This is another Doctor REACTS video of an old medical video that walks us through the famous inkblot test called the Rorschach test. I'm looking at real footage of it being administered and we get to deconstruct what the test is, whether it has any place today and what it really attempted to measure. Was it diagnostic of mental illness? Was it a so-called "personality test"? Was it purely about projection?

Everything the Rorschach Test could reveal about someone, a professional could figure out by just talking to their client.
Yeah, I feel like the best possible use for it is just as a conversation anchor for someone hesitant to open up :/
There's a major part of the Rorschach test that's ignored here. Like with other psychological tests, the answer of one picture is not enough information to make an evaluation. We're looking for themes running throughout the test. (Do most of the images contain violence? Are there abnormal and fantastical information presented? Is there a theme of death or loss? Does the information make sense based on the symptoms provided? )
It's also supplemented by the anamneses and available psychometric information. I'm personally a fan of the Rorschach test, as quantitative based psychometric tests have a tendency of dominating the available information, and a projective test could be a good supplement to get an additional perspective.
This was part of a one hour long test I took in 1996-97, at age 23. Which led to me being diagnosed with Skizotypal PD. Having just seen the movie Batman a few days before, and the fact that I found the Rorscharch test extremely meaningless, I answered bat to every single drawing. Today I have no idea why I got that diagnosis, as I can only relate to the social problems symptoms. But found out that there is a bunch of autistic traits/symptoms that I can very much relate to, so I am signed up for ASD test in 3 years (feels like forever). I really hope that the Rorcharch test is no longer in use.
Back when I was studying for my Master in Clinical Psychology, I was taught how to administer and interpret the Rorschach test but what I remember the most about it was that it was not to be used as a single-assesment tool and was part of a package.
Also, I remember that there was a lot of statistics that were produced that showed some links between the type of answers that you would get and the potential diagnosis that it would most likely get you to.
I think it's harsh to just call it rubbish and discard that test entirely.

I took the Rorschach test in 1996. I honestly can’t tell how serious my psychiatrist took it at the time, she was educated in dealing with young people and I was 17 at the time. I remember seeing a bat. Just plain bat 😊 And spider. Nearly 20 years later, I was diagnosed with ADHD, at the persistent urge of my own .
I thought the rorschach test was used not as a personality test but to test what issues are on your mind.
I have an artist friend who has people draw squiggles on a piece of paper, and then he turns it into an ink drawing. The one he did for me he turned into a suessican looking deeps sea fantasical fish
I just had an exam on the Rorschach test and other projection and personality tests earlier today! I wish I had seen this video earlier, it probably would’ve helped me. I didn’t know that it was first used to detect schizophrenia; that’s so interesting. Also just wanted to say I love your videos! They’ve really helped me in my psychology class and my own mental health.

How do you “cure” autism? Wouldn’t that remove the major part of that persons personality?

I think calling it a 'test' is what makes me feel like there's right answers. I know there isn't, but I would get stuck on that word for sure

When I was in middle school, my mom took me to a psychologist. He tried to give me a Rorschach test but I had seen it done in an episode of Tiny Toons where he only gave baseball as his answers, so I said baseball and when he asked why, I told him it reminded me of the show, and then he just put them away. I'm kinda disappointed I didn't take it seriously, but I was a shy kid, and that's legit what popped into my head. After he put them away, I felt like I did something wrong, so I felt like since there were right and wrong answers, I had to be more guarded. I only remember seeing him once, and my mom telling me he felt I was a typical teen. (I was very good at hiding my depression and suicidal thoughts until college.)
I think the Rorschach test sounds like a lot of fun, but not particularly medically relevant. I think it would make a great party game!
I mean, it was originally a game! And yeah as a game it seems fun, like the original was just people make ink lots and then everyone comes up with what they see in them
A little over 10 years ago I had to do this test and it was used as an excuse for keeping me out of seminary. I was deemed “unable to love and be loved by others.” So yeah, this test is quackery at best
I find that astrologers, using my natal chart, are more reliable predictors of my personality traits. For example, I am an Aries with Scorpio rising. You couldn’t get more opposing influences, Aries being a fire sign and Scorpio water.😂
The Rorschach test feels like palm reading for mental health professionals (at least those of the past) lol
This was very interesting. I always did wonder how seriously these were taken, even back in the old days. And this has little to do with the actual reaction/content itself, but the part at 1:58 where she offers a cigarette to the patient, I couldn't help but think of a TV show where a detective offered a witness a cigarette the same way ("Cigarette?"), to which the witness replied "Yes, I know."
I’m not great at finding imagery in these things. I have a pretty literal mind and I don’t have a lot of patience for the process. Which is odd, because I am an artist and I love to make abstract paintings but for me an abstract is about pattern and color, brush marks, etc. I don’t well from imagination but I do draw well from life or copying an image.
I just don't get pareidolia. An inkblot is an inkblot, a cloud is a cloud. Every time someone says "Look, you can see...", I'm already thinking "nope".
Theory: Rorschach tests are similar to oracle/tarot readings in that what you see can help unlock deeper meaning within you and while it's the same picture, different people will interpret it differently based on their life experiences and energies, giving them their individual insights. A lot depends on how you use it and what you do with the information that depends on if it has value to you or not.
Side note: a lot of witches use psychology with or without knowing it because I'm constantly hearing and seeing them say things about shadow work, inner child, generational healing... the whole point of these is to help people use introspection to heal those deep inner subconscious wounds.
The methods might not be for everybody, but it's another tool to try.
I have a vague memory of looking at Rorschach cards during a psych class in undergrad, which was paired with a discussion about how it was all outdated and disproven. The only card I remember clearly is the first one because everyone said bat and I said a fae fox/fox with four eyes. I think it's a fun thing to do with friends and compare answers - like cloud gazing - but otherwise completely silly.
Very interesting history. Always knew the Rorshach test was bullshit but never knew exactly why and how 😅😅. The intriguing thing is that I wouldn't be surprised if there was a way a test like this could be by psych professionals, but what it could measure and how the data would be collected and interpreted will probably remain a mystery.

