If I had no oven and no microwave, I would cook brownies thusly: start a fire in the backyard (3-4 small logs) and allow to burn to coals while I mixed a double batch of brownie mix, pour into my (greased and floured) small cast iron dutch oven. Nestle the oven into the coals and using long bbq tongs add a few coals to the top of the cast iron lid. Bake for 20 mins in the coals, then remove the dutch oven and allow to sit for another 10 on a heatproof surface before lifting the lid to check on my delicious fudgie brownies.
You must not have ever lived in a dorm. Part of the fun is discovering stupid ways to get around the rules. We used to keep our dorm room freezing, which others in the hall complained about because we were right across from the shower and wet people seem to not like cold, and we would put our refrigerated items on the vent. One group of boys in the next hall used a hot plate and covered the smoke detector with a bowl that started to condensate and set off the alarm. We had to stand outside waiting on the fire department to figure out what happened for three hours. Good times. I saw that hair straightener hack and thought to myself, "Yup. I'd have tried that."

Once I bought three value packs of oreos that had like 30 cookies each, thinking it would last like for a month, but it didn't survive the week. My husband and my seven year old ate all of them, I literally ate like three or four cookies.
For the best oreo mug cake: 4 Oreos some milk 1 tbsp of self-raising flour Mix really well till it becomes a mooshi mixture. then put in the microwave for 1 minute. Top with oreo ice cream and oreo pieces You can make the same thing with normal cookies.
The scrambled egg in an orange shell trick is an old camping hack for when you don't have a pot or pan.You buy a bag of oranges and a couple dozen eggs because they both don't need refrigerating and that makes them perfect for extended camping trips. You place the orange on the coals of the campfire after the fire has gone out in the morning and it makes a scrambled egg for breakfast.THIS WORKS. My brothers and I have done this many times. The egg is not supposed to taste like anything other than just scrambled eggs. The orange shell is just a substitute for a pot and adds nothing to the taste. You should have already eaten the insides and drank the juice first for breakfast and then use the orange shell as a pot. So that hack actually worked and I think your husband just overreacted because you probably told him it should have been some kind of dessert so he wasn't expecting just scrambled eggs. That fail is on you so SHAME on you.

For some unknown reason, your debunking videos started showing up on my feed a few days ago, Ann. At first, I scrolled past them, but now I'm bingwatching them. They are at the same time helpful and hilarious. Thanks, Ann!
the brownie straightener sounds like a "i live in a college dorm that didn't even let me have a microwave" type of trick. Like making hot dogs in a coffee pot or something. and tbh the college students i know are the type of people who'd make tiny brownies on a hair straightener.
I was totally thinking that too. I remember colleges were SUPER strict about what appliances you could and couldn't have in dorms. I think if you added some foil around the straightener you might be able to trap some more heat and make it a little more efficient.
@@yusurkassem4174 In some places you probably could. But toasters, toaster ovens, and especially hot plates were a hard no bc they were deemed fire hazards. (I went to college before induction cooktops were a portable thing, back then only rich people had induction stove tops built into their kitchen counters lol)
I used to use vodka for the watermelon trick. Found the alcohol didn’t distribute evenly throughout the melon. Puréing the watermelon and then adding the watermelon got better results but was more time consuming
I have several "friends" on facebook constantly sharing these videos. Even a single thought can debunk them. An orange is bitter... Egg+milk is basically a plain scrambled eggs... How the hell do you expect anything good coming out of it? :D

