This movie made me become friends with Cherami Leigh. This movie cured my depression. This movie stood with me during my childhood. This movie must be released in IMAX once again.

Just attended a recent concert where the CSO preformed this piece (and several other pieces from Fantasia and Fantasia 2000) live. They are still amazing it was such a privilege to see this piece preformed live along with the accompanying animation.
I also attended with my mother. I was always so infatuated with this ever since I was born. My sister (one year older than I) always asked to watch The Wizard of Oz and I would always ask to watch this. Seeing this live after not seeing either Fantasia in nearly 20 years was such a moving experience.
I loved how this segment set the "Modernist" tone for Fantasia 2000 - clearly influenced by the prevailing aesthetic of its time (after all, the first ever iteration of Apple's iPod was just around the corner) - with all abstract shapes to contrast starkly with the "Traditional" animation aesthetic of the original Fantasia - both are beautiful in very distinct ways ❤
I know Doug Walker said he wasn't a fan of that segment because of the story clashing with the lack of lines and abstract artwork, but I think that's what makes this work so well. It's like the majority of Wall-E.
From what the animation is showing with the music, I think it's telling the prophecy of Armageddon. The butterflies represent the good and the church, while the bats represent all the sin and evil in this world. And the light from the clouds is God himself, waking the good to enter Heaven. Letting his holy light destroy Lucifer's army, once and for all.
I watched it again and I have more wisdom. It's not just Armageddon, it's also about the Second Coming of Christ. The animation starts with the Rapture, with God waking the saints and preparing them for the battle to come. The last good days pass away and soon, those against God arise under the command of Lucifer/Satan. The animation illustrates that they seem to outnumber us as more and more of the corrupt join the evil forces. Some of the saints die in battle and seem to be lost for good (the orange butterfly), but most of the saints are prepared and go by God's word. the little pink butterfly gets lost in the confusion and faces many challenges to try and return to the ones they trust. When the animation transitions to the sphere of butterflies in the cosmos, they are protecting each other and defending themselves as a whole with the enormous army of bats surrounding them. But the saints fight will all they got. Now God appears before all and those who died are revived (The Resurrection), and all evil dies and sulks in God's light (Judgement Day). Now all who followed the Lord rise into Heaven and live with God as the animation ends (The Millenium).
