Can't believe 3 fourths of them are gone. One thing I always loved about The Mamas & The Papas is how incredibly melodic and harmonious they sounded together. The only other band I can think of who sounds as harmonious and melodic as them is Queen. Rest peacefully John, Cass, and Denny.
Is anyone else hypnotized by the bass line in this song?? Joe Osborn is AMAZING on the bass guitar!! His work with The Wrecking Crew (all members listed here) is legendary. They performed on more than 50 number one hits from the 1960s alone. Joe used one guitar (Fender Jazz Bass) and one set of strings (LaBella flatwounds) that he didn't change for 20 years!! That tone is very unique, and now I know the origin...
Wow!Exelente montaje!!me gusta como realizaste el comienzo y el final del video, muy buena la presentacion. Apart from their excellent harmonies, the thing I'm taking away from listening to the Mamas & Papas is that I'm gonna wear more hats like John Phillips.
@ejectorerector I will try to answer to your question, but first, let me quote that entire verse: "That kind of girl won't try to please / That kind of girl would never get on her knees / That kind of girl's the kind that thinks just of herself / Your on your first and she's on her twelfth" Considering what was going on within the band at the time, I must assume that John is writing about his wife Michelle, and this song is his advice to her next lover. (continued====>)
@TurqouiseTapioca ... it is definately one helluva tune ...... listened to these guyirls (new coin?) many a time ..... never tire of hearing these gems .... that's the true show of talent! .... wish great things would never end ... sounds selfish and childish, but, i know most people feel the same. at least we have the technology to record our favorites, so it could be worse!
I saw the Mamas and Papas live in concert in Baltimore in Nov. 66. They did not perform this song, although it might be one of their best rock songs. On this, Jill Gibson sang female vocals. This is a period when Michelle was fired.
@ejectorerector There's so many different angles, it's hard to tell which one is right. I guess we may never know John's true intentions for writing that line, unless someone else helped him write this song, and they're still with us. Michelle??
@ejectorerector (continued===>) I just realized that there's a third answer to your question: Michelle wrote the line, "Well I got down on my knees and I pretend to pray" for California Dreamin. Perhaps John is saying that kind of girl will never get down on her knees to pray to God. Going deeper, is he directly addressing (shouting out at) Michelle for writing that line in California Dreamin??
@swervn69 thanks for the responses. i thought the sexual meaning, but i wasn't sure if that's what he really meant or i was just dirty minded. i wouldn't have thought the california dreamin interpretation though.
@ejectorerector (continued==>) To answer your question, I'll use a Mae West double-entendre: that verse could mean that she never gets down on her knees to beg for mercy or forgiveness, or else she never gets down on her knees to please her man sexually - she doesn't need to; she can get any man she wants. John certainly underestimated Michelle in his lyrics: when you open her mind, there's plenty inside!! She's very clever, centered, loyal, logical, constant, & the ultimate survivor....

WOW, what an underrated tune!! The Mama's and the Papa's had one major funky side :P
Most beautiful rok n roll woman of all times.
Michele Phillips.
No one came close in 40 years.
I love read comments from people who lived in those times......as I would have liked to live in those days: 3
Never get tired of listening to them: lots of memories!

Excellent song. Excellent pics too.
Nice presentation, bro! I also met Hal Blaine, the world famous session drummer who played on all the Mamas records. Groovy!

Once Was a Time I Thought
The Mamas & the Papas
Once was a time I thought that love could be sold or bought
And everything fell in place for me.
The fashion of passion I rationed with caution
Because of the notion the potion of passion
Had never been passed to me.
But since it was Sunday and sunny I went for a stroll.
But peanuts and pigeons and people put me in a hole.
A blessing refreshing in you did unfold,
Dispelling depressing distressing thoughts from my soul.
Once was a time I thought that love could be sold or bought
And everything fell in place for me.
The fashion of passion I rationed with caution
Because of the notion the potion of passion
Had never been passed to me.
But now that you're by my side,
I find that I feel so satisfied,
Somebody must have lied to me.

Try saying that fast.
If you have heard the outtake from that session...Michelle tried to and
Michelle recorded this bfore she was booted.
Wrong Michelle is not featured on this track, it is Jill Gibson and Cass and the sound is so obvious.

It sounds a bit odd, like someone remastered it with louder, tinny sounding drums.
