annoyed by them and your video taught me many ways to get rid of them. I honestly almost wanted to throw away my plants. I am new in caring for indoor plants. I would really love to enjoy and keep them for as long as i can get rid of those gnats, for good!!! Will follow all you suggested. Big , big thanks!!!💞
I used upholstery/quilt batting instead of the steel wool to cover my dirt. Then I put decorative rocks over the batting to trap the babies (Sorry). Plus, it want rust out like the steel wool and will last for years. Just a thought. Walmart, Amazon, etc.
Knats were my pet peeve last year and after some research, this was a great reactive video for when you already have these plants, but if you happen to start from seed you can take it a step further and sterilize your potting or starter mix by pouring boiling water into the soil and cover for 15 minutes then drain, and that'll kill the eggs. Then follow up with this method if needed.
OMG! So grateful for these awesome tips. I thought I would have to trash a beautiful indoor plant that it was given to me as present.... I am going to bring it back inside. Thank you so much for sharing such valuable information. 🙏🏻😊
Be aware steel wool rusts like crazy and disintegrates in a very short time. Instead I’d try several layers of cheese cloth, nonmetal window screen (the ones that keep out no-seeum bugs), or even coffee filters or heavy duty paper towels. Otherwise, this is a great tip that I’m using... right after I smush this annoying little fly that’s on my screen. No joke.
Ah! I love your suggestions!! Yes I did notice that with the steel wool, but I also found that it helps me to remember to change it out regularly before it disintegrates. The plus side is extra iron for the plants 😂
I know I tried it thinking she had a point but it rusted out plant die from rust or iron so back to the drawing board got to find some one that’s has done it with success.
You have confirmed I’m doing somethings right. I’ve never heard of using vinegar or the steel wool. But, if you say it works, I’ll try it. I like your confidence and upbeat attitude.
Thank you SOOOOO much! My first time with ANY plant pest and this is the first info I've found that addresses how to take care if these bothersome gnats! 😊
This is Amazing to know. I watched 3 videos on pesty nats on plants and your video was very much helpful. I am glad I came across your video. Thank you!!
As a Garden expert at Home Depot i am asked this ALOT! I knew about vinegar and soapy water but steel wool and pebbles?! Genius. I feel like some soils have dormant eggs in them and once watered..... they pop out, everywhere!

eucalyptus and/or peppermint essential oil is great for this. You can add a few drops to the water with soap and Neem essential oil. You can also rub the edges of them flower pot with the peppermint essential oil and it would repel any insect.
Thanks, I definitely needed this info. I didn’t know they were coming from my plants. I love this kind of video. This video is definitely an important o me. Need more like this.
Thanks for stopping by Janice! Gnats are the reason my friends won’t place plants inside their homes, such a travesty. But so easy to address once you know the source!
Thanks a million for the fine steel wool hack. I have a jade plant I transplanted and suddenly I noticed all these fungus gnats in the soil, followed your tip and seems to have worked.
Wow, what a great idea. They just keep coming back idk where they even come from. I see now the corolation between my watering and them showing up. I always knew I watered to much. I have a very successful outdoor veg garden every season. This is my first attempt at an indoor winter herb garden and they're driving me nuts. I can't wait to try this. Ty.
Thank you so much for this video. I have tried everything from sand, small pebbles, and peroxide. They all work with a downside, you have to water from the bottom after applying. I was tempted to try putting a cut up stocking over the dirt before adding the sand then pebbles, but steel wool will be better to use 😄👍.
Curious if the suggestions worked for you? If not try sprinkling diatomaceous dirt on top of all your plants. It works when the bugs eat it, it will kill them because it swells inside and kills them that way. I used this method and it worked the best for me. Hope one of these things works for you. I was able to purchase my diatomaceous dirt from Amazon.
Thanks Julie for the great video. Now that were into colder weather, many still water as though it were summer. This causes gnats very quickly. I had best results using neem oil since there were gnats living in the bottom of my plant too. Neem is organic and safe around family and pets. I like the steel wool idea too!
Don't make the mistake of confusing "organic" or "natural" with SAFE. Lots of deadly toxins come from natural sources. Lots of plants that are great to grow in our homes are not safe to eat. For example, dieffenbachia is called "dumb cane" because tiny chemical bits in the plant will embed in tissues in your mouth and cause swelling, inability to talk, physical damage. It's particularly hazardous for small children and pets. If you keep it out of your mouth it's fine. Also, nearly anything in sufficient concentration can be hazardous, including neem oil. Read instructions before using any substance.
I needed this video more than you ever know!! I have gnats around my plants and they are driving me insane!! I have been setting out water and catching them but the more I kill the more I have. I will be sending hubby shopping today! thanks

