  • The Audi A8 TDI is a fantastic road car with loads of features, oodles of luxury, and a brilliant diesel engine that's well suited to the genre. And, thanks to a large fuel tank, it has tons of range. We test the range by visiting some of the world's largest roadside objects and find out how many we can see on one tank before we run dry.

      ***** With the exception of six-cylinder BMW 1-series, you're not missing anything in terms of our hatchbacks. Most of the estates are pretty dull too - except those based on the interesting British and German saloons that you get anyway. You also REALLY don't want diesel...

      In Europe diesel fuel is just a little bit cheaper than gasoline and around 40% of cars are powered by diesel. I drive 2003 Audi A6 1.9TDI. On one tank of fuel (18.5 gallons) my range is around 920-930 miles driving 60mph on a cruise control which means 50-51MPG on the highway. Normal freeway driving with speed of 70-80mph means 740 miles of range (40MPG).

    Picked our 328d wagon up at the factory. While in Germany and Austria we averaged 37mpg, and that was with a LOT of 100mph autobahn cruising.
    Back in the states it averages low 30's in short trip city driving and we've seen 48 on a road trip down and back to the gulf coast.
    It's got great power, is quiet and smooth. Great ride.

    251 miles on 6.3 gallons. 2014 q5 3.0 tdi. That is 40 mpg. Tank size 19.8 gallons. If I take it to the end(just quoted tank size), that's 800 miles. If I bled the tank dry would probably be 850 miles. Point I'm getting at is trip showed 38.5, I actually got 40 mpg. Shouldn't be possible from a 6 cylinder SUV. Got to love it! If my tank was the size of the A8, then I would be pushing the 1000 miles mark! Got to love audi!

      You're right, I put my point across poorly. When you are trying to make something look like it has range it made more sense to showcase how many miles to the gallon it can do as that is the ultimate test. If you had an A3 with the same size fuel tank as the A8, it would have a far greater range.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  10 лет назад +22

      Tony McSpadden Yes, but it would be an A3. I just drove the new A3 up in San Francisco. And let me tell you, there's no way in hell I'd want to do an 867 mile trip in that car.

      TheSmokingTire I drove an X5 with the 305 section rear tires 3.0 diesel from Luxembourg (Asselborn) to France (Narbonne) around 980km - 610 miles , fully loaded with a bike rack on the rear , averaged around 55mph , it has a slightly bigger fuel tank than the Audi , but for an SUV on fat tires , I thought it was incredible .
      A euro 2001 320d on the other hand does 730 miles with 16.8 gallons .
      Dont get me wrong a diesel Audi is great , but I find that the older diesels are much more fuel efficient and reliable. New diesels do multiple injections every compression stroke purely for emissions, and that kills the fuel economy. Clarkson even drove the old big 4.0TDI 800miles

    Range isn't the only thing Id be looking for. I would want a nice ride too. The passat TDI sel has a lot of features too and has a smooth ride. The vw's may not be as nice as the Audi but the vw's still have nice features. If it came down to it to where I was well off enough and could easily afford the Audi I would buy it. But if I was in a buffer zone to were I could afford the Audi but it was near my limit I would go with the Passat TDI.

    All these dumb comments about how people have 1 liter miserable diesel economy cars that have further ranges, thinking that makes this audi a waste of money clearly don't understand. This is a huge heavy luxury German sedan, heated and cooled seats, room in the back seats, all sorts of gizmos and gadgets, wonderful performance and still gets astonishing mpg for how little it compromises, which is basically a pointless 4 second 0-60 time which can only be used like once or twice a day getting on the freeway to and from work, only to have yourself paying way more in fuel.

    Part of me wishes that one day Audi would make a mid-engine TT with said diesel v6 in it (there were plans for a v12 TDI R8, but it died) to go up against the Cayman S, but it's up to the execs to greenlight it, or hopefully a tuner company can get that project underway for a future episode of Tuned or showcase at SEMA...until then, I'll hold out on a used R8.

    +TheSmokingTire thanks for actually reading our comments. I am guessing the car has the "stop for a kid in the road" programmed in also? If they can get it to stop for stop signs and see what the traffic is doing at a 4 way then you could almost never touch the pedals. These things are getting close to 6th Day type stuff when Arnold spins his chair to chat with his buddy and the truck drives it self. I know Google has some but they are not cheap enough for most consumers.

