The fact that Apple not only decided to stick with 256GB as the entry storage, but is in fact SLOWER storage than the previous model is absurd. It should at the very least have a note on their website specifying these detail
Max Tech explains this in more.
Don’t listen to the Apple apologists like The Everyday Dad and Rene Ritchie that is calling this issue disinformation.
If people still think of Apple as consumer friendly they're not worth talking to
thats just apple for ya 🤷
The problem is that would make the customer more informed, and apple wouldn't want that
How does the SSD speed compare to comparably-priced Windows machines?
Absolutely killing it with the intros. They are so original, so good, and literally increase the already EXTREMELY HIGH quality videos by an absolute TON. Keep it up man!
I agree.
100% agree
I would love to see more intros like the m1 iPad intro, god that was insane

This is the review that i have been looking for ever since M2 MacBook Air has been out!! Everyone else focuses on all the technical specs and forget the basics. M1 MacBook Air at 1K, M2 MacBook Air 2 1.5K and MacBook Pro at 2k. This is all I need to make my decision! Great job!
Which one you finna get???
@@Thomas-fx9kf my wife got a MacBook Pro and I am still waiting for the Mac Mini M2 to be release 👍
Well… The reason for considering the M2 Air a $1500 laptop also applies to the M1 Air, so the M1 Air is more like a $1300 laptop following that same logic
@@indigetal wtf are you saying
@@LM-lj2cf having 16GB RAM OR 512GB storage + Tax is 1300 USD for the M1 Air still.
I just finished my first semester of University with this laptop and I can confirm that I absolutely love it. Perfect weight and size for everything I need in university, and light enough to take on the commute. So far the Midnight colour has been really durable for me. Awesome Mac
glad this is here cause i just ordered mine for school too
Same here, finished a semester and it’s been awesome. I understand there’s some issues but really in real life situations you never face them.

imagine smashing out an intro even more cinematic and impressive than apple's own marketing, then cold opening with 'aight, what's up?' Such great content.
His intros are awesome, but I think we can still agree that the apple cinematics are still better?
@@ducksreviewtech3396 Yes. I feel like Mkbhd studies apple's design philosophy and makes intros with those principles
Marques is the Gold Standard...
i don't see how him saying aight what's up is very special or peculiar...are you having an 'exaggerated swagger' moment?
He 1000% pays others to do this stuff for em folks. This isn't him doing his own stuff these days. He's paying folks to do it. Which honestly isn't a bad thing tbh.
That Intro was so incredibly done. The M shifts at right a little before going to the left and that kind of detail makes this the best tech channel on youtube.
Even if M didn't move to right, it would have looked the same.
@@ketankbc No, it wouldn't, it shifted to make space for 2, it looks cleaner. Putting 2 without shifting wouldn't make the intro as good as it is.
@@tiesetsomatsipa5402 I said shift to RIGHT.. not shift to left.. left shift is indeed needed..but no need to shift to right, before shifting to left.. hope you understood what I meant
Does anyone know the name of the song used in the intro? I already know it's by 20syl
In short: It's animated well.
And this is why I watch these videos. He hits all the points I’m curious about and other points make me consider things I haven’t previously pondered.
But looks like a refurb base model will be perfect for my needs because I’ll just be recording some stuff off my Focusrite and nothing too intensive. But I’m glad I know everything I need now is in this package and makes me feel more comfortable parting with the money.
Thanks, brother. Always good content. ❤

I'm curious if Apple would ever decide to create a Macbook SE. Maybe keep the Macbook Air M1 design in principle but tweak it in a way that they could sell it for... I dunno $699 or less and have it start competing with Chromebooks and the like (or at least the peception of a super cheap, gateway product into Mac OS).
Now that I can get on board with
Yes. You have my vote!
they're not doing that for another 10 years probably lmao
They would never do it, apple sells status first then hardware. Opening that market will just make them lose profit from the top tier laptops. I know people that just use Microsoft word and have the MacBook Pro 16 inch, its just easy money for them.
Going that cheap might hurt the brand overall.
One thing I was concerned with the M2 MacBook Air being so thing is it possible to flex the base with the keyboard during transport. Also, one thing you may want to consider when travelling in the hotter climates heat built up is an issue even with the MacBook pro. You may consider then using a fan assisted base powered by the usb

I’m a Data Engineer as well as a hobbyist music producer that recently upgraded from the 2016 MacBook Pro w/Touch Bar to the MacBook Air M2 (spec’d out to 10 cores, 24gbs of Memory and 1tb SSD). For me, the deciding factor was the portability even though I knew the Pro was the superior machine. I have to say that since using it, this new laptop is beyond sufficient for my workflow and the trade off on performance for a lighter and more compact form factor was definitely worth it for me. No doubt I see myself keeping this machine for many, many years.
Same. I went with a $2k-specc'd M2 Air. I know the 14" MBP has better performance and more ports, but my laptops are constantly traveling and moving, and I'll trade some performance for portability. Everyone acts like it's sacrilege to max these out (instead of going for the 14"), but that's just because they can't comprehend other people's use profiles. They just stare at benchmarks at all day, and that's all a device is to them.

