    This is a lovely, virtuosic concerto. I also like having the autograph score scrolling. Many thanks.

    I do not consider this concerto dull at all. And if it is for someone we have the experience to hear what is full...but Vivaldi is not. Vivaldi has a great problem that is his hallmark the beauty of his music is in all his music even the dull one's. Viva Vivaldi. What would be history without him.

    To quote Michael Talbot (in his biography of the composer): “Vivaldi did not lack a somewhat rough sense of humour. One remembers the inscription ‘Per li Coglioni’ in the finale of the autograph score of the concerto RV 340 dedicated to Pisendel, where Vivaldi had included, no doubt for a copyist’s benefit, some bass figures which could be interpreted as a slight on Pisendel’s musicality.”
    Vivaldi’s annotation does not translate well. Literally, it means ‘for the idiots’. Although if one considers his choice of vocabulary, the more appropriate translation would probably be “for jerkoffs”, or something to that effect.
    Perhaps Julien Chauvin and his band took Vivaldi’s comment a little too personally, because for whatever reason they declined to play the passage in question as written. Monsieur Chauvin changed the original string-crossings that Vivaldi wrote for other figurations. But the progression is also changed, and of course (!) the bass. Here the score cannot be matched to the music until the cadence before the next tutti. Musically, it is not the same passage.
    Once I realized this it was too late to go back. But it is frustrating. Especially since this work is practically never played. And in such a famous passage in the literature? Surely we could have endured the sequence even if it is a bit dull!
    But it is a very good recording otherwise. It includes Vivaldi’s own notated cadenza at the end. The manuscript is perhaps, like RV 314, a copy that the composer made in haste to present his friend. It is in Dresden and bears a few embellishments by Pisendel, notated directly on Vivaldi’s score.

      "Cogli0ne" in Italian actually would translate as something like "c0ck" in English.

      I am rather partial to Zelenka's "Hipocondrie à 7 concertanti" myself... I still don't know what it means, no matter how hard I try to understand

    correct, for dull people, actually the vulgar term would define that anatomic part referred to as "balls". And to this very day, the Italian "to break one's balls" means "to annoy". Just to clarify Vivaldi's likely intent.

      It probably means for the idiots who don’t have the motor coordination to master this passage on violin or perhaps someone called Vivaldi’s music poor and he wanted to prove them wrong!

    Il nome di questo concerto è uno scherzo?

    • @DelVivaldi
      @DelVivaldi  2 года назад +6

      Non è il nome ma solo un'annotazione di mano di Vivaldi, che era uno scherzo destinato a Pisendel.