@@rebeccahetrick6576 That's because Oreos are tiny. In Australia we get properly sized biscuits - mind you they're still smaller than they were 30 years ago.
I remember this anecdote in an old Reader's Digest: a woman was teaching her daughter to make a roast according to her grandmother's recipe. The recipe as she was taught by her mother was to cut off the ends, salt and pepper, and then bake for an hour and a half. Her daughter asked her why she cut the end off the roast, and her mother did not have the answer, so they called the grandmother. When asked, the grandmother said, "I cut off the ends to fit in my roasting pan."
I'm thinking there's an issue of precedent - basically, if nobody has done this particular kind of lawsuit before, there's no precedent, so nobody would know how the best way to go about doing it. I mean, sue a family of Russian RUclips channels for life hacks that don't work? I hate them as much as anyone else, but I don't imagine any sort of lawsuit would actually bring about anything. But at the very least I hope the DANGEROUS hacks could, you know, stop.
There’s at least gotta be a RUclips TOS violation. Like with the one where they wanted you to use a whisk with caramel that was hotter than boiling water. There might be a rule against promoting dangerous activities or something like that.
I’d use my pressure cooker to bake like I’ve done a couple of times already. Pressure cooker baking is so easy, effortless and great! It is underrated.
@@Black_Samurai-fish - You CAN catch COVID-19 online when you attend to false "information". Like my nephew's young wife did. She died two years ago yesterday.
Brownie with no oven: when i was in Tanzania, a lady showed me how she baked using a fire. She let the flames die down and almost buried the cake (in a closed container) in the ashes. It made a lovely cake - so clever. I've always wanted to give it a go (without setting my house on fire).
we do something similar at campfire, but we cook potatoes or "peasants pouches" (cut potatoes, paprika, sausage etc in aluminium foil) cooking in the ashes is a good way to cook
A better way to make a mug cake with Oreos. We did this in my culinary class Put 5 or 4 Oreos in a mug. Put in 1/4 cup of milk. Wait for 1 minute and mash the Oreos and milk into a sludge. Add 1 Tbsp of flour, 1 Tbsp of sugar, 1 Tsp of Baking powder and 1 Tsp of coco powder. Mix til smooth and microwave for one minute. Wait until it cools down then add whipped cream. Enjoy!
I have 2 comments: 1 With no oven or microwave, a solar oven is easy to make out of a shoe box and foil. Instructions are easy to find online. 2 Anne, I'd love to see you adapt that "orange custard" recipe so that it actually works
My solution to the no-oven, no-microwave brownies would be some kind of no-bake brownie/cookie recipe. Basically oats and a chocolate mixture combined and refrigerated. It's not the same as brownies, but it tastes pretty good and it'd do the job of fulfilling the chocolate craving. :)
You know, this gave me a terrifying realization. A majority of the audience of these videos is comprised of children and teens, who are actually gullible enough to follow these things. And leaving a hair straightener on for several minutes with a piece of foil placed on it, or shoving random containers into the oven or microwave...these are MAJOR fire hazards. Not to mention that shoving random ingredients into something and cooking it for an inadequate period of time could leave the results practically raw and that could give someone food poisoning. And cooking things in random receptacles could result in toxic chemicals from the container leaching into the food- it's why you shouldn't microwave food in plastic containers. These could legitimately hurt or kill someone or cause serious property damage, and I'm pretty sure I read a new article about a child who DIED after copying something from a channel like this because whatever they did caused an explosion. These are a serious danger and RUclips really needs to do something about this.
Oh, haven't you seen the one where you pour molten caramel on a spinning mixer beater, which the video says makes spun sugar, but actually flings caramel hot enough to melt Saran wrap (which can withstand boiling water btw) in all directions at high speed?
@@dbseamz Christ on a bike, that's awful! Honestly these channels are a serious danger. I watch LOADS of commentary channels, and I mean loads, and nobody touched on that even ONCE.
www.bbc.com/news/49765176 It wasn't a life hack channel but some random influencer, but yes, there was an incident where a teenaged girl died after attempting a life hack copied from a video(cooking popcorn in a can, the can exploded). Doesn't make it any better that it wasn't a lifehack channel, though.

the brownie straightener sounds like a "i live in a college dorm that didn't even let me have a microwave" type of trick.
I make cheese toasties with an iron 😂

@@yusurkassem4174 In some places you probably could. But toasters, toaster ovens, and especially hot plates were a hard no bc they were deemed fire hazards.

How has the never been ANY class action lawsuits against channels like So Yummy and 5-minute-crafts?
Hard to sue a Russian company when you're not Russian.
There should be
I'm thinking there's an issue of precedent - basically, if nobody has done this particular kind of lawsuit before, there's no precedent, so nobody would know how the best way to go about doing it.
I think because one of the channels have made it clear that the tricks they do are for entertainment purposes only, and not to be replicated

Brownie with no oven: when i was in Tanzania, a lady showed me how she baked using a fire. She let the flames die down and almost buried the cake (in a closed container) in the ashes. It made a lovely cake - so clever. I've always wanted to give it a go (without setting my house on fire).
We do it lyk that back here(Tanzania). Or use charcoal stove
we do something similar at campfire, but we cook potatoes or "peasants pouches" (cut potatoes, paprika, sausage etc in aluminium foil)
cooking in the ashes is a good way to cook
I've seen that done with cornbread, the batter in a cast iron skillet covered with a bit of foil or a lid and the burried in the campfire.
As a Girl Scout leader we cook just about anything in a campfire. We also know how to make a cardboard oven 😉
Yeahhh i have seen those in other places, looks nice
A better way to make a mug cake with Oreos. We did this in my culinary class
Put 5 or 4 Oreos in a mug.
Enjoy!

The hair straightener one is just like a more dangerous easy bake oven
more dangerous and less efficient
Anyone else wonder if it was a totally gross idea to use a HAIR TOOL for baking FOOD???
My solution to the no-oven, no-microwave brownies would be some kind of no-bake brownie/cookie recipe. Basically oats and a chocolate mixture combined and refrigerated. It's not the same as brownies, but it tastes pretty good and it'd do the job of fulfilling the chocolate craving. :)
A brick goes flying through my neighbor's window. Attached to the brick is a note that reads, "Hair straightener broken. Send brownies please."
Underrated comment lmao
Your in luck I’m a brownie
It's kind of irritating how most commentary channels were focused more on how stupid Troom Troom's prank videos were rather than on how dangerous a lot of these "life hacks", especially the cooking and beauty-related ones, can be, back when these sorts of channels were a hot topic in that community.
The look of betrayal when he bites into the orange flavored eggs was hilarious.
How I would make a brownie without an oven:
1a. Locate a shared kitchen (like a university or co-op). Make brownies in the oven. Eat them.
1b. Identify a family member with an oven and visit them. Offer them a brownie or two in exchange for use of the oven. Make brownies in the oven. Share and eat them.
1c. Make friends with someone with an oven. See 1b.
"Pour brownie mix into paper bag, sprinkle in nuts, microwave for 10 minutes... Leave on neighbor's doorstep for a fun prank."
