  • Wing Chun the way it was taught in the late 19th Century.
Yip Kin Wing Chun is now headed by Yip Kin's grandson and current Grandmaster, Sifu Yip Fook Choy, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Chi Sao is usually the fifth form taught to the student and requires 2 participants. Most techniques used in the art is included. The movements are back-and-forth, simulating actual combat and provides training to feel an opponents energy and how to respond or attack based on the input or feedback.
Video is from a stage demo at the Chinwoo stadium, Kuala Lumpur.

Hi, I understand your confusion, you must be a student of a HK WC style. In Yip Kin WC, it is a form that includes almost all of the range of movements taught in the other forms. If you notice, unlike HK WC, where chi sau starts with both students applying forward energy from start to finish, YK WC applies these in backward and forward movements to make it as close as possible to an actual combat situation.

Hi, WCIceJack, great questions! (1) I can't comment on the distance of the 2 practitioners in the video, but when I train, the distances are close enough that you can get hit easily without the other person having to step forward. (2) In Chi Sao, the aim should be to stick, only when necessary, and not at all times.

Remember that the primary aim is always to HIT to the centreline. Chi Sao happens when your attack is blocked or when countering the opponents attack, and should not be static. the aim of Chi Sao is either to create openings to hit and/or attack the opponent's structure, then hit. To only concentrate on sticking hands risks making the mistake of "chasing hands". In my humble opinion, of course.

Is this the same as tang yik weng chun?

I'm not sure, I haven't seen that style before. If it's from the mainland rather than from Hong Kong, there should be a lot of similarities.

Hi, i really like the chi sao form. A couple of question: (1) i find the distance between the two person is too great. Do you normally train that way? (2) As the name chi sao suggest, isn't it the aim to be sticky to the other person at all times? Thanks.

There are 4. Chi Sao, Yong Mui Pang (see my other video), Luk tim Poon Guan and Butterfly Sword and Shield vs. Trident. These cover short, medium, long ranges and one short vs. medium range. In case you're wondering, yes, we have a lot of weapons!

When applying these movements, you get a feel of an enemy's energy as he attacks and you get a feel of how to counter with energy, or redirect his energy elsewhere if necessary. If your structure isn't correct, or you have no energy, or if your energy is not directed to the centreline, you will know, because you will be moved around, or find yourself unable to stop an attack, or maybe totally helpless. As with any other WC, you have to feel it to understand what I'm saying. Thanks for watching!

You're right about not Yip Man. This is Yip Kin lineage. Similar to other mainland China forms.

Thanks Zaf Abbas for your replies. I agree with what you said. How many 2 man forms are there in Yip Kin Wing Chun? I have not seen any in other Wing Chun lineages.

Ah sorry, that should read: (1) Chi Sao (2) Yong Mui Pang (3) Luk Tim Poon Guan (4) Single Butterfly Sword and Shield vs. Trident. Was posting in a hurry. BTW, I do remember seeing a photo of a HK WC lineage which had a double Butterfly Sword vs. Luk Tim Poon Guan form some time ago, but I can't remember which lineage it was.
