this car has over 400lb/ft of torque, can hit 60mph in ~6.5 seconds while weighing in at 4500lbs, can achieve nearly 30mpg combined, and your whining that it has 240HP... sounds to me like you're the one who's nuts.
I'm currently driving the Lexus LS 600h L (priced at $125,000) and I'm getting about 20mpg, so in that regard the A8 TDI will save the average driver $900/year in fuel alone not to mention the $25,000 premium up front - not an insignificant amount. I hear what you're saying about Audi's reputation for reliability and unfortunately I can't accurately say after driving it for a week other than I had no problems in that short timeframe. Sorry you're having issues with your Q7.
My 1996 A6 2.5TDI 6 speed manual does 39.2 mpg highway at 74mph and if I maintain 50 mph it will go up to 52.2 mpg. And the engine in it I5 2.5TDI was introduced in the early 90's So much for the 20 years of improvement in technology...
not everyone will care about saving money but anyone will appreciate not having to stop to fuel up as often, and the fact that the TDI can go 20-30% further on a tank than it's gas-powered brethren is what makes it attractive.
if you own the vehicle for the long term, you also need to factor in the replacement cost of the battery and related parts, which is likely to exceed the cost of any replacement turbo in the diesel. Thus tipping favour to the diesel even further. This combined with fuel savings is likely why hybrids do really poorly in terms of sales in much of Europe compared to diesels across a wide vehicle price range
Where I live (Northwestern Ontario Canada) diesel fuel is about 7 cents/litre cheaper, so in some cases this could save you even more depending on where you live.
Steve, Are you going to be reviewing the other TDI models that are out now the A6/A7/Q5? Specifically interested to watch a review and hear your opinions of the Q5 TDI which is now Audi's best selling vehicle. TIA
In europe the TDI is by far the most sold version of the A8, the CDI is the most sold version of the S class anda the 740d the most popular of the 7 series BMW. In europe those cars are even more expensive then in usa, reaching easily 130.000$
The 2011 XJ had huge issues, and we had to fully replace it with a 2012. The entire car rattled, and the glass roof sounded like it was about to shatter when going over bumps! Sadly, Canada doesn't really have "lemon laws" for cars per se, and we ended up having to pay $12k to get the 2012. It had 20k kms on it. The Q7 has had too many issues to list, but all are related to the engine and supercharger. Every time the check engine light comes on, it sits there for 1-2 weeks! Next car: Lexus!
every comparison test ive watched the audis moped the floor with lexus. my first car was a is250 awd. then i got a 2010 audi a4 it made the lexus like like a joke. i love where Lexus is going now with being more sporty but they still aren't there yet. the Germans know everyone out to beat them and copy them so they are stepping up the game.
Thanks, Steve. Yeah, it's quite unfortunate, and after looking at Reliability reports, it appears the two European cars in our house are the worst. The Q7, and a 2012 Jaguar XJ, which we actually had to replace under lemon law (we had a 2011 that spent more time at the dealer than in the driveway!). I know anecdotal evidence doesn't count for much, but our GS450h and Infiniti m35 hybrids have had no issues whatsoever. As for the LS600, please note that it is built for power more than efficiency!
This car is awesome!! $100k for all this stuff and a motor that should outlast the aluminum parts is a no brainer if you can afford the admission! I love VW/Audi diesels!!!?
yes, if you like driving wood logg. yes i love lexus LS when my hand is numb and to piss to enjoy driving. turning is like aircraft....carrier. Yes it is good if you just drive the LS. but if you compare to audi a8? It a lot more like having the bed room just the way you want instead of just the way they give it to you.
how come you still paid $12k for another newer, but used, audi? i would have just taken the money back and buy a well optioned Lexus GX or RX350. maybe a used LX570.
I don't think there is any basis in fact for that statement. Everyone I know who has earned the money to buy a 100k dollar car is very interested in saving money when it's smart.
Isn't there a bridge you should be under somewhere? How many hundreds of thousands of miles have you put on VW diesels to make such a statement? I put 300,000 on my jetta with no major issues, gave it to my friend who still drives it everyday when I bought my Passat TDi.
whats wrong with it? electrical glitches? my parents have only owned one german car, mercedes benz, for 3 years. it always started and drove us to where ever we needed. but there were just stupid problems that showed up. like there was squeaky suspension due to a dry bolt. i mean things that dont ever happen to Japanese cars. my parents have a older Lexus as a spare car, not a problem at all with 160k and it being over 12 years old...
I don't understand, if you like A8L TDI so much, why didn't you buy one? You keep telling me how it is superior and more efficient that petrol, you should just buy one, otherwise don't waste your time typing this.
Get a Porsche Cayenne, which statistically is much more reliable than Audi Q7. Porsche ranked number 3 in overall dependability, and Rolls Royce ranked #1, whereas Lexus is #2. I guess if it's reliability that's you are looking for, Rolls Royce isn't a bad choice :D
Those German luxury sedans are typically bought by business corporations and offered to their executives as business/personal vehicles. Audi A8L W12 is the most popular choice of business vehicles around the world, the distant second is probably Mercedes S600. Sure it's overrated, but you are not paying for it, so who cares
Rolls Royce doesn't compete in this class, so Lexus is the #1 most reliable mainstream car brand. Toyota is #2, and Porsche is #3. I wish I could afford a Rolls Royce, but I can't justify spending that much on a car when i could invest the money instead. The cars in my house now are already too large of an investment in a depreciable asset for my liking.
Now Don't get me wrong I like audi but this car is way over priced cuz of all the small trinkets and this car also too slow for that money it should be around at least the low 300hp range & 5.sec 0-60 but i can say it looks nice tho.
i agree, i was supprised to hear that it only gives out a total of 240 hp. Thats pretty bad considering the fact that i drive a 2001 infiniti i30, which has a 3 liter v6 (not turbo-charged obviously) and it gives out a total of 228 hp. That means that this new audi, which is turbo charged, only gives out 12 more horsepower than my 13 year old infiniti, and it cost almost 3 timesas much, when you add the fancy gadgets.
electric issues bound, reliability and build issues... no ty audi I rather go with a LEXUS! german brand is overrated and many people lease and don't own Mercs, Audi's or BMW, because it's like throwing money in the trash.. lol well that's just my opinion
You were so lucky to get to review this diamond !! Amazing review like always. Thanks.
I love it when I search for a certain car and then I see that there is a Steve Hammes review of it.
this car has over 400lb/ft of torque, can hit 60mph in ~6.5 seconds while weighing in at 4500lbs, can achieve nearly 30mpg combined, and your whining that it has 240HP... sounds to me like you're the one who's nuts.
One of the best car reviews I've seen on youtube. Subscribed.
Which you can't feel at all because it's very neutral. Its elegance is discreet, not bland. Executive sedan doesn't have to be showy and flamboyant.
Sad story: I don`t have money to buy a normal car but i`m watching a review for a super car.
I'm currently driving the Lexus LS 600h L (priced at $125,000) and I'm getting about 20mpg, so in that regard the A8 TDI will save the average driver $900/year in fuel alone not to mention the $25,000 premium up front - not an insignificant amount. does it ever feel underpower in any situations you've encounter?
My 1996 A6 2.5TDI 6 speed manual does 39.2 mpg highway at 74mph and if I maintain 50 mph it will go up to 52.2 mpg. And the engine in it I5 2.5TDI was introduced in the early 90's