I was given this as part of an 11 part psychological test battery when I was first admitted to a psychiatric hospital in the late 90s, a couple of months in, because they had no idea what was up with me (spoiler: severe stress reaction/burnout with major depressive episode, probably due to living until 19 with undiagnosed ADHD and several depressive episodes - I learned about ADHD in my late 20s, that's when things finally started to turn around slowly for me) and while the clinical psychologist was very nice, and the Rorschach test was honestly my favourite part back then, I still give Rorschach and also psychodynamics in general -3/10, especially because I happen to have my copy of the clinical notes from back then still in my possession and every time I read them I seem to spot a new way they dropped me on my head, so to speak. 😅
I'll say this for my stay though:
They actually did a really good job screening me with all sorts of blood tests and imaging to make sure my illness was not somatic. A+
The Rorschach test story is both fun and frustrating, though. Bit of tragic comedy in hindsight, misdiagnosis and all. I often use it as an example of why I am completely done making figurative trust falls on command from new (to me) mental health professionals.
Also, the amount of damage that test has done to inuit parents by Danish therapists is apparently not small, I was told by a friend who works in research. The story of it all is apparently used some times in Denmark to illustrate cultural and other bias in research.

Doc, do you have any thoughts on interpreting from a patient's drawings?
Is there any validity to it being used for schizotaxic disorders? I could see it really only being useful for people with hyperphantasia or fantasy prone personalities as a medium for them to express themselves.
I can only say that I was personally a false positive (got mislabeled f21: Schizotypal disorder from it, but have since been re-diagnosed by some very good professionals who were very confused by it, heh)
I'm sure I'm not alone.
Fun fact: I wanted to buy Rorschach test to hang on a wall as a decoration but it's freaking expensive 😶 One of my little dreams is to take part in Rorschach test training course. I find it rather useless, I'm just curious.
I was tested with this when I was young (no older than 12), but I don't clearly remember where or why. It was not included in my assessment in my admission to a psychiatric hospital when I was 18.
So... I think Rorschach is complete, and obvious, nonsense. But I wouldn't mind taking one! I kind of put it in the same ball park as MBTI where it doesn't have any real anchor in evidence but you could probably have an interesting conversation about how someone reacts to it. Like I'd totally try to overthink it and try to identify all the things I'm being led to think a blot could be, and maybe that does say something about me, just not what the test intends.

I think what people may see says not so much about their whole personality, but rather could give you a hint (maybe) about their interests, the environment they grew up in or just the experiences they may have had. And defitnitely their creativity/thinking out of the box.
Rightfully so NOT a valid mental health tool.

I think if I would take the test that I would really struggle to formulate a answer at all. as I know it would be used to see who I am as a person and I have an obsessive fear of being a bad person.

I do appreciate the Rorschach test for enabling one of my favourite jokes - the one where the guy keeps telling the psychiatrist that he sees sex acts and genitals in the inkblots; so eventually the psychiatrist stops and says "I think you have some kind of sexual obsession", and he says "Me? You're the one with all the dirty pictures!"

I see twins for the second picture. I did my answers very quickly without even looking and use my intuition and instincts. That would probably matter more in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic.

I was tested with the Rorschach test as a part of being diagnosed with being transgender or not. I have no idea why.

It is more than arbitrary isn’t it? Really. But I suppose it could indicate if the Subject had some kind of an imagination. But it’d be just as irrelevant as showing a Subject a bunch of Mandelbrot Fractal images ( Although someone high on LSD or a similar chemical substance might beg to differ)…… ⚛️☮️🌏

I don't think it's fair to say the test is 'meaningless'. I think that any perceptions from a patient can potentially signify part of a pattern in their thinking. Therefore, a test like this this can serve as a probe into potentially maladaptive cognitive biases, which is one of the fundamental goals of therapy. I can also imagine the test being particularly useful for generating meaningful discussions in a previously reserved patient.
However, I think it is misleading to say this test - or any test for that matter - can 'detect' a personality. In fact, any standardised test that aims to measure such a subjective thing as personality is fundamentally flawed. And as it can't be measured, personality categorisation is not possible nor useful.
Then again, If we define certain patterns of thinking as 'aspects' of ones personality then maybe a test like this can serve as a probe into that? But yes, the test is still not an accurate measure of these things in and of itself due to the many issues of subjectivity mentioned.
