RV 578a is a recent addition to Vivaldi’s catalogue of works. The manuscript has always been in the Dresden collection with the correct attribution, but as the catalogue was originally conceived, a work assigned an RV number would only get an ‘a’ variant if the alternative source contained one or more movements that differed completely from the main source. Since the four movements of RV 578a (the Dresden source) all have their equivalent in the printed version of Opus 3 (RV 578), no distinction was made between the two sources for cataloguing purposes, and the manuscript never got any attention. It was moreover badly damaged in WWII and so conveniently ignored. However, the Dresden version contains very significant textual differences from its published counterpart. I will not attempt to describe them all. The suspended cadence at the end of movement 1 and the tierce de Picardie to end the work are evidence enough that the manuscript preserves the composition in an earlier state. F.M. Sardelli holds that it originated before 1703. I will note that some harmonies in the third movement, combined with the dotted rhythms, for example at 5:20 onwards, seem to me almost unbelievably French, much closer to the real thing than Vivaldi’s feigned ‘stile francese’ of later fame. No doubt Maestro Sardelli was aware of it and directed his players accordingly, reinforcing that impression. In the fourth movement, the ritornello is completely different: it is in fact a gigue, if I’m not mistaken. At least two such dance movements were excised from the works of Opus 4, though Bach knew and transcribed them in their earlier forms. In RV 578 it is striking to hear how the changes made in the published version altered the character of the movements. The later, better known version seems in fact like a rationalization, tighter, less excursive, more monochromatic and harmonically more conventional - as seen from the future; it was progress before it became convention. Such was the influence of L’estro armonico, perhaps.
Thank you so much Del Vivaldi RUclips channel. What you doing for the musical world of Vivaldi it's truly something else this video it's one of the kind that many other Vivaldi fan would touch deeply, as violinist the chance to get this kind of manuscripts information it's very difficult or imposible for many reasons. And you are doing a true democratization of the knowledge, the true spirit of the humanistic philosophy thanks for this amazing gift!! Greetings from Rio de Janeiro 🙏🏼
Both the upload itself and your comprehensive commentary on the 'a' variant are amazing. Your channel is a veritable treasure trove! Thank you so much!!
@@DelVivaldi It is the same with Jan Dismas Zelenka's music also.. sadly..I have gone through nearly a hundred manuscripts of his works, and transcribing several into urtext editions scores, as he has been so unfairly neglected as a titan on par la Bach - and interestingly enough it is also water damage, from WWII - being contained "safely" in treasure chests in a certain Japanese Palace near the River Elbe of Germany... which of course would flood, and seep into the basement, damaging the manuscripts (as well as other historical documents).
I do think the later version is the more polished composition, everything is balanced well and the harmonic progressions are perfect. But the earlier one does have its charm, it feels like an earlier work, before Vivaldi streamlined and tightened it up. The 3rd mov is thd kost intetesting. It is indeed much more fremch in its earlier version, but it still lacks the lyrical beauty of the later version. And the 4th mov. Is just a fantastuc energised bop in its later version.

I am very impressed by the score. the interpretation is also amazing! soooo beautiful. Thanks for sharing this treasure.
I gotta say the final published version of RV 578 sounds more polished especially the first movement IMHO ofc!

Quelle merveilleuse musique pour commencer la journée !
Very interesting. The earlier version has several flavorful idiosyncrasies, even if it is less polished.
It's almost a miracle! Thank you.
Grazie, grazie davvero!

Quite an original interpretation
It was wonderful and inspiring. Thank you for sharing!
Thank you. This is sublime.
It hurts to see the damaged manuscript...
Me too
Many of them are in better shape but some are worse, completely illegible. It is a very large collection. Water was the cause, in most cases.
@@DelVivaldiYes, it saddens me... Just how many masterpieces have been lost!

Bravo!
A BOP like the ii allegro could lowkey murder tf outta me
Is it me or the Allegro movement is identical to Purcell's "The Cold Song"?
Vivas à harmonia, e segue o movimento, o ligeiro. As linhas sonoras em diálogo complementam-se, repetem-se.
Genius
Interesting version, a bit different from the regular recordings....