Guess I have to cross the pond for that one. We've got the 3.0T, 4.0T and W12 instead.
if you own the vehicle for the long term, you also need to factor in the replacement cost of the battery and related parts, which is likely to exceed the cost of any replacement turbo in the diesel. Thus tipping favour to the diesel even further. Guess I should start saving now.
When will there be the review of the Lexus LS600h L? (Or will there be one...)
Where I live (Northwestern Ontario Canada) diesel fuel is about 7 cents/litre cheaper, so in some cases this could save you even more depending on where you live.
Steve,
Are you going to be reviewing the other TDI models that are out now the A6/A7/Q5?
Specifically interested to watch a review and hear your opinions of the Q5 TDI which is now Audi's best selling vehicle.
TIA
Man we have got a Q7 and it is really good! Issues may have all the cars! It's just bad luck! Good luck with your next audi!
3:35 - Now THAT is GORGUS!
Dear Fucking Santa...
i think im in love
You won't be disappointed!

what's meaning ATVI ? i don't know some words TDI, ATVI, ATT, B&O. please explain for me !
Love the sound of turbo's!!!!!!!!!!!
If you're looking for a big send off you might be a tad disappointed but otherwise no, it feels really solid.
every comparison test ive watched the audis moped the floor with lexus. my first car was a is250 awd. then i got a 2010 audi a4 it made the lexus like like a joke. i love where Lexus is going now with being more sporty but they still aren't there yet. the Germans know everyone out to beat them and copy them so they are stepping up the game.
You should try the 4.2 V8 Diesel in this car, it's mind blowing...
Thanks, Steve. Yeah, it's quite unfortunate, and after looking at Reliability reports, it appears the two European cars in our house are the worst. The Q7, and a 2012 Jaguar XJ, which we actually had to replace under lemon law (we had a 2011 that spent more time at the dealer than in the driveway!). this was a great review
This car is awesome!! $100k for all this stuff and a motor that should outlast the aluminum parts is a no brainer if you can afford the admission! I love VW/Audi diesels!!!?
The price I found one for 22000
yes with a LEXUS it is very very reliable and won't be at the shop like it's german competitors. Great Choice
it looks a nice car, but as mentioned reliability question mark , i would go lexus for sure.
You didn't do that braking thing you do at the end of your videos.
in car wifi and massage seats? SOLD! hahahahhaa