Recommend base model? I have very basic use as a student
@@universalyoutuber195 if u need ports and wanna play some games occasionally don't even bother paying for the base macbook, plus you've just said that your needs are basic, I'm presuming you read some pdf docs, excels, and emails... for that purpose, I wouldn't want you to burn your cash on base model MacBook air/ ProBook, so, in a way, if you buy a good windows laptop and still have some money remaining think about what you could do with all those money, my advise is that spending is really a lot easier, but to earn it back is hard, so spend it wisely and don't worry about it later, and I gotta admit that the 256 Gb of the base model MacBook has a lot of downsides, apart from being Mobile and being really lightweight it doesn't have much of anything that the windows cant offer for the basic stuff that you're asking for and it's way cheaper but for the compromise of some performances but you're looking for basic use nd I would recommend windows lap is more than enough for you and you can save a lot of money, so I repeat Spend Wisely.
i'm finally looking to upgrade from my 2012 macbook pro a decade later (it's been a great run, but it's getting hot all the time and the fan is going bananas, the battery is terrible, and it's no longer supported by updates). i've been debating between the M1 and the M2 airs, and i THINK despite the higher price, i'm going with this one, because it's 2 years newer, and i'd like to get a longer use/support out of it. (i'd love to go another 10 years with a new one, but i'd be really happy with 6-7 too). i'm thinking of going 16ram/512gb in starlight, fingers crossed it's not super fingerprint heavy.
With the M1 Air they made a computer with an exceptional price/quality ratio. With this one they're making a very desirable product, but it comes back in the luxury territory, rather than the utilitaristic one.
Which is probably why they kept the M1
In a few years it will most likely be back to its 999$ price tag just like the last model did.

@@patrykoopiw That’s a good point, however this happened only three years ago. The new MacBook airs costed 1199& and over those three years it went down.
This M2 mac really proves how awesome M1 really was. It was the perfect balance of power and efficiency and worked perfectly in a fanless design. The M2 may be more powerful, but that extra thermal output and downgraded SSD is definitely a caveat to that extra power.
To anyone looking to get the M2 as their laptop, I would take a moment to consider the M1 Macbook air, too. It does so many things right, it's WAY cheaper, and it's not as much of a downgrade as you would think.
yeah I was waiting to see what the m2 had. Just got my m1 16gb for 1200, no brainer tbh. For what I need it's plenty.
You can't do the thermal mod on M2 Air either. It's so cheap and easy and completely removes the need for a fan. They could have fixed the thermal issue with a $1 pad but instead crippled it so you have to spend an extra $300 to "upgrade" to a noisy fan. What a joke.
@@Rnshah5 did exactly the same, 200 extra for 8gb more ram versus better design is a no brainer
Its not WAY cheaper. This is shitty advice. The M2 Air is completely redesigned and better is almost every single way.
its funny cuz you can get the m1 for well under $1000 if you know where to look
I got my m1 air for $800 on black friday
honestly that should be the starting price now, and the m2 air for $1000 starting
I have a suggestion for the possible scratches around the USB-C port, which worked out fine for years on my space gray iPad: I usually put the USB head in diagonally first, so that one of its edges is halfway in and other edge is out. Then I push the edge inside the port wall and correct the direction of the USB head while doing so. It then easily fits in, and it almost does not take additional time and effort. It really helped me not to scratch the port surrounding, I do the same thing for lightning ports on iPhones as well.

Great review, you touched on all of the questions I had, well done!
The hidden performance gap between the base and higher end models reminds me of the whole debacle with the 24-in iMac where it missed a fan and heat pipe in the base unit and Apple never really disclosed it.
i wonder how much of this is due to chip-shortages?
@@markslima1557 Could be. Apple never disclosing it is obviously entirely their decision, though.
I have the upgraded 24" iMac and after seeing performance numbers, it isn't really worth the extra $200 to get the extra fan. They're very close in performance. It's a fantastic machine that never really gets much mention since the laptops are Apple's big sellers.
The fan thing made basically no difference for the sort of customers buying a 24” iMac, and the same is true with the SSD here. If it bothers you, but the higher end model, but for 99.9% of their customers it’s a complete non issue.
I love listening to Marques. He makes me feel like he is really conversing with me and, often, he makes me think about things that typically I wouldn't consider. Keep the videos coming, sir!

I love how to the point this is. I feel like these laptops are really impressive, but they're well-understood now. We need a dash of context and relevant zoom-ins on what makes this one different. Exactly what's in your video. No Apple hype. Just some facts and some opinions that IMO really naturally follow from those facts. This was a really quick way to get I think a really solid perspective on this laptop.
Thanks for shouting out the M1 MacBook Air! Some of us have that, and it really does deserve attention, especially at the 256GB storage tier as you mentioned.
Yea, you can't do a laptop review in a bubble. Mentioning how the recommended spec means that the price will be close to other high end mac books helps inform consumers about what will be the right decision for them.
thanks for the video as well as your input on the pros and cons of the m2 macbook air!
I recently got the M2 macbook air. I got the 16gb ram and 1TB SSD for about $1600. It's pretty good so far, although I'm biased because I haven't had a working laptop for like 5 years lol.
How did you get it for that cheap? i mean with that specs it will cost you around 2k with the taxes.
Thanks MKB I always look forward to your videos, for the content and the polish. Yeah ordered the M2Air. In midnight. 16gb/1TB/10c. I'm just in love with the color and the sleek, thin look of it. Plan to have it for years.