This was great as well as great timing. I’m not really good with plants but this one plant has been holding on especially once I put it outside, here in San Diego. It’s starting to get rather chilly and I want to bring the plant inside but thought about bugs. So this video was right on time, thank you! And some of the comments are helpful as well🙌🥰🙏🏾
Thank you so much for this information and such great timing. I've been following Feng Shui methods and so wanted to reintroduce real plants, especially the lucky ones, but been wary of the Gnat problem. I like the idea of steel wool and ornamental pebbles on top of the soil, so it's giving me the courage to welcome some fresh plants to my home. Appreciate you always!
Thank you SO much! I sprayed concentrate lemon juice, worked but next day still lots of new ones. So I used baking powder plus dish soap you suggested. It worked so well, I guess all of them were killed! Yay 🎉 Thanks again! 🌷
OMG..Thank you, thank you, thank you. I was wondering why these pesky tiny flies were around when I didn't even have fruit out. Wrote everything down with your great timeline. Love some of the viewers ideas also, like "sticky sticks". Just have to find them. Thanks again and looking forward to the next video...and out takes were the frosting on the cake. 😀
Funny that I found this because I was at the end of my rope with live plants. I now remember why I stopped having them and it's because of the stupid gnats. I'm going to try your advice. I will definitely use it because I think now more than ever we need to have plants inside of our houses.😌
They love this one plant of mine. I’ve repotted in fresh uncontaminated soil and they’ve come back. I’ve used the gnat killer from the plant store and that helps. Also the rocks is good too but harder for new growth to pop up!
Thank you so much. I am going crazy with all these gnats. I didn't know they hatched so many at one time. I am trying some of these recommendations tomorrow.
Perfect execution. Not missed a thing. This will also work to reduce plant pests like aphids, whiteflies etc. Pests also spend a part of their lifecycle in the soil, so the same measure will work against them. Add to it cleaning leaves with tissue soaked in that peroxide water mixture and that should get rid of pests on leaves.
Thank you for this video. You did an A+ job on it. Direct, to the point, gave exact measurements. Thanks for not talking slow and taking forever, like some video people do. I subscribed. Excellent topic as these little buggers are a problem with indoor plants. Keep the videos coming.
I have around 100 plants (strawberries, tomatoes, lettuce) growing aquaponically in 5 indoor vertical gardens. These gnats keep wiping me out. One second the plants are thriving, next day they're dying. I've had 2 solutions set up which are working but getting them all. Every day I hunt them down & spray them with peroxide. I've also used dish soap spray. Looks like it's time to get some steel wool and seal up all these holes the best I can. Thanks for these tips❤️
@@JulieKhuu yes, I have rust already. Being aquaponics, I ha .5 hours on 2 hours off 24/7👀. I think I've figured out a way to try the sand method. This set up I designed isn't like the others. S keeping sand around around each plant (25 plants per less than 4 sq. Ft.) might not be easy. At any rate, thanks for helping. I believe I'm 1 step closer to being rid of them Edit: Oh, I almost forgot. I'm not knowlrdgable enough to know what effects from 'mild?' rust has on plants / fish. I've heard bad, but I need all the inf I can get. Probably mostly through my own error. Thank you
Those watering globes that you filland stick down into your soil work really well too… They feed water to the roots, and the top of the dirt never gets wet. I don’t use them all year round, but I bring those watering globes out every fall and winter when my house is full of plants. The sand on top of the soil really helps too, so does bottom watering. When you think about it, just try to water your plants however you can without getting that top layer of soil wet, and that will help with your nap problem. And never, never forget to put the dish soap in the vinegar. I have pretty little jars of vinegar sitting around all of my plants all year round. I change it out periodically. It does work amazingly well! You just can’t forget the dish soap.
I've been dealing with this issue for years and they jump from plant to plant. I finally found the solution about a year ago and I've had no gnats since. Buy "seven dust' at the hardware store and sprinkle on the top where they come up to eat. never seen a gnat since! it works.
@@JulieKhuu it's the only thing I have ever found that works and works permanently. just sprinkle the top of the soil till everything's white and leave it. When you water, just water right over the top of the white powder. Never had to do it twice just once and that was over a year ago.
@@MsJccarroll thank u soooo much i was afraid to try it because it said for outdoor use only but im omw to buy some right now these gnats are driving me crazy

