Thank you so much for this. I have a 2019 Rav 4 and I been scratching my head on how to effectively mount an antenna on it and the now I have a solution!
So far, this is working well for me. No scratches in the paint from magnets, no holes in the car to lessen it's value, and I fit in the garage with no issues
@@SevenFortyOne these new cars are really a challenge for antenna mounting. Thanks for the video I just orderd mine!
@N3PEM where did you find the brackets for the RAV4? I'll add a link...
I recommend for coax and power wires routing from engine compartment into interior through the firewall to avoid moisture entering inside and corroding electrical components. Door seal route is very problematic. I am a professional auto mechanic and general amateur radio operator. This is based on over thirty years experience of automotive repair. The ditch light bracket option is probably the best for modern vehicles, next would probably be attached to a strong aftermarket roof rack, modern vehicle design has very thin materials and plastic everything. Good video!
Now that's thinking outside the box!
I use ditch light brackets, too! They're empty most of the time; I use them mostly for contesting. Nice work! -Scott
I have a 2023 Outback. I used the same lip mount. I put it on the hatch, just below the tailight, above the point where the bumper starts to curve. I have my ATAS-120A antenna there. Not ideal since it is fairly low, but it does work.
When I was editing the video I realized there was probably room on the hatch right below the tail light. If I ever put HF in this car I may revisit that spot for the diamond mount
That forward lean will get you some extra punch into the local repeater - not only will you be driving like a speed freak, but you'll be forcing that RF in too! Smart Move!
Beautiful. I've been looking for a solution for my '18 Outback and they make brackets for that model year too. I'm hoping to run coax and power through the firewall. Thanks for the tip on the ditch light brackets.
This might be super helpful. I've been thinking about an Outback for my next car. We'll see what happens, but great video.
I just ordered my ADF brackets for my 2024 Forester. I am even looking at their lift kits. Thanks for the info.
I found having the antenna mounted close to the dash causes my radio to receive interface from the touch screen. I ended up moving the antenna to the hatch
So I have a 2020 outback, I spent a long time figuring out my antennas. I custom made a bracket that attaches to the top rack and the coax is brought in through the rear hatch. I also have hamsticks that attach to a mag mount on the car top. I almost mounted a tarhill on the back via a tow hitch
I didn't want to put anything on top of the car as I need it to fit in my Garage and also occasional low parking garages in Boston.
Nice! I have a Crosstrek 2024 and I'm not ready to drill into the roof. I've been wondering if I could do something on the crossbars. Did you drill directly through them and mount an NMO? I have a garage issue too and wondering if I should do the roof, or ditch lights, but the ones that mount on the front door frame. Thoughts?
That's exactly what I wanted to do. I even asked you about those brackets for this purpose. Thanks for doing this video. Although, I don't like punching a hole on the grommet at the door hinge. There is a place you can "punch" through in the fire wall. Either way, looks like a great way to place an antenna. Now would an HF antenna work!
Where is there a place to go through the firewall? I didn't see it
@@SevenFortyOne At the moment, I can't remember which video I watched, I'll look more on my history, but there is a Gromit somewhere near the steering wheel, or the brake pedals on the other side of the firewall, that's where you put through your coax cable.
I saw that too...it's only on the older model..mine does not have that grommet
I have found light brackets work for newer cars work for antenna. I used something for my jeep wrangler. It has the same AL hood issue.
Wont the antenna hit the window screen when you open the hood.
As well ss bug you when you see antenna interfering with you driving vision moving and wobbling around..
I would of mounted it onto the roof rack for maximum Hight.
📶📶📶📶
No, it doesn't hit the window when you open the hood. It doesn't bother me while driving either...it is a stiff antenna and doesn't move around too much. I couldn't put it on the roof rack as it would be too high for my garage
@@SevenFortyOne ok it will probably be ok as long as you dont need to put a very long H/F antenna on it, LOL 😂😂🤣🤣
@2:15 - Just a note, they make a mount like that without the tab. I have one on my Explorer attached to the rear hatch.
I've seen it...I think it is from comet and will be something to consider in the future
Do you have to remove the antenna when opening the hood?
No, they don't even come close to hitting the windshield
Awesome. This may be the solution to getting an antenna on my wife's minivan. Thanks!
Great video! I didn't see your follow-up radio installation link at the end. Is that in the works or am I missing something?
If I don't have to work OT tomorrow the radio install video will post Friday. I've been pretty busy at my day job so this took some time to get out together...
@@SevenFortyOne I have one of those too, so I completely understand. Thanks for the quick reply and looking forward to it!
The hoods on 2024 Subaru's are aluminum? I have a 2024 Forester Wilderness, and is it aluminum too? That's the first I've heard of this.
I can't say for the Forester but mine is definitely aluminum
My 2015 Forester's hood is aluminum, but the roof is steel. Most all of our 2019 Ford F150 is aluminum.
@sevenfortyone recommendations please for a ‘20 Avalon antenna mount like you found for your Subaru? The maker you used doesn’t have one for the Avalon
Try a Google search...that's where I'd start if I were facing this problem
I’ll keep looking thanks!
Do you have any issues with your antenna interfering with Subaru's "Eyesight" for cruise control/lane control?
I don't have any issues
@@SevenFortyOne thank you! I'm starting to get into the hobby and have an outback that I don't want to drill holes in 😅 probably going to do something very similar to this on my own!
@@SevenFortyOne what NMO stud are you using? Does that come with the SBB-5 or did you repurpose the stud that came with the original K400 mount you were using before switching to the fog light mounts?
@Otisnfur I reused the one from the k400 since it was ready to go but I have a generic one I got from quicksilver that I used to size the holes in the fog light bracket
@@SevenFortyOne Thank you again. I guess what I'm trying to figure out is how you got the connecter mounted to the bracket. When you're drilling the holes you use the smaller stud, but at the end of the video is the larger stud you mentioned came from the k400. If I don't already have a k400 and am looking to do this as a fresh install with the same SBB-5NMO antenna, how would you recommend going about securing the antenna to the bracket?
How do I expose the K-400 stud? Mine is flush under the NMO mount and doesn’t appear to have much of a stud.
The outer brass collar unscrews
How are you rocking’ “Historic Vehicle” plates on a 2024 Outback?
Take a close look at the plates
I hate aluminum hoods and why I didn’t put my antenna there.
I have , had 2014, 2019 Forester similar car. antenna mounting picture are on my QRZ page, if anyone interested. HF and VHF AG6JU
My ‘21 Outback has a Comet NMO mount with the Comet 2x4 antenna mounted where you put yours EXCEPT mine is 2” or so closer to the A pillar. It has NO FLEX WHATSOEVER!! The antenna coax terminates to an Icom 2730 residing under the driver’s seat. I chose not to route the coax and 12AWG DC through the grommet like you. AC4OK
I wonder if the comet mount is different/better. The diamond mount wouldn't sit on the hood properly any closer to the a pillar. I also wonder if there is something different in the hood design on your '21
Lip mounts are the worst. Metal fatigue plus finish damage= no go.
Bummer. Subaru only. Looking for something similar for my 2019 ford f150
When searching options I saw brackets for an F150 from another place
Thanks 😊
The “tool” looks like a scratch awl to me.
The new vehicles are not ham friendly
Great video 🙂