I bought this laptop for school. So far, I love it. I haven't owned a Mac for a while so this was really pleasing. I love the colour, the price, and the performance. Though I wouldn't have bought it if it weren't for your thorough review. It helped me think about my purchase. Turns out I still love apples.
Just love how you kept things simple and clear.
Marques, a very well done review. I was wondering how you’d handle this one and you came through with style.
the preview for the video is amazing! great job
I just got one, upgrading from a 2018 Mac mini (Intel), and I'm really loving it. I see some of the midnight color scraping off near the ports, and the fingerprints everywhere are kind of annoying (I can't stop cleaning it), but overall it's pretty good. And, the M2 chip is pretty fast, with noticeable improvements from Intel. The main issue though is the lack of ports. I do have a USB hub from Anker, but even with that I still found myself running out of USB-C ports.
Every time I think the intros cannot get better, the next one blows it out of the water. Seriously, great job, so awesome.
I really wish they gave the M1 14 and 16 inch MacBook Pro a Midnight color variant. That color would have been perfect in addition to everything else it offers.

Midnight black was the color I went with as well.
I was considering the M2 Air; the mag-safe, the 20% up in Brightness, the new design (perhaps), but the 256 Mem already felt a bit tight and the increasing likelihood of throttling as photo / video files get bigger and tasks more complicated the calculation changes dramatically. If I need to up the Mem to 500 the price goes up £1,500, which makes the M2 50% more the the M1, and that makes me reconsider the whole proposition. A very useful vid, thank U.

omg that intro graphics are frikkin nek level man! DOPE! lovit!
The most useful review I've seen. Thanks.
I don't do any creative things like video editing, so I opted for the M1 Air with 16gb ram and 256gb for $1200 3 weeks ago. Only reason I didn't upgrade to 512 gb drive was because I have an external 2tb hard drive. I don't regret NOT spending a little more for the m2 because of my needs and I am confident my setup will last at least 4-5 years before running into noticeable performance issues. If excel, netflix, youtube, chrome, and checking live stock charts are your heaviest demands, get the m1 air.
I got the same setup as you + the 67w charger. It gets delivered the first week of august
@@Anthony-cu9go it's a fantastic machine. If you plan to use it as a desktop with an external monitor, you'll likely need to also invest in an external dock. A few extra $$ to spend, but totally worth it, in my opinion.
Did you get the M1 or the M2 macbook? Sorry, it's just that you said m2 in the middle of that so I'm not sure which one's the typo haha
@@saitodosan9377 I apologize. I purchased the M1!!! It's good enough for my simple needs haha.
I have a 2017 max pro and I have a terrible battery which is an $80 fix. But when I open multiple tabs and try to just use the internet their is a noticeable decline in perforce in the activity monitor. I am going into college should I upgrade it?
I absolutely love how Marques talks in these videos. Feels so effortless and conversational
Ditto. Really strong review. Straight to the point with a good overview on the products.
Just got this starlight like 5 days ago...i am loving it, last time i used a Macbook was the Pro mid 2012, I switched to Windows after that and now decided to come back to macbook with this, looking forward to what the newer models will have to offer so i can upgrade.
Good job MKBHD.. what are you doing differently that makes it so interesting to watch..each video..i m so curious
A ten minute difference in rendering considering what was being rendered without active cooling is nuts. Kinda sucks that I basically have to opt for 512GB of storage if I don't want it to noticeably slow down, though
I have to say, I love you man! And let me explain why!
I’ve watched countless reviews on this laptop and I have not come across a single one mentioning what you are doing in terms of an upgraded M2 air vs M1 14 Pro. I’m currently looking to get an M2 air with 16GB memory and 512GB storage for normal daily use, that’s $2499 AUD here in Australia. On the other hand, the base model M1 14 Pro is currently retailing at $2999 AUD with frequent discounts being as low as $2697 AUD on Amazon Australia (atm). That small little extra cost is not a whole lot compared to the huge increase in preference you get by choosing the M1 14 Prob in my case.
But I guess you’re right, that’s how Apple gets you to spend that extra money that you weren’t planning on doing from the beginning.. 🤷🏻♂️😂
I just got the midnight edition from work and it's pretty slick.
Super helpful review thanks!
Thank you! Awesome review. I still don’t know if I’ll buy an M2 MacBook Air (16GB, 1To) or a 14” MacBook Pro with the same RAM and SSD. I’m
upgrading from an old Mac Mini. I’m a musician, using Logic Pro (a lot…) and Final Cut (not every day). Your review is helping me, thank you again.