Thank you for the great tips! Question: will the steel wool rust over time and will it need to eventually be replaced? (Nvmd I read further down and saw the comment from another viewer about using cheese cloth)
Not sure what I have but they come nipping at my face so often I just bite back like some savage beast....I better find a solution before I start howling at the moon..
I have been using flypaper to ascertain the number of plant flies there are in my front room - it is shocking how many there are. I have now started spraying my plants with the 1litre of water and dishsoap and will be putting up fresh flypaper in the next week or two to see if it has had any effect. If not then I am going to attempt to buy some hydrogen peroxide and then try that. I love the steel wool and pebbles idea and will attempt this as my third resort but only after replanting all my house plants if the first two methods I am going to try do not work. Love the video and thanks for the tips. I also have a tip of gently vacuuming the top layer of the soil of my houseplants. If you have a bagged vacuum cleaner make sure you only do this when your vacuum bag is nearly full so that you can discard the bag in the bin waste as you don't want those little critters sitting around in the bag reproducing!!
@@JulieKhuu After following the tips of the dishsoap spray, I then moved onto the hydrogen peroxide method and it is working. Where is my proof? Flypaper. Only 3 have appeared in the last 2 weeks in the new flypaper so I know the method is working. Thanks for the tips as I was at the point of getting rid of all my house plants but now I will be keeping them. Thank you.
I think Sébastien, my peace lily sent a bad omen on my house. I've had him about 15yrs and he had big leaves and beautiful white lilies.
Awesome tips! My methods are all natural as well, using household products that you probably already have in the kitchen ☺️
What's the link to these lights? I use plant lights and they do not do this. Thank you
i'd love to know the name or model of the light you speak of as well! sounds promising...
What magical light is this….my flowers are at the final stage. This is war.
My bug zapper light!!! I'll just put that near my plants for a day!!! Brilliant thank you!
Oooh great solution! Hoping it works just as well Lori! 🙌🏻🙏🏻
Me too! I'm slamming cabinet doors at midnight looking for baking soda and vinegar 😂
Those “Sticky Sticks” also help. They catch hundreds of them before they leave the pot.
I’ve never used those before but the viewers have spoken 🙌🏻
@@JulieKhuu I use those sticky tapes too! They totally work! Also, I bought a venus fly trap and they love snacking on the gnats! Carnivorous plants are the best gnat killers!
Beginner here, this is by far the most helpful easiest and very educational I’ve seen, thank you ❤️
I’m a beginner too Karina! Just do my research and see what works and doesn’t 👍🏻
I’ve never heard of using steel wool for this. It’s always nice at 2am when you have what you need. Out to my garage I go!
After googling this is a quote on a website explaining why it works
“Insecticidal soap, also known as horticultural soap, works to kill soft-bodied insects by disrupting their sensitive cell membrane. Essentially, it coats and penetrates the natural protective barrier around their body, which causes them to desiccate - or dry out.”
Said you can do an application every 4 - 7 days. I haven’t seen a gnat all day yet but it’s only been a day. Will report back after a bit with an update.
Hope this helps.
Wow, thank you for watching and doing the research. I’ll save this information for the viewers! 🙏🏻☺️
Yes, double whammy win-win! Hope it works out Cheryl 🤞🏻

Thank you Brenda! I used to do those bloopers, but now that I film by myself it’s all serious business! Lol