      Okay, i'm not arguing my friend! Just as far as I've been aware, in the automotive industry running a diesel car out is a huge no no. But hey, things may have changed, especially with Audi's innovative TDI engines! It's most likely that they have a system whereby they reserve some diesel within the system so you don't have to go through this lengthily process if you do happen to run it dry :)

    • @bmcunning
      @bmcunning 9 лет назад +1

  • @dzelpwr
    @dzelpwr 10 лет назад

    I can think of one previous VW TDI model that can out-do this A8. The 1996-7 Passat TDI wagon. For whatever reason, the wagon got a bigger fuel tank. If you "vent" the air out of the top of the tank with the relief valve and fill it all the way up the filler neck when it's virtually bone dry, it will take about 26 gallons. And being that it's a more efficient 4 cylinder diesel that gets closer to 45 MPG on the highway all day long, the range can exceed 1000 miles. I personally know a few people who have exceeded that (with a couple claiming to have gone 1200 miles on one tank of fuel).
    Granted, a '96 Passat (the first VW/Audi vehicle sold with a TDI power plant in the U.S.) is not nearly as nicely put together or well-equipped as a modern A8. Nor is it as fast! 400 ft-lbs of torque from that V6 diesel and it still gets well into the 30s for MPG. Impressive!

    • @dzelpwr
      @dzelpwr 10 лет назад

      Also, speaking from first hand experience with owning a couple different TDIs over the years, being able to do more than 600 miles per tank on any one of them (about 800 on my '96 Passat sedan, which has a smaller tank than the wagon) is a really awesome thing for a road trip. It's something you have to experience first hand to appreciate.
      I've been all over the country, coast to coast and back again in these cars. Can't imagine doing it in any other vehicle now. Drove from California to Maine and back last summer in one. Drove from Ann Arbor, MI to Sebring, FL numerous times when I lived in Michigan. My annual spring break was to drive to the 12 hours (and for a few years, watched Audi TDI-powered LMP cars dominate!).
      Would be nice to afford an A8L with the V6 TDI, but I don't think on my meager technician's salary that will happen.

    36mpg highway rating at 23.8 gallons, the 2014 A8 TDI's range based on EPA numbers comes down to 857 miles. The 2014 accord hybrid on the other hand with its 45mpg EPA highway rating and 15.8 gallon tank gets you 711 miles, but you only need 3 more gallons in the accord hybrid to match the Audi's EPA highway range, albeit with maybe less features and no spare tire.
    Half of the idea that "diesels get long range" simply comes from diesel cars having larger fuel tanks, and with modern hybrid technology this advantage has really been eroded... not to mention dieselgate

    • @yanDeriction
      @yanDeriction 7 лет назад

      Actually, the facts are that A) Hybrids have slightly higher production emissions but B) Hybrids have lower lifetime emissions than their non-hybrid equivalents, as in, hybrid diesels are more efficient and pollute less than plain diesels as well.
      The accord hybrid has a 1.3kwh battery, lithium ion's energy density is 200wh/kg, which means the accord hybrid will have 7kg/16lb of lithium in its battery pack. What're the emissions that go into manufacturing 16lb of lithium in a battery pack weighing less than 100lb? Certainly less than the 9mpg difference over a car's lifetime.

      Well, then compare apples to apples.
      You want a FOUR cylinder MID SIZE sedan comparo, go look at the Passat TDIs that were sold through 2015. I have numerous customers and friends and a family member who owned them and on long highway trips the cars legitimately get 50 MPG. Combine that with a 17 gallon fuel tank and what do you get? You get a car that walks all over your Accord Hybrid for range, and it's a bigger car, arguably more comfortable and has quite a lot of torque, effortless passing on the highway that doesn't require downshifting (because the diesel makes prodigious amounts of low and mid range torque), keeping the cabin noise to a minimum.
      The A8L is basically a limo. The rear seats have more leg room and just as many features as the front seats. It also has a V6 instead of a 4 cylinder and makes 100 horsepower more than the 4 cylinder diesel and 400 ft-lbs of torque... and it still gets 37 MPG highway.

    So this is why I ask, why Americans drive a V8? Even when they buy a diesel they buy like a 6.0 Litre....? So stupid!
    Here in Europe we drive at max 2.0 TDI's and between 1.2 TSI and 2.0TSI...
    In America, its a whole other story

      range equals convenience. When you have a nice car, it's a nice convenience to not have to fill it up very often. It doesn't mean you NEED to drive 867 miles non stop in one tank, but in the real world it means that if you buy one, you will probably only have to fill it once, maybe twice a month driving normally. That's a nice convenience.

    Don't diesel engines freeze up if they run out of gas. I thought you had to bleed the whole engine before refilling it if it runs out, no?

      Old ones do. New ones shut down electronically before they get to that point.