S8 I assume is next in the review lineup?
he's right.
If you like A8L TDI then just go and buy it, no need to talk about which is better, You like it, you buy it, simple.
Lovely car. I'd still rather take a base S550 W222.
Checking out Paige & Palermo now!
I had to look that up - I hope I don't look that crazy!
this the car my mom is going to be in
how come you still paid $12k for another newer, but used, audi?
i would have just taken the money back and buy a well optioned Lexus GX or RX350. maybe a used LX570.
I know right? Cars are getting heavier though with all the new safety equipment.
Diesel in Canada is currently 10% less than regular gas. This will sell like hot cakes here.
240 HP...you are NUTS!!!!..Merc' all the way bro'
this beats all the competition including lexus LS 600h L... LOL what a name
can someone please explain to me why someone with enough money to buy a $100,000 car would be worried about saving $800 in gas?
I hope the BMW 7 series Diesel makes it to the U.S. quick, before this car wins me over.
I don't think there is any basis in fact for that statement. Everyone I know who has earned the money to buy a 100k dollar car is very interested in saving money when it's smart.
Steve I would loved to be hired as your correspondent in Texas.....I love cars....
Audi > The field
Isn't there a bridge you should be under somewhere? How many hundreds of thousands of miles have you put on VW diesels to make such a statement? I put 300,000 on my jetta with no major issues, gave it to my friend who still drives it everyday when I bought my Passat TDi.

Finally, nearly 10 years later and i was able to buy one... See you in traffic peasants.
I don't understand, if you like A8L TDI so much, why didn't you buy one? You keep telling me how it is superior and more efficient that petrol, you should just buy one, otherwise don't waste your time typing this.

2013
$99000?!?!
I could get a GTR for that money
It does 0-60 in about 6 seconds dead.
People compare Audi to Volkswagon, but the logic is then you have to compare it to Bugatti, Lamborgini, and others owned by Volkswagon group.
Rolls Royce doesn't compete in this class, so Lexus is the #1 most reliable mainstream car brand. Toyota is #2, and Porsche is #3. I wish I could afford a Rolls Royce, but I can't justify spending that much on a car when i could invest the money instead. damn that sucks...I'm glad that I chose the LS460 over the A8
diesel gate ruined it all for me, so i guess i will just get the 4.0T
Audi A8L TDI > Mercedes Benz S class
The front end looks like a Chrysler 300
You look so much like haywire off prison break
It's AWD.
Just because your name is what it is, it's funny how you'd call someone an Audi* fanboy.
who cares abut fuel savings when you are in the market to buy this caliber of car?
no they would want the W12
Now Don't get me wrong I like audi but this car is way over priced cuz of all the small trinkets and this car also too slow for that money it should be around at least the low 300hp range & 5.sec 0-60 but i can say it looks nice tho.

Benjamin Walker A diesel has more torque than hp.
Too slow? If it had 300 hp it would have 400lb/ft of torque. Gimme a brake you two
motorcity4life People talking about diesel engines like it's gas :)) These people don't know what torque is.
Lol...I was born in detroit and you wanna tell me about torque and hp...lol
If you can afford a 100k Audi i don't think you give a shit about 800 bucks saved in fuel a year
Does he told diesel is more expensive ?? it's joke ?
if the rich can afford the boat they surely can afford any fuel for it:)
Haha, not so crazy you just seem to remind me of him.
Nice :)
nice car. just well overpriced.
Genocyde1979 It's cheaper than both the new S-Class, and the redesignes 7-series. You're just poor man
electric issues bound, reliability and build issues... no ty audi
I rather go with a LEXUS! german brand is overrated and many people lease and don't own Mercs, Audi's or BMW, because it's like throwing money in the trash.. lol well that's just my opinion
The sound in the cabin tho....:(
Diesel motor sound..
Lol 'clean' diesel 😂😂
Lmfao. V6? Are you kidding me? What a joke.
lol@pond
who cares since your company pays for everything.
Yeah then get a Japanese car and save yourself 20-30 grand to buy a nice Omega or Rolex.
Lol funny guy...
Hahahaha :-)