My parents found a fertilizer with oranges in it and they got rid of gnats.. they also put black sand on top of pots. Perfect 😊😊
It’s that citrus scent I tell ya! Awesome tips, thank you for watching and sharing Michaela 🙏🏻☺️
Hi Julie 🙋♀️😊
Thank you for making this video.
Definitely monitor your watering first Minnie! 👍🏻
Thanks for making this video. My money plant had been gnat free for 2 weeks now!
Woohooo!!! 🙌🏻🤑
This is legit the ONLY thing that has ever worked. Thank you!!!!!
That’s awesome! Thank you for watching Miss! 🙏🏻☺️
I used upholstery/quilt batting instead of the steel wool to cover my dirt. Then I put decorative rocks over the batting to trap the babies (Sorry). Plus, it want rust out like the steel wool and will last for years. Just a thought. Walmart, Amazon, etc.
That’s brilliant Sue!! 👏🏻👍🏻
That’s awesome! I’ll save this tip for new pots, thank you Janelle! 🙌🏻
You can also bake the soil in 90 degree Celsius, for an hour.
Lay the soil in a large pan and cook it for an hour or so at 112F
I have been looking for information like this! Thank you for not just saying how to get rid of- but how to keep them out as well! Thanks!
Hope these work out for you Jennifer!
Finally a video on this subject that I have some confidence in. TY
OMG! So grateful for these awesome tips. I thought I would have to trash a beautiful indoor plant that it was given to me as present.... I am going to bring it back inside. Thank you so much for sharing such valuable information. 🙏🏻😊
Hope these worked out for you love! 💕
I've never heard that steel wool trick! But I like the alternatives you suggest here. Good to know!
I know I tried it thinking she had a point but it rusted out plant die from rust or iron so back to the drawing board got to find some one that’s has done it with success.
I too, considered the effects of the rusting steel wool and immediately ruled that out as an option for me. Thanks for the alternatives suggested ...
I should have read this...So true!!! That rust almost wilted a small sapling I was trying to grow.
My favorite part was the chopstick recommendation! So casual.
You are a God send! I was trying to figure why I had them and now I know what to do. Thank you!!

eucalyptus and/or peppermint essential oil is great for this. You can add a few drops to the water with soap and Neem essential oil. You can also rub the edges of them flower pot with the peppermint essential oil and it would repel any insect.

Ty.
Cut back week by week until you get it down 👍🏻
@@JulieKhuu Oh cool, I love when the author acknowledges comments. Thank you for the advice.
That stocking idea sounds like a cool solution too Qiu! Hope it works out for you! 🙏🏻
Brilliant vid, the gnats have been driving my nuts, keen to try these, thankyou
Getting a handle on your watering comes first 👍🏻🙌🏻
Curious if the suggestions worked for you? If not try sprinkling diatomaceous dirt on top of all your plants. It works when the bugs eat it, it will kill them because it swells inside and kills them that way. I used this method and it worked the best for me. Hope one of these things works for you. I was able to purchase my diatomaceous dirt from Amazon.
Thanks Julie for the great video. Now that were into colder weather, many still water as though it were summer. This causes gnats very quickly. I had best results using neem oil since there were gnats living in the bottom of my plant too. Neem is organic and safe around family and pets. I like the steel wool idea too!
I’ve heard that about neem oil, but have yet to try! Thank you for watching and the tips Vernelle 👍🏻
I will be sending hubby shopping today! thanks
Thank you for watching Becca! You got this 🙌🏻

This was great as well as great timing. I’m not really good with plants but this one plant has been holding on especially once I put it outside, here in San Diego. It’s starting to get rather chilly and I want to bring the plant inside but thought about bugs. So this video was right on time, thank you! And some of the comments are helpful as well🙌🥰🙏🏾
Boil water to water it when you bring it back indoors Tracy. That will kill any new infestations when it was outside.
As far as great weather all year around,San Diego is the place to live, but its just so very expensive to live out there... (New Jersey)
Gnats also breed in miracle gro potting soil.
Sure I love the MG fertilizer.
The soil however is a no.
Oh interesting! I didn’t know that 👍🏻
Yes they do. Thats when the problem started after I repotted 2 plants in miracle gro soil.
I just recently found that out. I will never use it again.
Let me know how it goes Martine! ☺️
Thank you SO much! I sprayed concentrate lemon juice, worked but next day still lots of new ones. So I used baking powder plus dish soap you suggested. It worked so well, I guess all of them were killed! Yay 🎉 Thanks again! 🌷
Awesome!! 🙌 Make sure you allow the plants to dry out before the next watering Ming. Or those little pests might just return

