Speaking of roguelikes, i had a similar experience with post-hades games but mostly only because i went into hades in the first place because i enjoyed the traditional roguelikes like CDDA, cogmind, qud, brogue etc and i heard a friend say "man you gotta check hades out it's great i know you like roguelikes" and at first i was like "ok sure but this isn't what i play", thing is hades is so well crafted and is polished to a sheen so fine that you just have to fall in love with it, a feeling that wasn't reciprocated by any other roguelite i played since except tiny rogues very recently so for a while i just went back to playing qud and CDDA. Hades is just a different breed of a game, it really is unmatched imo in what it does.

At this point, recommending a game because it's a roguelike is almost like recommending a resturant because they print their menus at the same place as that other restaurant that everybody likes.

For some reason it's way more fun to watch you do a dash run than one yourself.
Also with the dio booms, you could've gone for premium vintage.

I've gotten into so many games thanks to your channel. It's hard to find another game like Hades, but you've introduced me to games like Wildfrost, Balatro, Backpack Hero, God of Weapons, Inscryption, Loop Hero, Rogue Legacy 2, the Gnorp Apologue, Undermine, and a handful of others. Each has its own charm.

Risk of Rain 2 is an amazing game as well. As you mentioned, roguelikes are vastly different, there is a ton of them, and only indie/AA devs make them, but that's because it allows the artistic freedom of the creators to flourish. They're all unique and enjoyable for different reasons, and while gameplay is a major factor, I think other small things matter just as much. Like I love the goofyness of Binding of Isaac, the characters in Hades, and the sheer sense of scale and abandonment in Risk of Rain 2. They make me feel things and want to experience more of the world they present to me. I can replay Minecraft dozens of times, but each time I fall into the same gameplay loop the minute I load into the world, needing to grind endlessly to make something cool.

  • @treschlet
    @treschlet 5 месяцев назад +3

Also I think with double-strike, pomming the dash also chains to that, and you're hitting the dash 2-3 times as often as like, jolted. so the relative damage buff for a pom is like... 5 to 1 to jolted, when you add it all up (and have double strike up past 50%)

Knight Vs Giant: The Broken Excalibur gave me Hades vibs while I was playing it. I wouldn’t say it’s the best but I had a blast playing it.
I believe it has a demo so it’s a game you can try if you have an itch for a similar game.
Do note it might not be for everyone.

  • @spheresong

I do feel like hades is a roguelite for people who don't normally love roguelikes in that it gives you a lot more control over how your run goes and is much more plot forward. With that in mind, two others I would suggest are "Children of Morta" and "Everspace."

Hades is really the only roguelike I've played, besides a bit of Rogue Legacy (which I played first), but it didn't really click with me. The thing is that I'm mostly a story gamer (my main genre is JRPGs), and I think Hades hooked me with the story elements, which grew into an appreciation for the gameplay.
Side note: my GOTY for 2023 was Octopath Traveler II. Incredible JRPG with an incredible soundtrack and a really fun battle system. Dunno if it would be your thing, but I love it

this was a killer run, and dash only zeus boon has even more unrealized potential too:
offense: demeter + zeus duo where jolted persists, hermes +3 dashes, posieden + aphro/dio for boon + pom enhancements, strong drink. or the ares boon to boost damage after revival. even the duo with ares for continuous revenge damage you were shooting for
defense: couple different weak boons, more revivals with athena (and lots more athena boons, really)

As a kid i read once that pokemon mystery dungeon was a roguelike, and that gave me a very wrong impression of what that term meant for years.
But i agree, it's a really broad genre because it's not really a genre as much as a type of gameplay loop; a roguelike can really be one of many different genres.

I really loved the discussion of other games here though. Obra Dinn and Tunic are amazing games. I think the Witness takes itself way too seriously, so no, it doesn't respect your time. I get really irritated by games that feel like they're bragging about how smart they are. (Fez also comes to mind.) But something like Tunic is smart without being uptight about it. Idk if that makes sense.

I only bought the game yesterday and havent made it past elysium, but one time got lucky with my boon selection and stoped using my weapon because my dash was killing enemies so fast (lightning and also something else I believe, like weakness or doom) sadly I got to an enemy (a gargoyle I think) who shoots rocks at you that cannot be deflected/broken which i didnt know and i kept getting petrified and eventually died.

I definitely convinced myself that I liked the roguelike genre after playing Hades and Slay The Spire. I haven’t found another one that I truly connected with. I have really tried to find another as well. I tried Rogue Legacy 2 and didn’t like it. I tried Risk of Rain 2 and Dead Cells and thought they were OK. I think that’s just a further testament to how good games like Spire and Hades are. I can legitimately play nothing but those two for hours and be content.

14:36. Yes, in a way, it kinda tricked me. I had dead souls on my back log, cause everyone was saying it was hype... but it was a rouge like, and that's not my jam. Then I played Hades, and this game is AWESOME! So I went back to dead souls, which was fun, but didn't give me the feels of Hades. Then I tried Rad, which gave the me the feels of my childhood growing up the 80s and 90s, but it was so sluggish compared to both of the prementioned games. Then I was super excited about have a nice death, like really excited! I'm just not sure if I like rouge like games, or just this one. Not gonna lie, can't wait to put another 300+ hours into Hades 2! Sometimes the game goes beyond the genre. It's just a great and satisfying game to play, especially if the story is there as well

Hades has a bug in it where once you hit a very high number of runs, the load times start to increase. With your dexterity and reaction speed it would be kind of a shame if you started to focus on turn-based games I guess... So maybe I shouldn't encurage that 🫣
Just wondering because I kinda struggle with just playing fast action games, I'm so good at them either, and it sorta resets my mindset when I swap between turn-based and fast paced games. Kinda lets me get back in my game in either style of gameplay.