Funny that I found this because I was at the end of my rope with live plants. I now remember why I stopped having them and it's because of the stupid gnats. I'm going to try your advice. I will definitely use it because I think now more than ever we need to have plants inside of our houses.😌
Yes, get your watering down (less of it) and enjoy your living jungalow again T! 🌿
They love this one plant of mine. I’ve repotted in fresh uncontaminated soil and they’ve come back. I’ve used the gnat killer from the plant store and that helps. Also the rocks is good too but harder for new growth to pop up!
So glad you figured out a solution that works Edward 🙌🏻
Thank you so much. I am going crazy with all these gnats. I didn't know they hatched so many at one time. I am trying some of these recommendations tomorrow.
Thank you for watching Pebbles 🙏🏻☺️
Perfect execution. Not missed a thing. This will also work to reduce plant pests like aphids, whiteflies etc. Pests also spend a part of their lifecycle in the soil, so the same measure will work against them. Add to it cleaning leaves with tissue soaked in that peroxide water mixture and that should get rid of pests on leaves.
Awesome tip for the leaves! I’ll try that! Thank you for watching Lucky! 🙏🏻☺️
Now I know where these darn knats are coming from thanks a bunch now I have tools to combat this knat problem.🦋

Remember to change out the steel wool at the first signs of rust Andy! Those little packages last a loooong time. Good luck!
I believe I'm 1 step closer to being rid of them
Edit: Oh, I almost forgot. I'm not knowlrdgable enough to know what effects from 'mild?' rust has on plants / fish. I've heard bad, but I need all the inf I can get. Probably mostly through my own error. Thank you

Excellent! Fantastic video for this time of year when those pesky knats seem to hang around!
They’re here year round Robert! Now you can get rid of them for good 🙌🏻
Im a soil scientist and I did a video on this but it’s a soil issue and your best bet is actually using predatory nematodes.
You’re awesome, thank you for watching and the feedback 🙏🏻☺️
I can't wait to try all of this. The steel wool surprised me. I'd have never thought of that. Thank you!
It does rust, so replace it at the first signs Renee 👍🏻
Watering from below, that’s brilliant and makes total sense 👍🏻 Thank you for watching and the tips Ava! 🙏🏻
I’ve never heard of the steel wool approach. I like it. Does it rust?
good question
Yes, it does rust. The idea is that you get a handle on the gnats and replace the steel wool until they’re gone.
Water from the bottom if possible. It’ll prob help avoid that
Thank you...thank you! I've always wanted real plants in my home, but I was always hesitant because of the gnats.

it's the only thing I have ever found that works and works permanently. just sprinkle the top of the soil till everything's white and leave it. When you water, just water right over the top of the white powder. Never had to do it twice just once and that was over a year ago.

This is all great information. I'm really intrigued by the steel wool idea instead of sand or diatomaceous earth.
All great solutions, I’m sure it’s conditional based on the amount of nuisance you have 😬
Thank you for the great tips! Question: will the steel wool rust over time and will it need to eventually be replaced? (Nvmd I read further down and saw the comment from another viewer about using cheese cloth)
Yes it will rust if left too long. The idea is to keep it there until the gnats die out. Shouldn’t take longer than 7-10 days
Started to rust ASAP. 😥
Especially if combined with H2O2 as it is a strong oxidizer .. but overall I think the tips are great and can't wait to try.

I love that vacuum idea! Will try it out, thank you for watching and the tip 🙌🏻

Well , for 3 yrs, Sébastien leaves started getting smaller and he stop giving me lilies. With a painful saddened heart, I laid Sébastien to his grave and replaced him with a new one. 💔 We, a week later, my house was infested with gnats. I don't see gnats near my plants right now, but upon researching, it had to come from the 🪴 I brought to replace Sébastien. (Peace lily are dramatic, just like me 😂). Anyways, today was the day.. I came across your video and I've sprayed the peroxide solution and did the Mason jar and plastic method. It seems to be working. This video was the best one so far.. Imma start spraying the lemon and water in the air cause to eliminate them. Either that, or imma start charging these critters for lodging 😂. Thanks for this video. I thought I'd make you and whoever reading this chuckle, cause having this problem isn't at all funny.
